| Episode 6: Create Your Singing Team | 05 Feb 2017 | 00:35:53 | |
Today’s Studio Class assignment: create a singing team.
Gertrude Stein, during her salon years in Paris, cultivated a entourage of thought leaders. She was inspired by them, encouraged by them, and motivated by them. She may not have thought of them as her team. But, those are exactly the kind of relationships we’re talking about when I encourage you to create your own singing team.
The impact of peers on productivity and decision-making has been studied in diverse range of settings, from workplace productivity to migration decisions. Conceptually, the peer group can affect the individual in various ways, including creating positive external influences and allowing the individuals to take advantage of creating products or services within their community. These benefits are also present in the production of music: musicians can learn from observing one another and sharing performance slots can increase exposure.

| Episode 5: The Audition is Never Over! | 29 Jan 2017 | 00:26:55 | |
Charisma and confidence create allure. It is the sense of being drawn to another person. Allure isn’t solely based on exquisite features or a superior IQ. Those both help of course – no one is going to deny that Jonas Kaufman’s good looks make him more enticing. A true diva has “it”. And, YOU are going to actively cultivate it. Watch out world: no more invisible diva.
Your studio class challenge for today is to Tune-Up Your Charisma

| Episode 4: Audition Like You Mean It! | 22 Jan 2017 | 00:24:57 | |
The most sublime comment I have ever heard from an audition panel was, “Wow. She really came to play…” Simply put, the audition is the best of your preparation actualized. The better the preparation – the better the audition. It is in your best interest to do as many auditions as possible to not only ‘up your averages‘ but to hone your skills in this specific craft. Before you go slogging through auditions willy-nilly, take this challenge to help make more of your auditions successful.
Your Studio Class challenge today is to take that room by storm and audition like you mean it!

“Have an opinion; have many opinions, and bring them to the table. Nothing is deadlier than music managed rather than lived, performance designed not to offend. Avoid asking for permission in the moment of performance. Sometimes I feel like auditioners are painting themselves white, like apartments that could be rented by anyone. Believe that we truly want to know who you are.” - Kathleen Kelly and Laura Canning

| Episode 3: Take the Leap! | 15 Jan 2017 | 00:24:57 | |
29 Days to Diva and this Studio Class podcast are all about encouraging you to take control of your career and be proactive. If there is something that you have been waiting to do or have been procrastinating, now is the time to carpe the freakin’ diem. Feeling divalicious, yet? Fantastic. So, our challenge for today, even though it isn’t a leap year, is to metaphorically take the leap.

| Episode 2: Wobble & Be Brave | 08 Jan 2017 | 00:15:34 | |
The avoidance of what we fear, however, is exactly the same. Human beings fear rejection. Biologically wired with a longing to belong, we fear being seen in a critical way. We will actively avoid situations in which we feel the potential to be rejected.
Not singers, though. No, no, musicians pursue those opportunities. Divas put themselves out on a limb constantly. They open themselves up to feedback and constructive criticism from teachers, coaches, mentors, adjudicators, and audiences. They understand they will hear “no” more often than “yes.” But, it’s that dogged persistence in the face of rejection that makes the “yes” so much sweeter.

| Episode 1: What's a Diva Audit? | 01 Jan 2017 | 00:22:23 | |
It is the first day of January and you may be realizing that things are often easier said than done. In that first blush of 2016, many of us made those hastily scribbled lists of things that we would certainly accomplish this time around. Now, you may, or may not, have stuck to your New Years’ resolutions like a tenor to a mirror but something tells me that while the gym is getting a little more crowded - you haven’t been spending quite as much time in your practice room as you thought at the beginning of last year..
With that in mind, I’m starting Studio Class. We certainly support taking care of all of your resolutions, but together we’ll be focusing on your arts-career related goals.

| Episode 98: Masterclass - Whitney George | 15 May 2023 | 01:02:48 | |
Whitney George’s music traverses the affective terrain between tragedy and ecstasy, fragility and strength, bringing together romantically delicate intimacy and the spectacular darkness of the macabre. Haunted by ghosts and/of love, George’s operas, staged multimedia works, and chamber music coloristically explore the mysteries of irrationality, nightmare, and memory, sonically seeking lost objects and hidden subjects. Given George’s theatrical inclinations and preoccupation with the tragic, she has turned again and again to opera as both a composer and conductor. Recently, George has been awarded a number of operatic commissions, premieres, and recognition: in 2017; the Elebash Award for her orchestration of Gideon’s opera Fortunato, which premiered under George’s baton in May 2019. In the same year; the commission of the two-act opera Princess Maleine by dell'Arte and the video opera Julie by New Camerata which was publicly released in 2020. This 2023 season, Fresh Squeezed commissions Fizz & Ginger, an immersive jazz experience, and the second operatic endeavor with libretitst Bea Goodwin. George is the artistic director and conductor of The Curiosity Cabinet, a chamber orchestra formed in 2009. She holds degrees from the California Institute of the Arts (2008), Brooklyn College (2010), and the CUNY Graduate Center (2021).

| Episode 94: Masterclass - Carrie Hennessey | 16 Jan 2023 | 01:12:19 | |
Carrie Hennessey is a wayfinder through the deep, spiritual and technical discoveries of the voice.
Early success in the Metropolitan Opera Auditions led to high expectations, but singing after trauma in her early 20s dismantled the ease in her voice and presence. A top artistic mentor once reviewed, ‘This is not the same singer I heard 2 years ago. Go back home’, and a famous singer/coach exclaimed, ‘If you’d just sing like Renata Tebaldi…’ Hennessey left, losing her identity and voice.
Ms. Hennessey has since found her true voice and created a wildly unique and energized career path in theater, opera, symphony work, recital, and education, wearing with pride the hats of trauma-informed teacher and facilitator, producer, singer, actor, innovator and writer.
She is known for her soaring voice and richly nuanced characters onstage, and has sung all over the world. Notable highlights include debuting as Kát’á in Kát’á Kabanová at the Cal Shakes Amphitheater, As Blanche Du Bois in Previn’s A Streetcar Named Desire. Carrie captivated audiences in an immersive production of The Stronger and as Elle in La Voix Humaine in NYC. Her bold and nuanced interpretation of Strauss’ Vier Letzte Lieder resonated among the redwood trees with Music in the Mountains Orchestra. She then channeled the physical comedy of Carol Burnett and fearless vocalism and sense of humor of Beverly Sills in the world premiere ballet by Darrell Grand Moultrie “On the Rocks, Please!”
Carrie lights a fire in those around her - teaching music education through lectures, workshops, Master Classes, and is joyfully dedicated to guiding all around her to find their true authentic voice in the world. Currently, Carrie is developing her one woman show about her life in singing, quitting for 12 years post trauma and creating from nothing a versatile and vibrant career steeped in authenticity.

“So asking about logistics and style really help you know whether this is the right situation or if you’re just going to be studying with someone who might be fantastic at what they do… but the ‘what they do’ is not the right thing for you. And, vice verse. You’re not going to be a great student in their studio if you’re expecting different things but you haven’t communicated about what those expectations are. This is an important time to communicate together clearly and effectively about ‘what are our shared expectations?’”
