My SNL Story: Denny Dillon

jeudi 14 mai 2026Duration 01:11:28

To help kick off our look back at Season 6 of Saturday Night Live, we talk to one of the cast members from that season—Denny Dillon. In addition to being the very first "new" cast member to say "Live from New York," Denny is also one of the few performers to work with all three Executive Producers of the show—Lorne Michaels, Jean Doumanian, and Dick Ebersol.

But Denny's connection to SNL goes back well before that infamous 1980-81 season. She talks about meeting Gilda Radner before the show even premiered and shares her experiences as a special guest on the third ever episode back in 1975. In addition, we discuss her contribution to Anne Beatts' book "Titters" as well as returning to Studio 8H to be on a children's show prior to starring on SNL.

Denny recounts the extensive audition process she went through at Saturday Night Live, being selected as the last female cast member (beating out a future Oscar winner), and discusses the highs (and lows) of that difficult season. She recounts the uphill battle everyone faced with both the fans and the press while experiencing the thrill of live television and forming bonds that would last for decades.

Denny recounts many highlights from the season including some favorite hosts, musical guests, and sketches. She discusses her tight relationships with fellow cast members, working alongside hosts such as Elliott Gould, Ellen Burstyn, and acting in her favorite sketch of the season with Bill Murray. She also gives a behind-the-scenes look at what things were like when Jean Doumanian left the show and Dick Ebersol (and Michael O'Donoghue) took over.

The Early Years of SNL: Saturday Night Live's Original Era (Part 1)

mardi 24 mars 2026Duration 01:54:15

We made it! Our look back on the original era of Saturday Night Live comes to a close. We’ve revisited every episode, talked about every sketch, discussed every host and musical guest, and explored the behind-the-scenes stories that brought this iconic show to life.

In this first part of our retrospective of “The Early Years of SNL,” we look back on why we set out on this journey in the first place and look to answer if we succeeded in our goals. We discuss what we enjoyed the most about the process, what we learned, and what surprised us.

We take a moment to celebrate some of the writers that were responsible for some of the most iconic and classic sketches and characters in the show’s history and – finally – look back at the legendary cast. We discuss all the classic characters we loved, the iconic impressions that blew us away, and shine the spotlight one last time on the group that went from “not ready for prime time” to larger than life in just a few short years.

We hope you’ve enjoyed it as much as we have.

The Early Years of SNL: S04E01 The Rolling Stones (10/7/78)

mardi 26 novembre 2024Duration 59:15

Saturday Night Live is BACK w/ The Rolling Stones pulling double duty on the season four premiere.  An episode that may have been more concerned with the spectacle than the content, we basically get a “best of” collection of characters and sketches with nothing really new or exceptional in terms of comedy.
The Stones don’t do much to help the cause as their first appearance performing on American television in almost a decade may not have lived up to the hype.  As for hosting…all we can say is they had to call on NYC mayor Ed Koch to help them out.
There is A LOT to discuss as the cast is finally ready for Prime Time and kick off the most watched season of the original era.

Bonus Episode: The Blues Brothers - Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, and The REAL Mission From God

mardi 5 novembre 2024Duration 01:14:36

John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd were at the forefront of American comedy in the late 1970s and early '80s. Emerging from The Second City, they both joined the original cast of the Not Ready for Prime Time Players as Saturday Night Live was being formed in 1975. On that show, they helped redefine television comedy and ushered in a new era of revolutionary satire. By 1979, they had a #1 hit record with their band, The Blues Brothers, and a year later, they released a motion picture about the characters, which became a major box office success.
Daniel de Vise chronicles the lives and careers of both Aykroyd and Belushi in his recent biography, The Blues Brothers: An Epic Friendship, the Rise of Improv, and the Making of an American Film Classic. Beginning with their childhoods, the book recounts their individual comedic beginnings, explores the friendship they forged, details their joint rise to comic stardom, and culminates in an in-depth look at the making of this comedy classic.
Daniel joins us to discuss not only John and Dan but also to share stories about his research and writing process. We delve into their iconic roles and the legacy of both performers—as well as that of Jake and Elwood—helping to cement what makes these two comedic legends truly unforgettable.
Listen till the very end to hear how you can win an autographed copy of Daniel's book,The Blues Brothers: An Epic Friendship, the Rise of Improv, and the Making of an American Film Classic!
You can also purchase a copy of here!

Bonus Episode: The Creation of Saturday Night Live (w/ Doug Hill and Jeff Weingrad)

mardi 29 octobre 2024Duration 51:54

On October 11, 1975, Lorne Michaels and a diverse group of writers and performers—most of whom had little to no television experience—forever altered the landscape of American comedy. The launching of Saturday Night (later to be known as Saturday Night Live) would prove to be a groundbreaking show that would redefine the possibilities of television and evolve into a comedic institution, celebrating 50 seasons and still going strong.
Historians Doug Hill and Jeff Weingrad return to the podcast to share the fascinating story behind the show’s origin. They discuss why SNL was so desperately needed, how its unique elements came together, and the extraordinary events leading up to the iconic first episode. They also share insights into the journey of the show as it explored its identity and shaped the future of comedy.
Preorder the reissue of Doug & Jeff book (a must-have for SNL fans) Saturday Night: The Backstage History of Saturday Night Live.

Bonus Episode: How Michael O'Donoghue Helped Build SNL (...Then Tried to Burn It Down)

mardi 22 octobre 2024Duration 01:15:34

Michael O'Donoghue is one of the most polarizing figures in the history of Saturday Night Live, yet his impact on the show’s early success is undeniable. As the original head writer when the show premiered in 1975, O'Donoghue led an inexperienced writers' room that would go on to revolutionize television comedy. While he was instrumental in shaping what SNL would be in those early years, earning an Emmy for his work in the first season, his relationship with the show would quickly become strained and he would quit after only three seasons. And yet, he returned to the show not once but twice during tumultuous periods when SNL struggled to stay hip and relevant, though neither comeback lasted long or yielded the results anyone was looking for.
We’re thrilled to welcome back Dennis Perrin, who has literally written the book on O'Donoghue's life and legacy in his biography, Mr. Mike: The Life and Work of Michael O'Donoghue. Dennis joins us once again to share the complex and often tumultuous story of Michael O'Donoghue and his pivotal role in shaping Saturday Night Live.
