No Deer Yet...NOW WHAT?!

On this week’s installment of the “Wing and Tail Boys Podcast,” Angeo and Chris share some recent successes and failures as the midpoint of the season approaches. Angelo starts off the conversation sharing the story of his most recent harvest. He continues to share a recent series of unfortunate events that could have left him way more injured than he was. In that, the hosts touch on climbing safety and the different types of safety ropes you can use while climbing. 

As the conversation continues, Chris shares some successes and failures he’s encountered over the last few weeks. He shares how calling has really picked up its effectiveness in the last week. He also tells the story of his most recent shot, sharing how he brought the deer in and how the shot turned out. 

Chris and Angelo then transition to the main topic of the day, sharing strategies you can use if you still find yourself without a harvest at this point. The Boys share where they feel focus should shift during the rut, touching on travel corridors, bedding areas, buck cruising zones, calling, and using wind and thermals to your advantage. To end the episode, Chris pulls out his grunt tube and shows you how he likes to call in his deer!

Early Success In New Jersey

The Boys go on to discuss their first few sits of the hunting season including what did and didn’t go well. Angelo shares a detailed account of his successful hunt, including the lessons learned from using a crossbow while working a camera in a saddle and why he will not be doing it again. Though Chris did not get a shot on his first sit, he talks about the smaller successes he had during the hunt as well as some tweaks he needs to make to his gear and climbing process. He also touches on some of the changes in the woods including the changes in cover and the recent increase in deer sign.
