EP053: New Management Approach for Recreational Fisheries | Dr. Michelle Duval22 Jun 202200:55:19

In the latest episode of The Guide Post, Willy and Will sit down with Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council Member Dr. Michelle Duval to discuss the recently approved Harvest Control Rule, which will change the way managers set recreational measures for black sea bass, summer flounder, scup, and bluefish. Dr. Duval, who has an extensive background in fisheries ecology and recreational fisheries issues, describes what the traditional process looked like and how the approved approach will operate.

The concept of the Harvest Control Year, and efforts to get it implemented quickly, have generated a lot of buzz and controversy in recent months. We certainly had our concerns, and still have several that remain unaddressed—namely, will the Harvest Control Rule work as intended, or will it increase the risk of overfishing and unsustainably managed fisheries? Follow along to learn more about what exactly the Harvest Control Rule is and what it might mean for the management of these four critical species.

EP039: Viral Chesapeake Bay Net Video | Eyewitness Accounts 01 Mar 202200:41:27

If you have Instagram or Facebook and associate yourself with salty outdoorsmen, you have probably seen a video filmed on the Chesapeake Bay that has gone viral within the striped bass and fishing space. As these posts harbor a lot of polarizing dialogue surrounding what appeared to be a load of large, breeder striped bass trapped within a seine net pinned to a commercial vessel for "multiple days", we decided to reach out to the anglers who saw and reported the incident.

Brennan and Chris used sound judgment and honorable confidence to call in the situation to Maryland DNR and stopped by the podcast to provide an eyewitness account of the disturbing big-bass situation.

EP146: Cobia Addendum II - Get Involved27 Jun 202400:37:25

In Episode 146 of The Guidepost, ASGA’s Will Poston sits down with Emilie Franke of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission to discuss Draft Addendum II for Atlantic Cobia. Recreational data uncertainties, shifting distribution, and structural management deficiencies are some of these issues frustrating cobia management, and what Addendum II seeks to address. Cobia from Georgia through Rhode Island are managed by the ASMFC through Amendment 1, which utilizes a quota strategy to maintain the sustainability of the stock. However, because the fishery is overwhelmingly recreational, monitoring quotas and developing new management measures can be very challenging. The Marine Recreational Informational Program (MRIP) has its flaws, and recreational catch and effort of Atlantic cobia expose all the limitations of our data collection program, which is in part what Addendum II hopes to address.

Draft Addendum II considers new allocations schemes for the recreational sector, such as moving from a state-by-state scheme to regional or coastwide harvest targets, which would be better suited to utilize the recreational fishing data we have now. In addition, the addendum includes other alternatives which could give managers more tools to respond to new stock assessments and make better use of the available fisheries data. This document is open for public comment now until July 8th.
