Columbo: "Last Salute to the Commodore" (1976)16 Jan 202300:39:11

'Twas then that I wished that I was dead and Columbo could go to sea no more.

"Last Salute to the Commodore" was the sixth episode of Columbo's fifth season, which aired on May 2, 1976. Starring Peter Falk, Columbo is a crime drama series that follows the adventures of the ostensibly-bumbling, quietly-cunning Lieutenant Columbo. The formula is simple: The audience gets to see a too-clever-by-half killer attempt to get away with a crime, and then watch Columbo toy with — and ultimately bust — the murderer. It's great fun.

"Last Salute to the Commodore" was at one time conceived as a send-off to the series. Directed by Danger Man and The Prisoner star Patrick McGoohan, it's attracted a reputation as a baffling mess that somewhat randomly breaks the mold set by the series. It's all about

In addition to Falk, it also stars The Man from U.N.C.L.E.'s Robert Vaughn, Wilfrid Hyde-White, John Dehner, Dennis Dugan, Diane Baker, Bruce Kirby, Joshua Brant, Susan Foster, Fred Draper, Rod McCary, and John Finnegan.

Listen to Áine and Kevin meander around the mizzenmast with topics like pacing, Patrick McGoohan's career, and behind-the-scenes Mystery to Me drama.

Crime takes a backseat to football, pushy neighbors, and strange vibes in this installment, which sees Officer Bill Gannon invite Sergeant Joe Friday to his suburban abode for a hang-out session.

The Penguin Pool Murder (1932)22 Mar 202101:05:45

Prepare to plunge into a parable of penguins and peril!

The Penguin Pool Murder is a 1932 film directed by George Archainbaud, starring Edna May Oliver and James Gleason. The pre-Code flick is based on the 1931 novel of the same name by Stuart Palmer.

Oliver stars as the peerless Hildegarde Withers, a formidable schoolteacher who becomes embroiled in a icy murder mystery while on a field trip to the New York Aquarium in Coney Island. Gleason plays the snarky detective Oscar Piper, who looks to Ms. Withers for advice while trying to solve this cold-hearted homicide.

And who doesn't love a movie about two sleuths who prove to be a birds of a feather? From its Depression Era weirdness to its fun characters, The Penguin Pool Murder is a delightful rookery romp. Listen to Áine and Kevin prattle on about the perfection of penguins, progressive politics, and pernicious personal perfidy.

After the Thin Man (1936)17 Mar 202101:10:30

Wake up, all you smoke dreamers! It's time to talk about the best married couple in all of film history: Nick and Nora Charles!

After the Thin Man is a 1936 comedy-mystery film from director W.S. Van Dyke, starring William Powell, Myrna Loy, and Jimmy Stewart. It's the direct sequel to the wildly popular Thin Man film made two years before, which itself was based on a novel by Dashiell Hammett.

In this follow-up, detectives Nick and Nora Charles arrive back home in San Francisco on New Year's Eve, fresh off their mystery-solving success in New York. But a new year brings new crimes, and the bantering couple finds themselves drawn into a murder mystery involving a member of Nora's snobby family.

And let's just say that this after party truly gets one thing right by centering things around the fun banter of Nick and Nora. We get a lot of chemistry between Powell and Loy, as they piece together a rather silly mystery involving bad singing, lost security deposits, and Jimmy Stewart at his most zany.

Listen to Áine and Kevin sit around the fire, puffing on some smoke dreams and all the delightful wackiness of this old film. We'll chat about awkward live entertainment at restaurants, the Scooby Gang, and the insanity of a beloved dog character getting cucked right onscreen in this picture.

Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase (1939)15 Mar 202101:36:22

Want to see Nancy Drew act less like a beloved amateur sleuth and more like a villainous corrupt cop in a prestige drama? Then we've got a movie for you!

Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase is a 1939 mystery comedy film from director William Clemens, starring Bonita Granville, Frankie Thomas, and John Litel. It's based on the novel of the same name, penned by Mildred Wirt Benson for the Stratemeyer Syndicate. But boy, does this staircase twist away from the original premise!

Nancy must help two elderly sisters inherit their father's mansion, so they can donate the building and create a new hospital for River Heights. And she's decided that that this noble end justifies any means, including tampering with evidence in a murder case, faking a suicide note, and drugging old people. Yes, those are all real things that happen in this film about a plucky teen detective.

Listen to Áine and Kevin complain about this movie's many missteps, namely its decision to assassinate its titular character's ... well, character.

The House of Fear (1945)10 Mar 202101:05:58

There is a house in ol' Scotland

They call it Drearcliffe Dùn

And it's been the ruin of many a poor comrade

And God, I know I'm one

The House of Fear is a 1945 film directed by Roy William Neill, starring Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr. John Watson. It's the tenth film in the series starring Rathbone and Bruce, and loosely based on Arthur Conan Doyle's short story "The Five Orange Pips." Which is to say, both tales involve nefarious parties threatening victims via discarded bits of fruit!

In this rollicking and ridiculous movie, Holmes and Watson must investigate who's been bumping off"good comrades," the name given to members of an exclusive club of single men living together in Scotland's remote and desolate Drearcliffe House. The murder vacation of a lifetime ensues, along with all manner of haunted. house silliness, complete with a Mrs. Danvers-esque ripoff for a maid, sinister chums, stereotypical Scottish locals, and, of course, Watson firing a gun at ghosts in the dark.

Listen to good comrades Áine and Kevin pipe up about pips, dream vacations, Irish step-dancing, and the Cleveland Torso Murders. Come make yourself at home in the house of fear!

Nancy Drew ... Detective (1938)08 Mar 202101:15:21

Nancy Drew ... Detective is a 1938 comedy crime film starring Bonita Granville, Frankie Thomas, and John Litel, directed by William Clemens.

Nancy is back, and this time she's doing what she does best: helping the elderly. (Seriously, like every other book in the series seemed to be about our favorite sleuth assisting some poor older person who is being conned or harassed by lowlifes). Ripping a page from the Drew book The Password to Larkspur Lane, Nancy must save a kidnapped (and wealthy) older lady who vanishes before she can make a big donation to Nancy's school.

Listen to Áine and Kevin chat about competitive swimming, the geekiness of ham radio operation, River Heights' fascination with an unfortunate local doctor.

Sherlock Holmes in Washington (1943)03 Mar 202101:32:04

Pack up your pipe, magnifying glass, and deerstalker cap, and refill your Metro card — we're going to Washington D.C.!

Sherlock Holmes in Washington is a 1943 film starring Basil Rathbone, Nigel Bruce, Marjorie Lord, and George Zucco, and the fifth installment of the Roy William Neill series. And let's just say that, while subplots in "A Study in Scarlet" and "The Valley of Fear" do indicate that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was fascinated with America, this movie is ridiculous!

The setup is simple: A British spy carrying key documents vanishes in Washington D.C. Naturally, Holmes is dispatched to the capital of the United States, along with his pal Watson. They've got enemy agents to catch, and monuments to gawk at!

Tune in to hear Áine and Kevin riff on villainous lamp-phones, acceptable bridezilla-ing, orange drinks from the 1980s, and the jolly cruelty of one Dr. John Watson. And check out this wacky film — truly the middle school Washington trip of the Sherlock Holmes universe!

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation: "Chaos Theory" (2001)01 Mar 202100:46:26

"Chaos Theory" is the second episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation's second season. The show stars William Petersen as CSI's fearless leader, Gil Grissom, with Marg Helgenberger, Gary Dourdan, George Eads, Jorja Fox, and Paul Guilfoyle rounding out the rest of the investigatory ensemble.

In this episode, the CSI squad hits the philosophy textbooks as part of the search for a missing college student. Paige Rycoff vanished from her dorm room just minutes before she was set to drop out and head home. And campus is populated with no shortage of sketchy characters who may have sought to do her harm.

CSI rookies Áine and Kevin shine some ultraviolet light on how the episode balances fun procedural cheesiness with sophisticated and satisfying storytelling choices. And stick around for the twist! A dead end might be the worst place to be on a missing persons case, but the conclusion to this episode is as lively and memorable as anything.

Dragnet 1966 (1969)24 Feb 202101:23:44

Ladies and gentlemen, the review you are about to hear is true. The names have not been changed to protect the innocent.

Dragnet 1966 is a 1969 made-for-TV movie starring Jack Webb, Harry Morgan, Vic Perrin, and Virginia Gregg. This film helped bring about the Dragnet franchise's triumphant return to television, with creator and producer Webb once again starring as everyone's favorite stiff, Sergeant Joe Friday of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Friday and his elderly partner Bill Gannon find themselves tracking down a serial killer who preys on single women and models. The investigation takes them everywhere from the Garden of Eden to the dregs of Dogtown, as well as in the path of a number of exasperating Angelenos.

Áine and Kevin deliver more than just the facts, ma'am, in this review of the flick, ranting about the meandering plot, the oddly-fascinating Friday, the flippant treatment of a horrific series of real-life murders, and, of course, those dang hippies!

Beware of Ladies (1936)22 Feb 202101:02:17

Beware of ladies bearing notebooks, pens, and dramatic hats.

Beware of Ladies is a 1936 film from director Irving Pichel starring Judith Allen, Donald Cook, and George Meeker. In it, Allen stars as a sly reporter tasked with helping an idealistic candidate in a DA race snag the women's vote. But this savvy journalist may end up wrecking the lawyer's chances, as they're pursued by corrupt operators looking to smear the man as a wife-stealing creep!

Ladies aren't the only thing you have to worry about with this picture. Beware of the perils of low production values! Beware of bad, cliched writing! Beware of strange 1930s sexism!

Listen to Áine and Kevin try to salvage a decent time out of this muddled caper by making jokes about the Beatles, Game of Thrones, famous musicians, and beloved character actress Betty White.

Nancy Drew... Reporter (1939)27 Jan 202101:24:08

Nancy Drew... Reporter is a 1939 film from director William Clemens, starring Bonita Granville as the titular teen sleuth, as well as Frankie Thomas and John Litel. The movie is the second in a series of four Nancy Drew films that kicked off just eight years after the Stratemeyer Syndicate first introduced the character into the mystery canon.

This screwball feature sees the eponymous girl detective taking on the role of cub reporter for a local River Heights paper. But Nancy Drew's not out to write some puff piece for her internship. She's looking to break a big scoop — with some help from her reluctant boyfriend-slash-news-photographer Ted Nickerson. Zaniness ensues when these reporters-in-training begin investigating the murder of a local woman.

Áine and Kevin tackle this assignment with the gusto of hard-boiled journalists, although it's fitting to say that plenty of elements in this film ought to have been spiked.

Double Indemnity (1944)27 Jan 202101:19:12

Double Indemnity is a 1944 film noir from director Billy Wilder. The writing process for this flick proved to be quite the double-teaming, with Wilder partnering with hardboiled author Raymond Chandler to pen the thriller. The story is based on the 1943 novella by James M. Cain.

The central story is a noir classic: a sultry femme fatale teams up with a dupe working as an insurance salesman to kill her husband. Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanywck as the main murderous duo. But can they get away with murder with a dogged claims adjuster portrayed by Edward G. Robinson on the case?

Áine and Kevin are here to dole out a lump sum of compliments to this excellent noir, and discuss what makes this film a double dose of cynicism and heartbreak.

Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon (1942)27 Jan 202101:02:47

Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon is a 1942 film by director Roy William Neill, as well as a very, very loose adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's 1903 novel The Adventure of the Dancing Men. It's the fourth movie in a series of Sherlock Holmes films starring iconic duo Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, and the second picture to be set during the Second World War.

The story is that Holmes must keep a key scientist — whose device could alter the course of the fight against fascism — out of the clutches of the Nazis and other sinister forces. Holmes is "aided" in his quest by Bruce's bumbling Dr. Watson, the slightly-less bumbling denizens of Scotland Yard, and a wardrobe full of embarrassing-and-occasionally-racist disguises.

Does this flawed Holmes picture prove to be a "secret weapon" of sorts, or is it a complete misfire? Listen to this episode to decode the mystery!

Moonlighting: "The Dream Sequence Always Rings Twice" (1985)27 Jan 202101:00:18

Ding-dong! Now who could that be ringing the door? Could it be a gorgeously-shot episode of the beloved eighties detective series Moonlighting, starring Cybill Shepherd and Bruce Willis?

This series follows super model Maddie Hayes, who's forced to moonlight as a private detective with David Addison after an accountant steals all her hard-earned money. Sexual tension, snappy dialogue, and creative homages to classic films ensue.

The fourth episode of the show's second season sees Shepherd and Willis trading barbs — and then dream sequences — while theorizing over a long ago murder. And it's got more wit and style than you can shake a clarinet at.

Listen to Áine and Kevin shine some light on this luminous, battle-of-the-sexes-themed ode to film noir.

Satan Met a Lady (1936)27 Jan 202100:58:22

Satan Met a Lady is an infernal 1936 detective picture from William Dieterle starring Bette Davis and Warren William. The film is the second of three movies based off Dashiell Hammett's classic novel The Maltese Falcon to come out between 1931 and 1941. And the second time was certainly not the charm!

Basically, the story is that a devilishly annoying detective and a bunch of crooks, including Davis' character, are after a bejeweled trumpet. And Áine and Kevin are here to share that the film truly blows.

Ring of Fear is a 1954 film noir from directed by James Edward Grant. It stars hardboiled author Mickey Spillane and lion tamer Clyde Beatty as themselves, along with Pat O'Brien, Sean McClory, Marian Carr, and John Bromfield.

After a revenge-seeking madman begins sabotaging Clyde Beatty's circus, famous author Mickey Spillane must come in and bungle around for about an hour or so. It's basically the strange child of circus B-roll and enough leaden crime thriller dialogue to keep Mike Hammer's Colt .45 full of bullets.

Dragnet (1954)03 Oct 202200:35:31

Dragnet is a 1954 film starring Jack Webb, along with Ben Alexander, Richard Boone, Virginia Gregg, Stacy Harris, Vic Perrin, and Ann Robinson. Friday and his partner Frank Smith get assigned the homicide of a low-level gangster. They proceed to repeatedly harass their suspects, based on rather flimsy evidence for over an hour. Along the way, they run into a prosecutor who plays a serial killer in a later Dragnet installment, snide grand jury liberals, a nerdy beatnik musician, and poker enthusiasts!

Áine and Kevin spout off rapid-fire responses around Dragnet's distinctive dialogue, overly-long shots, and the abuse of power.

"Dizzy Detectives" (1943), "Who Done It?" (1949), "'Fraidy Cat (1951), and "Hook a Crook" (1955)22 Aug 202200:34:00

"Dizzy Detectives" is a 1943 short film starring The Three Stooges (this iteration consists of Moe Howard, Larry Fine, and Curly Howard). It's all about three bumbling rookie policemen facing off against thieves (and a gorilla).

Who Done It? is a 1949 short film starring Moe Howard, Larry Fine, and Shemp Howard. These Three Stooges play private detectives assigned to save a kidnapped millionaire.

'Fraidy Cat is 1951 short film that's an identical remake of Dizzy Detectives. That stars erstwhile Stooge Joe Besser, alongside Jim Hawthorne. And then Besser and Hawthorne teamed up for the 1955 Hook a Crook as well.

We watched all of these back-to-back, in our own self-inflicted, Three Stooges-themed take on Groundhog Day. Listen to Áine and Kevin slap around ideas like "Stooge fandom," plagiarism, and Áine's embarrassing double entendres.

The Funky Phantom: Season One (1971-1972)15 Aug 202200:34:36

Heavens to Betsy Ross! My stars and stripes! Jumping George Washington!

The Funky Phantom was a Hanna-Barbera mystery cartoon that ran from September 11, 1971 to January 1, 1972. It had a relatively short afterlife, only lasting one season (or seventeen episodes). The show stars Micky Dolenz, Tommy Cook, and Kristina Holland as a trio of teenaged sleuths stuck in a somewhat disturbing love triangle. Daws Butler stars as the titular specter, recycling his turn as Snagglepuss, which itself was a spoof of Bert Lahr. Jonathan "Funky Phantom" or "Mudsy" Muddlemore is a Revolutionary War-era soldier who died in a tragic clock-related accident with his cat. After being resurrected from said clock, he joins up with the teens and they travel far and wide, unmasking fake ghosts, a la Scooby Doo.

Dragnet: "The Big .22 Rifle for Christmas" (1952) and "The Big Little Jesus" (1953) and Dragnet 1967: "The Christmas Story" (1967) 26 Dec 202200:51:26

It was the Dragnet Christmas story that kept on giving.

"The Big Little Jesus" first debuted on the Dragnet radio program that preceded the television show. "The Big Little Jesus" first ran on December 22, 1953. It was re-broadcast on December 21, 1954 and December 25, 1956. It made its television debut on December 24, 1953, as the seventeenth episode of the show's third season. It starred Jack Webb, Ben Alexander, Harry Bartell, Joe Carioca Jr., James Griffith, Ralph Moody, Herb Vigran, Walter Sande, and Billy Chapin. In the show's successor series, Dragnet 1967, it was redone and re-christened "The Christmas Story." That aired on December 21, 1967, and starred Jack Webb and Harry Morgan, and then practically the same cast! Bartell, Moody, and Vigran return, along with newcomers Bobby Troup, Byron Morrow, William Challee, Fernando Vásquez, Craig Huxley, and The Brady Bunch's Barry Williams.

It's all about a missing statue of the Christ child that goes away from its manger right on the eve of ... well, Christmas Eve.

We also review "The Big .22" Rifle for Christmas." It's the seventh episode of Dragnet's second season, and it aired on December 18, 1952. Like "The Big Little Jesus," it was repeatedly aired in the radio version of the show as well. It was first broadcast December 22, 1949, and then re-recorded and put out again on December 21, 1950. That second version also aired on December 20, 1951. It was re-recorded a third time and aired again on December 21, 1952. Versions also ran on December 20, 1955 and March 20, 1956.

The television version stars Jack Webb, Herbert Ellis, John Martin, June Whitley Taylor, Sammy Ogg, Virginia Christine, Renny McEvoy, and Olan Soule. This is a tragic, gutting Dragnet Christmas tale about a gift that goes awry for two families. It's well-written, gripping, and not funny at all. But it gets at the themes of loss and forgiveness and family far better than its sillier counterpart.

Listen to Áine and Kevin carol on about twenty dollar gold pieces, M*A*S*H, Áine's jealousy of Julie London, and Jack Webb's podcasting career.

Merry Christmas to all those who celebrate, and happy holidays to you all!

Barnaby Jones: "Fatal Flight" (1973)13 Jun 202200:29:12

This episode also featured Lee Meriwether, Richard Anderson, Jerry Douglas, Murray Hamilton, and Pippa Scott.

Ebsen's Jones is a detective who comes out of retirement after his son is killed while working as a private investigator.
