In this episode of 1Dime Radio, I am joined by political theorist Benjamin Studebaker to discuss Trump's failures, Canada's trade war with the US, and whether Mark Carney deserves the hype. We debate the limits of American power, Europe's supposedly revolutionary right, Fukuyama's end of history, the fallout from the Iran war, and what AI's military applications reveal about its capabilities.
In the Patreon-exclusive Backroom, we discuss how AI safety panic can function as AI marketing, my experience with an AI safety sponsorship offer, AI's uses and limits in research, and the strange ideologies of Silicon Valley.

In this episode of 1Dime Radio, I am joined by my co-author David McKerracher (Dave) of Theory Underground to celebrate the release of our new book, Post-Left Theory: Beyond Marxism, Anarchism, and Vibes. We preview some of our spiciest essays, challenging the sacred cows of the contemporary left, from Marxism and anarchism to wokeism, feminism, gender relations, and the limits of left-wing politics. We also reflect on our experience at TUCON and CanonFest, discuss the crisis of modern intellectual culture, and introduce Dave’s new philosophy trading card game, Canon: TCG, including my adventures collecting and trading rare Hegel, Freud, and Leo Strauss cards.
In the Patreon-exclusive Backroom, Dave and I get even spicier with an uncensored discussion of modern dating, sexuality, relationships, and the battle between the sexes, featuring some of our most controversial hot takes yet. In this episode of 1Dime Radio, I am joined by Haz Al-Din, Chairman of the American Communist Party and host of Infrared, a long-requested and highly controversial guest. We get into why Infrared broke with the American left, MAGA Communism and patriotic socialism, China and the limits of liberal democracy, what socialism with American characteristics could actually mean, the failures of Soviet socialism, markets vs. planning, and whether AI and cybernetics are pushing us toward a radically different economic system.
In the Patreon-exclusive Backroom, I press Haz harder on whether he is really a Marxist or closer to what I call a national-conservative socialist. We also get more personal about our shared Lebanese heritage and experiences growing up in Lebanese immigrant families, along with Islam, Christianity, socialism, culture, and the strange overlap between our backgrounds despite our political disagreements.

What you are about to listen to is a short essay I posted on Substack a while ago that was originally a speech that I presented at my friend Greg Guevara’s (the YouTuber known as Jreg) “Anti-Clanker” rally back in September. It was an event about critiques of AI, featuring other guest speakers such as YouTube creators Gokanaru, Art Chad, Duncan Clarke, Were in Hell, and Cricket Guest. I didn’t publish my speech because I had not launched my Substack yet, but I figured I might as well put this article out now before someone else writes something that says more or less the same thing (maybe someone already has, but alas). Enjoy!
Did The Left Get COVID Wrong? (Ft. Christian Parenti)
BONUS EPISODE: This conversation with Christian Parenti was originally released as a Patreon-exclusive episode of The Backroom, recorded well over a year ago. In light of recent disclosures and renewed scrutiny surrounding Dr. Anthony Fauci, the origins of COVID-19, and U.S.-funded coronavirus research, many of the questions raised in this discussion have become newly relevant, which is why I think it is worth releasing publicly now.
In this episode of 1Dime Radio, I am joined by Christian Parenti, professor of economics at John Jay College, contributor to Compact, author of books including Radical Hamilton, Tropic of Chaos, and Lockdown America, and son of the late Michael Parenti. Parenti argues that much of the left abandoned its traditional skepticism of state and corporate power during COVID, embracing lockdowns, censorship, vaccine mandates, and what he describes as “scientism.” We discuss school closures and class, the Canadian trucker convoy, Big Pharma and Big Tech, vaccine mandates and civil liberties, biodefense and gain-of-function research, the professional-managerial left, and why Parenti came out of the pandemic identifying as both a classical Marxist and a classical liberal.

The Left's Civil War (Ft. Daniel from What Is Politics?)
In The Backroom, we discuss the topic of dating, Socialism & civilization, and debate whether libertarian socialism can scale.
In this episode of 1Dime Radio, I am joined by Daniel from the YouTube channel What Is Politics? to unpack what we call the “Lizard Left”: the use of egalitarian and left-wing language to reproduce hierarchy, status competition, and social control. We discuss wokeism and the Socialism Conference, the DSA and the “rebel priest class,” why the left struggles to connect with ordinary people, what socialism actually means beyond the Soviet legacy, whether socialism can scale, and what dating apps, social clubs, tribalism, civilization, birth rates, and immigration reveal about the deeper problem of rebuilding a viable left.
The second half of the conversation continues in the Patreon-exclusive Backroom.

This is an older bonus episode originally released exclusively in The Backroom. I’m releasing it publicly in part as a reminder of the kind of longer, less filtered conversations Patreon supporters get access to.
In this episode of 1Dime Radio, I am joined by political theorist Benjamin Studebaker to revisit the idea of the “neo-left” and ask whether Pedro Sánchez and Spain’s Socialist Workers’ Party represent an alternative to neoliberalism or a left-wing way of administering it. We discuss immigration and labor power, borders and imperialism, the constraints imposed by the European Union, Spain’s tourism and property-driven growth, and why the Spanish model may not be the blueprint for the left that some imagine it to be.

The Forgotten Left Economics Tradition (Ft. Peter Ryan)
Épisode 158

In this episode of 1Dime Radio, I am joined by Peter Ryan, founder of Ryan Research, to recover a forgotten tradition of political economy that refuses the usual choice between Marxism and free-market liberalism. We contrast Karl Marx with Friedrich List and Matthew and Henry Carey, trace economic nationalism from the American System to MMT and Ha-Joon Chang, and ask whether national sovereignty, protectionism, and state capacity offer a more practical path to development and anti-imperialism.
In The Backroom, the Patreon-exclusive segment, we expand this conversation across three additional episodes with Peter Ryan. We discuss nationalist internationalism and Arnold Toynbee’s theory of civilizational cycles; Henry Carey, rentierism, Marxism, and the Irish struggle for national liberation; and, in a nearly three-hour finale, the post-left/post-right convergence, the moral limits of markets, immigration, industrial policy, class coalitions, empire, and whether any populist project can escape establishment capture.
