Colleen McGowan is the Academic Industry Coordinator for the Joint BME Department at UNC Chapel Hill and NC State University.  Her role consists of advising undergraduate biomedical engineering students and assisting them with internship & job applications, organizing networking and educational opportunities as well as developing industry relationships for the benefit of students.  Prior to BME, Colleen worked as a Strategy & Operations Consultant with Deloitte before and after earning her MBA from Duke University, and spent several years at home with her children.  Colleen also recently completed seven years of board service with the Me Fine Foundation, serving as the non-profit's Board Chair in 2020 and 2021.  Outside of her professional life, Colleen can be found coaching volleyball, playing tennis or watching her daughters play their own sports.

Colleen joins the show to share her insights gained from advising BME students on finding and getting a job.

Lucy Herrero's Bio:

After earning my bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, I entered the regenerative medicine world to fulfill my purpose of helping others through my career. I strive to serve with excellence as I collaborate in the optimization and operation of the LUNA200 platform at Humacyte. In addition to my primary job functions, I was recently recognized for leading and implementing a novel sitewide alarm management procedure, as well as developing program in Matlab for the quality control of raw materials. One of my favorite achievements is publishing an article at the Human Movement Science Journal as a primary author in 2020. Currently, my goal is to build expertise in tech transfer and knowledge management. Outside of work you can find me hiking with my dog or reading fantasy novels.

Dr. Aileen Huang-Saad is an Associate Professor of Bioengineering at Northeastern University and the Director of Life Sciences and Engineering Programs at The Roux Institute (Portland, Maine).  She is Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Springer’s Biomedical Engineering Education, Past Division Chair for the American Society of Engineering Education’s Biomedical Engineering Division, and a member of the National Academy of Science Roundtable on Systemic Change in Undergraduate STEM Education.  She also serves on the Maine State Workforce Board.  Dr. Huang-Saad’s current research areas are entrepreneurship, innovation, and transforming higher education.  She received her PhD from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and an MBA from University of Michigan Ross School of Business.

13 - LEAN Six Sigma with Kevin Grayson14 Oct 202200:40:44

Kevin Grayson provides an introduction to LEAN Six Sigma, and subsequent tools and problem solving structures such as: DMAIC, DMADV, the 8 wastes (DOWNTIME), 5S, and value stream mapping.

Kevin Grayson is the assistant director of technology management at NC State Industry Expansion Solutions (IES). He provides strategic coaching and training in areas such as competitiveness review, business strategy development, new product introduction, innovation, advanced manufacturing methods, performance excellence and market growth. Kevin also supports other areas of IES including quality management systems and Six Sigma instruction. Kevin is an adjunct instructor in the Biomedical Engineering department where he teaches DFSS and certifies senior design projects. Kevin is also a Baldrige Examiner and AHCA Master Examiner and serves on the TNCPE Board of Directors. Kevin has been an AHCA master examiner for the AHCA/NCAL program since 2016.

Kevin is a frequent speaker at conferences and professional meetings, typically speaking on subjects such as innovation, performance excellence or Six Sigma. Kevin has B.S. degrees in both electrical engineering and economics from NC State University, an MBA from Brenau University and an M.S. in electrical engineering from UNC-Charlotte. Kevin is certified as a Certified Six Sigma Black Belt and Master Black Belt (MBB).

Cervu is an early-stage venture developing an intervaginal device to help cancer survivors with dyspareunia perform pelvic floor physical therapy at home. Other notable experiences include co-founding Gilero, starting nonprofit trade association NCMD, serving as business advisor for the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation's "Coulter College," Director for Duke NeuroInnovations, Coach for Industrial Design Firm Trig, and developing the college course Real Social Change. Andrew joins the show to talk about how he developed the senior design capstone course at UNC and NC State, and one of the first of its kind. He shares his goals for the capstone, the structure, and some stories along the way.

While Travis chose to continue to pursue his PhD, Taylor switched out of the program and got his Master's in Biomedical Engineering. Before entering his PhD program, he got his Bachelor's in Chemical Engineering at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.  Taylor Gabaldon is now a Design Engineer at Gilero. Brian Kim was the first guest of the BME Grad podcast. He is a 2019 graduate of the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering at UNC and NC State and ***spoiler alert*** he is going to be the new co-host for season 2!

Kristy Reed and Lydia Ashburn are both Venture for America (VFA) Fellows that graduated from the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering at UNC and NC State in 2019.  The Venture for America program is a 2-year fellowship for recent college grads that want to gain entrepreneurial experience. Fellows have the opportunity to work in a variety of roles/environments that provide entrepreneurial exposure, such as startups, SMBs, the innovation branch of larger companies, and VC firms. Plus - when Fellows want to start their own company, VFA provides resources to help them achieve their goals. The mission of the VFA program is to stimulate economic development in American cities by empowering and supporting VFA Fellows.  Through the VFA program matching process, Kristy became a Production Engineer for Infinite Biomedical Technologies (a startup), and Lydia, a Senior Operations Analyst for Total Access Urgent Care (a SMB in the growth phase). On this episode, Kristy and Lydia talk about the VFA program, and their roles, companies, day-to-day work, and impact.
