| From Slicing to Swinging: Jeff Smith's Golf Tips | 25 Aug 2024 | 00:45:55 | |
(00:00) On-Course Adjustments in Golf This chapter covers the importance of making on-course adjustments during a round of golf, especially when faced with common issues like slicing. Jeff Smith explains that simply changing your aim to compensate for a slice is not effective, as it can exacerbate the problem. Instead, he suggests focusing on the relationship between the club face and the swing direction to make the ball fly more predictably. By aligning the club face correctly and adjusting the swing path, golfers can manage their shots better and avoid consistently poor results. We also explore practical techniques to adjust on the fly and ensure a more enjoyable and successful round of golf. (10:14) Kitchen Adjustments for Busy Golfers This chapter focuses on balancing a busy lifestyle with the convenience of home-cooked meals, especially for those who may not have the time or desire to cook. We explore the benefits of using meal kit services like HelloFresh, which offer quick and easy meal solutions. Jeff shares his personal experience of transitioning from relying on quick-fix meals like beefaroni to enjoying healthier, home-cooked options with minimal effort. Additionally, we touch on the importance of making adjustments both on the golf course and in the kitchen to improve overall quality of life. (12:57) Golf Swing Alignment and Bunker Tips This chapter addresses common issues in golf such as pulling shots to the left. We explore key checkpoints including alignment and ball position, emphasizing the importance of aligning the body correctly and positioning the ball appropriately for accurate shots. Techniques for checking alignment, such as using a club against the chest, and the impact of chest rotation on the backswing are discussed. Visual aids, like modified hula hoops, are highlighted as effective tools for teaching proper swing paths, especially to younger players unfamiliar with clock face analogies. Finally, adjustments for hitting from fairway bunkers are touched upon, stressing the need to select the right club for the shot. (25:04) On-Course Golf Adjustments and Strategies This chapter explores the nuances of making on-course adjustments to achieve a better golf shot, particularly when dealing with challenging lies. We discuss the importance of properly aligning the club face and how to position your body to maintain balance and precision. Key techniques include setting the club on the ground first to determine the direction, adjusting your stance according to the slope, and gripping the club last to ensure the correct shaft length. We also debunk common misconceptions, emphasizing that accepted truisms like aiming right for a ball above your feet aren't always accurate. By understanding and implementing these adjustments, golfers can improve their shots and avoid common pitfalls like chunked or topped balls. (36:02) Strategic Golf Adjustments and Techniques This chapter focuses on understanding how to make effective on-course adjustments in golf. We explore the importance of analyzing the ball's position and the necessary adjustments to the club face and handle to achieve the desired trajectory. We discuss how to logically determine the right approach by considering the specific needs of the shot, such as launching the ball high or getting it over an obstacle. Additionally, we address the common misconception about using the club's position on the ground to gauge trajectory and explain why factors like the shape of the club's sole and the ground's slope can lead to inaccurate readings. By emphasizing thoughtful planning and execution, we highlight how golfers can improve their shots by moving beyond guesswork and developing a purposeful approach. (44:38) Improving Golf Stance and Footing This chapter focuses on the critical importance of maintaining stable footing while playing golf, particularly when dealing with tricky lies like pine straw or fairway bunkers. We explore how even the slightest movement or slippage can affect your shot and discuss strategies to find firm footing to ensure better control and accuracy. Additionally, we provide practical tips on making on-course adjustments and offer listeners the opportunity to seek personalized advice through our platforms. Whether you're dealing with unstable surfaces or looking for general golfing advice, we cover how to handle these challenges effectively. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. | Bethpage Tales and Long Drive Secrets | 18 Aug 2024 | 00:45:54
(00:01) Golf Course Tee Time Tradition This chapter explores the importance of distance in golf, featuring insights from long drive champion Michael Michaelides. Michael shares his experience working at Bethpage, highlighting the unique tradition of golfers arriving the night before to secure tee times. He recounts the intimidating presence of his former boss, Dick Smith, and explains the logistics of securing a spot at Bethpage, from early morning shifts to the allocation of bakery tickets. The conversation emphasizes the enduring customs at Bethpage, including the requirement to walk the course and the limited availability of phone reservations. Michael's anecdotes offer a fascinating glimpse into the culture and history of one of golf's iconic locations. (13:46) Navigating the Challenging Golf Course This chapter explores the concept of truly enjoying a golf course and getting one's money's worth. We discuss how struggling through a tough course, losing numerous golf balls, and hacking out of rough areas may not equate to fun or value for some players. Instead, playing from the appropriate tees and focusing on personal achievements, like making pars or birdies, can offer a more rewarding experience. We also touch on the physical challenges of certain courses, specifically a tough 490-yard uphill hole known as "Cardiac Hill," and the importance of maintaining composure under such strenuous conditions. Lastly, we highlight the evolution of caddie programs at golf courses, enhancing the playing experience, and share personal preferences for carrying lighter bags to navigate difficult terrains. (23:11) Maximizing Golf Swing Power and Velocity This chapter addresses the complexities behind achieving optimal ball velocity in both baseball and golf. We explore the surprising phenomenon where attempting to throw or swing harder can actually reduce velocity. The conversation delves into the mechanics of using ground force effectively, the importance of attack angles, and the nuances of pressure shifts in the downswing. We compare the techniques of long drivers to regular golfers, highlighting how different body movements and equipment choices affect performance. Additionally, we discuss the physical demands and potential impacts on the body, offering insights into how long drivers manage to sustain their high-speed swings without incurring significant injuries. (32:06) Impact Bag Training for Golfers This chapter focuses on an impactful training drill shared by Sean "The Beast" Fister, a three-time world champion. We explore the mechanics and potential risks of the drill, which involves using a heavy aluminum bat and a heavy bag to ensure proper impact alignments and force transfer. Despite the intensity and risk of injury, the drill is highly effective for stress relief and skill enhancement. Jeff Smith then discusses an innovative adaptation to make the drill safer: using an inflatable ball inside an impact bag shell, allowing golfers to practice with reduced risk while still improving their impact force and alignment. This adaptation highlights a safer yet effective way to enhance golfing techniques without causing injury. (36:38) Impact Bag and Sponge Training This chapter explores the innovative techniques and adjustments I made to improve the application of force in golf swings. We discuss how I experimented with different materials like a deflated volleyball and car wash sponges to create a lightweight, yet effective, impact training tool. By tweaking the weight and positioning of these sponges, I found a way to help golfers feel the right amount of resistance at the moment of impact, enhancing their ball speed and overall performance. Additionally, I share insights from a memorable interaction with Sean, highlighting the importance of finding the right training aids to achieve the desired results in golf. (40:22) The Evolution of Golf Teaching This chapter focuses on the journey of an experienced teacher who transitioned from traditional methods of golf instruction to more dynamic, purpose-based drills. He recounts a meeting with an influential figure who provided guidance and support, emphasizing the value of mentorship. The discussion touches on the contrast between the rigid, line-drawing approach he initially encountered and his own athletic background, which informed his preference for a more fluid and dynamic style of coaching. He reflects on the evolution of golf instruction and coaching, highlighting how modern techniques now recognize golfers as athletes, utilizing drills that are more in tune with natural body movements and timing. This approach, he argues, is more effective and resonates better with students, contributing to their continuous improvement. (43:27) Long Drive Techniques and Tips This chapter explores the importance of safety in training techniques, emphasizing the use of sponges to prevent injuries. We discuss how certain methods, like using an aluminum bat on a heavy bag, may not be suitable for everyone and should be approached with caution. Additionally, we touch on the relationship between skills in long drive competitions and overall golf proficiency, highlighting how a background in golf can enhance performance in long drive events. Lastly, we encourage listeners to learn from experienced professionals to improve their own golf game. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. What do you consider to be “practice”? Do you show up at the course 30 or so minutes before Tee time and hit a few balls and putt a bit? Do you ever go to the course just to hit some balls, take some chips and pitches, or putt? Have you ever gone to the course just to practice? | S2 Ep177: We Dont Need No Stinkin Rules | 12 Jun 2022 | 00:48:01
There are 192 pages of rules for the game of golf in the USGA rule book. How many of them do you follow? Sure, purists will say “all of them” but no one will believe that. Most of us recreational golfers play something Jeff Smith calls “sort of golf”. We may take a Mulligan here and there. We may use that foot wedge a bit too often. We may forget to add penalty strokes. This week Those weekend Golf Guys talk about the rules that shouldn’t exist and maybe a few that don’t but should. What good is having an accurate range finder on the golf course if you don’t know how far you hit each of your clubs? The answer is “no good”. In fact, it’s a waste. Whether you are using GPS or Lazer it doesn’t matter if you’re exactly 157 from the pin if you don’t know specifically what to hit to get 157. You study their form and think if you could just look like they do, then you could score like they do. WRONG! | S2 Ep163: Don't Nobody Have Time For That | 06 Mar 2022 | 00:49:02
Don’t nobody have time for that! Not good English but an important element to take to heart. The downswing happens, from start to contact, in about a quarter of a second. That is not enough time to realize your alignment may be off, or the swing path not right or any problem. Not enough time to notice a problem and definitely not enough time to fix any problem. That is why the pre-shot routine is so important. It is the one thing that helps you swing without making mistakes, swing and make proper contact and swing to hit the best possible shot. Jeff describes in this episode of Those Weekend Golf Guys Podcast what makes the perfect pre-shot routine and explains how to make it happen the same way every time. And that is important! Want to get better this year? No, really. Is this the year you are going to break whatever your number is? Here’s how: FORGET ABOUT THE NUMBER! During your rounds this season, don’t keep score. Instead keep track of the quality of your shots. Write down all your terrible shots, bad shots, OK shots, good shots, and great shots. Use the number of high quality shots to judge your game. Jeff explains exactly how to do this and why it will work wonders if you’re trying to improve your game. Want to enjoy yourself? Listen to this episode. Want to improve quickly? | S2 Ep156: Should You Get Fit Before Lessons? | 19 Jan 2022 | 00:46:18
Should you get fitted for clubs before you start a series of lessons? It’s like which came first, the chicken or the egg type of thing. If you are using clubs that do not fit you, a teacher like Jeff could still improve your game but it might seem uncomfortable for you to produce some of the swings, grips, stances, etc. that would be necessary. If the clubs are fit to you, then everything would seem to be more easily ;earned like the stance, grip, etc. So, the question is: should you be fit before you take lessons. Abd the answer is (as it always is) That Depends! This is the same presentation Jeff is scheduled to make at this year’s PGA Merchandise Show next week in Orlando. | S2 Ep152: Giving The Perfect Golf Gift | 12 Dec 2021 | 00:46:42
It’s time to find the perfect golf related Christmas gift for a loved one, or maybe a colleague. Our advice: First and foremost, DO NOT BUY A GOLF CLUB! But there are plenty of meaningful, useful, and thoughtful gift possibilities. This week Those Weekend Golf Guys give you three ideas. First, a nifty little doodad that you attach to your golf bag to dry your golf glove on those hot, humid, summer days when perspiration gets it all wet. Second, a new type of putter shaft that eliminates the vibrations that can ruin any putter’s aim. Barney Adams, formerly of Adams Golf, has developed it and describes it and talks about golf in general. And finally, Jeff Smith suggests giving Lessons as a gift. The whys and the wherefores that make this the perfect gift for the golfer will be explained on this week’s edition of Those weekend Golf Guys Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. | Overcoming the Scorecard Mind Trap for a Healthier Golf Experience | 26 May 2024 | 00:48:19
Have you ever considered that maybe, just maybe, the secret to lowering your golf score lies not in the latest swing technique, but in the recesses of your mind? Join me, John Ashton, and the wisdom-infused top 100 teacher Jeff Smith, as we unpack a mental game-changer for golf enthusiasts. We're redefining success one par 5 at a time, and trust me, this isn't your average golf chat. We're not just talking birdies and bogeys; we're getting into the nitty-gritty of why par is a professional's game and how the rest of us can find joy in every drive, chip, and putt. Now, let’s swing over to gear talk – the PXG Black Ops Golf Driver. This isn't just another club to add to your bag; it's a tale of transformation that began with my own fitting experience. And as Jeff chimes in from the picturesque Pine Canyon, we don't just marvel at the surroundings; we dissect the PGA Championship, celebrate Bryson DeChambeau's heart, and give John Daly's antics a fairway's worth of discussion. We're peeling back the layers of the pro game to reveal just how those recovery shots and fairway stats stack up. To cap it off, we tackle the mental tees and hazards of improving your game without letting frustration bogey your spirit. We talk handicaps and indexes, but not just the numbers – the pride, the expectation, and the very real dedication needed to swing closer to your potential. So whether you're eyeing that single-digit handicap or just looking to relish your time on the greens, this conversation is about finding your sweet spot in the game, where the love of golf meets the drive to improve. Join us, and let's put the 'play' back into 'play through. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. | S2 Ep149: Shut Up I'm Trying To Play Golf Here | 21 Nov 2021 | 00:47:42
This week Those weekend Golf Guys tackle a few ticklish situations. First, are golfers really just big wimps who are afraid of noise? Every other athlete in the world does what they do in front of large numbers of screaming fans. Why do golfers always whine if someone is making noise? And then you have been told repeatedly to take your 3 wood out of your bag because you are a recreational golfer and don’t have a fast enough swing speed to make it work right. So, here are your choices: take it out OR listen to Jeff and Learn how to use it! Another great week of golf entertainment from Those Weekend Golf Guys Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. | S2 Ep148: Is Your Swing Fast Or Only Half Fast | 14 Nov 2021 | 00:49:09
What are the limits to swing speed? What makes it so most of us recreational golfers can’t seem to swing fast enough to impress anyone? Is there anything we can do to fix it? If there wasn’t, do you think I would have brought up the subject? Jeff talks speed. How fast can you go? Find out this week with Those Weekend Golf Guys. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. | S2 Ep147: Your Wedge Shots Suck - Here's Why | 07 Nov 2021 | 00:47:58
This week on Those Weekend Golf Guys we talk about wedge shots. Why do we talk about the so much? Because they are the number one reason you can’t break 80. Your wedge shots suck. I mean you’re right there, just off the green in regulation so you chip or pitch or otherwise try to use a wedge to cozy the ball up to the hole but you skull it about 10 yards off the green or you stub it and send a chunk of dirt flying further than the ball. You swear a little, clean the mud of the wedge and try again this time getting it close enough to try that 20 footer for bogie. Maybe you should just write down a double on the score card and don’t become the entertainment for your playing partners. Jeff will fix it this week. Will you finally take his advice? And now for the good news, listen closely for your chance to win an entire barrel of Eagle Rare Bourbon and help raise money for the First Tee of Louisville. | S2 Ep146: Swing Smooth Or Are You A Basher | 31 Oct 2021 | 00:48:00
So, are you a Smooth Swinger or Bob The Basher. Is one technique better than the other? Can you change from one to the other? All great questions. And all are answered in this week’s edition of Those weekend Golf Guys Radio Show. Jeff also puts on his Rules Official Hat and answers a listener’s question on when is a lie deemed unplayable and who can make that decision? The answer may astound you. Also, for many of us we’re looking at some cold weather coming. Do we take a hiatus from golf? Move indoors? Or just keep on keeping on? Some advice on Winter Golf this week. | S2 Ep145: Golf Needs More Of Them | 24 Oct 2021 | 00:47:30
We need more women to play golf. The ratio of men to women in golf is 88% to 12%, men to women. That is pretty lopsided if you ask us. This week we interview a woman who is typical of the women that are increasingly coming to golf as their first choice for recreation. Diane is 41, a mom, a wife, has her own business and has recently taken up golf. We talk with Diane about why she chose golf, how she likes it so far, and what her main challenges are.Her goal is to as soon as possible become good enough that she becomes a valued team member of any and all scramble teams. And speaking of scrambles, John and Jeff discuss the dangerous “this one’s closer” technique of choosing the ball to hit next and why that can get you into so much trouble. Do you want to score better at your next scramble? Then don’t pick the hard shots. Oh, and for more information on Diane, and trust us, you would really like more information, simply visit Southern Diane Marie on Youtube right here ; https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8wHBms4rqqoRTFPAd_G-xA Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. | S2 Ep144: Exercises That Can Ruin Your Game | 17 Oct 2021 | 00:48:01
We all know we should get in better shape to play better golf. We have seen many different suggestions on-line and in magazines about workouts we could do that have been optimized for golf. This week we welcome Jeff Pelizzaro from 18Strong to the show. Jeff is an expert on exercise specifically to improve golf performance. He will tell us what to do and even more importantly WHAT NOT TO DO! Jeff claims there are many exercises (that have been recommended by the “experts”) that will do more harm to your game than good. As a bonus, here’s a short 5-7 minute routine to warm up either at home or at the course prior to your round for much better performance. https://18strong.com/efd Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. | S2 Ep143: Weight Difference And Spin. You Need To Know This | 10 Oct 2021 | 00:48:29
There is a caddie at The Pete Dye Course at French Lick who sent us a message that said: “…I love Jeff’s tips on how to play better. I have used some of them with the guys I caddie for up here. Makes me sound like a genius!” You, too, could be considered a genius if you just listened to some of Jeff’s tips and even play better if you used those tips! Like this week when Jeff explains how weight (not yours but the equipment you’re using) can effect your shots and then delves deeper into hot to get spin on the ball. You need this stuff. C’Mon, admit it! Your game will be better if you take these tips to heart, and maybe practice a time or two. Enjoy. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. | S2 Ep142: A Break 80 Challenge | 03 Oct 2021 | 00:48:28
This week on Those Weekend Golf Guys Jeff Smith relates just how cool it was to be live, walking the grounds at Whistling Straights for this years’ Ryder Cup. And then we receive a challenge. The caddie that worked John’s group both times he has played at The Dye Course at French Lick Resort this year, Randy, left a challenge. He has heard John and Jeff talk about what it would take to break 80. Well, not only does Randy agree with Jeff’s advice, he wants it to happen at The Dye Course with Randy as the caddie. Some rewards, some little side bets, and some great laughs at the situation abound on this weeks’ episode of Those Weekend Golf Guys Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. | S2 Ep141: Lose 6 Strokes By Tomorrow | 26 Sep 2021 | 00:47:44
This week on Those Weekend Golf Guys we welcome in a former PGA Tour player, golf course owner, and professional club fitter, Jim ward. Jim is now the “titleist guy”. A good guy to know. We all talk about the basic mistakes most amateur, recreational golfers make and why they have trouble scoring well. So, John offers copious amounts of pizza for both Jim and Jeff Smith, if they can help him shave 6 stokes off his very next round. Well, they both take the challenge and assure us they can shave 6 strokes off John’s average score by his next round easily. And they can do the same for you. Listen how. | S2 Ep140: Will Connie Find Big Foot On The Golf Course? | 20 Sep 2021 | 00:47:59
Connie Willis is the host of her own streaming shows BLUE ROCK TALK, as well as the weekend host for the overnight mega-hit Coast To Coast on over 600 radio stations across the country. Connie loves to play golf. One of the reasons she loves to play golf is on the off chance she may just spot Big Foot out there in the woods of a golf course. No, really, Connie is into Big Foot, UFOs, Aliens, and things that go bump in the night. While she tries to convince Jeff Smith that Big Foot is real, he tries to convince her she can actually hit an iron in the air and doesn’t have to settle for worm burners, no mater how often she tries to convince herself she is just “keeping it under the wind”. Those Weekend Golf Guys this week reminds us all about those on course adjustments we often time forget to make. Make sure you listen closely this week to Jeff to remember when and where all of those are.
