You Need Marriage Therapy11 Mar 202600:35:01

Marriage therapy isn’t just for couples on the brink of divorce. In fact, many healthy marriages benefit from a regular tune-up.

In this episode, Brian and Lauren are joined by Christie Orosz from Married Life Counseling to talk about why more couples should consider marriage therapy before things get serious. Instead of seeing counseling as a last resort, Christie explains how it can actually strengthen communication, deepen connection, and help couples stay ahead of common relationship struggles.

Along the way, the conversation includes some funny marriage stories and plenty of honesty about the realities of long-term relationships.

They also talk about why going to marriage therapy doesn’t mean your relationship is failing — sometimes it just means you care enough to invest in it.

2,165 Children05 Mar 202600:31:13

There are 2,165 children in Cuyahoga County right now who need someone to show up for them in court as they navigate the foster care system.

In this episode, Brian and Lauren welcome CASA of Cuyahoga County (Court Appointed Special Advocates) to the podcast to talk about what that number really represents — not statistics, but children who need stability, advocacy, and a consistent adult in their corner.

We talk about how CASA volunteers are trained to walk alongside children as their cases move through the court system, helping ensure their voices are heard and their best interests are represented. Children in foster care need someone they can count on, and this is one tangible, accessible way to step into that need right where you live.

James 1:27 reminds us that “true and undefiled religion” is to care for the widow and the orphan. For many believers, that can feel abstract or overwhelming. This conversation highlights a practical way to live that out today — not someday, not theoretically, but in real time for real children.

Dishes Belong In the Sink05 Feb 202600:33:33

In this episode, Brian and Lauren dive into a relationship advice column that hits a little too close to home for a lot of marriages.

A wife says she’s exhausted from carrying the mental load of the household — planning, remembering, organizing everything — but also admits she gets frustrated when her husband tries to help and doesn’t do things her way. So… which is it? Do you want help, or do you want control?

Brian and Lauren unpack the tension so many couples feel but don’t always know how to talk about:

What the “mental load” really is and why it feels so heavy

Why help can sometimes feel more stressful than doing it yourself

The difference between shared responsibility and silent expectations

How control, standards, and communication all play into everyday conflict

What it looks like to actually function as a team at home

From dishes in the sink to deeper heart issues, this conversation gets honest about pride, resentment, and the kind of humility and clarity that healthy marriages require.

What would you do?

ADHD – Better Doers of the Word03 Feb 202600:42:36

What does ADHD look like in the life of the Church?

In this episode, Brian and Lauren talk with Dr. Steve Grcevich, founder and president of Key Ministry, an organization dedicated to helping churches welcome and include families of kids with disabilities and mental health challenges. Together, they explore how ADHD shapes the way people experience faith, church, and community.

From sitting still in a pew to staying focused during prayer, traditional church environments can be especially challenging for those with ADHD. But what if the very traits that make church hard can also be incredible strengths in living out our faith?

They discuss:
• How ADHD shows up in both kids and adults at church
• Common misunderstandings about attention, behavior, and spiritual maturity
• Practical ways churches can become more welcoming and supportive
• How people with ADHD may actually be uniquely wired to be “doers of the Word”

Whether you have ADHD, love someone who does, or want your church to be a place where every person can grow in faith, this conversation offers insight, encouragement, and practical hope.

I’ve Been Married 17 Years, I Don’t Want to Be Touched Anymore29 Jan 202600:44:04

It’s just Brian and Lauren in this episode, catching up on life and diving into our usual biblical debates.

We tackle a bigger spiritual theme: the Bible is not a magic answer book for every life scenario. Instead, we discuss how Scripture forms our hearts, shapes our wisdom, and points us toward Christ—so we can faithfully navigate complex, modern situations that don’t come with neat, verse-by-verse instructions.

BONUS: What’s Really Happening in Minnesota?28 Jan 202600:53:55

What are people in Minnesota actually experiencing right now?

In this episode, Brian sits down with four local Minnesotans — trusted friends and family — to move past headlines and political talking points and talk about what life really looks like on the ground. From ICE activity and immigration enforcement to the emotional toll on families and neighborhoods, this conversation centers on real stories from real people.

You’ll hear firsthand perspectives that don’t fit neatly into political or religious boxes — just honest experiences from people living it every day. Our goal isn’t to tell you what to think… it’s to help you hear what’s happening and come to your own conclusions.

One of our guests, Jesse, is personally connected to a family in need during this time. If you’d like to support them, you can learn more here:

Wake Up Dead Man22 Jan 202600:41:38

Our guest is Dr. Mark Caleb Smith, political scientist and professor at Cedarville University.

https://markcalebsmith.substack.com/p/wake-up-dead-man-and-frederick-douglass

Dr. Smith joins us to talk about his new Substack article engaging the latest Knives Out film, Wake Up Dead Man. We explore what the movie gets right, what it gets wrong, and why stories like this resonate so strongly in our cultural moment.

The conversation goes deeper than film critique as we discuss how Christians should think about storytelling, moral imagination, justice, and truth—and how pop culture can both reflect and distort deeper realities.

New Year, Same Us13 Jan 202600:35:28

A new year often comes with pressure to reinvent ourselves—but what if the real work isn’t becoming someone new, but returning to what actually guides us? In this episode, we unpack the difference between horizontal morality and vertical morality, and why that distinction matters for Christians.

We talk about how cultural standards often shape what we call “good,” how easily faith can drift into people-pleasing, and which should our lives should ultimately be guided by. This conversation sets the tone for the year ahead by asking a simple but challenging question: Who are we really living for?

This One Is Dedicated to Patrick Swayze03 Mar 202600:57:19

This episode was supposed to have a topic. It really was.

Instead, Brian and Lauren spend the entire time catching up with Pastor Scott and Maureen Lessing of Grace Church — and absolutely failing to stay on track.

Every time they try to get serious, something derails it. And honestly, it’s better that way.

What follows is a chaotic, hilarious, completely unserious conversation covering Patrick Swayze, Criminal Minds, bus driving trips, Brian’s birthday, and whatever else managed to come up in the moment. If you’ve ever wondered what it sounds like when four friends with microphones forget they’re supposed to have a plan — this is it.

No outline. No structure. Just laughter and long-standing friendship.

Sinny Sin Sin06 Jan 202600:56:59

Our guest is Kyle Hoffsmith, Pastor of Family Ministry at Old North Church
https://oldnorthchurch.org/

A recent statement from a popular Christian YouTuber sparked controversy by claiming that sending your kids to public school is a sin. Kyle joins us to respond to that claim and help unpack what Scripture actually says—and doesn’t say—about parenting, discipleship, and education.

We talk about how youth ministry is changing, what Gen Z looks like in the church today, whether you can really tell what kind of school a student attends, and how churches can partner with families no matter their schooling choices.

We also highlight Old North Church’s 5th Annual Equipped Conference for youth on March 7. Register here: https://equipped2026.com/

The One Where Everybody Gets Laid Off25 Dec 202501:00:07

Our guest is Lisa Anderson from Focus on the Family’s The Boundless Show.

Lisa joins us to talk about her unexpected sunsetting season at Focus on the Family after more than 20 years of ministry. We also zoom out to talk about the broader “year of layoffs” so many people are experiencing—what God may be teaching us through loss, uncertainty, and forced transitions, and how faith shapes the way we walk through change.

This episode is for anyone navigating career shifts, endings they didn’t choose, or wondering what faithfulness looks like when the future feels unclear.

Stumbling Blocks to Growing in Christ18 Dec 202500:38:42

Our guest is Nancy Kane of the Caritas Center for Christian Formation
https://www.thecaritascenter.com/about/

Spiritual growth doesn’t usually stall because of one big, obvious failure. More often, it’s the subtle, unexpected stumbling blocks that quietly take root in our lives. Nancy joins us to talk about the hidden habits, attitudes, and distractions that can slow or even stop our growth in Christ—often without us realizing it.

We explore surprising barriers to spiritual formation, how they sneak in so easily, and what it looks like to recognize and remove them so we can continue growing in faith with intention and clarity.

Our guest is Daria Swisher.

Men across generations are struggling to form meaningful friendships—and many feel isolated, lonely, or unsure where to begin. Daria joins us to explore why male friendship is declining, what’s contributing to the problem, and whether wives should (or shouldn’t) play a role in helping their husbands build relationships.

We talk about healthy support vs. unhealthy pressure, how couples can work together to prioritize community, and why strong male friendships matter not just for men, but for marriages and families as a whole.

Conversion Therapy Is in the Courts09 Dec 202500:56:53

Our guest is Nathan Zion, attorney at Mulhall Zion LLC (https://www.mz-llc.com/).

The Supreme Court is preparing to hear a pivotal case centered on a major question: Can a licensed counselor legally engage in what the state defines as “conversion therapy”? Nathan joins us to break down what the case is actually about, why it matters for counselors, pastors, parents, and ministries, and what the implications could be for free speech, religious liberty, and mental-health practice in America.

We unpack the legal nuances, the cultural tensions, and what Christians should understand as this case moves forward.

Our guests are Dr. Ron and Anita Morrison of Hope Alliance Bible Church.

Every pastor eventually faces one of the most important transitions in ministry: passing the baton to the next generation. Dr. Ron and Anita Morrison join us to talk about how pastors can hand off leadership well—with intentionality, humility, and a long-term vision for the health of the church.

We discuss what makes succession so challenging, how to mentor emerging leaders, the spiritual posture needed for a healthy transition, and why preparing the next generation is one of the greatest gifts a pastor can give to the body of Christ.

Taking Notes From Gen Z26 Feb 202601:02:42

In this episode, Brian and Lauren are joined by Blake Kauffman, a Malone University student and founder of R7 Ministries, to talk about what Gen Z is actually seeking in Christianity today.

There’s no shortage of opinions about “kids these days” — but what do young adults themselves say they’re hungry for when it comes to faith?

Blake shares what he’s seeing on college campuses and through R7, and how students are engaging with Scripture, community, and discipleship in this cultural moment.

We discuss:

What Gen Z is really looking for in church

How young believers feel most connected to Christ

The role of Scripture in a generation shaped by social media

Why authentic community matters more than ever

What older generations often misunderstand about Gen Z faith

If you’ve wondered whether young adults are drifting or digging deeper, this conversation offers insight straight from the source.

No Brian, No Problem02 Dec 202500:39:27

Our guests are Jaime Buxton, Anna Nagirnyak, and Jen Andrews from The City Mission (thecitymission.org).

What does volunteering really look like? And what are the myths we need to leave behind? The team from The City Mission joins us to talk about meaningful, healthy, and impactful ways individuals, families, small groups, and entire churches can serve neighbors experiencing homelessness.

We unpack what volunteering is—showing up consistently, building trust, meeting real needs—and what it is not—savior complexes, quick fixes, or checking a box. Jaime, Anna, and Jen share powerful insight into how everyday people can make a difference, how to get started, and how to serve with dignity, empathy, and purpose.

The Anxious Generation Meets the Ancient Church27 Nov 202500:45:17

Our guest is Dr. Steve Grcevich from Key Ministry (https://keyministry.org/).

Anxiety is everywhere—and it seems to be hitting young people harder than ever before. But is the modern church equipped to help? Dr. Steve Grcevich joins us to unpack why anxiety has exploded in this generation, what’s driving it, and how the ancient practices of the Christian church may offer exactly the kind of grounding and healing our culture is missing.

We talk about the root causes of rising anxiety, what the data shows, how faith communities can respond wisely, and why the local church—when functioning as God designed—might be one of the most powerful tools we have for emotional and spiritual resilience.

Marriage doesn’t stay strong by accident—it grows because we choose to build it. Joe and Cindi join us to talk about what it really looks like to keep getting to know your spouse, even decades into marriage.

Joe and Cindi walk us through what it means to study your spouse: sharing your day, your feelings, your dreams, your disappointments, and the hard things. They remind us that the goal is always oneness, because when we stop learning each other, isolation begins.

The Hardest Moment as a Pastor04 Nov 202500:36:22

We’re joined by Dr. Ron and Anita Morrison of Hope Alliance Bible Church for an honest conversation about one of the most painful and often overlooked parts of ministry—when people leave the church without a word.

It’s not conflict, criticism, or even long hours that make pastoring hardest. It’s the quiet goodbyes, the unanswered texts, and the lingering question: what happened?

The Morrisons help us explore how to leave a church well, with grace, honesty, and love for the Body of Christ.

Just Open Your Bible24 Feb 202600:40:19

What would happen if we stopped overcomplicating faith… and just opened our Bibles?

In this episode, Brian and Lauren discuss a TikToker who has started a Bible reading journey and is being refreshingly honest about the experience with millions of followers online. No polished theology. No curated church answers. Just real-time reactions, questions, confusion, curiosity — and a willingness to read what’s actually there.

It got us wondering: what would change about our faith if we approached Scripture the same way?

We discuss:

Why simple Bible reading can feel revolutionary

How familiarity sometimes dulls our sense of awe

The difference between reading Scripture devotionally vs. culturally

What honesty does for spiritual growth

Whether we’ve made the Bible more complicated than it needs to be

Sometimes the most spiritual advice isn’t complex. It’s just this: open it.

Illinois recently became the first state to require such screenings for all students in grades 3–12. Dr. Grcevich helps us think through what this means for kids, parents, and the church—and how Christians can respond with wisdom, discernment, and care.

We’re joined by Pastor Leonard Tanks, Jr. of Reach Church Cleveland to dig into a tough but vital question: Is the problem really biblical illiteracy, or is it that many in the church simply don’t want to put in the work to be like Christ?

Pastor Tanks challenges us to think deeply about discipleship, obedience, and what it really means to grow in Christlikeness in today’s church culture.

Dave unpacks why retirement, as our culture defines it, may not align with biblical principles—and what God’s Word really has to say about work, purpose, and finishing well. We discuss how Christians can rethink retirement in light of stewardship, calling, and legacy.

Don’t Touch the Tools19 Feb 202600:47:43

It’s 50 degrees outside and you’re reaching for the rake… STOP. Step away from the yard tools.

In this episode, Brian and Lauren are joined by The Cranky Arborist (John Palmer), ISA Board Certified Master Arborist, to talk about why you absolutely should not be cleaning up your garden and yard just yet.

As tempting as those warm days feel, early yard work can actually harm pollinators, beneficial insects, and the health of your landscape. John explains what’s happening beneath the surface in late winter and early spring — and why patience matters more than productivity.

We discuss:
Why you shouldn’t rush spring cleanup

What’s happening in your garden that you can’t see

How early trimming can hurt trees and shrubs

The importance of planting native trees

Why every yard needs a little “Lorax energy”

And yes — he really does want you to plant a tree in your yard.

We’re joined by Dr. Nick Gatzke, Lead Pastor of Old North Church, to dig into a recent article and studies that reveal surprising dynamics in the church in 2025:

  • Why there are more small churches, yet more people are drawn to large churches—and the challenges that creates.
  • How the median age for pastors (59) and the rise of second-career pastors impacts training and leadership.
  • What the data says about overall satisfaction in pastoral ministry today.
