All our culture sees birth as a means to an end. What if we could deconstruct those ideas and replace them with Biblical truth. What decisions would we make? What feelings would we have? What impact would it have on our family, our community, our world?

I love a good birth story and this one is so sweet! If I had a quarter for anytime I heard a first time mom say she’s going to birth at a birth center or hospital for the first one “just in case.” There is no “test run” in your childbaring years. Every birth is so different and deserving of love, care and respect. Each birth is different and each birth matters. My “test run” birth with my first baby which ended in a c-section, obviously set me up with a deficit in future births.  And for 30% of women birthing in a hospital it’s also setting them up with a deficit as well. I’m seeing a movement of first time moms, like my guest today, make empowered and faithfilled decisions to birth at home and it makes me so excited! You are apart of the movement to make homebirth the FIRST option in our country! Changing cultural norms takes time but it starts with you and your family.

I have another homebirth story for you today! Samara chose to have a homebirth after experiencing 2 hospital births that weren’t exactly what she was looking for. She had a deep desire to homebirth and through a turn of events she pursued that option with her third. 

Samara is a stay at home mama to three little ones, a 5 year old girl, a 3 year old boy, and a 10 month old boy.  She loves to live a naturally minded life, from using toxin free products, to eating clean, organic whole foods. She does cloth diapering and EC, loves to baby wear, and chooses barefoot friendly shoes and natural fiber clothing.  She likes to start her days focusing on God, and having quiet time in His Word.  And both homeschooling and home birthing are important to her.

Does God promise things anymore? Well I would submit to you that I believe God is always speaking. Somewhere deep in your heart do you know or have you always known that homebirth is what you want? If you’re a first time mom you have probably asked or will ask “but how will I know when I’m in labor.” That’s such a good question but I also think it may not be as important to answer as you think it is. For my last 3 births I have experienced prodromal labor which feels like early labor and it lasts for 2-3 weeks before I actually end up having a baby. This has taught me a few things… I’m excited to share with you today what my exact routine is for when I go into labor and the questions I ask myself so I’m prepared for what’s ahead. Early labor is my absolute favorite and I think that I can attribute it to this routine. This is also what I would tell all of my doula clients to do.

One thing I do know is that the Lord uses all things for good, even traumatic birth experiences. There was a time I suffered with PPD and PTSD because of the unwanted and dare I say unnecessary c-section. 8 years ago tomorrow my first born was brought into the world into strangers hands and bright lights.

Marisa is a mom to 4, birth doula and stellar story teller! She came on the show today to share her 3 hospital birth stories which included a NICU stay, nerve damage from an epidural and an induction.
