The Mist28 Oct 202401:25:13

We did it. We got an episode out for October. Hooray.

Here's The Mist from 2007. A movie that has a very memorable ending.

We talk about the whole dang thing, and make jokes both high and low brow. We also get to hear Alex being existential at some point. What fun.

We are kicking off 2021 month with a movie that a friend of Alex produced! Knowing nothing about the VHS horror series, including the fact that is stands for Video Horror Shorts apparently!, we go in very blind. Listeners. This one is a weird one. Ouija - Origin of Evil15 Nov 202101:48:45

This episode contains spoilers for the movie we are discussing! And also for Ouija, a much worse movie we didn't see.

Our listeners suggested we watch a movie that is a sequel (prequel) to a movie that we hadn't watched and we've never bowed down from a challenge yet! So we watched Ouija - The origin of Evil from the spooky mind of Mike Flanagan. Join us in the swinging 60s as we talk about demons (again), why they're doing what they do (again) and what board games Betty would have rather played. It's been a minute since we got legit scared and hey, this one does it. Tune in now.

Bonus Guest appearance on "Here for the Boos"09 Nov 202101:18:11

Hello, dear listeners! Here is a little treat for your pod feed by way of a bonus episode. Billie was recently a guest on the "Here For the Boos" podcast and she had a lovely conversation with Jax all about learning to love horror movies and being excited to dive deeper into the genre. It was a fun chance to be on another podcast and Jax was so kind to send over the mp3 to put in the NtF lineup. Give it a listen and then head on over to Here for the Boos for some more spooky scary content and see just why so many people are into horror.

Hope you enjoy!

Hellbound: Hellraiser II08 Nov 202101:31:39

In the words of mid-70s Canadian rock band Trooper, we "Raise a little hell" on this week's episode of the show. Listeners demanded (well one of them did. And it was more of a suggestion) we watch Hellbound: Hellraiser II and boy oh boy did we ever.

Join us as we dive into our own personal hells to watch this film and talk about all the ins and outs. (eugh). Maybe we'll even answer the question we pose and find out just what Leviathan's deal is after all.

Green Room01 Nov 202101:29:26

This episode contains spoilers for the movie we are discussing!

It's listener suggestion month over here at Nothing to Fear and all November long we are talking about the movies that our lovely fans, our wonderful Feardos, have suggested. However I did forget who suggested this movie... Reach out if it was you!

We watched Green Room! The movie that teaches you a valuable lesson about not forgetting your phone in shared spaces. Come along and listen. Now, without spoiling too much I will give you a head's up that this movie has a lot of Nazi's in it. A lot of white supremacy symbology and imagery. So. Now you know.

M3GAN01 Jul 202401:50:34

This movie asks the question, "Wait. Is relying on technology to do most of the things for you, a bad thing?"

We're talking about M3GAN this week, after Alex heard me rave about it back during its theatrical run in 2023.

Join us as we dip into the Psychology Corner, chat about artificial intelligence, and even touch on something called the Green Light Fallacy.

Honestly, that last one sounds like a mid tier ska band.

Enjoy the episode, everyone!

An American Werewolf in London18 Oct 202101:32:05

This episode contains spoilers for the movie we are discussing!

Beware the moon. Stick to the roads. Why don't we all head back to the Slaughtered Lamb and tune in to this episode all about An American Werewolf in London. Is the title of this movie enough to give away almost all of the plot? Certainly! Will that stop the NtF crew from making an episode about it? Absolutely not at all. We have a howling good time talking about this 1981 movie from John Landis. Awoooo

Hush11 Oct 202101:34:44

We return to the sub genre of horror that belongs to the home invasion trope with 2016's Hush. A writer, working at her isolated rural cabin, faces off against a masked assailant with a crossbow. We've seen it before and heaven know's we'll see it again but does Hush bring something new to the table.

Spoiler alert: Yes it does.

Follow us for more life hacks, folks. If you are a bored millennial type whose dad owns a security firm and your friend group is a girl you're in love with and her boyfriend who is terrible, maybe don't go into robbing with them. Especially if the target is a seemingly feeble blind, elderly war veteran. We watched 2016's Don't Breathe and we...well we breathed the whole time we recorded this because we're rule breakers like that. The Ring (2002)27 Sep 202101:46:36

This episode contains spoilers for the movie we are discussing!

It's time to seal away the remakes and reboots for another month and we've found an old abandoned well as this big heavy well cover. That oughta do it. This week we talked about the 2002 remake The Ring. Probably one of the horror movies that lives large in the memories of the hosts when it came out. There aren't many other horror movies from that era that we remember being so in the zeitgeist. Does the remake do it better than the original or just do it differently? Join us as we watch this strange blank VHS tape and then make copies for all our friends.

Just a note, there are a couple of different scenes in this movie depicting suicide so go in well armed, friends.

Quarantine20 Sep 202101:39:21

This, especially nice, episode contains spoilers for the movie we are discussing!

We're covering remakes and reboots this month and today we're looking at that particular sub-sub-sub-genre of non-english language films being remade in English. This week we're giving Quarantine a look. After enjoying the film Rec (episode 15 for those of you who wanna check it out), we're finally getting around to the American remake. They may have thrown 10 million more dollars at the budget but how does the film stack up. Listen along as we tell you.

Brief trigger warning at around the 00:56:27-01:00:40 we talk a bit about cults and the talk of ritualized suicide comes up.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)13 Sep 202101:34:05

This episode contains spoilers for the movie we are discussing! Also. At timecode 00:29:23 there is a brief mention (about 30 seconds) of a scene in the movie where a character suicides. Give yourself permission to jam that skip button a couple of times to navigate past that point.

Our second remake of the month sees us hitchhiking along a dusty Texas highway before deciding to stay the hell out of whatever town this movie takes place around. Yes the remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre promises to be bigger, bloodier, scarier and grosser, but does that mean it's a good remake? Also stay tuned for our new segment, Billie aimlessly scrolls through an actor's IMDb page. What good content, y'all.

Paranormal Activity Three30 Aug 202101:54:30

This episode contains spoilers for the movie we are discussing!

We're finishing off our bumper crop of sequel month by dipping back into that found footage franchise that shows absolutely no signs of slowing down with Paranormal Activity Three. Join up again with Katie, Kristi and the demon we've only ever called Jeffery and find out how it ALL started. Unless there's more information hinting at an even BIGGER and broader world of demons and cults. But.... that'd be wild right? Who would do that?

The Conjuring 223 Aug 202101:44:02

Ed and Lorraine Warren are back back back, baby. And this time they're heading across the pond to the Big Smoke to see what's going on with all the demons in that neck of the woods.

Join the NtF crew as we tag along, make observations about the efficacy of demons telling people their names and question the structural integrity of adding a basement pool in just any old house. And we also wonder just what exactly is going on in Billie's closet now that's she's well and truly out of it. Also there's a nun in this movie

Paranormal Activity28 Jun 202101:52:14

This Podcast contains spoilers for the movie we are talking about.

Luke picked this movie this week simply because he wants to do the third instalment one day so we dive into 2007's creepy found footage offering 'Paranormal Activity'. Having actually seen this movie before, Billie goes in very scared and comes out scared but also angry. And surprised. Well done movie. You'll also hear Billie struggling with audio levels (what else is new. Sorry, listeners!) and maybe, JUST maybe, you can hear Miroki telling Alex what he thought of the film. There's also a minor TW about some sections of this movie (or alternate endings MAYBEEEE) that talk about self harm. It comes up a couple of times so there's no specific time codes. Enjoy the episode! Plus. Stay tuned to the very very end for maybe some exciting developments.

Happy 4 years of Nothing to Fear!

This movie has been waiting for us to tackle it since we started the podcast, and I have to wonder, did we leave it too long?

Despite some of this movie's drawbacks, it is undeniably a seminal text for the found footage movie genre, and a master class in how movies were marketed during the infant stages of the internet.

Join us and stay tuned right to the very end where I talk about the plans for the summer of Nothing to Fear!

Alien14 Jun 202101:58:10

This episode contains spoilers for the movie we're talking about (and....Anna Karenina weirdly...you've been warned)

The NtF crew was on their way back from a deep space mining expedition when we were awoken from our hibernation when we picked up a signal repeating every twelve seconds. That turned out to be the latest episode of Nothing to Fear. We're talkin all about an absolute classic of the horror genre with 1979's Alien.

So grab your cat, check in on the science officer acting strangely and join us as we meet the Xenomorph on film for the first time.

Insidious 224 May 202101:47:20

This podcast contains SPOILERS and also a big Trigger warning. There is a large section of this movie that deals with gender presentation and the idea of a man in a dress as a serial killer and we talk about it. It’s a good conversation but it’s understandable if any of the trans and gender diverse part of the audience would like to skip it. Check the time codes and check in with yourself. This Podcast contains spoilers.

Have we been doing this show for 50 episodes or 2? No way to know but that won't stop us from talking about Robert Eggers' 2019 film, The Lighthouse. You may be asking yourself just how many times can three people say the word 'Protean' in a single podcast. You will have to listen along to answer that question.
Also, stay tuned for some special fun cameo appearances by Luke's spooky door, his sister Joelle and, introducing, random dude who came to buy something they had put on kijiji. It's certainly more fun than being mad at a one-eyed seagull that's for sure.

His House03 May 202101:56:47

This podcast contains spoilers! And this is a 2020 film so consider your self warned.

Don't worry. Nothing was stolen from an Apeth in order to record this episode. So we're all good on that front. This is an interesting one for us here at NtF. Billed as a horror movie, we ask and try to answer the question, "Did this story NEED to be a horror movie?" You'll have to listen to find out. This movie deals with a lot of heavy topics around immigration, refugees, loss and PTSD so it may be on the heavier side, content wise. It's a clever take on a horror movie to mix it in with the trauma of fleeing war torn regions of the world and settling in a land that seems hostile and confusing in different and unexpected ways. We hope that you enjoy!

Next week we are watching 1990's Tremors

28 Days Later12 May 202401:11:47

The trio tackles a "zombie" movie from the turn of this Century.

Let's all head to 2002 UK for 28 Days Later, a movie starring Cillian Murphy as he tries to survive in a virus-ridden London, beset by enraged infected people. This is not about Sandra Bullock going to rehab, nor is it in the same universe, and honestly. We have been robbed of that possibility.

Host12 Apr 202101:38:14

This episode contains spoilers. SERIOUSLY. This movie came out in 2020 and we spoil a lot of it so make sure you watch this movie before you listen if you don't want to have the plot spoiled.

As if the Pandemic wasn't tough enough, what happens if a bunch of your friends do a Zoom seance and then summon a demon? Sounds like a bit more risky than that lawyer who got the cat filter stuck on his screen, eh?

Get comfy, make sure your microphone is turned on and you've arranged your bookshelves for maximum Zoom cred.

BONUS Ma Mini-sode with Scotty Landes06 Apr 202100:48:49

Join Billie as she heads out on her own for another Nothing to Fear Mini-sode. Today she is chatting with writer, Scotty Landes (Workaholics, Ma, The Bananas Podcast) about the movie that he wrote!

It was a super chill chat where we talked horror, the creative process, a bit about how movies get made and a great many things. Please enjoy and when you're done, check out The Bananas Podcast for weird news stories told by two absolute gems. The Bananas Podcast makes their home on the Exactly Right Podcast Network.

Thanks, Scotty, for taking time out of your day to chat to me, making me feel very comfortable and at home in the interviewer seat and talking about how movies get made! We can't wait to see what you're working on next!

Take a trip back into the realm of your high school days. Asking people to buy booze for you and trying to find a place to drink. What could go wrong with partying in some random lady's basement right? We chat about the pros and cons of social media, as well as the joys and dangers of that same new technology we're all using.
