š How do you measure psychological safety and the impact it makes on your organization?
Stephan Wiedner is a psychological safety expert whose career has focused on developing sustainable high-performance leaders, teams and organizations. His passion for unleashing the collective potential of people has led him to be one of the co-founders of noomi.com, the world's largest network of independent life coaches. He's also developed a software called skillsetter.com, and is the CEO of Zarango.com.
Todayās discussion talks about Stephanās transition from the well-calculated and systematic world of construction management, to the complex world of understanding human behavior through coaching. This led him to starting Noomi.com as a platform for coaches to offer their services, and at the same time, for individuals to find the right coach that suits their needs. He then further niched down to psychological safety which emerged from a need to quantify the impact of coaching on organizations. He then observed how psychological safety directly correlates with high-performance teams, and this is the most common theme in his coaching engagements.
Psychological safety is about creating a speak-up culture - an environment where people feel safe to speak up, to admit mistakes, and to ask for help. This is where the perceived benefit of speaking up is greater than the fear. Mick and Stephan also talk about how to measure psychological safety and how to maintain a culture of respect through feedback. Stephan then talks about skillsetter.com, which he describes as a flight simulator for interpersonal skills, where you can prepare for turbulent life conditions even before it happens in real life.

š How do you get your message across in less than 8 seconds - the average attention span of the modern world?
A nine-time Emmy award-winning journalist and news anchor, Jane Hanson worked for NBC for 30 years prior to becoming a communications coach. With media going beyond just print, radio and television, there is a need for top executives to undergo crisis communication and media training in handling possible questions which need their voice, so that they could communicate with transparency, authenticity and empathy for those impacted by the situation. This could be observed in oneās body language, tone of voice, eye contact and choice of words, among others.Ā
At the end of the day, journalists are not just out looking for bad news, but are out to look for stories worth telling. With the advent of multiple platforms and a mere 8-second attention span to catch, communication needs to be brief, highly engaging, and emotive. To use Maya Angelaās quote, āPeople will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.

How do you effectively unlock the power of teams?
Bernard Desmidt is a renowned coach, leadership trainer and facilitator whose expertise is in unlocking the power in teams so that they can access the collective capacity and capability to achieve the greatest things possible. He's also the author of two books: Team Better Together and Inside Out Leadership.Ā
In this episode, Bernard starts off the discussion how the three African expressions - Sawabona (I see you) Ubuntu (I am because we are), and Hamba Gashle (Go in Peace), have deeply shaped the work he does in helping leaders and teams to become their best selves.
He then takes us through a discussion of three of the six linguistic acts, the first being assessments. We assess ourselves 24/7 based on an unconscious bias - a set of beliefs, assumptions and judgments we have of ourselves and what we think others have of us. Second, are assertions or statements of truth. Third, are declarations, a statement of truth that has a significant orientation to where you are heading. Applying this insight from individuals to teams, where a group of individuals start collectively learning together, collaborating to the point of interdependence, where they realize that the sum of the result is bigger than the sum of the parts.
We then conclude this discussion with the 5 disciplines of High-Performing Teams as shared in his book, Team Better Together:

In this episode of the Leadership Project podcast, Mick Spiers interviews Monica Lunin, a consultant, facilitator, and speaker who has worked with high-level organizations such as ANZ, Macquarie Bank, EY, Qantas, and Suncor. Lunin is the co-owner and director of MojoLogic, a leadership and communication consultancy, and is the author of What She Said: The Art of Inspiring Action Through Speech. We are joined today by a rising business star, Scott Ritzheimer, the CEO of Scale Architects, where he uses the Predictable Success methodology to help organizations scale and sustain success. Scott helped start nearly 20,000 new businesses and nonprofits and with his business partner started leading their multimillion-dollar business through an exceptional and extended growth phase, over 10 years of double-digit growth all before he turned 35.Ā

It was tempting to expand on the analogies as we talked about the imperative roles each team member plays and how leaders can get a team to move together. There is a difference between fighter pilots and ground infantry, between a pianist and drummer or between introverts and extroverts, and it is in the leaderās capability to lean into their strengths that will co-create a harmonious work environment.

Processor: Processors think in algorithms and are risk averse. They are naturally inclined towards systems, processes, execution, and protocol.
Synergist: The Synergist is what makes a corporate team a team. They aspire to make teamwork essential.

Jeff and Mick Spiers unpack the science of decision making and the science of trust.
Jeff shares with us the research that has shown through MRIs that different parts of the brain light up under different circumstances.Ā It builds upon Macleanās work on the Triune brain.Ā Jeff and his team proved that the neocortex process facts and figures and rational thought; the limbic brain is responsible for processing emotion; and the root brain is responsible for survival (fight; flight or freeze).Ā The surprising outcome was that the neocortex is not responsible for decision making.Ā All decision making is rooted in the limbic and root brain.
This proves that people make decisions emotionally and justify them rationally.
The real-life application of this is related to the sequence we present information to people.Ā We need to take them on a emotion coaster.Ā Start with emotion; and some rationality (facts) and then back to emotion.Ā In this way you are able to enable someone to develop a new way of thinking and to make a decision.

Management is about the process of understanding what needs to be done, developing a plan and ensuring the right work is done at the right time with the right resources and at the right cost.
A leader is more looking into the future and consider whether the business and team are working towards a great vision.Ā
A leader is looking up and out into the future and has a vision to create a new world.Ā A manager tends to look down at the immediate to decide what needs to be done right now.
The truth is that we need both. Leaders without managers will result in a great vision that is never executed and is just a dream.Ā A manager without a great leader will get things done but will not necessarily have clear vision and direction that will change the world.
It is possible for a single person to be both a leader and manager but it does require different skillsets and mindsets. There is an argument that high performance teams and organisations could get these important bases covered by different people working in unison.
Being a great leader does not automatically mean that you will be a great manager and being a great manager does not automatically mean that you will be a great leader.
Where some of the debate comes in where managers can get a bad wrap is in the leadership and management styles that some people embody.Ā If someone has an aggressive or directive style as a manager they are unlikely to be inspirational and give people a great work environment.Ā People want a work environment where they have purpose and meaning in what they do; where they feel valued; where they feel motivated; and where they feel like t

We are joined today by Cory Chadwick, an optimist and mental fitness and mindset coach.Ā Cory is the founder of The Mental Gym.
Driven by a desire to understand how things work and from a history of mental health issues in his family, Cory went on a journey of discovery to consider what mental fitness could mean.
Standing in a CrossFit class it occurred to Cory that we work on our bodies at gyms, why do we not do the same thing with our brains.Ā Why donāt we train our brains every day to build up mental fitness. This thought is what lead to the development of The Mental Gym and the concept of Living your 10. Considering on a scale of 1 to 10, do you want to just be satisfied with a 6 or 7 or do you want to live your 10?
Mental fitness is about proactive exercise and wellness for our brains. Think of working out your mind the same way you would consider working out your body.Ā Doing it once or twice doesnāt make you fit.Ā The secret here is consistency and working on it every week.
If you treat your mental health like a lifestyle it will habitualise in a positive way just like brushing your teeth.
As a leader we do need to consider our own mental fitness so we can perform at our best.Ā We also need to consider the mental health and wellbeing of the team members that we are responsible for taking due care of. We have a great responsibility as a leader. How we show up; how we treat other people has a huge impact on those around you.
Treat people like they matter and they will matter.Ā Lead with your values and live by your values. Treat people with the respect they deserve.
Showing up as your authentic self, being vulnerable and being human as a leader provides an environment where your team can also show up as their authentic self. This vulnerability builds great trust as your team see that you are indeed human and self-aware of what you are good at and what you are not.
One key to mental fitness and health is live with purpose and intent. To look for sources of sustainable and renewable joy and fulfilment.
