This is the last episode of Women on the Road, but by no means the end of our community. In fact, we are incredibly excited and honored that Noami Grevemberg and her team at Diversify Vanlife will be helping to evolve the podcast you hear on this channel moving forward, with a total reboot taking place in October under a new name, Nomads at the Intersections. In this finale episode, Noami and Laura talk about what this transition means to them, as well as how we hope to see you take part in where we’re going next. Resources From This Episode:

| What We Carry in the Passenger Seat: Kathy Karlo | 11 Sep 2020 | 00:46:11 | |
For some of us, what got us in the car in the first place are the things we’re running from-- but no matter how many miles we drive, those things end up in the passenger seat, along for the ride with us. Kathy Karlo, a climber, writer, Director of No Man’s Land Film Festival, and host and creator of the For the Love of Climbing podcast, is someone who knows the contents of her passenger seat well-- both literally and figuratively. And she uses the weight of what she carries to build something bigger than herself. Resources From This Episode:

| The Right Fit: Kathleen Morton | 30 Sep 2017 | 00:27:17 | |
Whether it’s your vehicle, where you take it, or who’s in it-- being on the road sometimes means finding the right fit. And it’s not always so straightforward (in fact sometimes it’s downright messy). Sometimes looking for the right fit is an uncomfortable process and creates times of transition from one thing to the next, and when you live among an ever-changing landscape on top of that it’s important to have something consistent to lean on. Fortunately, Kathleen Morton of Tiny House Tiny Footprint knows all about the way community can play a crucial role of support, friendship, stability, and joy in this mobile lifestyle, especially during times of change. Also in this episode: what happens at a Vanlife Gathering, why the Pacific Northwest is a great place for camper life, and a short list of things Kathleen loves about vintage vehicles. | Navigating Romance | 15 Sep 2017 | 00:35:23
There’s a lot to traveling on the road with a romantic partner that is hard to explain with a social media post-- things like navigating tight living quarters, the special type of intimacy that comes with keeping a similar sleep schedule and buying all of the same groceries, and the behavioral change that happens when you know that there’s nowhere to retreat in the heat of a disagreement. It’s for this reason that Laura spends this episode bringing us all a little closer to some of the realities of traveling with a significant other by taking a peek into the lives of three different couples living on the road through the females within them: Katie Larsen, Juliana Linder, and Marisa and Vanessa Roaman. Tune in for stories on what to do if your partner is an early bird, how getting space from your partner is really a form of intimacy in itself, and that couples who clean together, stay together. Roads are full of twists and turns. So is the life you live on it. What happens when you come up against the inevitable challenges of living from one place to the next? And how do you come out better for it? Alex Ulmke of A Girl And Her Van knows all about the ups and downs of life on the road. | An Integrated Life: Noël Russell | 22 Jul 2017 | 00:29:56
What if living on the road full time doesn't work for your lifestyle? What if you love your day job? Laura talks with Noël Russell about striking the right balance for home in Oakland and away in her Sprinter Van. Two months into her trip, our host Laura Borichevsky reflects on what living part-time in her van was like while she worked full-time in the Pacific Northwest. Learning to balance a full-time career and the outdoors wasn’t always the easiest, but it’s one a lot of adventurers out there seem to navigate. Noël Russell is the perfect person to talk to about striking the right balance in work and travel. Monday through Friday she supports homeless youth services in San Francisco, and every weekend seems to be jam-packed with exploring in her Sprinter van with her husband and two dogs. For her, it’s all integrated. Noël’s passion and thoughtful take on life is inspiring and rooted in her values, ultimately showing weekend warriors, camper lovers, and wanderlusters alike that integrating work and travel is something you can thrive in. | What We Wish We Knew Before Hitting the Road | 08 Jul 2017 | 00:33:12
Host Laura Borichevsky shares her backstory - which includes a bit of trepidation about setting off on the road in her Ford Transit van full time. So she turns to some current and former travelers to get their advice for life on 4 wheels. Laura asks the question: What do you wish you knew before hitting the road? Since Laura doesn't have a time machine, talking with Laura Patton of Mobile Roamers and Gale Straub (host & founder of She Explores) is the next best thing. We also get to hear voice submissions answering the question from women who've lived the lifestyle first hand: Juliana Linder of @homesweetvan, Alexandra Ulmke of @agirlandhervan, Emily King of @wheresmyofficenow, Morgan Brown, Emelia Wint, and Ariel Ferree of We the Wildflowers. If you're curious about making the leap to full time travel, love taking long road trips on the weekends, or just want to meet some adventurous women - this episode is for you. | White Women of #Vanlife, We Need to Talk | 12 Jun 2020 | 00:59:07
The truth is this: as white women on the road, we’ve taken up a lot of space within the #vanlife movement. And it’s long past time to unpack how white women’s presence in popular road travel negatively impacts the Black traveler community. So in this episode, we spend some dedicated time addressing topics related to antiracism within the modern van life movement, why it’s been so tough to see positive change in this community, white women travelers’ collective role in all of this, and how to develop the practice of lifelong learning when it comes to antiracism work. NOTE: We wanted to recognize that, in addition to the update at the top of this episode we recorded to address some community feedback regarding the topic of assimilation, we also want to call out thanks to another incredible community member that when we discuss classism (vehicle and event ticket affordability being two examples) in this episode alongside racism, we are perpetuating the limiting and harmful narrative that folks in BIPOC communities are in lower socioeconomic brackets. Furthermore, this action is an example of a microaggression, and something we apologize for and take seriously. We are linking an additional resource here to underline why linking classism and racism is problematic so you can continue to learn alongside us. To our listeners: please listen critically. | Expect the Unexpected: Alexandra Keeling | 05 Jun 2020 | 00:40:06
Road travel can take many forms. And Alexandra Keeling knows this better than most-- because she's done a lot of them. From RV life, to towing a small trailer, to sleeping out of the back of a car, Alex's journeys on the road so far have shown that no matter how you travel, it all counts. Because regardless of your travel style or what you're hitting the road with, everyone is susceptible to unexpected surprises and challenges. Alex knows this part better than most, too-- but that’s her story to tell in this episode. Resources From This Episode:

| Navigating Responsible Travel During COVID-19 | 29 May 2020 | 00:54:53 | |
Can we hit the road responsibly during a pandemic? As someone planning to car camp or take a drive into the wilderness, you might not feel like you alone could make a huge impact on this pandemic-- but the reality is that travel can lead to transmission-- which means that travelers have the capacity to create an immense effect on the trajectory of viral spread. The good news is that we’re not here to make you feel guilty. We know you want to travel (we do too!), but more importantly: we want you to be knowledgeable and prepared, whether you’re planning to get out there soon, or hoping to sometime later in 2020. In this episode, we’re aiming to help in that process by providing you with questions, tips, and tools to make your own, best decisions at the time. We look at information through the eyes of women who love to travel and also hold public health as a top priority: Seattle-based nurse and overlander Emily Scott, travel nurse Em Cheng, and founder of the Outdoor Advocacy Project, Katie Boué. So tune in and get ready to be honest with yourself when it comes to responsible travel. Because the safer we are collectively, the more we can actually go out and do. Featured in this episode:

| My Mom’s 3,000 Mile Drive: Jackie Hughes | 08 May 2020 | 00:34:26 | |
This episode honors the mom figures in our lives who inspire or encourage dreams of road travel by paying tribute to one mom in particular: our host Laura Borichevsky’s mom, Jackie Hughes. Before #vanlife… before Instagram… before she could even drive: Laura’s belief in her ability to do road travel was shaped by her mom’s experience driving across the country when she was in her early twenties, and it stuck with her because Jackie’s journey was full of purpose, bravery, and quite a bit of fun packed into a handful of days and a tiny 1975 Camaro. | Big News: We’re Making Some Changes! | 04 Sep 2020 | 00:03:56
This platform as you know it started several years ago in response to the lack of representation of female road travelers in the media we consume. After over 100 written interviews published online, followed by more than 100 episodes of the WOTR podcast and the growth of this tight-knit online community, we know there are still more conversations to be had. But we also feel, more strongly than ever, that in the spirit of what WOTR has aimed to do-- broaden our perception of who is on the road, and elevate those voices and stories-- that our current team at @ravel.media are not the ones who need to be hosting these conversations moving forward. That’s why we’re making some big changes. Thanks to Diversify Vanlife, we are partnering to evolve this platform so that it can further serve the conversations that aren’t being had enough, led by the people we need to hear from most. Starting in October, Diversify Vanlife will replace the WOTR podcast under the name Nomads at the Intersections. This monthly show, hosted by founder Noami Grevemberg and co-host Anaïs Monique, will shift the narrative and navigate the challenges, journeys and inspirations of the modern nomadic movement while diving deep into the stories of underrepresented voices. If you’re already subscribed to WOTR on your favorite podcast app, you’ll automatically start getting Nomads at the Intersections content as the re-launch approaches. We’ll also drop some exciting updates right here as well as via Instagram @diversify.vanlife, so just sit tight, make sure you’re following along, and we’ll keep you updated. WOTR as the show you know it now with host Laura Borichevsky will be on air until Friday, 9/18. You’ll still be able to listen to past episodes after this date on the same podcast feed. We have some special things planned for our final two episodes so we’re hoping you tune in! Thanks to each of you for being here for what this community has grown into, and we’re excited to have you here to see where we can all go together next. Links You Need to Know About:

| You're Doing Your Best: Grizel Williams | 03 Apr 2020 | 00:48:14 | |
Mental health is something we've talked about before on the show, but never before has it felt more important to dive in. That's why this week, we took some time to focus on what challenges, resources, and tips this community has and needs. Whether you're a full-time traveler and your shelter is a car or a tent, or you have a more stationary place to stay and you're feeling stagnant-- the reality is that this forced by necessary stillness is a challenge for us all, on top of the anxiety that can be triggered during crisis. It's a good thing for us all that insightful, compassionate folks like Grizel Williams are a part of our community. Grizel lives on the road and is a writer with background in mental health counseling. After years in the field, she shares what mental health considerations she's thinking about now-- as well as what resources or practices we can all look to during this especially challenging time. | We Can Still Find Beauty: Giddi Oteo | 27 Mar 2020 | 00:35:09
Giddi Oteo, former full-time road traveler, has an inherent knack for holding both the real, transparent truth and the beauty around her. You’ll hear it from her as she shares about pregnancy and motherhood on the road, starting her travels with nearly no money, and building a business from scratch. And it’s a reminder that no matter how heavy a life chapter might feel, it’s still possible to find beauty and happiness around you. So if you’re in need of a pick-me-up that doesn’t sugar coat things-- one that gives you permission to both recognize the heaviness of where you’re at, but also one that encourages you to find some beauty around you today-- then you’re in just the right place. | COVID-19 and Travel | 17 Mar 2020 | 00:49:46
A timely episode for travelers out there wondering about what decisions to make in light of COVID-19, the novel coronavirus that has caused a global pandemic in recent weeks. Through the voices of two experts-- Registered Nurse Emily Scott and public health emergency planner Kate Pifer-- we navigate both baseline information as well as the challenging nuance of what it means to be a traveler in light of recent world events, while walking away with the message that how and when you travel does truly impact the lives of others. Things feel very heightened right now when it comes to cancellations and travel restrictions, but we could see a time in the future where travel feels safe again even though COVID-19 exists in our communities. The reality is, we don’t really know. So if you’re listening to this episode, we encourage you to do so not only with the next handful of weeks in mind, but with a long-term mindset of what it means to be a responsible traveler and containing the spread of harmful disease, even you yourself don’t feel personally impacted. ** Please note that these interviews were both recorded on Sunday, 3/15 and news, public mandates, and what we know about public health best practices are all evolving rapidly as we learn more about COVID-19 and its impact on the world. Brittany Newson, an Air Force veteran, current student, and recently married female traveler knows that the road can be an incredible facilitator of new life chapters. But she also helps us to see in this episode that travel on its own doesn’t create the changes for us: it’s what we do with it when we put ourselves in the driver’s seat that allows us to turn the page on our own terms. | Love Stories from the Road | 14 Feb 2020 | 00:44:07
We usually aim to show the sides of road travel that aren’t over-romanticized, but for this episode we wanted to gush a little. So we asked for voice submissions while we were off the air, with one simple intention: tell us your love stories. And wow-- did you all deliver! So in this episode, we’ll be sharing all kinds of love stories from the road: whether it’s a love you found, or grew, or lost; whether it’s a for partner, a friend, a dog, or yourself; we’re eager to share your love stories that happened because you made road travel a priority. In this episode, you’ll hear the voices of:

Travel nursing is an incredible career that enables you to both help others and get to see new places. But just like any job or form of travel, there are always aspects that can get over-romanticized, and travel nursing is no exception. Em Cheng, a travel nurse currently exploring the West Coast, joins this episode to share some of the practical aspects of becoming a travel nurse and why she loves it so much, as well as address some of the biggest challenges associated with taking on this fast-paced career. Whether it’s for the holidays you celebrate, the time you spend reflecting, or the gifts you exchange out of love or habit-- the year’s end is full of reminders of family. And family is complicated for a lot of us out there, especially when travel is also a big part of our lives. We know that there are so many feelings and stories out there when it comes to how this community defines family. So we recently asked you all to submit voice memos telling us all about it. Whether it’s people you grew up with, the chosen family you’ve cultivated over the years, your dog, or something else entirely— we asked: how do you define family? And how does it interact with who you are as someone who likes to hit the road? We heard a lot of insights, new experiences, and beautiful sentiments the weekend of the Women on the Road Campout last month— and if you know us, you know we couldn’t keep it all to ourselves, so we wanted to share a piece of the experience with you. That’s exactly why our team took a mic around and asked a handful of attendees each a few questions. The result is 12 voices, recorded live at the Campout on Ute territory just outside Moab, Utah, sharing a bit about their travels, reasons for coming all the way down a dusty backroad to meet us here, and what they’re taking from this experience. | Small Gestures: Maggie Lam | 18 Oct 2019 | 00:40:53
When we first connected with part-time van traveler Maggie Lam, it was about a post she had written and we reshared on social media. And it was about small gestures Maggie has experienced during her travels, why they you might not know that they are in fact microaggressions, and why representation of people of color within the road travel community matters. So we wanted to have a conversation with her about those small gestures, which you’ll hear in this episode. Through it all, you’ll also get to hear about the small gestures that truly make a positive impact-- like listening to and amplifying underrepresented voices-- and how you can use your privilege for good, both on the road and when you’re stationary. If you’re looking to learn about how to be a better ally and accomplice for people of color on the road, or if you’re simply looking to hear a perspective you might not have before from a female road traveler, this episode is an especially great listen! | Why #VanLife is Here to Stay: Bre Acio & Lacey Mayer | 28 Jun 2019 | 00:41:45
Van life: what started as a trend has only grown, evolving into a full-fledged movement in the US and beyond. And despite the multitude of vacation-style photos online showcasing this mobile living arrangement, there are many practical reasons people choose to live on the road for more than a couple weeks-- and no, it typically has nothing to do with Instagram. While the roots of living in your vehicle are several decades old-- it’s not a novel concept whatsoever-- there are more tools now than ever to make it accessible, and because of the economic outlook many Millennials are facing, the hashtag-turned-movement is also becoming a viable option to address affordable housing and creating a promising financial outlook. That said, as you’ll hear on this episode, it’s not so easy to go against the social grain and there are true challenges associated with not having a stable mailing address, crossing state lines regularly, and dealing with local community policies around vehicle habitation. To join this in-depth conversation, two incredible female travelers are giving their insights-- Bre Acio and Lacey Mayer, a couple who go by @theladiesvan on Instagram. Bre and Lacey are not only incredibly passionate about finding ways to make vanlife and long term vehicle habitation more socially acceptable, but own two businesses that do their part to make it more accessible to those who want to get on the road. In this episode, you’ll hear:
