Karen has also studied and completed training on the practical application of Behaviour Adjustment Training for fearful, anxious and aggressive dogs and Aggressive Dog Conflict Resolution with Behaviourist and author Cheryl Smith and has completed the Master Aggression Course with world-renowned Behaviour Consultant and expert on dog aggression, Michael Shikashio. Her continuing education and experience have ensured Karen has developed expertise in dog psychological issues manifesting themselves as anxiety or aggression.

Karen’s training specialties include Rally Obedience, Agility, Working Dogs Tracking, Scent work, and puppy foundations. She is a member of the International Association of Animal Behaviour Consultants, The Agility Association of Canada, the Canadian Association for Professional Dog Trainers and is certified in Pet First Aid and CPR.

Karen lives in York Region with her dogs most of which compete in obedience, agility and Rally Obedience. Her dogs have reached master level in all sports.

Barbara brings another dynamic to our team as she is a teacher and trainer of both humans and canines. Barbara has been teaching dog obedience classes for the past 10 years with Muttz with Mannerz™ with a focus on puppy manners, fun with scenting and fun with agility. She is also a yoga instructor qualified to teach various types of yoga. Barbara has expanded her knowledge of pet care in her role as a part-time receptionist at the Stouffville Vet Clinic.

Barbara, like so many of the Muttz with Mannerz team, believes in giving back and is a member of the St. John Ambulance Dog Therapy program where she dedicates many hours visiting hospitals, retirement homes and high schools with Hunter, her four-legged son. Hunter’s calm, kind, enthusiastic personality bring joy to all he meets. Barbara has just adopted another boy from Speaking of Dogs Rescue, Baxter an adorable miniature poodle with a feisty personality who we know will be a future star team on our team. 

Barbara continues educating herself by taking courses and training in the pet care. She has taken “Introduction to Acupressure for small animals”.  She is currently enrolled in a “Dog massage” course to expand her knowledge on what she delivers. We are excited that she offers new programs such as DOGA; bring your dogs to yoga, and Scenting courses.

Karen Baxter has loved dogs all her life and feels privileged that she has the ideal job… following her life-long passion and working with dogs. Beginning her professional career with dogs over 20 years ago, Karen brings an experience and joy to her work that can be felt by each dog and dog owner that she works with regardless of the size or the breed of dog. Karen’s training philosophy is “one size does NOT fit all!” and true to the Unified K9 difference, tailors her training protocols and/or treatment plans to the needs of the dog and the lifestyle and goals of the dog’s owner. Karen has participated in various training programs over several years preparing for her career in dog training. She is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer having passed the Knowledge Assessment examination through the Certification Council for Professional Pet Dog Trainers.  She is a graduate of Animal Behaviour College’s Certified Dog Trainer program. For as long as Julia can remember she had a passion for animals. She’s spent most of her life training animals in one way or another. During her childhood, she was involved in the equine industry, training, riding, and working with horses. This broadened her knowledge of behaviour and body language as a means of communication, not only with horses but with all animals - eventually leading her to a career in dog training.

She furthered her education at university, obtaining her Bachelor of Science in zoology. Following university, she became an ESL teacher to learn the tools used to educate people. After having a good basis in teaching, she continued her education and became a certified dog trainer through Animal Behaviour College. She founded Uxbridge Canine Academy 2020 (formerly D-Lux Canine Training Academy founded in 2017) and has been teaching her clients how to build a lasting bond with their canine companions ever since.

Julia is a member of several associations including

• Agility Association of Canada
• UK Agility International
• Canadian Association of Rally Obedience

Julia competes regularly in Rally Obedience and Agility with her Border Collie, Aspen. Julia was the 2019 and 2021 West Regional Champions in the 24' division and placed 9th at the National Championships in 2019. She was also an alternate for the IFCS, Canadian National Agility Team in 2022. Julia is currently working towards becoming an AAC judge and has taken on the role of Regional Director for Ontario West through the Agility Association of Canada.

Diane has had a lifelong love of animals and knew at some point she would enter the world of Animal Welfare, specifically around Companion Animals. After a long career, Diane was able to leave the corporate world in 2004 and decided to immerse herself in dogs, animal welfare, and humane education. Her experience both corporately and personally allowed her to bring extensive knowledge in marketing, education, fundraising, and event coordination to her new career.

Over the last 15+ years, Diane has held positions in Community Education with the OSPCA, St. John Ambulance Dog Therapy Program as a Dog Handler and Evaluator, plus various roles (including Board member) with Pugalug Pug Rescue. 

Diane’s passion for education has been fueled by her extensive involvement with the OSPCA Youth and Pets Program, Pet Ownership Responsibility, and collaboration with St John Ambulance Therapy Dog Bite Prevention Program. Her mission is to help future, current, and new dog owners have loving and fulfilling lifelong relationships with their dogs.

Diane’s skills are a perfect match for Muttz with Mannerz™. She collaborates with Corey on delivering educational seminars and support to pet parents and the community. February is National Dog Training Education Month and we want to share with you the Three D’s of Dog Training. Does your dog sit perfectly at home, but when you are at the pet store acts like it has never heard that command before? Does your dog know their basic commands at class but you are you struggling at home or in the park?

Karen Baxter, Dog Trainer and Behaviour Consultant

Karen Baxter has loved dogs all her life and feels privileged that she has the ideal job… following her life-long passion and working with dogs. Beginning her professional career with dogs over 20 years ago, Karen brings an experience and joy to her work that can be felt by each dog and dog owner that she works with regardless of the size or the breed of dog. Karen’s training philosophy is “one size does NOT fit all!” and true to the Unified K9 difference, tailors her training protocols and/or treatment plans to the needs of the dog and the lifestyle and goals of the dog’s owner. Her positive and fair techniques are designed to bring out enthusiasm in each dog so they learn to love training which results in building stronger relationships with their humans, based on trust. 

Karen has participated in various training programs over several years preparing for her career in dog training. She is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer having passed the Knowledge Assessment examination through the Certification Council for Professional Pet Dog Trainers.  She is a graduate of Animal Behaviour College’s Certified Dog Trainer program. Karen has also studied and completed training on the practical application of Behaviour Adjustment Training for fearful, anxious and aggressive dogs and Aggressive Dog Conflict Resolution with Behaviourist and author Cheryl Smith.Her most recent accomplishments include completing the Master Aggression Course with world renowned Behaviour Consultant and expert on dog aggression, Michael Shikashio and she is currently completing her diploma in Canine Behaviourology with a specialty in working with aggressive dogs Karen has also worked with local animal shelters and Rescue organizations to assist in the care and rehabilitation of rescued dogs who are usually suffering from trauma and stress related behaviour issues. Her continuing education and experience have ensured Karen has developed expertise in dog psychological issues manifesting themselves as anxiety or aggression.

Karen’s training specialties include Rally Obedience, Agility, Working Dogs Tracking, Scent work, and puppy foundations. She is a member of the International Association of Animal Behaviour Consultants, The Agility Association of Canada, the Canadian Association for Professional Dog Trainers and is certified in Pet First Aid and CPR.

Jesse’s love of animals started very young. She completed an Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Behaviour and began getting certified in various therapies after that. Not only is she dual-certified in Animal Iridology, but also in Animal Acupressure.

Jesse uses a combination of her therapies with her clients to better approach both physical and behavioral imbalances. The therapies are gentle and non-invasive, while allowing for dogs that are more nervous around people.

Karen has a diploma in Canine Science Technology and is a Licenced Canine Complexity Consultant as well as a Certified as a Dog Behaviour Consultant by the International association of Behaviour Consultants.  And she is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer. Karen has also studied and completed training on the practical application of Behaviour Adjustment Training for fearful, anxious and aggressive dogs and Aggressive Dog Conflict Resolution with Behaviourist and author Cheryl Smith and has completed the Master Aggression Course with world renowned Behaviour Consultant and expert on dog aggression, Michael Shikashio . Her continuing education and experience have ensured Karen has developed expertise in dog psychological issues manifesting themselves as anxiety or aggression.

Karen’s training specialties include Rally Obedience, Agility, Working Dogs Tracking, Scent work, and puppy foundations. She is a member of the International Association of Animal Behaviour Consultants, The Agility Association of Canada, the Canadian Association for Professional Dog Trainers and is certified in Pet First Aid and CPR.

Karen lives in York Region with her dogs most of which compete in obedience, agility and Rally Obedience. Her dogs have reached master level in all sports.

Diane has had a lifelong love of animals and knew at some point she would enter the world of Animal Welfare, specifically around Companion Animals. After a long career, Diane was able to leave the corporate world in 2004 and decided to immerse herself in dogs, animal welfare, and humane education. Her experience both corporately and personally allowed her to bring extensive knowledge in marketing, education, fundraising, and event coordination to her new career.

Karen Baxter has loved dogs all her life and feels privileged that she has the ideal job… following her life-long passion and working with dogs. Beginning her professional career with dogs over 20 years ago, Karen brings an experience and joy to her work that can be felt by each dog and dog owner that she works with regardless of the size or the breed of dog. Karen’s training philosophy is “one size does NOT fit all!” and true to the Unified K9 difference, tailors her training protocols and/or treatment plans to the needs of the dog and the lifestyle and goals of the dog’s owner. Karen has participated in various training programs over several years preparing for her career in dog training. She is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer having passed the Knowledge Assessment examination through the Certification Council for Professional Pet Dog Trainers.  She is a graduate of Animal Behaviour College’s Certified Dog Trainer program. Karen has also studied and completed training on the practical application of Behaviour Adjustment Training for fearful, anxious and aggressive dogs and Aggressive Dog Conflict Resolution with Behaviourist and author Cheryl Smith.Her most recent accomplishments include completing the Master Aggression Course with world renowned Behaviour Consultant and expert on dog aggression, Michael Shikashio and she is currently completing her diploma in Canine Behaviourology with a specialty in working with aggressive dogs Karen has also worked with local animal shelters and Rescue organizations to assist in the care and rehabilitation of rescued dogs who are usually suffering from trauma and stress related behaviour issues. Her continuing education and experience have ensured Karen has developed expertise in dog psychological issues manifesting themselves as anxiety or aggression.

Karen’s training specialties include Rally Obedience, Agility, Working Dogs Tracking, Scent work, and puppy foundations. She is a member of the International Association of Animal Behaviour Consultants, The Agility Association of Canada, the Canadian Association for Professional Dog Trainers and is certified in Pet First Aid and CPR.

Karen lives in York Region with her dogs most of which compete in obedience, agility and Rally Obedience. Her dogs have reached master level in all sports.

About Lorraine Houston

Even as a child Lorraine’s passion for dogs was evident but officially and professionally, she has 40 years “in dogs” when she began her career at the Toronto Humane Society in 1980. Throughout the years her experiences have included animal shelter work and management, Animal Control Officer, SPCA cruelty agent, dog trainer, Therapy Dog evaluator, newspaper columnist, seminar organizer, and host, animal advocacy Board member, Hurricane Katrina response team, canine behaviour training and assessments and dearest to her heart – dog rescue and fostering.

A three-time Maxwell award winner from the Dog Writers Association of America, Lorraine has penned numerous magazine and newspaper articles to raise awareness about the plight of homeless dogs, the puppy mill industry, and the rewards of positive, force-free, motivational dog training. She launched Speaking of Dogs Rescue in 2001 when an old friend from the Toronto Humane Society called her to come and meet a dog who was at Toronto Animal Services and would benefit from a foster-based rescue organization.

Jodi is a Registered Physiotherapist with 30 years of clinical experience.  She has been to the The Olympics and Pan American Games and owns a Physiotherapy Clinic in Uxbridge.  Due to her love of animals, Jodi has expanded her practice to include Canine Physio.Jodi has Advanced Canine Rehabilitation training through the Animal Rehab Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association.

Virtually every skill Jodi has used on humans can be applied to dogs. Jodi is highly trained in canine anatomy and rehabilitation and uses treatments and techniques that are specific to each dog. She performs a thorough physical exam of each dog and creates a unique plan that works for the owner and the dog. Jodi sees dogs in her Uxbridge home, or will travel to the owner’s home, making her mobile practice very accessible. The animal community, including veterinarians, are quickly learning about her services and she is excited to be able to provide the Uxbridge and surrounding communities with quality canine rehabilitation.

Corey founded Muttz with Mannerz in 2006. Her foundation of knowledge which includes being a Senior Manager, Dog Trainer, Vet Assistant, World Tour Lead, and Mental Performance Coach helped her to launch the Canine Academy. The purpose of the academy is to assist pet parents build the foundation for their pups to be with them for life. 

Corey believes in giving back to the community. Over many years she has volunteered at the Toronto Humane Society and the OSPCA and is also proud to be an evaluator for St. John Ambulance Dog Therapy Program. She held the position of Director of Communications on the board for the Canadian Association for Women Entrepreneurs and Executives from 2017-2019.  She has been active with Markham Fair and been a Team Captain and on the Executive for Stouffville Ladies Floor Hockey League for over 15 years. 

Corey has made Stouffville her home for the last 18 years and shares it with Mike, her partner, two stepdaughters, Karla and Alison, and their two energetic kittens, Dino and Demi. Over the years Corey has been fortunate to be blessed to share her life with 6 wonderful canines, Tilley (Miniature Dachshund), Tiny, Kira (Great Danes), Fred (Maltese), Charlie (Morkie), and Cleo (Miniature Poodle). Corey and Mike welcomed their new puppy, Skye, a rescue Muttz from Manitoba reserves into their home in June. 2021. They have big hopes for her and look forward to Skye filling their lives with joy and being an active member of Team Muttz. 

Diane Purser, Canine Educator

Diane has had a lifelong love of animals and knew at some point she would enter the world of Animal Welfare, specifically around Companion Animals. After a long career, Diane was able to leave the corporate world in 2004 and decided to immerse herself in dogs, animal welfare, and humane education. Her experience both corporately and personally allowed her to bring extensive knowledge in marketing, education, fundraising, and event coordination to her new career.

Over the last 15+ years, Diane has held positions in Community Education with the OSPCA, St. John Ambulance Dog Therapy Program as a Dog Handler and Evaluator, plus various roles (including Board member) with Pugalug Pug Rescue. 

Diane’s passion for education has been fueled by her extensive involvement with the OSPCA Youth and Pets Program, Pet Ownership Responsibility, and collaboration with St John Ambulance Therapy Dog Bite Prevention Program. Her mission is to help future, current, and new dog owners have loving and fulfilling lifelong relationships with their dogs.

Diane’s skills are a perfect match for Muttz with Mannerz™. She collaborates with Corey on delivering educational seminars and support to pet parents and the community. Her goal is to find dogs their forever homes and keep them there, ultimately lowering the number of unwanted dogs entering shelters and rescues.

Special Guest – Kelli Gilliss, ICG, Certified Professional Groomer
Kelli brings an extensive background of dog training and behavior management to her work as a Certified International Groomer and Canine Coach. She is a graduate of Sheridan College Animal Health and Sciences and continues her education in Advanced Canine Nutrition and the Canadian Association of Professional Pet Dog Trainers. Kelli currently holds the position of Chair on ODGA which stands for Ontario Dog Grooming Association. 

Her experience began in 1991 as a groomer and progressed to include multiple awards in the competitive grooming industry and titles in dog obedience. Her passion lends its expertise to handling difficult to manage animals in both her grooming and training platforms. She worked as an “in clinic” trained veterinary technician since 1998 and Kelli now explores and practices holistic veterinary care. 

Kelli keeps a happy home with her two Australian Shepherds, furpups Maui, 10 ½ yrs and Crue 2 years old, her two children, Ella and Owen, and her husband, Steve.

Karen is the owner and head Behaviour Consultant at Unified K9 Behaviour Centre which she founded in 2022. Karen has also studied and completed training on the practical application of Behaviour Adjustment Training for fearful, anxious and aggressive dogs and Aggressive Dog Conflict Resolution with Behaviourist and author Cheryl Smith and has completed the Master Aggression Course with world renowned Behaviour Consultant and expert on dog aggression, Michael Shikashio . Her continuing education and experience have ensured Karen has developed expertise in dog psychological issues manifesting themselves as anxiety or aggression.

Karen’s training specialties include Rally Obedience, Agility, Working Dogs Tracking, Scent work, and puppy foundations. She is a member of the International Association of Animal Behaviour Consultants, The Agility Association of Canada, the Canadian Association for Professional Dog Trainers and is certified in Pet First Aid and CPR.

Karen lives in York Region with her dogs most of which compete in obedience, agility and Rally Obedience. Her dogs have reached master level in all sports.

Nancy is a member of The Canadian Association of Professional Dog Trainers (CAPDT), the Agility Association of Canada (AAC), the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC), Canine Performance Events (CPE), and Canine Hoopers of Canada (CHC).  She has volunteered with the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program since 2011 and is a Provincial Therapy Dog Evaluator Trainer and a Therapy Dog Evaluator in York Region.

Dr. Brooke grew up in a small rural community in Southwestern Ontario, with a house full of four-legged family members. From a very young age, she had an immense love of all animals and aspired to one day work with them. 

She attended Dalhousie University for her undergraduate studies in Biology and Business, with the goal of becoming a veterinarian. While volunteering at countless vet clinics, the SPCA, and other animal shelters - she realized that it wasn’t the path for her. 

After becoming inspired by an Anatomy Professor (a local Chiropractor), she discovered Animal Chiropractic while discussing alternative options to help her Golden Retriever, Max, regain strength in his hind end. She immediately applied to the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) with a new goal in sight. 

While completing her clinical internship at St. Michael’s Hospital, Dr. Brooke had the privilege of being one of two students accepted into the Veterinary Chiropractic Learning Centre’s Animal Chiropractic course. Kelli brings an extensive background in dog training and behavior management to her work as a Certified International Groomer and Canine Coach. She is a graduate of Sheridan College Animal Health and Sciences and continues her education in Advanced Canine Nutrition and the Canadian Association of Professional Pet Dog Trainers. Kelli currently holds the position of Chair on ODGA which stands for Ontario Dog Grooming Association. 

Kelli’s experience began in 1991 as a groomer and progressed to include multiple awards in the competitive grooming industry and titles in dog obedience. She started training and competing in obedience and agility in 1994, as well as performing with an animal actor touring group. She has titled multiple dogs in conformation, obedience, Rally-O, agility, disc dog, herding and tracking. Kelli’s passion lends its expertise to handling difficult to manage animals in both her grooming and training platforms. She worked as an “in clinic” trained veterinary technician since 1998 and she now explores and practices holistic veterinary care. 

Kelli keeps a happy home with her two Australian Shepherds, furpups Maui, 10 ½ yrs and Crue 2 years old, her two children, Ella and Owen, and her husband, Steve.

Sue has been working in shelters and as a dog trainer since 1981. Sue was the 2016 recipient of the APDT's Lifetime Achievement Award. She founded the shelter featured in the HBO documentary: Shelter Dogs. Her over 40 years of canine behavior experience includes as a dog control officer, behavior consultant at the ASPCA, shelter owner, successful competitor in a variety of dog sports (with Nose Work being her current wild favorite) and a teacher of dog trainers world-wide. She believes in giving back to the community and over many years has volunteered at the Toronto Humane Society and the OSPCA. Currently, she is active with Markham Fair, and Stouffville Ladies Floor Hockey League, and was proud to be an evaluator for St. John Ambulance Dog Therapy Program. She also held the position of Director of Communications on the Canadian Association for Women Entrepreneurs and Executives.

Corey has made Stouffville her home for the last 18 years and shares it with Mike, her partner, two step-daughters, Karla and Alison, Skye, her 2-year-old Manitoba Mutt, plus her two energetic kittens, Dino and Demi. She stays active with her two businesses and when not with the canines or family she loves playing floor hockey with the ladies or golfing with Mike.
