Pope Leo XIII’s 4th Encyclical on the Holy Rosary19 Nov 202200:14:06

Pope Leo XIII's 4th Encyclical on the Holy Rosary

VI È BEN NOTO

ENCYCLICAL OF POPE LEO XIII ON THE ROSARY AND PUBLIC LIFE*

To the Bishops of Italy. Venerable Brethren,

You know how We place amid present dangers Our confidence in the Glorious Virginof the Holy Rosary, for the safety and prosperity of Christendom and the peaceand tranquillity of the Church. Mindful that in moments of great trial, pastors and people have ever had recourse with entire confidence to the august Mother of God, in whose hands are all graces, certain too, that devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary is most opportune for the needs of these times, We have desired to revive everywhere this devotion, and to spread it far and wide among the faithful of the world. Often times already We, in recommending the pious practice of devoting October to honouring Our Lady, have pointed out Our reasons and hope for so doing, and the forms to be observed; and the entire Church, docile to Our desires, has ever replied by special manifestations of devotion; and now is making ready to pay to Mary, during a whole month, a daily tribute of thedevotion so dear to it. In such pious rivalry Italy has not been behind-hand, for devotion to Our Lady is deeply and widely rooted in this land; and We doubt not that this year too, Italy will set a glorious example of love for the august Mother of God, and will give Us fresh reasons for consolation and hope. Nevertheless We cannot do less than address to you, Venerable Brethren, a few words of exhortation, so that with particular and renewed zeal the month dedicated to the Most Holy Virgin of the Rosary may be sanctified in every diocese of Italy.

2. It is easy to imagine what reasons We have for doing this. Since God called Us to govern His Church on earth, We have sought to use every possible means that We deemed suitable, for the sanctification of souls and the extension of the reign of Jesus Christ. We have excepted from Our daily solicitude no nationand no people, mindful that Our Redeemer shed His precious blood on the Cross and opened the reign of grace and of glory for all. None, however, can be surprised that We showed special care for the Italian people, for Our Divine Master Jesus Christ chose, from out all the world, Italy to be the seat of His Vicar on earth, and in His providential designs appointed Rome to be the capitalof the Catholic world. On this account the Italian people is called upon to live close to the Father of the whole Christian family, and to share in a special way in his sorrows and his glory. Unfortunately We find in Italy much to sadden Our souls. Faith and Christian morals, the precious inheritance be queathed by Our ancestors, and in all past rimes the glory of Our country and of Italy's great ones, are being attacked artfully and in covert ways, or even openly, with cynicism that is revolting, by a handful of men who seek to rob others of that faith and morality they have themselves lost. In this more especially is seen the work of the sects, and of those who are more or less their willing tools. Above all, in this city of Rome, where Christ's Vicar has his See are their efforts concentrated and their diabolical designs displayed with ferocious obstinacy.

3. We need not tell you, Venerable Brethren, with what bitterness Our soul is filled at seeing the danger there is for the salvation of so many of Our beloved children. And Our sorrow is greater because We find it impossible to oppose such great evil with that salutary efficacity We would desire and that We have the right to use, for you know, Venerable Brethren, and all the world knows, the state to which we are reduced. On this account We feel a still greater desire to call upon the Mother of God and to ask her help. Let all good Italians pray for their misguided brethren, for their common Father the Roman Pontiff, that God, in His infinite mercy, may hear and answer the prayers of a father and his sons. And Our most lively and sure hope is placed in the Queen of the Rosary, who has shown herself, since she has been invoked by that title, so ready to help the Church and Christian peoples in their necessities. Already have We recorded these glories and the great triumphs won over the Albigenses and other powerful enemies, glories and triumphs which have not only profited the Church, afflicted and persecuted, but also the temporal welfare of peoples and nations. Why in this hour of need should We not behold again such marvels of the power and goodness of the august Virgin, for the good of the Church and its Head, and of the whole Christian world, if the faithful only revive, on their part, the magnificent examples of piety given by their fore fathers, under similar circumstances? And to make this most powerful Queen more and more propitious, We would honour her more and more in the invocation of the Rosary, and increase this devotion. And to this end We have made a double of the second class for all the Church of the Feast of the Rosary. And for the same purpose We ardently desire the Catholics of Italy, with lively faith, especially during this month of October, to invoke this august Virgin and to do loving violence to her mother's heart, and to pray to her for the triumph of the Church and the Apostolic See, for the liberty of the Vicar of Jesus Christ on earth, and for peace and public prosperity. And since the effects of such prayers will be proportionate to the dispositions of those offering them, We ardently exhort you, venerable brethren, to devote all your care and zeal to kindle among those committed to your charge a strong, living, and active faith, and to call on all to return by penance to grace and to the faithful fulfilment of all their duties. Among such duties, considering the state of the times, must be reckoned as paramount an open and sincere profession of the faith and teaching of Jesus Christ, casting aside all human respect, and considering before all things the interest of religion and the salvation of souls. It cannot be concealed that, although thanks to the mercy of God religious feeling is strong and widely spread among Italians, nevertheless by the evil influence of men and the times religious indifference is on the increase, and hence there is a lessening of that respect and filial love for the Church which was the glory of our ancestors and in which they placed their highest ambition. Let it be your work, venerable brethren, to revive this Christian feeling among your people, an interest in the Catholic cause, a confidence in Our Lady's help, and a spirit of prayer. It is certain that the august Queen, invoked thus well by her many sons, would deign to hear their prayer, console Us in Our sorrow, and crown Our efforts for the Church and for Italy, by granting better times to both. With these desires, We bestow on you, venerable brethren, and the clergy and people committed to your care, the Apostolic Benediction as a promise of graces and favours of the highest kind from heaven.

Given at the Vatican this 20th day of September 1887.

Traditional (Latin Extraordinary) Form of Confession vs New Rite (Novus Ordo)04 Nov 202200:18:36

Today we take a deep dive into the Traditional (Latin Extraordinary) Form of Confession and compare it to the New Rite (Novus Ordo) of Confession.

The penitent enters the confessional and says, “Bless me Father, for I have sinned.”

The penitent makes the Sign of the Cross while the priest says, “The Lord be in Thy heart and on thy lips, that thou mayest rightly confess thy sins. In the name of the Father +, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.”

The penitent tells the priest how long it has been since his last Confession, then recites the number and kind of his sins. The penitent concludes with a statement to the effect of, “For these and all my other sins, which I cannot presently remember, I am heartily sorry.”

The priest may ask some questions and give some advice. The priest will assign a penance & ask you to make an Act of Contrition.

The priest then says: “Misereátur tui omnípotens Deus, et dimíssis peccátis tuis, perdúcat te ad vitam ætérnam. Amen.” (In English: “May almighty God have mercy on thee, and forgive thee all thy sins, and bring thee to life everlasting. Amen.”)

Holding his right hand over the penitent, the priest says: “Indulgéntiam, absolutiónem, et remissiónem peccatórum tuórum tríbuat tibi omnípotens et miséricors Dóminus. Amen.” (In English: “May the almighty and merciful God grant thee indulgence, absolution, and remission of all thy sins. Amen.”)

Still holding his right hand over the penitent, the priest removes any impediments to the validity of the absolution he is about to give: “Dóminus noster Jesus Christus te absólvat; et ego auctoritáte ipsíus te absólvo ab omni vínculo excommunicatiónis et interdícti, in quantum possum et tu índiges.” (The English translation: “May our Lord Jesus Christ absolve thee; and by His authority I absolve thee from every bond of excommunication and interdict, in proportion to my power and thy need.)

The priest recites the words of absolution while both the priest and the penitent make the Sign of the Cross. [A bishop makes the Sign of the Cross three times]: “Deínde ego te absólvo a peccátis tuis, in nómine Patris +, et Fílii, et Spíritus Sancti. Amen.” (In English: “Thereupon, I absolve thee from thy sins, in the name of the Father +, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.”)

Finally, the priest says a prayer for the remission of temporal punishment due for sins: “Passio Dómini nostri Jesu Christi, mérita Beátæ Maríæ Vírginis, et ómnium Sanctórum, quidquid boni féceris, et mali sustinúeris, sint tibi in remissiónem peccatórum, augméntum grátiæ et præmium vitæ ætérnæ. Amen.” (In English: “May the passion of our Lord Jesus Christ, the merits of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and of all the Saints, whatever good you shall have done, and evil you shall have endured, be to you unto remission of sins, increase of grace, and reward of eternal life. Amen.”)

Learn the Act of Contrition in Latin Easily21 Oct 202200:16:24

Here is the Act of Contrition in Latin:

Actus Contritionis Deus meus, ex toto corde poenitet me omnium meorum peccatorum, eaque detestor, quia peccando, non solum poenas a Te iuste statutas promeritus sum, sed praesertim quia offendi Te, summum bonum, ac dignum qui super omnia diligaris.

Ideo firmiter propono, adiuvante gratia Tua, de cetero me non peccaturum peccandique occasiones proximas fugiturum. Amen.

Join me next week as we take a closer look at the words of Absolution.

Devout Method of Hearing Mass iii13 Aug 202200:09:39

Today we will be covering a devout method of hearing the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass (Part iii) taken from:

The Ursuline Manual, or a Collection of Prayers, Spiritual Exercises Etc. Interspersed With The Various Instructions Necessary for Forming Youth to the Practice of Solid Piety Originally Arranged for the Young Ladies Educated at the Ursuline Convent, Cork.

From Communion to the End of Mass

Divine Lord! thou hast at length satisfied the earnest desires of my heart. I possess thee, I embrace thee ; make me entirely thine. Jesus ! thou who constitutest the happiness of the blessed ! is it possible that thou art at this moment present in my heart ! Yes I firmly believe that I possess thee, with all the treasure of thy merits. O most sacred Virgin! who so long bore, and so fervently loved the God I now possess, praise and magnify his goodness. Offer him for me those joys which filled thy pure soul at the moment of his incarnation in thy sacred womb, and assist me to make some return for his un-bounded mercies. Remember, divine Lord! that one visit from thee would suffice to sanctify the greatest sinner: permit not then that I should receive thee in vain; let not thy precious blood fall on my heart, without producing therein the fruits of virtue thou hast so long expected. Take me out of life this moment, rather than permit me to relapse into sin. Adorable Lord of heaven and earth! thou beholdest in my heart thy beloved Son ; he is all mine; his abundant merits belong to me at this moment. I offer them to thee, my God ! and in return I ask for the most ardent love, sincere humility, and above all, the grace never to offend thee by any mortal sin.

After Communion

I return thee my most fervent thanks, amiable Jesus ! for the blessing I now enjoy; I praise and glorify thee with all my soul, for the numberless favours I have received from thy goodness and liberalrty. 1 adore thee now reposing in my breast, my God and my All ! a thousand times welcome! most gracious Lord Jesus Christ ! how sweet, mild, and merciful art thou to all those who invoke thee : for when I had no being, thou didst create me ; when I was thy enemy, thou earnest from heaven to redeem me ; and because without thee I was helpless, thou hast given me thy sacraments, with numberless graces, to fortify my weakness, and facilitate my salvation ; but to crown all thy favours, thou givest me thy own body and blood for the nourishment of my soul. Thou shouldst retire from me, because I am a sinful creature, — dust and ashes, — the destined food of worms; — yet thou comest expressly to visit me, and take possession of my whole soul. Lord, my God, how wonderful is thy name throughout the earth ! What return shall I make to the Lord for all he has given to me ? that thou wouldst fill my lips with praises, that all the days of my life I may sing forth thy glory and celebrate thy wonderful works. Bless my God for me, ye Angels and Saints ; thank my Lord for me ; love my Jesus for me ; and sing forth his praises to supply for my deficiency. Beauty ever ancient and ever new! Too late have I known thee, too late have I loved thee. When shall the time come, that, disgusted with all earthly things, I shall seek my happiness in thee alone, and find rest to my soul ? heavenly manna ! O adorable sacrament ! inestimable pledge of God's love to mankind ! standing memorial of Christ's passion and death! inexhaustible fountain of divine grace! boundless mercy ! divine charity ! sacred fire ever burning and never decaying ! Hail, merciful Jesus ! my only happiness and delight ! the joy of my soul, and my portion for ever ! May my soul be sensible of thy adorable presence, and may I taste how sovereignly sweet thou art in the sacrament of thy love. Purify my heart, divine Lord ! from the dross of all earthly affections ; enable me to curb my vicious inclinations, and to withstand the dangerous attacks of my infernal enemy — deign to bestow on me those virtues that will render me pleasing in thy sight, particularly ardent charity, profound humility, heroic patience, and perfect obedience. ! may I prove the extent of my gratitude by the most constant fidelity in thy service, and may I rather die than ever again offend thee by any mortal sin. that I could have the happiness of seeing thee loved and faithfully served by all creatures. Vouchsafe to let the light of thy countenance shine upon those who are in the darkness of infidelity ; and dispel their errors, that they may embrace the truth, and faithfully practice all it requires. Grant peace and union to all Christian Princes, and preserve us from the dreadful scourges of war, famine, and pestilence. Convert all those who are in the unhappy state of mortal sin, and reconcile those who are at variance. Have mercy on my parents, friends, benefactors, and enemies, and mercifully grant them all the graces they stand in need of. Reform all abuses, and remove all scandals from thy Church. Comfort all that are under any affliction, sickness, or violence of pain. Support those who are under temptation; protect such as are in danger; and grant the grace of a happy death to all those who are in their last agony. Extend thy mercy likewise to the souls of all the faithful departed, and mercifully admit them to the enjoyment of thy eternal glory. Grant to us all relief in our respective necessities, remission of all our sins, the grace of final perseverance, and life everlasting.  Amen.

Devout Method of Hearing Mass Part ii09 Aug 202200:13:48

Today we will be covering a devout method of hearing the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass (Part ii) taken from:

The Ursuline Manual, or a Collection of Prayers, Spiritual Exercises Etc. Interspersed With The Various Instructions Necessary for Forming Youth to the Practice of Solid Piety Originally Arranged for the Young Ladies Educated at the Ursuline Convent, Cork.

At the Preface

Permit not, Lord ! that my mind should wander from the consideration of the adorable mysteries now celebrating on this altar. Enlighten my understanding, inflame and animate every affection of my heart, that I may be attentive to these miracles of mercy and love. give me to understand the breadth, and length, and height, and depth (Ephes. in. 18) of that love which will soon veil thy glories under the humiliating forms of bread and wine ! that my heart were penetrated with ardent love, that I might be enabled to acknowledge less unworthily thy infinite greatness and boundless mercies. Prostrate in spirit before that throne of glory where the cherubim and seraphim, with all the heavenly host, adore thy awful Majesty, I implore thee to receive my homage, in union with the transports of admiration and love with which they incessantly proclaim that thou art Holy, Holy, Holy, and that the Lamb  which was slain is worthy to receive power, and divinity, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and benediction, forever and ever. Amen. — Apoc. v. 12.

From the Canon to the Elevation

Ah ! my God, why do I not sigh for thy coming on this altar, with as much ardour as did the ancient patriarchs and prophets ; with as much pure desire as thy blessed Mother, the first and most perfect adorer of thy sacred humanity. I offer thee my heart, soul, mind, strength, desires, and affections, in union with the admirable dispositions of thy saints; but particularly in union with the love and devotion of that incomparable Virgin, in whose pure soul, prepared by thy divine spirit, and adorned with the treasures of thy grace, thou didst delight to dwell. I offer thee, to atone for my coldness and tepidity, her sacred heart, with all the love with which it ever was, and for all eternity will be, animated. I offer thee her heavenly contemplations, her purity, profound humility, and sufferings at the foot of the cross ; beseeching thee, through her intercession, to pardon the iniquities of her unworthy servant. And thou, O most sacred Virgin ! obtain for me a share in the holy dispositions that adorned thy soul from the moment of thy immaculate conception ; since I am also destined for the residence and sanctuary of  God. assured refuge of sinners ! I address thee with the most lively confidence, beseeching thee to obtain that I may be worthily replenished with him who was born of thee — with him who is the desire and expectation of all nations.

At The Consecration

O Jesus! brightness of eternal light, unspotted mirror of God’s Majesty! My sovereign Life, and only Good ! thou art He whom I have so long, so ardently desired ! He whom I acknowledge for my Lord and my God, and who alone art worthy of the homage and adoration of men and angels. Monarch of heaven and earth! mighty in word and work! (Luke, xxiv. 19.) Verily thou art a hidden God, the God of Israel, the Saviour, (Isaiah, xlv. 15 ;) but the shades which conceal thy majesty, are those of the tenderest love. Divine Jesus ! thou art now glorified by the homages of numberless angels who invisibly assist at these sacred mysteries. how should their adorations and love confound and humble me, since it is not for them, but for me, that thou art hidden and degraded on the altar ! holy Angels ! blessed spirits ! love and adore the Almighty for me, and redouble your ardours to supply for my insufficiency.

From the Elevation to the Pater Noster

Adorable Jesus ! the happy moment is fast approaching, when that sacred body which was immolated on the cross will abide in my heart, and that precious blood which was shed with so much anguish for my ransom, will be really and truly applied as a sovereign remedy to my soul. My God ! is it possible that thou, whom the heavens cannot contain, will confine thy greatness within the narrow limits of my heart; that thou, before whom the angels themselves are not pure, will unite thyself to a soul like mine, disfigured and defiled with innumerable crimes ! Lord, with the most sincere conviction of my wretchedness, I protest with the centurion, that I am not worthy thou shouldst enter under my roof. — St. Matt. viii. 8. Shall I then say with St. Peter : Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful creature? — St. Luke, v. 8. Shall I depart from this sanctuary, which I am unworthy to enter, and relinquish that happiness, for which my soul sighs, but which I shall never merit ? Ah ! no, my divine Saviour ! I will not leave thee, for to whom should I go but to thee? Hast thou not invited all that labour and are heavy laden (St. Matt. ix. 28) to approach thee! Therefore, not- withstanding the miseries of my soul, I come, perfectly convinced that if thou wilt thou canst make me clean. — St. Matt. viii. 2. I am weak, but thou wilt be my sovereign strength ; I am poor, but thou wilt adorn my soul with the riches of thy grace ; thou wilt destroy my pride, by the force of thy profound humiliations in the centre of my soul ; thou wilt warm my tepidity, by the fire which thou camest on earth to enkindle, (St. Luke, xii. 49 ;) thou wilt communicate to me thy divinity itself, that I may not live, but that thou mayest live in me. Come, then, my God ! the desire of the everlasting hills, (Gen. ix. 26,) the friend of sinners, the comfort of the afflicted, the hope of all the ends of the earth, (Ps. lxiv. 6.) come into my house, and let salvation enter with thee, (St. Luke, xix. 9 ;) come, that my soul, united with thee, may magnify its Lord, and my spirit rejoice in God, my Saviour. — Ibid. i. 46, 47.

From the Pater Noster to the Agnus Dei

Father of my soul, who residest in the highest heavens, and yet attendest to the wants of thy children on earth, behold thy prodigal but repentant child, who returns to thee, penetrated with regret for ever having sought to shake off that yoke which thou thyself hast pronounced to be sweet and light — St. Matt. xi. 30. Pardon me, my divine Benefactor ! for thou knowest the clay of which I am formed ; thou rememberest that I am but dust.^ — Ps. c. 11, 14. Forget my criminal abuse of thy mercies, for the sake of Him in whose name I dare to address thee, as my Father, my Friend, and only happiness. Give me thy divine spirit, that spirit of love and adoption, which will cause me to have recourse to thee in all my necessities. Give a docile, obedient, and submissive heart, that thy supremely just and adorable will may be the rule of all my actions. But, above all, O divine Lord! give me the bread of life, the food of immortality ; give me thy divine Son ! give me him in whom thou wert always well pleased, (St. Matt. iii. 17,) that being instructed by thy wisdom and thy word, I may never deviate from the respect and love due from a child to the best and most indulgent of fathers.

From the Agnus Dei to Communion

Lamb of God, who takest away the sins of the world ! let me not be excluded from a share in thy universal mercies. Cleanse and purify my soul; adorn it, I entreat thee, with those virtues which will render me less unworthy of participating in the food of angels. Adorable Jesus ! I am, it is true, wretched and unworthy; but hast thou not denominated thyself the Father of the poor ; and shall not that endearing title encourage me to recur to thee, as to my Father, and the best of friends? Yes, my God, I will go to thee, for thou well knowest that had I the heavens and the earth at my disposal, I wonld sacrifice all, rather than forego the happiness I am now going to enjoy. What have I in heaven, and besides thee what do I desire upon earth ? Thou art the God of my heart, and the God that is my portion forever. — Ps. lxxii. 25, 26.  Amiable Virgin ! thou who art styled by excellence Blessed among women, show thyself now my tender mother and powerful advocate ; obtain for me the grace to receive with faith, purity, fervour, and humility, the divine object of thy ardent love. Blessed spirits ! you who unceasingly attend, love, and adore the Almighty Being I am about to receive, intercede for me at this awful moment, and supply by your ardent charity for the tender devotion with which I would wish to receive my Redeemer under my roof.

At the Confiteor

O divine Redeemer of my soul ! into thy sacred heart I cast all my offences ; they arc not more numerous than thy mercies, nor can they equal the tenderness of that love which invites me to receive thee. Jesus ! veiled as thou art, I acknowledge thee for my Lord and my God; I adore thee with all the powers of my soul and I fervently love thee with my whole heart.

Devout Method of Hearing Mass Part i29 Jul 202200:14:38

Today we will be covering a devout method of hearing the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass taken from:

The Ursuline Manual, or a Collection of Prayers, Spiritual Exercises Etc. Interspersed With The Various Instructions Necessary for Forming Youth to the Practice of Solid Piety Originally Arranged for the Young Ladies Educated at the Ursuline Convent, Cork.

From the Beginning of Mass to the Gloria

Divine Jesus ! Mediator of the New Testament I who didst ascend into heaven, to appear in the presence of God for us, (Heb. ix. 24.) yet daily descendest on our altars, to renew that sacrifice by which we were all redeemed, mercifully penetrate m y heart with a just sense of the happiness and the advantage of assisting at a sacrifice, by which I can abundantly satisfy the justice of God, honour his divine Majesty, acknowledge his infinite mercies, and obtain the graces necessary for serving him on earth and enjoying him in heaven. Permit me, O divine Jesus ! to ascend this new Calvary with thee, that my whole soul may do homage to the greatness of thy majesty; that my heart, with all its affections, may acknowledge thy infinite love; that my memory may dwell on the admirable mysteries here renewed; and that the sacrifice of my whole being may accompany that which thou art about to offer. Alas! I am unworthy to join with thy minister in adoring thee ; I can neither feel the extent of thy blessings, nor acknowledge them as I ardently desire to do; but, O Lord ! be thou with me, that by thee, and with thee, I may worthily assist at these tremendous mysteries.

From the Gloria to the Epistle

SAVIOUR of my soul! how sweet is the hope, that thou hast absolved me from my transgressions : that thy sacred blood has washed them away ; and that thou art about to seal my pardon by the most precious gift thou canst possibly bestow. DIVINE Lord ! let this encouraging hope be realized ; say to my soul, that thou art her salvation. With the fervent penitent of the gospel, I cast myself at thy sacred feet ; let me hear with her, from thy own adorable lips, the consolatory sentence of peace and mercy; let me experience with her, the conviction that thou hast accepted my repentance, and granted me pardon. Alas ! I well know that I have neither her humility nor her contrition, her fervour nor her love to offer ; but, my God ! I venture to say, that my hopes are established on still surer grounds than would be those virtues, were I happy enough to possess them. If many sins were pardoned her, because she loved thee much, still greater crimes will be remitted to me, because thou hast infinitely loved me, a wretched creature. adorable Jesus ! in thy love and mercy I firmly trust ; deign then to do for me what is altogether above my strength and capacity; purify my soul, and prepare it for the reception of thy life-giving sacrament.

At the Epistle & Gospel

I believe, my God! every article proposed by the holy Catholic Church to my belief; and through thy grace I am disposed to die, rather than relinquish the precious gift of faith, which elevates me to the adoption of the Sons of God, and makes me heir and joint-heir with Jesus Christ. Eom. viii. 15, 17. I believe; O divine Lord ! penetrate my heart and soul with the entire import of these short but comprehensive words, and let them produce one of those prodigies of grace and conversion, which so often followed from similar confessions. I believe all thou hast revealed, without exception or reserve ; for thou hast the words of eternal life, and thou art likewise the way and the truth, St. John, 30 xix. 6. On thy unerring word I also most firmly believe that thou art really present in the august sacrament of which I am about to participate. what miracles are contained in this sacred and ever adorable mystery ! Incomprehensible as they are, I believe them all ; I adore thy omnipotence, which is a sufficient pledge of their possibility ; and thy boundless love proves to me, in an endearing manner, that they are real. Were my faith as animated as I hope it is sincere, my heart would be inflamed at the near approach of its heavenly guest, and every movement of my body and soul would be a transport of gratitude and ardent love. Come, then, Lord! thou art the God in whom I firmly believe. Come, for thou art the support and term of my hope, and thou art, by excellence, the adorable object of my most fervent love. Come, enliven and increase in my soul the divine virtues infused therein on my admission into the bosom of thy Church. Come, and purify my baptismal robe, that I may present myself before thee with a nuptial garment, and may not deserve to be excluded from the marriage feast.

Atthe Offertory

Receive, Lord, this spotless Host, which thy minister offers thee in the name of thy Church. Receive, eternal Majesty, this oblation of bread and wine, which will soon become the body and blood of Jesus Christ, who, to render thee in the name of weak mortals the adoration thou meritest, vouchsafed to clothe himself with our miseries — to become susceptible of death, and to immolate himself daily on our altars as the precious victim of our salvation. omnipotent Lord ! behold me at thy feet loaded with miseries, and charged with innumerable debts, which would overwhelm me, were I not provided by thyself with a treasure of infinite value to acknowledge thy mercies, to satisfy thy justice, and to obtain for myself and others the graces thou desirest to bestow. Animated with the most lively confidence in the merits of my Redeemer, I offer thee once more his sufferings and death ; and I make this offering for the great ends for which he instituted this adorable mystery. I offer thee this sacred Victim to adore thee as my God, to testify my love for thee, my Sovereign Benefactor ! to thank thee for the blessings thou hast bestowed on all mankind ; to implore thy mercy on behalf of all those in a dreadful state of mortal sin, and to obtain the deliverance of the suffering souls in purgatory. To this offering: I unite an unreserved oblation of my whole being, and I desire to do so with the most generous and ardent love. I entreat thee, my God ! by the perfect oblation of my divine Saviour on the altar of the cross, to pardon my past ingratitude, and to grant me the inestimable grace of preservation from all mortal sin. But, my sovereign Benefactor ! how shall I thank thee for the precious gift of thy body and blood which thus enables me to satisfy my obligation! This gift, which the homage of angels and men would be insufficient to acknowledge, can only be repaid by itself. I then offer thee my Redeemer himself, as a sacrifice of praise, and pay my vows to thee, (Ps. cxv. 18,) in union with him in whom from all eternity thou wert well pleased.

Asperges Me (Latin & English)01 Jul 202200:04:30

Greetings listeners of the Latin Prayer Podcast - today we will learn the Asperges Me - a prayer that I discovered first 7 years ago in a small prayer manual that I inherited and would say to myself whenever I left or entered my home and blessed myself with Holy Water from the little fount at our door. A few years later I discovered that this prayer is the great Antiphon that precedes the celebrating of a Traditional High Mass and it is glorious to behold. Still I take simple joy in praying it silently whenever I bless myself with Holy Water.

Asperges me, Domine, hyssopo et mundabor, Lavabis me, et super nivem dealbabor. Miserere mei, Deus, secundum magnam misericordiam tuam.

Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed: Thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow. Have mercy on me, O God, according to thy great mercy.

15 Prayers of St. Bridget of Sweden for 1 Year17 Jun 202200:21:58

First Prayer

Our Father - Hail Mary O Jesus Christ! Eternal Sweetness to those who love Thee, joy surpassing all joy and all desire, Salvation and Hope of all sinners, Who hast proved that Thou hast no greater desire than to be among men, even assuming human nature at the fullness of time for the love of men, recall all the sufferings Thou hast endured from the instant of Thy conception, and especially during Thy Passion, as it was decreed and ordained from all eternity in the Divine plan. Remember, O Lord, that during the Last Supper with Thy disciples, having washed their feet, Thou gavest them Thy Most Precious Body and Blood, and while at the same time Thou didst sweetly console them, Thou didst foretell them Thy coming Passion. Remember the sadness and bitterness which Thou didst experience in Thy Soul as Thou Thyself bore witness saying: "My Soul is sorrowful even unto death." Remember all the fear, anguish and pain that Thou didst suffer in Thy delicate Body before the torment of the crucifixion, when, after having prayed three times, bathed in a sweat of blood, Thou wast betrayed by Judas, Thy disciple, arrested by the people of a nation Thou hadst chosen and elevated, accused by false witnesses, unjustly judged by three judges during the flower of Thy youth and during the solemn Paschal season. Remember that Thou wast despoiled of Thy garments and clothed in those of derision; that Thy Face and Eyes were veiled, that Thou wast buffeted, crowned with thorns, a reed placed in Thy Hands, that Thou was crushed with blows and overwhelmed with affronts and outrages. In memory of all these pains and sufferings which Thou didst endure before Thy Passion on the Cross, grant me before my death true contrition, a sincere and entire confession, worthy satisfaction and the remission of all my sins. Amen.

Second Prayer

Our Father - Hail Mary O Jesus! True liberty of angels, Paradise of delights, remember the horror and sadness which Thou didst endure when Thy enemies, like furious lions, surrounded Thee, and by thousands of insults, spits, blows, lacerations and other unheard-of-cruelties, tormented Thee at will. In consideration of these torments and insulting words, I beseech Thee, O my Savior, to deliver me from all my enemies, visible and invisible, and to bring me, under Thy protection, to the perfection of eternal salvation. Amen.

Third Prayer

Our Father - Hail Mary O Jesus! Creator of Heaven and earth whom nothing can encompass or limit, Thou Who dost enfold and hold all under Thy Loving power, remember the very bitter pain Thou didst suffer when the Jews nailed Thy Sacred Hands and Feet to the Cross by blow after blow with big blunt nails, and not finding Thee in a pitiable enough state to satisfy their rage, they enlarged Thy Wounds, and added pain to pain, and with indescribable cruelty stretched Thy Body on the Cross, pulled Thee from all sides, thus dislocating Thy Limbs. I beg of Thee, O Jesus, by the memory of this most Loving suffering of the Cross, to grant me the grace to fear Thee and to Love Thee. Amen.

Fourth Prayer

Our Father - Hail Mary O Jesus! Heavenly Physician, raised aloft on the Cross to heal our wounds with Thine, remember the bruises which Thou didst suffer and the weakness of all Thy Members which were distended to such a degree that never was there pain like unto Thine. From the crown of Thy Head to the Soles of Thy Feet there was not one spot on Thy Body that was not in torment, and yet, forgetting all Thy sufferings, Thou didst not cease to pray to Thy Heavenly Father for Thy enemies, saying: "Father forgive them for they know not what they do." Through this great Mercy, and in memory of this suffering, grant that the remembrance of Thy Most Bitter Passion may effect in us a perfect contrition and the remission of all our sins. Amen.

Fifth Prayer

Our Father - Hail Mary O Jesus! Mirror of eternal splendor, remember the sadness which Thou experienced, when contemplating in the light of Thy Divinity the predestination of those who would be saved by the merits of Thy Sacred Passion, Thou didst see at the same time, the great multitude of reprobates who would be damned for their sins, and Thou didst complain bitterly of those hopeless lost and unfortunate sinners. Through the abyss of compassion and pity, and especially through the goodness which Thou displayed to the good thief when Thou saidst to him: "This day, thou shalt be with Me in Paradise." I beg of Thee, O Sweet Jesus, that at the hour of my death, Thou wilt show me mercy. Amen.

Sixth Prayer

Our Father - Hail Mary O Jesus! Beloved and most desirable King, remember the grief Thou didst suffer, when naked and like a common criminal, Thou was fastened and raised on the Cross, when all Thy relatives and friends abandoned Thee, except Thy Beloved Mother, who remained close to Thee during Thy agony and whom Thou didst entrust to Thy faithful disciple when Thou saidst to Mary: "Woman, behold thy son!" and to Saint John: "Son, behold thy Mother!" I beg of Thee O my Savior, by the sword of sorrow which pierced the soul of Thy holy Mother, to have compassion on me in all my affliction and tribulations, both corporal and spiritual, and to assist me in all my trials, and especially at the hour of my death. Amen.

Seventh Prayer

Our Father - Hail Mary O Jesus! Inexhaustible Fountain of compassion, Who by a profound gesture of Love, said from the Cross: "I thirst!" suffered from the thirst for the salvation of the human race. I beg of Thee O my Savior, to inflame in our hearts the desire to tend toward perfection in all our acts; and to extinguish in us the concupiscence of the flesh and the ardor of worldly desires. Amen.

Eighth Prayer

Our Father - Hail Mary O Jesus! Sweetness of hearts, delight of the spirit, by the bitterness of the vinegar and gall which Thou didst taste on the Cross for Love of us, grant us the grace to receive worthily Thy Precious Body and Blood during our life and at the hour of our death, that they may serve as a remedy and consolation for our souls. Amen.

Ninth Prayer

Our Father - Hail Mary O Jesus! Royal virtue, joy of the mind, recall the pain Thou didst endure when plunged in an ocean of bitterness at the approach of death, insulted, outraged by the Jews, Thou didst cry out in a loud voice that Thou was abandoned by Thy Father, saying: "My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken me?" Through this anguish, I beg of Thee, O my Savior, not to abandon me in the terrors and pains of my death. Amen.

Tenth Prayer

Our Father - Hail Mary O Jesus! Who art the beginning and end of all things, life and virtue, remember that for our sakes Thou was plunged in an abyss of suffering from the soles of Thy Feet to the crown of Thy Head. In consideration of the enormity of Thy Wounds, teach me to keep, through pure love, Thy Commandments, whose way is wide and easy for those who love Thee. Amen.

Eleventh Prayer

Our Father - Hail Mary O Jesus! Deep abyss of mercy, I beg of Thee, in memory of Thy Wounds which penetrated to the very marrow of Thy Bones and to the depth of Thy Being, to draw me, a miserable sinner, overwhelmed by my offenses, away from sin and to hide me from Thy Face justly irritated against me, hide me in Thy Wounds, until Thy anger and just indignation shall have passed away. Amen.

Twelfth Prayer

Our Father - Hail Mary O Jesus! Mirror of Truth, symbol of unity, link of Charity, remember the multitude of wounds with which Thou was covered from head to foot, torn and reddened by the spilling of Thy adorable Blood. O Great and Universal Pain which Thou didst suffer in Thy virginal Flesh for Love of us! Sweetest Jesus! What is there that Thou couldst have done for us which Thou hast not done! May the fruit of Thy sufferings be renewed in my soul by the faithful remembrance of Thy Passion, and may Thy Love increase in my heart each day, until I see Thee in eternity, Thou Who art the treasury of every real good and every joy, which I beg Thee to grant me, O Sweetest Jesus, in Heaven. Amen.

Thirteenth Prayer

Our Father - Hail Mary O Jesus! Strong Lion, Immortal and Invincible King, remember the pain which Thou didst endure when all Thy strength, both moral and physical, was entirely exhausted, Thou didst bow Thy Head, saying: "It is consummated!" Through this anguish and grief, I beg of Thee Lord Jesus, to have mercy on me at the hour of my death when my mind will be greatly troubled and my soul will be in anguish. Amen.

Fourteenth Prayer

Our Father - Hail Mary O Jesus! Only Son of the Father, Splendor and figure of His Substance, remember the simple and humble recommendation Thou didst make of Thy Soul to Thy Eternal Father, saying: "Father, into Thy Hands I commend My Spirit!" And with Thy Body all torn, and Thy Heart Broken, and the bowels of Thy Mercy open to redeem us, Thou didst Expire. By this Precious Death, I beg of Thee O King of Saints, comfort me and help me to resist the devil, the flesh and the world, so that being dead to the world I may live for Thee alone. I beg of Thee at the hour of my death to receive me, a pilgrim and an exile returning to Thee. Amen.

Fifteenth Prayer

Our Father - Hail Mary O Jesus! True and fruitful Vine! Remember the abundant outpouring of Blood which Thou didst so generously shed from Thy Sacred Body as juice from grapes in a wine press. From Thy Side, pierced with a lance by a soldier, blood and water issued forth until there was not left in Thy Body a single drop, and finally, like a bundle of myrrh lifted to the top of the Cross Thy delicate Flesh was destroyed, the very Substance of Thy Body withered, and the Marrow of Thy Bones dried up. Through this bitter Passion and through the outpouring of Thy Precious Blood, I beg of Thee, O Sweet Jesus, to receive my soul when I am in my death agony. Amen.

Conclusion

O Sweet Jesus! Pierce my heart so that my tears of penitence and love will be my bread day and night; may I be converted entirely to Thee, may my heart be Thy perpetual habitation, may my conversation be pleasing to Thee, and may the end of my life be so praiseworthy that I may merit Heaven and there with Thy saints, praise Thee forever. Amen.

We are living in dark times (in and outside of the Church) which now more than ever requires you and me, ordinary men and women to fight with all our might for the salvation of souls and our own sanctity. Prayer is the foundation that grounds us as well as the wings that draw us close to God. It is the beginning. Pope St. Pius X's reach was limited by the technology of his day, but what about us? What if we could gather, inspire and call upon a 1,000,000 families to pray the rosary everyday?

If you have any prayers you'd like to request, or comments and/or suggestions - please email me at latinprayerpodcast@gmail.com. Know that if you are listening to this, I am praying for you. Please continue to pray with me and for me and my family.

Learn the Pater Noster Easily!03 Mar 202100:20:40

Salvete everyone!

This has been requested a few times and took a little planning to get recorded but here it is finally.

Pater Noster, qui es in caelis, sanctificetur nomen tuum. Adveniat regnum tuum. Fiat voluntas tua, sicut in caelo et in terra. Panem nostrum quotidianum da nobis hodie, et dimitte nobis debita nostra sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris. Et ne nos inducas in tentationem, sed libera nos a malo.

January 1st Plenary Indulgence - Veni Creator Spiritus (English/Latin)01 Jan 202100:10:41

Merry Christmas and a Very Happy New Year to you and yours!

On this 1st day of the year we have the gift of obtaining a plenary indulgence by publicly reciting the Veni Creator Spiritus!

A plenary indulgence is the full remission of temporal punishment due for sins which have already been forgiven. The indulgence is granted by the Catholic Church after the sinner has confessed and received absolution. Indulgences draw on the Treasury of Merit accumulated by Christ's superabundantly meritorious sacrifice on the cross and the virtues and penances of the saints. They are granted for specific good works and prayers.

To be capable of gaining an indulgence for oneself, it is required that one be baptized, not excommunicated, in the state of grace at least at the completion of the prescribed works, and a subject of the one granting the indulgence.

You can gain a Plenary Indulgence for yourself or for a deceased person. But not for another living person, they have to get it for themselves.

THE USUAL CONDITIONS:

Receive Holy Communion on the Feast Day.

Go to Confession (within 8 Days of the Feast Day).

Have no attachment to sin.

Pray for the Intentions of the Pope one Our Father, and one Hail Mary.

Come, Holy Ghost, Creator blest, and in our hearts take up Thy rest; come with Thy grace and heav’nly aid, To fill the hearts which Thou hast made.

O Comforter, to Thee we cry, Thou heav’nly gift of God most high, Thou Fount of life, and Fire of love, and sweet anointing from above.

O Finger of the hand divine, the sevenfold gifts of grace are thine; true promise of the Father thou, who dost the tongue with power endow.

Thy light to every sense impart, and shed thy love in every heart; thine own unfailing might supply to strengthen our infirmity.

Drive far away our ghostly foe, and thine abiding peace bestow; if thou be our preventing Guide, no evil can our steps betide.

Praise we the Father and the Son and Holy Spirit with them One; and may the Son on us bestow the gifts that from the Spirit flow. Amen.

V. Send forth Thy Spirit, and they shall be created. R. And Thou shalt renew the face of the earth.

Let us Pray: O God, Who didst instruct the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Ghost: give to us, in the same Spirit, to know what is right, and ever rejoice in His consolation. Through Jesus Christ, Thy Son, our Lord, Who with Thee livest and reignest in the unity of the same Holy Spirit, God. World without end. Amen.

Episode 47 - St. Andrew Novena (English)01 Dec 202000:07:00

The most cherished of all Advent devotions is The Saint Andrew Christmas Novena. Often called the "Christmas Novena" or the "Christmas Anticipation Prayer," it is prayed 15 times every day from the Feast of Saint Andrew the Apostle (November 30) until Christmas. This is no small undertaking however I hope this recording makes helps keep you on track till Christmas! I am searching to find a Latin translation and might just translate it myself

It is piously believed that whoever recites the St. Andrew Christmas novena prayer fifteen times each day from the feast of St. Andrew (November 30th) until Christmas Eve will obtain their requested favour.

Happy First Week of Advent!

Hail and blessed be the hour and moment in which the Son of God was born Of the most pure Virgin Mary, at midnight, in Bethlehem, in the piercing cold. In that hour vouchsafe, I beseech Thee, O my God, to hear my prayer and grant my desires through the merits of Our Savior Jesus Christ, and of His blessed Mother.

Amen

Episode 46 - Ancient Homily for Holy Saturday11 Apr 202000:06:19

As is my custom on Holy Saturday, after praying and meditating on this Homily, I decided to share it with you all - this reflection deeply moving. I cannot read it to my family without coming to tears.

God love you all & have a blessed Easter!

Ancient homily Holy Saturday - We present an ancient second century homily given on Holy Saturday by Bishop Melito of Sardis for reflection and prayer:

The Lord's descent into the underworld

Something strange is happening; there is a great silence on earth today, a great silence and stillness. The whole earth keeps silence because the King is asleep. The earth trembled and is still because God has fallen asleep in the flesh and he has raised up all who have slept ever since the world began. God has died in the flesh and hell trembles with fear.

He has gone to search for our first parent, as for a lost sheep. Greatly desiring to visit those who live in darkness and in the shadow of death, he has gone to free from sorrow the captives Adam and Eve, he who is both God and the son of Eve. The Lord approached them bearing the cross, the weapon that had won him the victory. At the sight of him Adam, the first man he had created, struck his breast in terror and cried out to everyone: “My Lord be with you all.” Christ answered him: “And with your spirit.” He took him by the hand and raised him up, saying: “Awake, O sleeper, and rise from the dead, and Christ will give you light.”

“I am your God, who for your sake have become your son. Out of love for you and for your descendants I now by my own authority command all who are held in bondage to come forth, all who are in darkness to be enlightened, all who are sleeping to arise. I order you, O sleeper, to awake. I did not create you to be held a prisoner in hell.

Rise from the dead, for I am the life of the dead. Rise up, work of my hands, you who were created in my image. Rise, let us leave this place, for you are in me and I am in you; together we form only one person and we cannot be separated. For your sake I, your God, became your son; I, the Lord, took the form of a slave; I, whose home is above the heavens, descended to the earth and beneath the earth. For your sake, for the sake of man, I became like a man without help, free among the dead. For the sake of you, who left a garden, I was betrayed to the Jews in a garden, and I was crucified in a garden.

See on my face the spittle I received in order to restore to you the life I once breathed into you. See there the marks of the blows I received in order to refashion your warped nature in my image. On my back see the marks of the scourging I endured to remove the burden of sin that weighs upon your back. See my hands, nailed firmly to a tree, for you who once wickedly stretched out your hand to a tree.

I slept on the cross and a sword pierced my side for you who slept in paradise and brought forth Eve from your side. My side has healed the pain in yours. My sleep will rouse you from your sleep in hell. The sword that pierced me has sheathed the sword that was turned against you.

Rise, let us leave this place. The enemy led you out of the earthly paradise. I will not restore you to that paradise, but I will enthrone you in heaven. I forbade you the tree that was only a symbol of life, but see, I who am life itself am now one with you. I appointed cherubim to guard you as slaves are guarded, but now I make them worship you as God. The throne formed by cherubim awaits you, its bearers swift and eager. The bridal chamber is adorned, the banquet is ready, the eternal dwelling places are prepared, the treasure houses of all good things lie open. The kingdom of heaven has been prepared for you from all eternity.”

Episode 45 - Pope Leo XIII's 3rd Encyclical on the Holy Rosary12 Mar 202000:15:29

QUOD AUCTORITATE ENCYCLICAL OF POPE LEO XIII  PROCLAIMING AN EXTRAORDINARY JUBILEE

Venerable Brethren, Health and Apostolic Benediction.

1. That which We, by the Apostolic authority, have more than once decreed, that an extraordinary year of Jubilee should be kept throughout the whole Christian world, and the treasures of heavenly gifts, the dispensation of which is in Our power, should be thrown open to the faithful-that with the favour of God We have determined to decree for the ensuing year. The advantages of this step will not escape you, Venerable Brethren, who are so familiar with the spirit of the age and the temper of the time, but there is a special reason now which makes Our decision seem more than usually opportune. In view of the fact that in Our recent Encyclical Letter We pointed out how important it is that the States should conform as closely as possible to truth and the Christian ideal, it will easily be understood how fitting it is that We should now use every effort to excite men, or to lead them back to the practice of Christian virtues. For a State is what the lives of the people make it: and just as the excellence of a ship or a house is dependent upon the good quality and the right adjustment of its component parts, so, unless the individual citizens lead good lives, the State cannot keep in the path of virtue, and without offending. Civil government and those things which constitute the public life of a country come into existence and perish by the act of men; and men almost always succeed in stamping the image of their opinions and their lives upon their public institutions. In order therefore that Our teaching may sink into men's minds, and what is the great thing, actually govern their daily lives, an attempt must be made to bring them to think and act like Christians, not less in public than in private.

2. And in this matter effort is the more needful because perils everywhere abound. The great virtues of our forefathers have in large measure disappeared; the most violent passions have claimed a freer indulgence; the madness of opinion which knows no restraint, or at least no effective restraint, every day extends further; of those whose principles are sound there are many who, through a misplaced timidity, are frightened, and have not the courage even to speak out their opinions boldly, far less to translate them into deeds; everywhere the worst examples are affecting public morals; wicked societies which We ourselves have denounced before now, skilled in all evil arts, are doing their best to lead the people astray, and as far as they are able, to withdraw them from God, their duty, and Christianity.

3. Amid these many and pressing evils, which are the more serious because they are already of long duration, nothing must be left undone by Us which can afford any hope of relief. With this purpose, and in this hope, We proclaim a sacred Jubilee to all those who have their salvation at heart, and need to be reminded and exhorted to raise their thoughts, now busied with worldly matters, to the contemplation of heavenly things. And this with a gain not merely to the individuals themselves, but to the whole future well-being of the commonwealth, because in proportion as individual citizens advance along the path of perfection, there is a corresponding increase in the general rectitude and probity, in the public life and morals of the nation.

4. But you will observe, Venerable Brethren, that success will largely depend upon your industry and zeal, as it will be needful to prepare the people properly and carefully if they are to reap the fruits which are to be placed before them. We commit it to your judgment and prudence to place this matter in the hands of priests whom you may select, that by discourses fitted to the capacity of the crowd they may instruct them, and above all exhort them to that penance which, according to St. Augustine, consists in "the daily chastisement of the good and the faithful followers of Christ in which we strike our breasts, saying forgive us our sins.'"(1) With good reason We mention here in the first place that part of penance which consists of the voluntary punishment of the body. You know the temper of the times - how many there are who love to live delicately and shrink from whatever requires manhood and generosity; who, when aliments come, discover in them sufficient reasons for no to beying the salutary laws of the Church, thinking the burden laid upon them more than they can bear, when they are told to abstain from certain kinds of food orto fast during a few days in the year. It is not to be wondered at if, weakened by these habits of indulgence, they gradually give themselves up body and soul to the more imperious passions. It is therefore necessary to recall to the paths of moderation those who have fallen or who are likely to fall through this sort of effeminacy. Therefore those who speak to the people should lay it down persistently and clearly that according not only to the law of the Gospel, but even to the dictates of natural reason, a man is bound to govern himself and keep his passions under strict control, and moreover, that sin cannot be expiated except by penance. That the virtue of which We have spoken may be durable, it will be prudent to put it in some sort under the safe guardand protection of a stable institution; you know well, venerable brothers, towhat We allude; We mean that you should continue each one in his own diocese to protect and propagate the Third Order, called the Secular Order, of the Franciscan Friars. To keep up the spirit of penance in the Christian multitude nothing is more effectual than the example and the grace of the Patriarch Francis of Assisi, who combined with the greatest innocence of life so much zeal for mortification that the image of Jesus Christ crucified was not less visible in his life and conduct than in the signs which were supernaturally impressed upon him. The laws of his Order, which We have modified for the times, are as light to bear as they are effectual for the practice of Christian virtue.

5. In the second place, as every hope of safety lies in the protection and succour of our Heavenly Father in the midst of so great private and public necessities, We would earnestly desire to see confidence united with the revival of an assiduous zeal in prayer. In every great crisis of Christendom, and every time the Church was afflicted by evils within or dangers without, our fore fathers, with their eyes lifted to Heaven in supplication, taught us how and when we should seek for the light of our souls, for the strength of virtue, andfor help suited to the need. For deeply engraved upon men's minds were these precepts of Jesus Christ: "Ask and it shall be given you;"(2) "We ought always to pray and not to faint."(3) And with this teaching the word of the Apostle corresponds: "Pray without ceasing;"(4) "I desire, therefore, first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all men."(5) Upon which subject St. John Chrysostom has left us this saying, not less true than ingenious, in the form of a comparison: "Even as man, who comes into the light of day naked and wanting all things, has been end owed by nature with hands to procure for himself all the necessaries of life; so in supernatural things, seeing that of himself he can do nothing, he has received from God the faculty of prayer, that he may use it wisely for the obtaining of all that is needful to his salvation."

6. From all this, Venerable Brethren, each one of you may gather how agreeable to Us and how commendable is the zeal with which at Our suggestion you have spread the devotion to the Most Holy Rosary, especially in these last years. Nor can We pass over the popular piety which has almost everywhere been excited by this method of prayer. Now you must watch with the greatest care that this devotion be practiced with even greater and greater fervour, and that it be persevered in without failing. And if We insist upon this exhortation, as We have already done several times, not one of you will be surprised, for you understand how important it is that this habit of the Rosary of Mary should flourish among Christians. And you are perfectly aware that this is a part and a beautiful form of that spirit of prayer of which we speak, and that it is at once admirably suited to our times, easy to practice, and fruitful in results. But as the first and the chief fruit of the Jubilee must be, as We have already pointed out, amendment of life and progress in virtue, We deem especially necessary the avoidance of that evil which We have not neglected to point out in Our past Encyclicals. We allude to those internal, and, as it were, domestic dissensions among some of ourselves; dissensions of which it is hardly possible to say how much they break or relax the bonds of charity, to the great detriment of souls. If We recall this to you once more, Venerable Brethren, who are the guardians of ecclesiastical discipline and of mutual charity, it is that We desire to see your watchfulness and your authority always directed to the prevention of so great an evil. By your warnings, your exhortations, your reproaches, urge all "to keep the unity of spirit in the bond of peace," induce the authors of the dissensions, if such there be, to return to their duty by the consideration which they should ever keep in mind that the only-begotten Son of God, even at the approach of His last torments, asked nothing more urgently of His Father than the mutual love of those who believed, or should believe, in Him,"that they may all be one, even as Thou, Father, art in Me, and I in Thee, that they also may be one in Us."(6)

7. Relying, therefore, on the mercy of the omnipotent God, and the authority of the Blessed Apostles St. Peter and St. Paul, and making use of that power of binding and loosing which our Lord has given to Us, though unworthy of it, We grant under the form of a General Jubilee a plenary indulgence to all the faithful of both sexes upon this condition and subject to this obligation, that during the coming year of 1886 they perform the things mentioned below.

8. The citizens and inhabitants of Rome must pay two visits to the Lateran, the Vatican, and the Liberian Basilicas, and pray there for some time to God according to Our intentions for the well-being and the exaltation of the Church, for the rooting out of all heresy, and for the conversion of all who are in error, and in accordance with Our intentions pour out prayers to God that concord may reign among Christian princes, and that peace and unity may be the lot of all the faithful. They must also fast for two days, only using the food usually allowed in times of penance, in addition to the forty days of Lent and other days set aside by the Church as fast days. They must also, after having properly confessed their sins, receive Holy Communion, and, in accordance with the advice of their confessor, give an alms, each according to his means, to the furthering of some work likely to promote the propagation and increase of the Catholic Church. Each may choose the object he prefers; but We think it well especially to name two, towards which assistance may be given with the greatest advantage; and of these each is an object which in many places is in need of help and aid, and fruitful in advantage, not less for the State than for the Church, We mean the Primary schools for boys and the Seminaries for the Clergy.

9. Those who reside outside Rome, in whatever part of the world they may live, must pay two visits at prescribed intervals to three churches to be appointed by you, Venerable Brethren, your Vicars or Officials, on your or their command, by those who have the charge of souls; or three visits if there are only two churches, or six visits if there is only one; and also must comply with all the conditions already laid down above. This indulgence may be applied by way of suffrage to the souls who have departed this life joined in charity with God. We give you power to reduce the number of the visits according to your judgment to certain churches in the case of chapters, congregations, as well secular as regular, communities, confraternities, universities, and colleges where the visits are made in procession.

10. Sailors and travellers may obtain the indulgence upon their return home, ortheir arrival at some fixed station, by visiting six times the principal church,or the parish church of the district, and complying with the other conditions which We have already laid down. In the case of regulars of either sex, and evenin the case of persons belonging to enclosed orders, and also in the case of all others, whether ecclesiastical or lay, who are prevented either because they arein prison, or through infirmity, or any other good reason, from fulfilling the above conditions, or some of them, the confessor has power to commute for other pious works, and also has power to dispense from Communion children who have not yet made their First Communion. Moreover, We grant to all and each of the faithful, both lay and ecclesiastic, secular and regular, of whatever order and institute, and even of those which ought to be specially named, that they should choose for the purpose of the Jubilee any approved confessor they like; nuns, novices, and other women living in the cloister may avail themselves of this power provided the confessor chosen is approved for nuns. To confessors up on this occasion, and while the time of this Jubilee lasts, We grant all the faculties which were granted by Our Letters Apostolic of February 15th, 1879, beginning with the words Pontifices maximi; always excepting the things which were excepted in those Letters.

11. Finally let all do their best to gain the graces of heaven during this time by a special devotion to the great Mother of God. For We wish this Jubilee to be placed under the patronage of the Most Holy Rosary of the Virgin; and with her assistance We are confident that there will be many whose souls, set free by the cleansing away of the stains of sin, will be renewed by faith and piety and justice, not only to the hope of eternal salvation, but also as an earnest of amore peaceful time.

12. As a pledge of heavenly graces and a witness to Our fatherly good will towards you, We give from the bottom of Our heart the Apostolic Benediction to you and your Clergy, and the whole people committed to your care and watchfulness.

Given in Rome, at St. Peter's, on the twenty-second day of December, in the year 1885, the eighth of Our Pontificate.

Episode 44 - The 15 Decade Rosary in Latin - Joyful, Sorrowful & Glorious10 Jan 202001:08:03

This has been a long time in the works. Thank you to all of you for your prayers & patience. Episode 39 - Anima Christi (Latin)31 Dec 201900:01:06

This well known Catholic prayer dates to the early fourteenth century and was possibly written by Pope John XXII, but its authorship remains uncertain. The prayer takes its name from its Latin incipit, meaning "Soul of Christ". The Anima Christi was popularly believed to have been composed by St. Ignatius of Loyola, as he puts it at the beginning of his Spiritual Exercises and often refers to it. However, it has been found in a number of prayer books printed during Ignatius' youth and is in manuscripts which were written a hundred years before his birth. In the library of Avignon there is preserved a prayer book of Cardinal Peter De Luxembourg, who died in 1387, which contains Anima Christi in practically the same form as we have it today.

This prayer was so well known and so popular at the time of Ignatius, that in the first edition of his Spiritual Exercises he merely mentions it, evidently supposing that the reader would know it. In later editions, it was printed in full. It was by assuming that everything in the book was written by St. Ignatius that it came to be looked upon as his composition.

Anima Christi, sanctifica me. Corpus Christi, salva me. Sanguis Christi, inebria me. Aqua lateris Christi, lava me. Passio Christi, conforta me. O bone Jesu, exaudi me. Intra tua vulnera absconde me. Ne permittas me separari a te. Ab hoste maligno defende me. In hora mortis meae voca me. Et jube me venire ad te, Ut cum Sanctis tuis laudem te, In saecula saeculorum. Amen

If you have any prayers you'd like to request, or comments and/or suggestions - please email me at dylandrego@me.com. Know that if you are listening to this, I am praying for you. Please continue to pray with me and for me and my family.

May everything you do be Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam.

Actus Adorationem (Latin & English)14 Nov 201900:02:38

Whether in Latin or English this prayer is an absolute must learn. It's simple and easy to teach. Traditionally it is said three times especially on a Thursday as an act of Adoration to our Blessed Lord in the most holy Sacrament of the Altar.

O Sacrament most holy, O Sacrament Divine, All praise and all thanksgiving be every moment Thine.

O Sacramentum sanctissimum, O Sacramentum divinum, omnis laus et gratiæ sint tibi in perpetuum.
