| When a Hypothetical Story Isn’t Hypothetical After All | 21 Aug 2017 | 00:08:23 | |
Sometimes when I talk about abortion with strangers, it feels like I’ve already had that conversation before, because they’re making familiar statements. But the truth is, I haven’t had that conversation before, because I haven’t heard that statement from that person before. Even though some statements are very common, different people mean very different things by them. A recent conversation I had with a hotel shuttle driver named “Mark” reminded me that while I may have heard the same words before, I hadn’t heard his story before. I think there’s a lesson you can learn from this situation that will help you have better dialogues with pro-choice people. | Abortion Images: A Case for Disagreement without Division | 31 Jul 2017 | 00:14:26
Timothy Brahm reads an article that represents the one time we've gone public with our thoughts about one of the most divisive topics within the pro-life movement. Every single one of our staff has personally seen people change their minds because of graphic abortion images, and yet we don't put them on signs. | FULL COURSE PODCAST: Listener Mail - Questions About Confirmation Bias | 24 Jul 2017 | 00:51:03
Every other Tuesday we publish a new episode of the Equipped for Life Podcast, available to everyone who purchases our course, “Equipped for Life: A Fresh Approach to Conversations about Abortion.” Generally these podcast episodes won’t be available to the general public, but we plan on occasionally making exceptions, and we’ve decided to make this episode available to everybody. In this episode Josh and Tim Brahm talk about confirmation bias and why that’s a difficult thing to avoid during this political season. Some of the questions we respond to in this episode: - How hard should we work to balance our social media feeds so that we see both sides of multiple issues when we log into Facebook or Twitter? - Are there any pro-choice films that you recommend to anti-abortion thinkers? In addition, are there any pro-choice films you deem to be morally reprehensible and therefore undeserving of pro-life viewership?” The episode begins with some pre-show banter, which is common for this podcast. In this case the topic ends up directly tying with the main topic for the show. You can’t dialogue well about abortion or anything else unless you learn to listen well. It should be obvious to anyone that if you want to listen well you shouldn’t interrupt people when they’re in the middle of a sentence. Something much less obvious is that you shouldn’t interrupt people when they’re in the middle of an important thought. In November of 2017 the Holy Family Respect Life Committee, in conjunction with Charles County Right to Life, invited Josh Brahm and David Bereit to speak at their annual pro-life conference in Southern Maryland. After the keynote sessions, Josh and David did a panel discussion and Q&A, joined by Michele Hendrickson, Capital Area Regional Director for Students for Life of America and Heather Sells, CEO of the Catherine Foundation, a local Pregnancy Resource Center. The panel discussion was hosted by Ali Rak from the Southern Maryland Pro-Life Symposium. Apologies for occasional audio issues in the panel discussion. They used tabletop panel discussion mics and when Heather would turn her head away from the mic sometimes her mic sort of cuts out. Generally, these podcast episodes won’t be available to the general public, but we plan on releasing short clips from the episodes every Thursday, to give you a sense of what these podcasts are like. In this episode of the Equipped for Life Course Podcast, Rachel interviews Lori Navrodtzke, a Pregnancy Resource Center counselor and Justice For All volunteer, about how to dialogue with people about abortion if they’ve already had one. In this clip, Rachel and Lori discuss how we should proceed in the conversation if we ask someone if they have had a personal abortion experience and they say “no.” They also give some examples of how to let people know about post-abortive healing, even if they don’t feel like they need it at this time.
