02. How to Save Your Life (2011) - Dallas Willard02 Sep 202400:39:04

How to Save Your Life

September 12, 2011

When you think about the phrase “being saved,” most people think about saving their soul. But what about the rest of you? Dallas explains that salvation is for every aspect of our lives and helps us understand how to redeem our time and bring everything we do back into the kingdom of God.

 Definitions:

·      “Spiritual formation” is the process of shaping the individual so that they love God with all their heart, with all their soul, with all their mind, and with all their strength, and they love their neighbor as themselves.

·      “Salvation” is being caught up in the life that Jesus is now living on earth.

·      “Redemption” is to buy something back.

·      “Beauty” is goodness made present to the senses.

·      “Truth” is a reflection of reality, including beauty and goodness.

·      “Goodness” is all that nourishes and strengthens human life in a proper order.

01. Taking on the Mind of Christ (2003) - Dallas Willard26 Aug 202400:56:06

Following Christ: Taking on the Mind of Christ

January 1, 2003

"The Following Christ conference was an annual event hosted by InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. Dallas had the honor of speaking at the closing session of the conference that took place in Atlanta, GA, December 28, 2002 - January 1, 2003. He painted a beautiful picture of what it means to follow Christ, urging believers to embrace the mind of Christ as outlined in Philippians 2.

 Philippians 2:1-8
Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if any consolation of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility consider one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, as He already existed in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but emptied Himself by taking the form of a bond-servant and being born in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death: death on a cross.

03. Worship as the Fine Texture of Real Life (2008) - Dallas Willard09 Sep 202400:50:56

Worship as the Fine Texture of Real Life

January 25, 2008

At the 2008 Calvin College Symposium of Worship, Dallas spoke on “Worship as the Fine Texture of Real Life.” He explained what worship is and how it can become a part of everything we do.

Dallas read these two definitions of worship:

1.     "In worship we engage ourselves with, dwell upon, and express the supreme greatness, beauty and goodness of God – primarily through thought and devotion of our wills, but usually also with the aid of words, rituals and symbols, frequently in union with others."
 — Dallas Willard (The Spirit of the Disciplines)

2.     "Worship is admiration to the point of wonder and delight."
 — A.W. Tozer

08. Growing Together Until the Harvest (1983)14 Oct 202400:44:26

Presented at Harbor Church, Los Angeles, California
April 3, 1983

Scripture: Matthew 13:1-30 (especially 24-30), Matthew 13:47-53

In today’s episode, we see how “The Parable of the Wheat and the Tares” and “The Parable of the Net” illustrate that there are many differences in the kinds of people who find a place in the kingdom of God. This includes understanding that some people who are living IN the kingdom or not OF the kingdom. Being IN something is a much more superficial thing than being OF it. But God has said “whosoever will may come,” and it is His desire for us to grow together. So we need
to be careful to stay focused on Jesus and the best ways to help ourselves and be his disciples.

This is the fifth session of a 12-part series Dallas called “The Parabolic Teaching About Christ’s Kingdom by Christ Himself.” The series is the foundation of a new book available on October 15th called “The Scandal of the Kingdom.” The book offers an opportunity to dig more deeply into the parables of Jesus. April 17, 1983

Scripture:  Luke 15:11-32; Luke 7:36-50; Matthew 21:28-32

1.     The Parable of the Two Sons who said one thing but did another.

2.     The story of Zacchaeus

3.     The Parable of the Prodigal Son

4.     The story of the woman who washed Jesus’ feet at Simon’s house

09. The Vineyard and the Wicked Husbandmen (1983)21 Oct 202400:43:28

Parables #6. The Vineyard and the Wicked Husbandmen
Parable: The Parable of the Vineyard

Presented at Harbor Church, Los Angeles, California
April 10, 1983

 Scripture: Luke 20:1-47, Matthew 21:33-46

In Matthew 7:15-23, Jesus talks about false prophets and knowing a tree by its fruit.

The Parable of the Vineyard points out that Israel had developed leaders who led against God instead of for him, and shows what happens to those who lead (even with God’s power), but are not with God in their hearts. Dallas looks at the context of this parable, as Israel’s religious leaders were clinging desperately to their authority in opposition and fear of the unique authority Jesus had. Such battles for spiritual authority continue today. It is important to try to understand just where the failure of these men were so we might understand ourselves better and guard our own hearts, and pray for those who lead us in an effective way.

This is the sixth session of a 12-part series Dallas called “The Parabolic Teaching About Christ’s Kingdom by Christ Himself.” This series is the foundation of a new book published on October 15th called “The Scandal of the Kingdom.” The book offers an opportunity to dig more deeply into the parables of Jesus. April 24, 1983

Scripture: Matthew 24:42-51, Matthew 25:1-13, Luke 12:41-48

Today’s episode brings us to the point in Jesus’ ministry when he was beginning to prepare his disciples for three aspects of the future:

1.     Jesus’ upcoming crucifixion and resurrection,

2.     How things will be during Christ’s absence from earth

3.     How we should prepare ourselves and hold our hearts before him as we await Jesus’ return.

This is the eighth session of a 12-part series Dallas called “The Parabolic Teaching About Christ’s Kingdom by Christ Himself.” The main parables discussed are The Parable of the Evil Servant and the Parable of the Ten Virgins. You can dig deeper into Dallas’s teaching about these parables and the Parable of the Talents in chapter 7 of the book that is based on this parables series, The Scandal of the Kingdom.https://dwillard.org/resources/books/the-scandal-of-the-kingdom

Dallas mentioned the writing of G. Campbell Morgan in this session. We encourage you to look for Morgan’s books on the Parables and other New Testament topics.

12. The Unforgiving Servant (1983)11 Nov 202400:48:30

Session 9. The Forgiving Heart and the Kingdom of God

Parable: The Unforgiving Servant

Presented at Harbor Church, Los Angeles, California

May 1, 1983

Scripture: Matthew 18:15-35

This is the ninth session of a 12-part series Dallas called “The Parabolic Teaching About Christ’s Kingdom by Christ Himself,” and today’s focus is on the gift of forgiveness. Many of us have a hard time with forgiveness, and sometimes that’s because of misunderstandings about what it is and how we should approach it.

In this episode, Dallas clarifies what is and is not a part of what it means to forgive someone (i.e. it doesn’t mean you forget about it and your relationship becomes the same as before) and offers helpful advice about things we can do to help us practice forgiveness. He also shares his interpretation of Matthew 18:35 (So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.) and Matthew 6:12 (Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.).

If you’d like to learn more about how to make forgiveness a natural part of your life, visit our website and listen to the 3-hour workshop Dallas taught in 1996 called “From Forgiveness to Blessing.”  https://dwillard.org/resources/audio/from-forgiveness-to-blessing

13. The Folly of Possessions and Riches: The Rich Fool (1983)18 Nov 202400:48:06

The Folly of Possessions and Riches: The Rich Fool
Parable: The Rich Fool

Presented at Harbor Church, Los Angeles, California

May 15, 1983

Scripture: Luke 12:13-40

Today we’re studying the Parable of the Rich Fool. A fool is a person who misjudges means to ends and chooses the wrong end. The farmer in the Parable of the Rich Fool was a man who had chosen to let his soul rest in his wealth instead of in God.

In this parable and the story of what caused Jesus to tell it, we learn how to have a Kingdom mindset with our finances and other assets. Dallas helps us apply these concepts by inviting us to consider the question, “What is your life?”

John Wesley offered the following counsel on wealth management: “Get all you can. Save all you can. Give all you can.” Dallas recommends inserting “Use all you can” into Wesley’s instructions after “Save all you can.” Use what you have for the glory of God. It’s better to have wealth in the hands of Christ’s followers than anywhere else.

This is the tenth session of our 12-part series entitled “The Parabolic Teaching About Christ’s Kingdom by Christ Himself.” On the Sunday prior to teaching about the Parable of the Rich Fool, Dallas had taught a class based on The Parable of the Hours. We don’t have that recording, but where Dallas has taught it elsewhere, he used it to illustrate the upside-down kingdom in action through the way we do business and care for those less fortunate than us. That teaching is available along with more from Dallas about financial responsibility in the Kingdom of God in The Scandal of the Kingdom: https://dwillard.org/resources/books/the-scandal-of-the-kingdom

14. Persistence is the Prerequisite: The “Unprofitable” Servant, and The Widow and the Mean Judge (1983)25 Nov 202400:47:40

Persistence is the Prerequisite: The “Unprofitable” Servant, and The Widow and the Mean Judge

Parables: The Unprofitable Servant, The Persistent Widow, The Pharisee and the Tax Collector

Presented at Harbor Church, Los Angeles, California

May 22, 1983

Scripture: Luke 17:3-10; Luke 18:1-17

“Strive to enter at the straight gate. For straight is the gate, and narrow is the way that leadeth into life, and few there be that find it.” Matthew 7:13

One of the better-known quotes from Dallas Willard is, “Grace is not opposed to effort; it is opposed to earning.” In today’s episode, Dallas is teaching on the persistent effort that is required if we expect to grow in our faith. Dallas says, “Faith is a matter of knowing how to speak the creative word of God with God. That's faith. Faith is seeing things to be so, which are in the will and vision and purpose of God, so that you are joined with God in speaking the creative words.”

This is the eleventh session of a 12-part series Dallas called “The Parabolic Teaching About Christ’s Kingdom by Christ Himself.” This series is the foundation for Dallas’s book, The Scandal of the Kingdom. https://dwillard.org/resources/books/the-scandal-of-the-kingdom Join us next time as Dallas wraps up the series with the parable of the Good Samaritan.

Living Without Hurry and Worry in “Such a Time as This” – a Letter from the Roman Jail

Baylor University and Truitt Seminary Church Staff Retreat
Retreat Theme: For Such a Time as This
February 23-24, 2004

Philippians 4:6-8

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.

Overheads Used in this Session:

  1. What is a Discipline?
  2. The Prayer of Saint Patrick
  3. Leadership magazine “funny”
  4. Aspects of Me That I Am in Great Danger of Confusing
(Job, Ministry, Work and Life, in a circle diagram)

Finding the Kingdom of God Now, Through Jesus and His Words

Baylor University and Truitt Seminary Church Staff Retreat

Retreat Theme: For Such a Time as This

February 23-24, 2004

Overheads:

  1. Obedience is the organ of knowledge in the spiritual life.
  2. “If you then be risen with Christ, seek those things that are above where Christ sits on the right hand of the Father. Set your affections on things above, not on things on the earth, for you are dead, and your life is hid with Christ and God. When Christ who is our life shall appear with him, glorious.” Colossians 3:1-4 (slightly paraphrased)
  3. Does the gospel I preach have a natural tendency to produce disciples as distinguished from consumers of religious goods and services?
  4. The Great Commission:
“I have been given say over everything in heaven and on earth. So, as you go, make disciples of all kinds of people, gather them in trinitarian reality, and teach them in such a way that they do all things I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you every moment, until the job is done.” Matt. 28:18-20 (Willard paraphrase)
  5. Who is an Apprentice of Jesus?
As Jesus’ apprentice (disciple, student), I am learning from him how to lead my life in the Kingdom of God as he would lead my life if he were I.

The Good "Half-Breed" and the Full-Blooded Stinkers. The Neighborliness of the Kingdom.

Parable: The Good Samaritan

Presented at Harbor Church, Los Angeles, California

May 29, 1983

Scripture: Luke 10 :23-42

This is the final session of a 12-part series Dallas called “The Parabolic Teaching About Christ’s Kingdom by Christ Himself.” All the talks in this series, along with quite a bit of Dallas’s additional teaching about the parables of Jesus can be found in his book The Scandal of the Kingdom: How the Parables of Jesus Revolutionize Life with God. https://dwillard.org/resources/books/the-scandal-of-the-kingdom. The word “scandal” is in the title because of the way the religious leaders in Jesus’ day responded to him. As we’ve learned in this series, they thought Jesus’ behavior (eating with sinners!) and his teaching (saying all are welcome in the kingdom of heaven!) was scandalous.

If you’d like to explore some of the writing of G. Campbell Morgan that was so influential for Dallas in teaching this series, start here: https://amzn.to/3AW54AY

Learning How to Reliably Recognize the Voice of God in Your Soul

This is the fourth session from a 3-day conference hosted by African Enterprise with the theme “Hearing the Voice of God.”

Pietermaritzburg, South Africa

August 17, 1993

In today’s episode, Dallas is teaching about how we can learn to know God’s voice. There are three characteristics of God’s voice that we will learn to identify by experience: quality, spirit and content.

Dallas also refers back to this list of communication methods from the last session:

1.  Phenomenon plus voice;

2.  Supernatural messenger or angel;

3.  Dreams and visions;

4.  Audible voice;

5.  The human voice; and

6.  The "spirit of man," or the "still small voice."

26. The Kind of Person That God Speaks to in Fullness (1993)10 Mar 202500:58:41

The Kind of Person That God Speaks to in Fullness

This is the sixth session from a 3-day conference hosted by African Enterprise with the theme “Hearing the Voice of God.”

Pietermaritzburg, South Africa

August 17, 1993

The kind of person that God speaks to in fullness is the kind of person that the word of God flows into, overruns, overwhelms, moves through and becomes a social and historical reality where they are.

You’ll see this in:

1. People whose belief in the substance and power of God’s word opens them up like a channel.

2. Disciples of Jesus who have learned to work with the power and authority of the word.

3. Those who live with God’s word so richly that it becomes a reality that is working in its own right.

Some of the realities of God’s word that are touched on in this episode are explained more deeply in session three of Dallas’s series, “The Parabolic Teaching About Christ’s Kingdom by Christ Himself.”

25. Does God Speak Today? : Facing the Issues (1993)03 Mar 202501:12:30

Does God Speak Today? : Facing the Issues

This is the fifth session from a 3-day conference hosted by African Enterprise with the theme “Hearing the Voice of God.”

Pietermaritzburg, South Africa

August 17, 1993

This episode focuses on four general assumptions that keep people from entering into a life of conversation with God:

  1. God would not communicate with run-of-the-mill human beings by surrounding them with His presence and speaking to them.
  2. God does not communicate with individuals directly.
  3. God cannot communicate with human beings.
  4. God should not communicate with individuals.

For Further Study:

28. Christ’s Community Power in Holiness Is for Now (1993) 24 Mar 202501:14:09

Christ’s Community Power in Holiness Is for Now

This is the closing session of a 3-day conference hosted by African Enterprise with the theme “Hearing the Voice of God.”
Pietermaritzburg, South Africa
August 18, 1993

Now that we’ve learned to hear God’s voice, Dallas brings us a vision of hope, abundance, and purpose that emphasizes how a hearing God life and a hearing God church can be a light to the nations. You’ll hear many of the reasons why Dallas began calling the church “the hope of the world.”

29. Doing What Jesus Did, Part 1: The Vision (2002)31 Mar 202501:58:30

Doing What Jesus Did, Part 1 (The Vision)
Conference Theme: “Doing What Jesus Did.”

This is the first of two teaching sessions presented at the Vineyard Church of Columbus, Ohio.
November 16, 2002

In this episode, Dallas presents a compelling vision of who Jesus is, opening with a study of Philippians 2:5-11:

Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

There are two versions on our site, and we’re linking to “the Director’s Cut” because it includes more detail about what was happening in the spiritual battle between Jesus and Satan.

2.      Dallas always encouraged everyone NOT to get wrapped up in atonement theories, but if you’re interested in more of Dallas’s thoughts about the primary strengths and weaknesses of the three most prominent atonement theories, see Getting the Elephant out of the Sanctuary on Conversatio.org. 34. The Complexity, Components and Order of Character and Personality (2010)05 May 202501:50:54

Kern Family Foundation Pastors Conference
Theme: Character Formation

July 6-7, 2010

In session two of this 4-part 2010 series, Dallas emphasizes the centrality of knowledge to the Christian life. The historical drive against this view of Christianity is part of a battle for authority over public life. We have allowed our beliefs to be treated as “just faith” and need to reclaim the importance of the knowledge of reality that is contained in the teachings of Scripture. This is where we find the best answers to the Four Great Questions. The answer to the fourth question (how to become a good person, leads into a discussion of the makeup of the human personality and where our actions come from).

33. The Calling and Resources of the Pastor - The Gospel and Character (2010)28 Apr 202501:35:18

The Calling and Resources of the Pastor - The Gospel and Character

Kern Family Foundation Pastors Conference

Theme: Character Formation

July 6-7, 2010

Dallas defines character as acquired essence. “It is your identity as shaped by your experiences, and especially your choices, and interaction with other people.”

The first session in this 4-part series will give us a good understanding of what character is and how it is affected by our beliefs about the essential questions that shape human life. Dallas points out that the Great Commission (Mt. 28:18-20) includes character formation: that’s what we’re doing when we make disciples and teach them to do everything Jesus said.

How Our Hearts and Lives are Broken and the Promise of Healing

Session #1 of Healing the Heart and Life by Walking with Jesus Christ Daily

Valley Vineyard Christian Fellowship, Reseda, CA

September 23, 2003

This is the first of six studies in how patient apprenticeship to Jesus leads us into the fullness of life for which God made us. Dallas presents how our hearts and lives are broken alongside the promise of healing. There are things that will change us and heal us, but healing is active, not passive, and there are things we need to do.

Presentation Slides: https://dwillard.s3.amazonaws.com/Healing-the-Heart-and-Life-1.pdf

The song Dallas said he’d like to sing every night of the series is “Change Me on the Inside” by Brian Doerksen.

Church Activities Organized around Character Development – Really!

Kern Family Foundation Pastors Conference

Theme: Character Formation

July 6-7, 2010

This is the final session of a 4-part series on character formation. Reflecting back on the Great Commission and implementing the VIM model, Dallas coaches us in the ways we can realign our church activities around the vision, intention, and means of character formation in Christian community. Dallas offers advice to his audience of young pastors that is important for all of us in looking at how we approach our job, our ministry, our work (which is different from our job or ministry) and our own life.

43. What Matters to Me and Why: Realism (2003)04 Aug 202500:46:44

What Matters to Me and Why: Realism

January 15, 2003

University of Southern California

This was Dallas’s contribution to a series of lunchtime talks hosted by USC’s Office of Religious Life. The theme for the series was “What Matters to Me and Why.”

Explanations of Terms:

Philosophy:  “I like to describe philosophy as the attempt to understand by rational means the necessary structure of the world in which we live.”

Realism:  “Realism means that all of those things that you apprehend and perceive really do exist, are right where you experienced them, and they would be there if you didn't see them.”

For Further Study:

The Making of the Modern University: Intellectual Transformation and the Marginalization of Morality, is the book by Julie Reuben that Dallas recommended.

Naturalism’s Incapacity to Capture the Good Will” is the paper Dallas wrote about the idea that a purely physical entity would not be capable of goodwill.

The poem Dallas read is “The Truly Great,” by Stephen Spender.
