31: As long as you have done these things, you’ll have a successful move abroad. 27 Nov 202300:12:30

Choosing the right location when moving abroad is a significant decision, so it's natural to have concerns about making the “wrong choice.” But, it's also important to remember that there's no one-size-fits-all answer, and what may be the perfect location for one person might not be the best for another.

But, I truly believe that if you can do 4 essential things, you can rest assured that you'll have a good move abroad no matter where you decide to go. The three things are:

  • 1: You will need some way of making income.
  • 2: You will need a visa.
  • 3: You will need somewhere to live.

27: Do you want to start your own business abroad? Start here.  30 Oct 202300:14:44

I think there is a biiiiig difference between moving abroad to start a local restaurant versus moving abroad as a freelancer with an existing roster of freelance clients. In one situation, you’re going to face a few more obstacles (AKA building a local business) and in another situation, you’re going to face less obstacles. So, throughout this podcast episode, we’ll talk about some of the aspects to consider if you are an entrepreneur, freelancer, self-employed, or contractor. If you are a freelancer, contractor, self-employed, entrepreneur, or you want to become one, here's a list of countries offering relevant visas that you can access at jordangiberson.com/remote.

But the moral of the story is that if you are building a business in the country you are moving to, you might face some additional challenges that somebody with a digital focused business might face. Here are the topics we'll cover:

  • Cultural Differences
  • Language Barrier
  • Legal and Regulatory Challenges
  • Market Differences
  • Access to Resources
  • Networking and Relationships
  • Risk and Uncertainty
  • Opportunity and Growth
  • Cultural Enrichment
  • Personal Growth

I’ve been abroad for 4 years now. And over these 4 years, I have do doubt had periods of loneliness. But I’ve also had periods of time where I’ll meet somebody new who is AWESOME, but I’m like, “Yeah, you’re super cool and all and I think we’d get on well, but the roster is full. I have enough friends right now and I just don’t have the capacity to invest in any more friendships.” But I think sometimes friendships ebb and flow. Sometimes people enter our lives for a short period of time. But sometimes we are lucky enough to meet our soulmate best friends for life. More than likely, when you move abroad you will probably need to build some new friendships. So let’s take some time talking about what the different causes of loneliness are and how to combat these when you move abroad!

I this episode, we'll cover:

  • Finding local social support

23: Which visa do you need to move abroad? 02 Oct 202300:21:06

Ah, visas... this is what I like to call our "hall pass" for being able to live in another country. In this episode of the Move Abroad podcast, we'll be covering the different types of visas you will be most likely to get if you move abroad and a bit of what the process looks like for each.

First steps to move abroad:

  1. Decide what country you want to move to
  2. See what types of visas that country offers and learn about the qualifications you need in order to get that visa

Main visa categories:

Working visa:

(this is the only visa where you might not have to pay for it)

  • Normal job visa: If you have an employer, this visa is for you (calling all nine-to-fivers!). For this visa, a company will 'sponsor' you which basically just means a company gives you a work contract which you use to apply for the visa.
  • Nanny/Au Pair: If you want to work as a nanny in another country, you can become an Au Pair (or Nanny).
  • Teaching abroad visa: If you want to teach abroad (specifically English), there are many programs that can help you along this process.
  • Internship abroad: If you want to do an internship abroad, there are companies that can help you along this process.

Entrepreneur visa: Do you want to start a business abroad? This visa is for you.

Digital nomad visa: Some countries offer digital nomad visas where you are allowed to live and work digitally (and legally) in a country.

Student visa: A student visa allows you to live in a foreign country while you pursue a degree at a university, and you can usually work 20 hours per week while you study.

Tourist visa: Some people work remotely in foreign countries on a normal tourist visa (which you are automatically on when immigration officers stamp your passport) without getting working visas.

Investment visa: If you have $200,000 to $2,000,000 available cash to invest, you can get an investment visa (commonly called the golden visa).

Ancestry visa: If your parents or grandparents were born in the country you want to move to, you maybe be able to get a visa in this country.

While different European countries have different types of visas and different rules for each, most countries have quite similar visas that fall into these categories below. Listen to this podcast episode to learn more.

20: If you accomplish these 3 steps, you are so much closer to moving abroad than you think11 Sep 202300:14:16

If you're considering moving abroad to Europe, we'll be discussing the practical first three steps you should take to start the process:

1. Research and Choose Your Destination:

  • Begin by researching European countries and cities that align with your preferences, goals, and priorities. Consider factors such as language, job opportunities, cost of living, lifestyle, climate, and cultural compatibility.
  • Narrow down your options to a few potential destinations that resonate with you.

2. Understand Visa and Residency Requirements:

  • Once you've identified potential destinations, research the visa and residency requirements for each country. Each country has its own rules and regulations for foreigners moving in.
  • Determine the type of visa you might need based on your purpose of moving (work, study, family, retirement, etc.).
  • Familiarize yourself with the application process, required documents, and any financial or health-related criteria.

3. Create a Financial Plan:

  • Assess your financial situation and create a budget for your move. Consider expenses such as visa fees, travel costs, accommodation, initial living expenses, and potential emergencies.
  • Research the cost of living in your chosen destination to ensure your financial preparedness.
  • Explore job prospects and potential income sources in your destination country.

By completing these three initial steps, you'll set a solid foundation for your move and start the process of turning your dream of moving to Europe into a practical plan.

8: 10 Ways you will change when you move abroad19 Jun 202300:23:09

Does anybody remember being in middle school and high school and some people would sign it ‘HAGS’ AKA have a great summer with their signature they practiced 100 times in their notebook earlier that week, some people would write a heart felt essay in detail about how important your friendship is and the funny memories from the year (cough me) and then there were the people that would say something like ‘You’re so great, never change’. As I was thinking about this podcast episode, I was thinking about people telling you ‘you’re so great, don’t change’ but when you move abroad you will change, but not for the bad. You just become a better version of who you are. But that’s what any change will do to you really - getting married, having kids, starting a business, training for a marathon.

Challenges make us stronger, better versions of who we already were. So without further adou, here are the 10 ways I have changed since I moved abroad.
