Marianne Jones has had an incredible 30-year career in journalism.

She has worked everywhere from the Daily Mirror to Marie Claire, was on the launch team of UK Grazia and stayed there as deputy Editor for 12 years. She was Editor in chief of Stella Magazine at Sunday Telegraph and then editor of The Telegraph Saturday Magazine and has won ‘Editor of the Year’ a record three times.

She left journalism with severe burnout at the start of 2022.

She launched ‘Been There Done That Got the Podcast’ with Kat Farmer two years ago (which has reached no1 in news entertainment charts and has had a whopping 1.25m downloads).

Marianne now steers her own ship and writes in a freelance capacity for a variety of national newspapers and magazines & has written extensively about burnout and her mum’s experience with dementia (who sadly died just four months ago).

Her area of specialism is women’s lifestyle & championing the voice of the midlife woman.

Episode 42 - Pin Drop Pod x Laura 'Biceps' Hoggins: "Get Lifted"24 Oct 202401:07:57

Laura Hoggins, aka ‘Biceps’ is one of London’s Top PTs. She is the Founder of Team ‘LIFTED’ an online coaching & community, she is a Fitness Consultant, a Presenter, the Author of ‘LIFT YOURSELF’ and a Podcast Host.

I guess she is what you might call a 'Fitfluencer'.

But unlike many social media 'fitness types', Laura unapologetically does NOT fit the 'mould'.

She is relentlessly passionate about helping people start their strength & fitness journey and navigate through 'gymtimidation'. She pioneered the art of 'being real' in (what is often) the artificial world of fitness; where most people are busy chasing unrealistic images relating to body image.

Laura is all about how good it feels, what it does for you mentally, emotionally and often what it looks like to have a shit day.

She embraces the fact that (in her words) she doesn't look like a typical fitness 'model'. And that is what makes her so relatable, vulnerable and inspiring.

But don’t misunderstand, this woman is super strong. She trains like a machine, competes in weightlifting comps, runs marathons, she EVEN does pilates.

We first met in the back of a truck on a press day for 'SAS; Who Dares Wins' and the rest, as they say, is history.

Episode 33: Pin Drop Pod x Anne Sebba - "That Woman"15 Feb 202400:56:37

Anne Sebba is a true female pioneer. A trailblazer. And yet a very humble one - I had to persuade her to record with me as she didn’t think her story ‘qualified’ as someone who has dealt with challenge, adversity and defied societal ‘norms’. You’re about to find out that it absolutely does.

Anne is a Biographer, Lecturer, Journalist, former Reuters foreign correspondent and author of eleven books for adults. Her first job was at the BBC World Services in 1972.

And she was the first woman Reuters took on as a graduate trainee, later firing when she became pregnant with her first child.

Anne has written international best-sellers about iconic women through history, many of who have faced adversity of their own - Mother Teresa, Laura Ashley, Wallis Simpson, Les Parisiennes (women of Paris living through 1940s). Ethel (Rosenberg) who was electrocuted for conspiracy to commit espionage.

Anne's current book is about the Women’s Orchestra of Auschwitz. A story of incredible female solidarity and survival.

Anne has made regular TV appearances, radio interviews, several of her books have been commissioned for film and TV. She is a Speaker for institutions around the world.

Anne is also a Mother and Grandmother. With 3 children and 6 grandchildren.

I have known Anne for 14 years…from the first days of opening my fitness business, Barreworks. These days, Anne weight trains with me, every Tuesday morning at 7.15am, come rain or shine. If ask her to do 10 reps, she do 12. And at the age of 72, she has a tenacity and self-reliance that is quite awe-inspiring to me.  She has thrown herself into every conceivable activity since her wonderful husband Mark passed away several years ago, determined to live every second of life with vigour and vitality.

I can't wait for you to meet her and I know that you will love her too.

Episode 32: Pin Drop Pod x Mandy Hickson - "An Officer, Not a Gentleman"06 Feb 202401:02:56

Mandy Hickson has over 30 years experience within aviation.
She joined the Royal Air Force in 1994 and was a the first woman to fly the Tornado GR4 on the front line, where she operated in hostile environments, including patrolling the ‘No Fly’ zone over Iraq.

Since leaving the RAF she retrained as a facilitator, speaker and coach. Drawing on her experience of calculated risk-taking, decision-making under pressure and the critical role of the human in the system, she transfers lessons from the cockpit to other management and leadership contexts.

Mandy has been invited to share her insights with some of the most successful organisations across the world. And she has recently launched her bestselling book, ‘An Officer, not a gentleman’, her inspirational journey to become a pioneering female fighter pilot.

I was introduced to Mandy via Dan Lowes, a fellow RAF and Red Arrows pilot who has also been on the podcast.

We talked about:

* ‘The human in the system’

* Taking risks

* Controlling controllables, self-efficacy (choice)

* Barriers to success

* Allies along the way

* Mandy's transition out of the military

Episode 31: Pin Drop Pod x Chloe McNiven - "Cold water saved my life"30 Jan 202401:13:15

Chloe McNiven is a former professional dancer with an impressive background in the entertainment industry. Over ten years, she worked as a performer in TV, film, and stage alongside renowned artists like Elton John, Little Mix, and Zara Larsson.
She has become an Ultra runner, and a Mum.
She has explored ventures as a DJ and building a successful property company but driven by her true calling to help others transform, Chloe set up The Soul Hub in 2020 in lockdown, the pioneer of cold tubs suitable for home usage.

Chloe has studied and mastered various techniques, including NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), she has a diploma in cold water immersion, and has become a breath work expert and a life coach.

She has since built an incredible community and sold thousands of tubs, coaching countless people through their own journey with cold water therapy.

The Soul Hub’s mission is to change as many lives as possible through the transformative effects of cold water.

And this is not based solely on theories and strategies; it derives from a deeply personal journey of overcoming significant challenges. Chloe has triumphed over childhood abuse, battled eating disorders, and experienced growing up with addicts. Her intimate understanding of these struggles allows her to connect with clients on a profound level and she is living proof that their methods work.

I came across Chloe through my own desire to practise cold water therapy at home, following a number of experiences in more extreme environments (ice holes in Chile, rowing the Pacific, daily plunges in frozen lakes in Norway) that have got me hooked on the life-changing benefits cold water immersion can bring.

Exposure to cold water is known to boost cardiovascular circulation, immunity and to reduce inflammation. It can reduce muscle pain/stiffness, activate brown fat (which keeps the body warm, controls blood sugar and insulin levels and burns calories.) But the real benefit comes from the impact on our mental state - triggering the release of dopamine, increasing libido and reducing stress.

It literally builds resilience and helps us develop a greater feeling of control in our lives.

Have a listen to the different ways Chloe and I have benefited from cold water exposure and get ready to follow our progress as we take on the Freezbrury challenge this February. We would LOVE you to join us!

Episode 30: Pin Drop Pod x Rachel Walsh - " The positive influence of Sport in the corporate world"23 Jan 202400:54:54

Rachel Walsh is an icon of British sport. She started playing hockey at the age of 12 and at 14 was selected for England U16. She played for England U18, U21 and was awarded 55 Senior caps throughout her impressive career.

Rachel played alongside her sister, Kate Richardson Walsh for many years until she moved to Germany and then The Netherlands to play semi-professionally taking on new cultures, languages and some of the best teams in the world.

Entering the corporate world, first at BSKYB, then Adidas and now Tag Heuer,  Rachel believes that so many transferable attitudes and behaviours from sport have positively influenced her career and her leadership of teams. As someone who clearly has an appetite for winning, she is also refreshingly comfortable with failing, has a high work ethic and thrives on seeing women in particular, succeed.

I can't wait for you to hear this conversation. Rachel has an infectious energy and an openness that made for a truly insightful chat.

Episode 29 - Pin Drop Pod x Kris King - 'Going beyond the ultimate'15 Jan 202400:56:24

Kris King is a seasoned ultra-runner, an elite fitness coach, and the self-proclaimed sadistic mastermind behind Beyond The Ultimate Races. If you’ve followed my journey you may know that I've participated in their brutal 'Ice Ultra' (250kms across Arctic Sweden in temperatures of -35 degrees) and the equally tough but utterly wonderful 'For Rangers' race (230km across the Savannahs of Kenya supporting the work of the The Rangers who protect Kenya's wildlife from poachers).

In essence, Kris' job is to design and execute some of the world's toughest races - making them both challenging for professional ultra runners and achievable for  extremely mediocre ultra runners, like me.

He’s most often found tearing along jungle roads in a 4×4 or flying over ice lakes on a snowmobile, giving spine-tingling speeches around campfires and kicking well-drilled emergency protocol into action when necessary. He brings together a world-class team of local guides, logistics experts and international medics who not only keep you safe, but cheer you on every step of the way.

Kris has that perfect balance of sadistic psychopath and caring, enabling, nurturing human. Which means he and his team push you to your absolute limits all the while making you believe that you can achieve the seemingly impossible.

I can't wait for you to meet him. And maybe, just maybe set your sights on one of his races.

Episode 28 - Pin Drop Pod x Oliver Patrick - 'Wellbeing is the new fitness.'05 Jan 202400:55:42

Oli Patrick is one of the World's leading pioneers of lifestyle strategy. In simple terms that means he is a thought-leader in optimising people's health.

Oli has devoted his career to exploring, championing and inspiring global businesses to apply, contemporary wellbeing strategies. He was Head of Physiology at Nuffield Hospitals where he led the largest team of applied physiologists, wellbeing advisors and nutritionists in the UK. Oli has also worked on London's Harley St, to deliver the most advanced health assessment and health evaluation service available globally.

I came across Oli at Perform X and heard him speak about wellness in the workplace - how to get companies and their people to really care about their health and well-being - and how to take responsibility for it. I loved his no-nonsense approach and how well it aligned with the goals of We Are Intrepid - focusing not just on reducing stress but also on how we can increase our stress capacity - and more than that, take responsibility for our own health, rather than devolving that responsibility to others.

I was so impressed with Oli's approach, I have since become a certified coach of his Stress & Resilience Academy - 'Future Practise'. And I'm proud to incorporate elements of this into my coaching, mentorship, keynotes and general approach to my own life.

Oli has recently launched his own podcast 'The Energy Equation' through the High Performance app/platform so you can dive even deeper into his profound knowledge there.

Episode 27 - Intrepid x Alice Law: "Unstressable"19 Aug 202301:02:02

Alice Law is a Stress Management Consultant, Reiki Master, Mindfulness Practitioner, Vedic Meditation Teacher and Speaker.

She is host of the 5* rated podcast 'Unstressable' and Co-Founder of online membership platform 'Unstressable'.

I met Alice at the very first Unstressbale retreat just last month co-hosted by Mo Gawdat whom I consider a great friend since doing his podcast Slo-Mo, and having the privilege of spending time with him as I have developed my story.

Alice works holistically with clients teaching them how to identify, limit and manage their stress through mind, emotions, body & soul. Helping people to become the calmest version of themselves so they can reach their greatest potential. She also works with companies like RBS, Coutts, Joe Media and The British Embassy Washington. She has been featured as an expert on Good Morning La La Land, the Evening Standard Magazine, CNBC, ABC and Fox News.

Alice understands stress from a unique position after she went through chronic stress for an 8-year period when she was faced with loss in every aspect of her life all at once.

During this time, she discovered the most effective processes for not just managing stress, but how to prevent it going forward. It is now Alice’s mission to help as many people as possible to dis-identify from stress and return to their natural state of calm & happiness.

She is on a mission to make 1 million people 'unstressed' every year. And I could not be a bigger advocate of that ambition.

Episode 25 - Intrepid x Tara Margulies: "Disrupt the system"19 Aug 202301:00:11

Tara is a social media marketer and entrepreneur who is passionate about everything to do with women’s health and wellness. She loves nothing more than opening discussions around feminist and taboo topics.

They say only follow social content that either inspires you, educates you or uplifts you and Tara’s content does all of these things.

She often highlights issues and articulates things in a way that are floating around in your subconscious but that you haven’t yet figured out for yourself.

Tara thinks nothing of calling out high profile 'celebs' like Chris Williamson, Piers Morgan, Steven Bartlett, Miles from Made In Chelsea for poor behaviour and patriarchal commentary.

As well as creating content for her own social media channels, Tara is a digital marketing consultant, runs wellness retreats in Ibiza and recently developed a guide about menstrual cycles and how to work with them rather than against them.

Tara is a REAL hustler. She moves not only beautifully on the pole (if you haven’t seen her pole dancing, you NEED to her out) but through difficult topics and into so many wonderful and varied career paths too.

Episode 24 - Intrepid x Jack Jarvis: "Winners never quit"19 Aug 202300:56:41

Jack Jarvis is a serving British soldier and the first person to row solo, unsupported from mainland Europe (Portugal) to North America (Miami), covering 4630 miles across 111 days - a route never previously attempted. Jack raised £65K for Braintrust, in honour of grandfather. And never mind the endeavour, Jack should have got a World Record for the immense beard he grew over a period of nearly 4 months at sea.

Only 5 months later Jack ran 250kms across the Atacama desert (Chile) in just 6 days.

Jack has a brilliant podcast - ‘Winners Never Quit’ which is how we met when he interviewed me.

Most recently, Jack has diced with death, narrowly surviving a parachute jump in which his leg became tangled in the deployment line at 1,000ft at 120mph. He was quoted on the BBC news saying  “And so my leg’s flapping around, I’m in a lot of pain, my back was facing towards the earth, my leg up in the sky.”

Jack's playful and fearless approach to life is infectious and I know you're going to love him as much as I do.

Robin Brew is a former Olympian, a GBR Swimming Team Captain who has represented Great Britain at the Olympic Games and Scotland in the Commonwealth Games

His greatest reported sporting moment came at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics when he broke the Olympic record in the 200-metre individual medley in the semi-finals.

He also competed at the Commonwealth Games in 1982 & 1986 winning a silver medal in the 200m Individual Medley event and a bronze medal in the 4 x 200m Freestyle Relay.

Episode 23 - Intrepid x Deborah Henley: "Discover your leadership Story"19 Aug 202301:09:18

Deborah is a cherished friend, mentor and someone I consider a guiding light in my life. Her own story draws on some extraordinary life experiences from the mountains of Peru, to the mid Pacific Ocean.

Deborah is a leadership communication expert who has worked for many years with senior execs from Accenture, AmEx and the MOD to help leaders and speakers discover a more empowering narrative for their lives and their organisations.

Her book, ‘Your Leadership Story’ is now a transformational programme for speakers to find their message and story in order to inspire themselves and others. She inspires and coaches speakers and leaders to evolve how they think about who they are in their role, and how they can influence others to leave a legacy that matters.

Debs combines her professional background in clinical and business psychology, neurolinguistics, and hypnotherapy with her many extraordinary life experiences: sailing the world’s oceans, being held at gunpoint, working behind the cameras at Pinewood and Shepperton Studios and leading training around the world to help leaders to become extraordinary.

And I am lucky enough to say that Deborah has coached and continues to coach me from time to time as I develop my own story and deliver keynotes to my own corporate clients. She helped me evolve what I thought was a flash in the pan TV appearance into a purpose-driven story that ultimately got me a Tedx talk and paved the way for me to become a motivational speaker and an author in the making..!

Episode 22 - Intrepid x Tom Williams: 'Bloodgate'19 Aug 202301:07:20

Tom Williams is a former professional rugby player, turned transition coach and keynote speaker.

What lies behind Tom’s story is something I think we can all identify with to some extent. Which is the power of influence. Making decisions that in hindsight, we might regret. And then having to live with the aftermath of that for a period of time, or even forever.

Tom had a highly successful rugby career and played for Harlequins for 13 years until 2009 when he was at the centre of the "Bloodgate" scandal.

A bizarre chain of events that in rugby at that time were worryingly ‘normal practise’.

Tom was initially given a 12-month ban, but it was later reduced to four months due to his cooperation with the investigation.

The incident had a significant impact on the reputation of Harlequins and the sport of rugby union as a whole. It exposed unethical behaviour and undermined the integrity of the game. It left Tom unfairly stripped of his playing career and left to deal with the stigma of the incident for many years after it happened.

Tom has since gone on to become a highly-sought after executive coach and delivers knock-out keynotes on the subjects of integrity, coercive leadership, pressure to perform and the detrimental effects of ‘winning at all costs.’

Episode 20 - Intrepid x Pamela Maynard "The most powerful woman in Technology"03 Jul 202300:56:59

Pamela Maynard is the CEO of Avanade, a global digital consulting firm. Pam has been with Avanade since its inception and has held various leadership positions within the company before becoming CEO. Pam is a recognized thought leader in the technology industry and has been named one of the "Most Powerful Women in Technology" by the National Diversity Council and more recently “Women of the Year’ at the EveryWoman Tech Awards.

Pam is also a long-standing client of mine, dating back to the days when I owned a Barre Studio, where she was a regular at the 7am classes, she has since shown her true power potential with weekly weightlifting sessions. Pam and Avanade were a huge part of the success of Girls Who Dare securing the World Record for our Pacific crossing and I’m excited to share that Avanade are also going to be supporting my next adventure, the Race Across America.

Why have Pam on a podcast about facing fears, sharing stories of adversity and human potential? Well, aside from applying a serious amount of grit to every single training session I introduce her to, Pam is an exceptional leader.

Pam is all about putting people-first, making a genuine human impact in the world of technology. She is also a very proud black woman in what continues to be a very white, male-dominated industry. The ceilings she has broken are too many to count and while she may not (yet) have tested her determination and deep resilience in physical adventure (yet!) the battles she has taken on to close the digital divide (especially for young people, women and minorities) and the humility she displays in everything she does have changed the landscape of the world she operates in and inspired so many to follow in her footsteps.

I'm pretty sure you're going to love her nearly as much as I do...

Episode 19 - Carla Devlin "How I reframed my cancer treatment to be like a season of Olympic rowing training"31 May 202301:01:00

Carla Devlin is the very definition of a 'tour de force.' And I am so honoured to say she if a friend and fellow Crossfit devotee at my local gym. But that's not the only way our paths have crossed. During treatment for triple negative invasive breast cancer in 2018, she watched me on SAS Who Dares Wins and decided that if I could plunge myself in ice holes high up in the frozen lakes of the Andes,  she could withstand the agony of wearing a chemotherapy ice cap.

Not only that, she sat in her hospital bed and wrote her application to appear on the show the following year, seeing it as the perfect 'goal' for which to regain her health and fitness after her treatment had finished.

Carla is also mother to 4 children under the age of 13. She is the main carer for her sister who has downs syndrome, following the devastating death of both her parents within a couple of years of each other.

In her 'former life' Carla also competed at the Beijing Olympics as a Team GB rower in 2008, having discovered rowing at university where she was one of only 4 girls (amidst 50 boys) to train semi-professionally.

Carla got through to the final stages of SAS Who Dares Wins in 2020 and astounded the DS with her phenomenal mental attitude at times when her physical fitness was not where it had been pre-cancer.

Carla is now a Business Development Manager for a batch testing company for banned substances in elite sport. She continues to be an all round legend and is a much-loved figure within my community.

Episode 21. Series special: Intrepid x Vicki Anstey - "Other People Are Like The Weather"30 May 202300:21:21

An end-of-series special recorded LIVE at the London Podcast Show with none other than our host Vicki Anstey.

A deep dive into some work, life updates, recent thinking and content development - and a reminder of the power of vulnerability in opening up about the impact of other people's behaviours on our lives.

Vicki introduces a concept she has been developing; that 'Other People Are Like The Weather' and the perspective that if you can discover your true inner strength, accept that the most important relationship you will ever have is with yourself, then navigating your way through the relationships that life delivers us (in all their many colours) may just bring less friction. It may be less likely to cause you to question the essence of who you are and keep you on the life trajectory you are on.

To discover that when you have nothing else or feel alone, you can rely on yourself is the absolute goal. That you already have inside you what you need not just to survive but to thrive.

Episode 18 - Intrepid x Dani Overbaugh: "Fear no distance..."16 May 202300:52:31

After losing nearly 75-pounds from a complete lifestyle overhaul, Dani Overbaugh discovered her one true passion - riding bikes.

While on a training ride in Panama City Beach, Florida, Dani was hit by a car and broke her leg. She was told that her competitive multisport days were likely over. Not one to be easily deterred Dani was determined to return to racing. In 2013 she became the youngest 2-person female team to complete Race Across America, setting a new record.

Shattering the stereotypes of women in ultra-sports Dani became the first woman to compete in and complete the EPIC5 Triathlon: Five Ironman distance triathlons in five days, each on a different Hawaiian Island. In 2019 Dani and her husband Jason set a new mixed 2-person record in a 1000-mile bike race, Race Across the West.

Dani is the author of best-selling book 'Fear No Distance' which  encourages people to challenge themselves to dream big and let go of limitations. She is also to be one of Vicki's teammates in the four women RAAM record attempt in June 2024.

Episode 17 - Intrepid x Simon Blair: "How I use ultra running to manage both ADHD and a successful business"16 May 202301:05:22

Simon Blair is the CEO of SHB, a Commercial Property company, and  Pattrn, a design-led furniture company. He is 42, married and has 3 kids.

Simon's upbringing was in his own words, 'different' and he lived with his father from the age of 5. He says it formed his independence from an early age, as well as his ADHD. Both of which, although the basis of much frustration, have been very useful attributes in his life.

Until his early 30s, Simon played competitive rugby and cricket. He has more recently found a replacement with running, with a focus on multi stage events and has competed in the Marathon des Sables, safari, jungle and arctic ultras (where he met Vicki). He is self-confessed in his addiction of the discipline, connection with nature, and above all, the people.

Simon's journey has been about navigating the successes and the failures of business and ultra running (with some revealing common themes between them), trying to find his own version of balance through the enjoyment of nature and embracing challenge - and in that, finding himself  a large dose of self therapy.

Simon is funny, loveable and shows his true strength through vulnerability. We think you will love this episode.

Episode 15 - Intrepid x Sarah July de Lagarde: "My name is Sarah, I don't want to die here."16 May 202301:05:18

Sarah de Lagarde, is the  Global Head of Communications for an Asset Management firm in the City. She has a 20 year award-winning history in corporate communications across finance and FMCG, a double Masters and is multi-lingual.

But that’s not what we met to talk about.

Sarah was working late on Friday, September 30 2022 when she went to rush home and pack for a trip to Germany with her family. She fell asleep on the tube and woke up at the end of the line, missing her stop. She lost her footing and fell between the train and the platform. The train pulled away and another train ran over her body resulting in life-changing, devastating injuries.

Sarah credited for keeping herself alive by thinking about two things -  her family, and the fact that she had just climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and simply refused to die in a tube accident. She had lost two limbs in the accident, but remarkably she managed to calm her breathing and get her heart rate down. Pure survival instinct is what kept her alive.

This is the most incredible, awe-inspiring story of facing adversity. An example of how fragile life is and that none of us can guarantee what may happen to us from one day to the next. But what we can control and to some extent guarantee is our attitude in response to the circumstances we are dealt.

It is a story of bravery, gratitude, perspective, hope and purpose. I hope you take as much inspiration from Sarah as I did.

Josie West is the UK Head of AI and IOT (yeah, we had to google it too) at global tech consultancy Avanade. She is also the Founder of 'She Flies'  a worldwide organisation that enables women to find their boldness and courageousness in extreme sports, specifically kite-surfing.

In her spare time, Josie is also a Performance Coach for career women. And we caught her just before she was about to head off to Antarctica for 6 weeks on an ice-breaker.

Vicki had first met Josie during preparations for her Pacific row, for which  Avanade was a corporate sponsor. Josie was involved in the team that was assigned to Girls Who Dare, to equip them with as much data and knowledge as possible to secure a new World Record.

How does someone with such a strong left-side brain for logic and reasoning, mathematics and facts also have this incredible ability to harness the power of feelings, imagination and intuition? Well, if you want to know the answer, this podcast is for you.

Josie’s mission is to create a voice that celebrates, grows and strengthens diversity of thought and emotion in technology and sport by encouraging women to redefine what it means to face fears.

She has already qualified as an 'Intrepideer' before we've even pressed record.

Episode 14 - Intrepid x Damian Browne: 'Why I refuse to let myself rot away in comfort.'21 Mar 202301:18:45

Damian Brown was a professional rugby player  for 16 years. More recently he has turned adventurer, high performance athlete and now content creator and  international keynote speaker.

Damian has undertaken some of the most demanding physical and mental challenges on the planet, including the The Marathon des Sables, rowing solo and unsupported, across the Atlantic Ocean (both directions) from La Gomera to Antigua and most recently New York to Galway. This latest endeavour took him on a 5,000km journey over 112 days - with the most unimaginable set backs along the way.

Damian has also made an attempt on Mt Everest which was aborted at Base Camp due to a covid outbreak. He is a multi-time Irish indoor rowing champion, holding all-time, all-category records for the 500m and 1000m distance.

I discovered Damian via his podcast, 'Deep Roots'. Which I listened to while I was training for my Pacific row. It gave me some incredible knowledge bombs for some of the technical aspects of ocean rowing, but more than that, inspiration to keep going with my journey and some invaluable insights into the mental tests that I would face.

Damian also shares my fear of water and says he can't swim more that 20 meters without sinking. Not ideal for a solo ocean rower.

Damian's mental resolve and the extremely high standards he holds himself accountable to are what I was really interested in though.

Damian's introductory statement in his Tedx talk is “I refuse to let myself rot away in comfort.” He refers to his  ‘internal witness’ being the thing that keeps his standards high. Being honest, authentic. Having no ego. Holding yourself accountable.

And he leaves us with the best piece of advice, when we doubt our capabilities; look inside. Lean into it.

I can't wait for you to listen to this.

Episode 12 - Intrepid x Jenny Wordsworth: 'Whatever you can do, or dream you can. Begin it.'13 Mar 202301:13:00

Jenny Wordsworth is a Lawyer, entrepreneur and extreme endurance sports athlete.
She has most notably completed a 700 mile solo ski to the South Pole from the Antarctic coast, where she had to be medically evacuated due to a condition called 'polar thigh' which nearly had extremely grave consequences.

Jenny has also raced the Marathon de Sables, the Arctic Ultra, the 250km Iran Silk Road Ultra Marathon and run 800km through the Scottish Highlands. Most recently she participated in a gruelling bike-packing race in Kyrgyzstan which ended in a dramatic crash and internal bleeding.

Jenny was very nearly a member of the Girls Who Dare crew when Vicki asked her to join the team following the postponement of the 2020 Great Pacific Race. Jenny found out only the day after accepting the offer that she was pregnant with her little girl Ophelia.

They made a pledge to undertake a challenge together one day and are currently busy building their campaign to set a new record for a Female Four in the Race Across America in 2024.

Alongside her expeditions, Jenny is a Lawyer and Founder of Ovum, a doctor-led fertility wellness brand focused on reproductive health.

Jenny fiercely supports female participation in sport and works with several charitable causes to inspire women and girls all over the world to participate in physical activity, whilst creating exposure for positive female role models in sport. She is adamant that anyone can follow in her footsteps to experience the elation of achieving a goal, however big or small it might be.

Listen in for Jenny's best advice on how to get started in adventure, what she always relies on in the face of adversity and why being labelled the 'sensible' one is the best compliment she's received recently!

Episode 11 - Intrepid x Tom Otton: 'Don't let your excuses today become your regrets tomorrow.'03 Mar 202301:20:42

Vicki first met Tom in the Arctic.

They were both undertaking a 250km Ice Ultra in one of the northernmost remote parts of Sweden.
Tom was running a very different race to Vicki and would arrive at the stage finish line  each day several hours ahead of her. So regrettably, they didn't get to spend a huge amount of time together. But Tom stood out - always with a beaming smile on his face the next morning, eager to get going. Keen to help others with their kit and with words of encouragement.

Nearly two years later, Vicki & Tom finally get to have that much promised catch up.

Not only is Tom an accomplished endurance runner, he is also the Founder & CEO of Create Group; the Middle East’s leading and award-winning strategic digital communications agency that spans 4 international offices, with 200 team members.

Tom takes inspiration from his adventures and applies those life lessons to leadership, mindset & personal development, allowing those principles to permeate the culture at his agency - recognized as having one of the region’s leading work cultures.

Tom has twice completed the 250km Marathon Des Sables. But his 'sketchiest' moment was scaling mountains in the UTMB OMAN, a 137km single stage race, over 42 hours of non stop racing, sleep deprived and completely alone.

Tom's  TEDx talk; ‘The power of adventure’, covers a cancer diagnosis he had some years ago and how it brought about a pivotal mindset shift & journey to relentless discovery.

Tom lives by the motto:

‘Don’t Let Your Excuses Today Become Your Regrets Tomorrow’

And urges others to to seek out adventure, be true to themselves, show authenticity, and have the courage to truly be happy.

He reminds us that often in life, the thing that looks like it’s on fire isn’t the problem.

And his best piece of advice? Don’t complain. At least not to anyone who can’t help you...

Episode 10 - Intrepid x Louise McCullough: 'The power of never giving up.'27 Feb 202300:50:22

Louise McCullough is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon, NHS Grampian and Albyn hospital, a Fitness Coach and Artist. But you are perhaps more likely to know her as the first female to pass selection on Channel 4’s SAS: Who Dares Wins.

Louise and Vicki both participated in Series 4 of the show, reaching the final stages and getting through 11 days of brutal physical exertion and mental interrogation. Louise continued for 10 hours more on the course than Vicki, to pass selection after a total of 18 hours in the interrogation phase.

Louise, originally from Northern Ireland, is the epitome of resilience and strength. One of twins, with twin brothers, she grew up with a deep sense of competitiveness with her siblings and a stubborn drive to discover her own identity.

She states her superpower as 'never giving up' and talks to Vicki about the mental strategies she has used in her career, the perspective she has gained and how these have helped her achieve phenomenal success outside of work too, in running, boxing, weight training and Muay Thai.

Vicki and Lou trade stories about their time in SASWDW, battling altitude, near-death experiences in cold water and of course, Ant Middleton's shoes...

Episode 9 - Intrepid x David Silver: 'How mental strength can help you outperform your physical capabilities.'21 Feb 202300:53:50

Over the last 15 years David Silver has conducted over 20 thousand private physiotherapy and wellness consultations becoming one of the most sought after clinicians in london and the south east.

I first met David through a shared passion for movement, namely rehab in barre fitness. The programme we developed together focused on our mentality to pain and how we can overcome barriers to movement with a better understanding of how our brains process discomfort and alert us to danger.

This knowledge, and working with David also served me extremely well during the various testing endeavours I have take on, especially 'SAS: Who Dares Wins'.

Alongside his work within sports and musculoskeletal medicine, David also presents to a variety of businesses on the corporate circuit about research on pain & neuroscience.

If you're curious about pain, our perceptions of pain and how they are linked to our performance and potential, listen in. Amongst a variety of fascinating anecdotes and stories, David tells me about his sketchiest moment, a time he truly went to the edge - and proof that your mental capacity can far outperform your physical ability, sometimes with life-threatening results!

Episode 8 - Intrepid x Victoria Rush: 'If you can't see it, you can't be it.'15 Feb 202300:58:50

Victoria Rush is an Activist/Campaigner, a Film director, and former rugby player.
But more than that, she is a game-changer.

Victoria shot to fame  through her #iamenough campaign in response to the unfair representation of women in the infamous Canterbury Ireland rugby kit ad campaign.  Where the female players had model's heads super-imposed onto their bodies.

Her outrage and quick-witted response went viral, globally, over night. Canterbury retracted the advertising and lessons were learned but acutely aware of the vast amount of injustices facing women in sport, Victoria Rush's work was not yet done.

During lock down in 2020, Victoria dreamed up the idea to create a documentary that could have a much further reaching effect and not just in the echo chamber of women's rugby. 'No Woman No Try' was born and snapped up by Amazon Prime. It brilliantly showcases the realities of being a women’s rugby player, from top tier to grassroots, an honest confronting look at the barriers facing women in the game. Featuring high profile players such as Shaunagh Brown, Stef Evans, and commentary from Ugo Monye and Sue Anstiss.

Victoria's mantra is 'If you can't see it, you can't be it'
Showing us a different side to 'being INTREPID,' Vic's dedication to breaking down barriers in sport, destroying systematic bias, promoting diversity and inclusion is incredible.
Not only has she shown fearlessness in pursuing a dream, with no prior experience of directing films, but she reminds us that equality isn’t about one side attacking another, but by all sides coming together.

That sense of community and solidarity is what We Are Intrepid is all about.

Ben has also become an (almost) world-class indoor rowing champion in the 2km Men's 50 race and has trained over the years with Mel to be able to undertake multiple 24-hour rows for charity.

Episode 38 - Pin Drop Pod x Antarctic Fireangels: "Take Part in your own Survival"25 Sep 202401:07:52

George Gilbert & Bex Openshaw-Rowe have a total service for South Wales Fire & Rescue / Mid & West Wales Fire & Rescue amounting to over 30 years between them.

Prior to their Fire & Rescue careers, George had a background in triathlon for Great Britain and Bex was a competitive swimmer, surfer, and played rugby for Wales.

They were inspired by a talk from a team of women from the British Army who had crossed Antarctica, to set up their own expedition - with no absolutely no prior experience of polar conditions.

They completed their unguided, unsupported 1230km South Pole expedition in January 2024 in 52 days, 10 hours and 30 minutes, setting a new World Record as the first Emergency Services team to do so, but also pioneering a new route from Union Glacier to the South Pole.

Their next challenge is to undertake The Great World Race this November. 7 marathons in 7 days, in 7 continents - wearing fire kit and breathing apparatus.

They are a highly respected professional partnership that lead by example and aspire to be positive female role models to future generations, young girls and women across the globe.

The Fire Angel Foundation will see female Fire Cadets and Girl Guides embark on a three month program, culminating in a mini expedition in Sweden where they will build self esteem, confidence and learn to support each other during times of adversity.

As accomplished public speakers, George and Bex have a huge story to tell of their lives, the epic expedition they planned and embarked on in 2023 and life as a female fire fighter, working in male dominated environments.

We discuss so many fascinating aspects of their story and endeavours - how they have broken barriers, including setting a new precedent for women over 45 to get expedition insurance. Something (shockingly) previously only available to men.

We discuss how they secure funding for their expeditions, the training process, how they learned to ski on the beaches of north Wales. And why they aspire to be positive female roles models to future generations of young girls, women and the LGBTQ+ community. Changing the narrative for what it means to be a girl.

You are going to love listening to their stories and the highs and lows of their adventures so far.

Episode 37 - Pin Drop Pod x Dr Sophie Bostock: Sleep, Eat, Rest, Recover01 May 202401:03:45

Aside from being the renowned 'Sleep Scientist', Dr Sophie Bostock is also a competitive Coastal Rower, and has recently been to the Out-Rigger Canoeing World Championships in Samoa. She is an adventurer, speaker, writer, general badass and I’m proud to say, my very dear friend.

Sophie studied at medical school, has an MSc in Entrepreneurship & completed a PhD in Health Psychology investigating why happiness protects against heart disease, and how to improve wellbeing at work. She spent 5 years working at Sleepio (an award winning digital sleep improvement programme) where she was UK innovation lead.

Alongside extensive research projects, Sophie has delivered Tedx and Talks @Google, and regularly features as a sleep expert in national media.

'The Sleep Scientist' was launched by Sophie with the aim of helping more people to sleep well and thrive. Sophie is a sleep evangelist with a bias for action - no surprise that we met in the world of adventure and have become friends.

Sophie’s extensive research points to sleep as being the unsung hero of mental and physical resilience - which is what I really wanted to get to the heart of in this conversation.

We talk about:

* How we unlock more mental and physical positivity and potential in our lives by addressing and understanding the impact of sleep

* What is sleep? What does it do for us? Why do we need it?

* Myths around sleep

* Sleep cycles & what they mean

* The impacts of loss of sleep on performance both in extraordinary and ordinary  environments

* The relationship between stress and sleep.

* Sophie's best advice for my up-coming Race Across America, where sleep will be limited and high performance needed!

Episode 36: Pin Drop Pod x Polar Preet - "Where are the Bears and who is Elsa?"15 Apr 202401:02:12

Preet Chandi MBE, known as ‘Polar Preet’ is a 2x Guinness World Record holder.

She has set records for both the longest solo unsupported one-way polar ski journey for a woman and also the longest solo unsupported one-way polar ski journey overall - 922 miles (70 days, 16 hours) pulling a 120kg pulk.

She was also the first woman of colour to embark on a solo expedition in Antarctica for her 700mile ski to south Pole in Jan 2022.

I met Preet after she had completed her epic WR exped, and of course asked what next. I could tell there was something on the horizon, but she kept her lips sealed!

Since the time of recording, she has confirmed her third World Record. The fastest woman to ski solo from the Hercules Inlet to the South Pole - a distance of 1,130km which she completed in 31 days, 13 hours & 19 minutes. A day, 14 hours and 34 mins faster than the previous record.

Preet is a full time British Army Physiotherapist and she has taken unpaid leave each time to conduct her expeditions.

We talk about some of the challenges and barriers she has faced in making her expeditions happen.
Preet is an absolute trailblazer.

Preet is one of the most determined, authentic, down to earth people I’ve ever met. With a mental and physical resilience that is literally awe-inspiring. And her drive to inspire other people, particularly women and particularly women of colour to smash through perceived ceilings and limitations is utterly infectious.

I hope you love her as much as I do.

Episode 35: Pin Drop Pod x Emma Harris - "Slow the F*ck down"08 Apr 202400:56:35

Emma Harris is a Marketing industry powerhouse, BrandCulture expert and leader of a transformational movement called 'Slow the F*ck down".

I first knew Emma when I worked in advertising for Eurostar, over 15 years ago. I was Head of Advertising, Emma was head of Sales and she was an absolute force to be reckoned with.

Some years later, after I left Eurostar, Emma guided the brand through everything from an overnight move to St Pancras to helping them successfully navigate several crises alongside record growth. Now, she is the Founder and Chief of brand consultancy Glow London, she helps clients across the globe to build real brands that are connected into their people and culture.

But Emma has an incredible story that I discovered recently at an event when we re-connected. A life-changing event that has prompted her to set up a movement called #slowthef*ckdown - designed to help others prevent burnout.

Emma’s was named Mentor of the Year at Campaign’s Female Frontier Awards 2022 and included in Campaign’s 40 Over 40 in 2023 as “an inspirational leader and mentor who sparked a movement.” As you'll discover in the podcast, Emma has earned every accolade and more.

* How do we successfully navigate our way through an emerging culture of ‘busyness’?

* How do we take short cuts whilst striving for perfectionism?

* The real trick to 'letting it go'.

* We all want growth, success, we want to be tested, but everyone has a tipping point, where we can move into dysfunction. How do we know where the line is?

Episode 34: Pin Drop Pod x Cyril Derreumaux - "The All-IN Mindset"28 Mar 202400:54:07

Cyril Derreumaux is French born, now American citizen, who lives in California (but considers himself a citizen of the world and is fluent in 5 different languages). He works in the wine business and in his spare time, he is better known for setting a new world record holder for Kayaking solo, unsupported across the Pacific.

His first attempt to do this was in 2021 when I did my Pacific row. I recall being in San Francisco bay doing pre-race prep and training and seeing this ‘crazy’ French guy paddling around.

We did some research to find out who he was and what he was doing and discovered he was attempting the exact same route as us, with the very same departure date.

On day 3, Cyril ran into trouble, and had to be evacuated by the coastguard.
I followed his story since and was elated when I heard that he had completed the crossing the following year in 91days and 9 hours.

The last, previous attempt to do so had taken place in in 1987 and was aborted after 64 days when they ran out of food.

What does it take for someone to be in solitary for so long?  To go back and attempt something HUGE for the second time? To face Mother Nature in such an exposing and life-threatening way? To discover things about themselves that most of us can't even imagine. Find out in this truly gripping episode.
