Bucks in Six: Lessons in marketing, leadership and life from the championship run29 Jul 202100:39:24

I’m still in shock that the Milwaukee Bucks won the NBA title. The odds are stacked so far against a small market team from the Midwest to win a title, especially in the era of superteams and star player mobility.

As a lifelong fan, I’m so happy for the city and the Bucks organization — that was amazing to watch from a basketball standpoint. But what about from a life and business perspective?

Chris Luecke (Host of the Manufacturing Happy Hour podcast) and I decided to come together and talk about the top leadership, marketing, and life lessons we took away from the Bucks championship run. Listen in as we take a deep dive and unpack what we've learned.

MKE Entrepreneur Exits Brand For $20.6M During Covid: Josh Delaney’s Road Back To Milwaukee13 Jul 202100:33:20

Josh Delaney has made local and national news lately by selling 80% of his company, FAB Nutrition to High Tide Inc for $20.6M. Josh started FAB Nutrition only three years ago and the fact that he just cashed out for over $20M at age 35 is rare. It’s the largest exit I personally know of by a young(ish) Milwaukee entrepreneur. That said it is far from an overnight success story.

The Story of Pete’s Pops: From serving pops in his kitchen to one of MKE’s favorite brands 06 Jul 202100:30:09

Pete’s Pops has been all over the news (and streets of the Milwaukee area) this year. With the announcement of “Sneaky Pete’s” recently opening at the Milwaukee Public Market, their four brick-and-mortar locations, fifteen pop carts roaming around the area, and their expansion last year to St. Louis (Pete’s hometown) last year, it’s clear that business has never been hotter – erm — chillier — for this Milwaukee-favorite pop shop. All that said, Pete’s Pops is far from an overnight success story.

Believe it or not, I was one of the first to try these legendary pops. Pete Cooney served me one of the original Pete’s Pops out of a dixie cup in the kitchen of his East Side apartment about eight years ago, back when he was a full-time corporate accountant. Pete’s Pops was a side hustle for Pete until the start of 2021, his last job being the Controller for the Pabst Group.

Although Pete’s Pops has grown significantly since Pete started making Pops, his passion and excitement for the business haven’t gone away:

“Something about this concept resonated with me; it made me excited, it made me happy... Our business is happiness and positivity, it’s just a really great business, and I’m thankful it’s what I chose,” Pete said fondly on this episode of The GoGedders.

For the company’s future, Pete predicts an expansion of the current business model and a potential consumer packaged goods (CPG) play down the road.

For more on Pete’s story and what it took to get the business to where it is today, listen in to the full episode.

Currently battling cancer, EUA President, Rich Tennessen stays positive and makes progress (An update with Rich and Dr Hari) 16 Jun 202100:31:28

Like clockwork every Wednesday morning through chemo and during his three-week hospital stay where he underwent CAR T Cell therapy, he fired off a group text that I was fortunate enough to be a part of. It featured a message from Rich as well as a song of the day. On April 14th at 6:37am, on his 13th day in the hospital, he sent off the following message:

“I look out my window and see Children’s Hospital and two flight for life helipads. I wonder about everyone’s stories and the randomness of it all. We all have a clock, but it’s not until you experience a life changing event that you become more acutely aware of how you spend your time. My hope for everyone is that we all take time to appreciate that each day is a gift and we make the most of life, because none of us truly know how much time is left on our clock.”

On the podcast, I asked him to elaborate on this message and how he has chosen to remain positive through his journey with cancer, while the rest of us continue to get stressed out and anxious about minute details and events of day-to-day life that really have no meaningful impact. He responded to my question by saying, “I’m thankful. Not that I got the disease, but that I’ve got time. It changes the way you react to certain things. Something changes where you appreciate everything, and you appreciate the little things more. I feel fortunate, I don’t know how much time I have, but I do have time. Some people get (life) taken away from them in an instant or in a few months. None of us know when it’s going to be over, so we should really all have that attitude. Sometimes you look at life, and you’re like ‘where did that time go’ most of the time, we just go through the day and don’t appreciate the day."

Luckily for Rich, along with his positive attitude, he is in great hands with Dr. Parmeswarn Hari at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Hari is rated one of the top doctors in America and started the Celgene bb2121 Car T Cell Clinical Trial right here in Milwaukee. Rich is only the sixth person in the world to get it. Essentially the treatment takes patient’s T cells that are ineffective to treat myeloma and reprograms them genetically to convert the cells into supercharged, highly efficient T cells that can target and destroy every last myeloma cell. Approximately 450M cells were pumped into Rich’s body. It’s living cell therapy, and Dr. Hari is optimistic that many cancers will be cured this way in the next 20-25 years; right now, only three cancers can get treated like this.

Dr. Hari and Rich both advise that if you think something is wrong with you, see a doctor as soon as possible as many of us procrastinate and wait until later stages to get looked at, and our health is the most important thing we have.

Grant Pauly: The Man Behind WI's Fastest Growing Brewery - 3 Sheeps 29 Oct 202400:38:29

What started out as a small operation in Sheboygan in 2012 will now produce 14,000 barrels of beer (that is 4.6 MILLION cans) this year, making it the 4th largest craft brewery in the state.

The story behind this rising Wisconsin company is pretty remarkable.

Grant Pauly, a Wisconsin native, who spent time at Google out of college, then homebrewed on the side while working at his family’s business before deciding to break off on his own.

Growth hasn’t come without roadblocks and risks but in a craft beer industry that has become overly saturated and in decline 3 Sheeps has been able to break through the clutter and experience double digit growth year over year.

How have they done it? What does the future look like for the industry and for 3 Sheeps?

Listen to this awesome Wisconsin Business story to find out.

And why are people pointing the COVID-finger at them?

These events have led many of us to wonder -- does the stock market accurately represent the market and its trends? Or is it just a mirage?

We are joined on this episode of The GoGedders Podcast by CJ Krawczyk, a partner at Kravit, Hovel & Krawczyk and a securities litigator, as well as Joe Taylor, founder of Penrod, where he made the inc 500 and won best place to work 3x in a row in Wisconsin. Milwaukee exec battling cancer, Rich Tennessen, chooses positivity and shares lessons learned28 Jan 202100:27:08

While working at home after getting blood work done the week after Thanksgiving, Rich was napping on his basement floor  due to fatigue at 4:30PM. Forty-five minutes later, he woke up to his phone going off-- it was his doctor, “You need to go to the hospital right now.” The next day after getting transfusions, Rich was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. He then heard the word “cancer”.

Following our episode about Dry January (listen to the episode here→ http://bit.ly/3pnvq3Z), my friend, Rich Tennessen, reached out to me about how he appreciated my openness in sharing my love-hate story with alcohol.  He let me know that this year he was participating in “Dry January”, but not by choice, and he let me know about his recent diagnosis; he was battling cancer and wanted to come on the podcast to share his story while also putting out a PSA to anyone who might be experiencing symptoms to get checked ASAP!

Going into 2020, the stars were aligned for the city of Milwaukee to shine in the national spotlight. Highly anticipated events like the DNC, Ryder Cup, Summerfest, a long Bucks playoff run, and more were all on the horizon. Then, the pandemic hit and it changed everything. Instead of experiencing an economic boom, local businesses had to picot and adapt to survive. Additionally, we saw a prevalent BLM movement in the city of Milwaukee, where protests lasted for weeks in light of the George Floyd tragedy. We went through the most polarizing election of all time, but on the bright side, the Hoan Bridge finally got lit and, just this week, Giannis signed his extension, ending the year on a positive note and leaving the city feeling good about its future! I've been lucky to cover all of these topics on the GoGedders and in this episode we look back on everything that unfolded. Guests in this episode include: DJ Hines, Christine Specht, Ian Abston, Khalif El-Amin, Judge Derek Mosley, John Burke, Mike Malatesta, Michael Hostad and Greg Marshall.

What’s going on in the financial markets right now with Jim Popp of Johnson Financial 10 Sep 202000:29:45

As we all know, there’s a lot of uncertainty in the financial markets right now, and that raises a lot of questions. Is another stimulus package coming? How can the markets be at an all time high despite businesses struggling and unemployment staying at more than double the typical rate? And, of course: How will the November election affect the financial climate?

Like many small business owners, I had several questions of my own. What’s the right way to approach the initial process surrounding PPP loans? Will there be loan forgiveness, and is there going to be another wave?

Luckily for us, Jim Popp, CEO of Johnson Financial, came on our most recent episode of the GoGedders podcast to answer the questions above and offer expertise on more financial topics. You’ll learn a lot about what’s happening behind the scenes of the financial industry during COVID, and the info Jim provides is useful for just about anyone.

Why entrepreneurs and creatives suffer from mental health at alarming rates and what we can do better. Richie Burke on YGTV. 27 Aug 202000:32:28

A lot of us are struggling with mental health especially with all that is going on right now and all the uncertainty it brings.

For entrepreneurs (and a lot of creatives) it's especially bad, there was a study done by Michael Freeman in 2015 that came out with the following results. Founders are:

2x more likely to suffer from depression

6x more likely to suffer from ADHD

3x more likely to suffer from substance abuse

10x more likely to suffer from bi-polar disorder

2x more likely to have psychiatric hospitalization

2x more likely to have suicidal thoughts

And when you look into what running a business is it makes a lot of sense. It's difficult and it's stressful with high rates of failure and a lot of uncertainty and rejection to deal with along the way. That said it is very rewarding and I wouldn't change it. We just need to do a much better job taking care of ourselves.

As a lot of you know I had a bad panic attack about 3 years ago that has caused a bunch of lingering anxiety issues that I never had to deal with before. It's been difficult but forced me to make positive changes for the better.

In this talk I go deep into my story as well as Chuck Swoboda's (Former CEO of Cree Lighting) story who went through something even more extreme, talk about the relationship with entrepreneurship and anxiety and what we can do to make it better.

For anyone dealing with mental health issues please watch and if you know someone who could benefit pass this along.

Operation Finally Home with David Bellman and First Federal Bank 07 Aug 202000:26:04

Our military veterans give us so much, selflessly volunteering their precious time, energy, and strength to serve our country. Yet, when they return home from service, they’re often left feeling underappreciated and have to face difficult hardships. Reassimilating into normal life can be tough — whether it’s finding a fulfilling career, coping with PTSD, or just readjusting their state of mind, veterans and their families often feel like they’re going about it alone.

That’s where Operation Finally Home (OFH) comes in. Operation Finally Home is a program that provides custom-built homes for veterans and their families, giving that home to them mortgage-free. The program was specifically created for veterans who had their time in service cut short because of injury. This uplifting gift to our heroes and their families is a fantastic way to show that they’re truly cared for when they return home.
