| 297. Grace Niu - A deeper dive into Feng Shui for health | 21 Aug 2022 | 01:32:24 | |
This week I have Grace Nui back on the show to dive deeper into Feng Shui and Eastern principles of wellbeing. On an 80minute exploration we dive into the idea that our body is our bodyguard, and how sometimes constant vigilance is an invitation to explore a deeper need for healing. We also talk about chronic presentations, the home, bust myths that everything needs to be a ‘certain facing’ direction for a happy, wealthy, healthy life and look at how we’re being impacted by the stages the world are in and moving to right now, energetically. It’s a fascinating deep dive and show that really helps us make sense of things on not just an individual level but as a collective in the world right now. | 296. Long Covid: What we know is helping, with Naturopath, Carla Wrenn | 14 Aug 2022 | 01:28:56
Long Covid. Do you or someone you know still have covid after effects lingering on to varying degrees? Today’s show is for you. With this amount of people experiencing issues - some debilitating - it’s impossible for us to ignore anything that’s proving to be helpful, regardless of our area of training or thinking and I believe it’s holistic health’s time to shine as a true parter to crisis care and come to the rescue. Many of us who’ve had mosquito-borne viruses, biotoxin poisoning, tick borne illness and other often chronic and complicated multi-system conditions are no stranger to long lasting effects of certain exposures and infections. Never in our lifetime though, have hundreds of millions of people caught a virus within the time frame of a couple of years, with the therefore much higher influx within a period of time, of people chronically affected in the aftermath, and so, I have hope that the light will be shone for all who’ve experienced chronic post-viral/exposure issues for decades with little support. Us chronic peeps have often eventually - if privileged enough with the access and means - been driven to explore eastern medicine, naturopathy, chiropractic, homeopathy and more to find ways to improve symptoms and heal, when labs return more or less ‘normal’ and conventional drugs don’t work so we know how many tools can be in the ‘get well kit’ and I’d dearly love for everyone to know how many tools can be in your kit if you do have long covid - don’t lose hope. Many conventional doctors are so heavily regulated that they can’t discuss other options even if you want to so there’s a real opportunity for partnership between types of health professionals here. I have brought us the wonderful Naturopath, Carla Wrenn, specialised in chronic illness and oncology, to discuss the research at the forefront of long covid in the ‘out of the box’ treatment world of holistic healing and nutraceutical support. This show is so needed and I feel grateful to be able to get this information out to the many experiencing issues and debilitating symptoms. Share it far and wide. I hope it’s as helpful a show as I feel it will be and you can head to the show notes for more details over at lowtoxlife.com/podcast See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. | 295. What makes a healthy building? The building, the materials, the maintenance - it all matters, with Andrew Pace | 07 Aug 2022 | 01:19:46
Care about the health of your home’s indoor air? Sensitive to a variety of chemicals and need to look at what’s happening in your home? We think about home fragrance, mold and our cleaning products but how about how long a kitchen cabinet takes to off-gas or just how low VOC that paint really is- Ah, it never ends, does it? This week to help us NOT freak out about building materials and get so many valuable tips about choosing a home if you’re renting through to choosing materials if you’re building or renovating, Andy Pace is the perfect guide through it all. Andrew Pace is a Healthy Home Concierge and Founder of The Green Design Center, a leading resource for homeowners and contractors looking to source products that are healthy and green and receive expert consulting advice on designing and building healthy green homes. | 294. The keys to a healthy pelvic floor with Dr. Danielle Bailey | 31 Jul 2022 | 00:58:28
When you think ‘Pelvic floor’ most people either think of women who’ve just given birth or elderly people, but having an unstable pelvic floor can affect us all - that’s including men, so I’ve invited a wonderful physical therapist, Dr Danielle Bailey, who helps thousands in her practice and online, get their pelvic floor in shape and transform all sorts of symptoms that aren’t just about peeing when you don’t want to - although that part is, of course, the biggest reason to get excited - even laugh and cry or sneeze, and be relaxed about it. Right? Danielle is a physical therapist and functional medicine practitioner in Plano Texas, USA, specializing in pelvic floor physical therapy. She supports women and men who experience pelvic floor dysfunction, such as urinary leakage, tailbone pain, frequent restroom breaks, pain with intercourse, and constipation. She also helps women who experience discomfort during pregnancy and postpartum. Danielle works closely with clients to help them discover the root cause of their challenging health issues. | 292. Localization as an antidote to polarization with Helena Norberg-Hodge | 17 Jul 2022 | 01:11:47
This week I am sharing a powerful show with thought leader and localisation champion, Helena Norberg-Hodge. I have invited Helena back, given it’s just been World Re-Localisation-Day, to discuss the practicality, possibility and benefits of localising economies, and to tackle the big topics today such as polarisation as a profit-making reality that keeps us from holding big industry accountable and changing the system that’s causing further and further economic divide and despair world wide - it’s a show to make you THINK rather than perpetuate the ‘what team are you on’ arguments we all seem forced into today. Polarisation is the enemy of true progress and today’s show focuses on the benefits of what true progress are. Can’t wait to hear what you think. | 291. Dr. Nicole Beurkens - Raising kids in 2022 to be healthy, and mentally resilient and why grey-area thinking matters. | 10 Jul 2022 | 01:20:59
What are some of the biggest factors that affect the health of our children today? How is growing up in a polarised black and white world affecting our kids? What happens to our kids if they are raised in a way that doesn’t factor in an understanding of differences in people, politics and life choices? Today I invite Dr Nicole Beurkens, a triple advance degreed psychologist, educator and nutritionist to help us unpack raising kids in today’s ever polarised world and how we can support them to investigate the complexity of various global and local issues as well as how that feeds into greater resilience and peace. We also discuss some of the biggest things that move the needle for children’s health. It’s a powerful show and I hope you appreciate it as much as I did. | 290. Bill Giles on finding your signature diet (and how that in turn supports your immune system) | 03 Jul 2022 | 01:47:44
In the coming weeks we’re going to be looking at the Immune System with a few practitioners and specialists in this space - Dr Gary Kaplan’s show from last month was wonderful to kick things off. Today, I interview Bill Giles, Immunobiologist, Hypnotherapist, Yoga Teacher and more, with over 3 decades of clinical experience supporting and optimising people’s immune function. Bill was a pioneer advocating for grain-free diets in the early 90s, co founding the world’s first grain-free bakery and we talk about grains in today’s episode. We explore different foods and their effects on the immune system, from plants to animal proteins, fats and fish. We look at why fructose is such a harmful sugar but not necessarily to all people and look at how one might go about finding their signature diet for optimal health and immune function. It’s a fascinating show that has me wanting to ask more questions, so Bill will be a masterclass guest in our member’s club which you can join here: https://www.lowtoxlife.com/the-low-tox-club/ and be a part of or catch the replay and the many other member-only resources we share, there. | 289. Shanya Suppasiritad - On how fashion can be exciting AND sustainable. | 26 Jun 2022 | 00:47:29
This week I interview Shanya Suppasiritad, a serial entrepreneur, recipient of the first TWOGOOD grant and founder of RNTR. Imagine if you could rent your favourite brands in capsule collections to wear for 2 weeks or 4 and then you returned them or the next person to enjoy and for them to find their way into a closed-loop recycling system at the end of their life, to become new clothes. This is what RNTR makes possible and I know you’ll enjoy learning more about fashion, textiles, and slowing fast fashion down while creating new jobs… it’s got a little of everything if you’re a fan of clothes but want to do better by the planet in the process. | 288. Water Damage, ERMI testing, and all things mould with Michael Rubino, the Mold Medic | 19 Jun 2022 | 01:40:35
This week we are talking about water-damaged buildings, mould, ERMI testing, remediation and what some of the tell tale signs are for water damage as well as some of the best ways to build to avoid it. My expert joining me on the show is Michael Robino, President of All American Restoration and a mold remediator with much experience working with families severely affected by mold. Michael's passion extends beyond remediating homes, as he has now put the wheels in motion advocating for the right to clean air and a tightening up of building codes, materials used and waterproofing techniques to ensure healthier homes in the future and a greater level of rights for people experiencing issues now. On today's show, Michael also takes us through 2 of my past ERMI test results, pointing out various aspects of the reports that show alarm bells for mold-sensitive people living there. If you want to watch that part of it, I've included it as a video section over in the show notes. I hope this show supports you if water damage has been something you're grappling with and if you want more on mould, head to the show notes over at lowtoxlife.com/podcast and click on today's show, to find a post link where I've listed all of the resources we've shared over the years on mold, mold illness, water damage and healing. Immune support and health and tips and tricks to boost ourselves this time of year with changing seasons, is common and normal to be chatting about, and of course, often very helpful. BUT. I knew when I invited my dear friend and wise sage, Shalani McCray @livealivehq who is a naturopathic nutritionist, practitioner of many years, an EFT, MAPS and GAPS practitioner, an herbalist and an ordained interfaith minister… that we wouldn’t just be talking about garlic soaked socks and vitamin D capsules, but about fundamental common sense inputs for being WELL and robust and having the vitality to withstand common lurgies for the most part in the first place. We talk about:

| 286. Josette Tkacik - A story of determination and selfhealing | 05 Jun 2022 | 00:54:09 | |
Ever grappled with a chronic illness or diagnosis and felt sure that you could do much more than what was being recommended? I have as has this week's guest, ex-professional dancer, medical miracle and famed Zumba Instructor Josette Tkacik. This week's show isn't filled with healing protocols or step by steps for how to heal rheumatoid arthritis, which put her in crippling pain and had her staring at a lifetime of multiple medications in her early 30s. Josette fully reversed her illness and was declared a medical miracle, but acknowledges everyone's journey is different. This show is more about sharing a story of hope and looking at what some of the things might be in our lives that aren't serving us so that we can create change before a crisis. Josette's story of disordered eating as a professional ballet dancer, through to being an overworked lawyer, through to being someone who took illness as a chance to walk through a new door and inspire thousands is uplifting and affirms the fact that if we're truly going to heal, a deep, spiritual and energetic evaluation must happen alongside any practical levers we pull through medication, supplements and diet. As always, this is not medical advice and please don't change anything without the guidance of your trusted practitioner(s). | 285. Hair accessories get a planet-friendly makeover | 29 May 2022 | 00:52:06
I don't know about you but up until about 5 years ago, I never once thought “Gee, I wonder how much damage my hair tie is doing?” and yet, I had written extensively by that time about all sorts of everyday household items and the damage they did and what we could choose instead. It just goes to show, we only know what we know when we know it and today, we're going to talk about hair ties, scrunchies, headbands and look under the hood of Koosho0 - including learning what the name means. It's a lovely chat with founders Rachel Evans and Jesse Schiller about plastic waste, Island life without recycling capabilities, and the many things you have to think about when building a truly sustainable brand. | 284. Discovered Wildfoods - wild game for healthier people and planet? | 22 May 2022 | 01:13:11
Firstly, as with all shows we've done on food - I'm not here to tell you what to eat. I'll leave that to the doctors to guide you through, but what I am passionate about, is guiding big picture, grey area thinking in this polarised world trying to oversimplify things in black and white narratives which we all end up fighting each other over. No thanks. Not productive and I truly believe there's room for every type of eater to do better for their health and our planet and animals - whether you eat animals or not. To that end, this week we're talking about the impact of wild animals on the landscape - both the wild, native landscape and the farms where food is grown and ask: Could this be the most ethical, environmental meat solution yet? During the pandemic, Billy Staughton & Tara Medina (Discovered Wildfoods) launched their brand of wild-harvested Sambar venison. Coming from diverse backgrounds in events, music festivals, bars, management consulting and even stints as a jackeroo, a wild game near business seemed the logical next step. It posed many challenges but after years of getting the supply chain right, they've not only found a solution to help restore pristine native habitats being threatened by invasive wild game but deliver an ethically harvested, incredibly nutritious meat to Australians. Every now and then I learn something completely and excitingly new after 8 years of interviewing people and today I learnt more about the audio neural pathways (ie the link between our ear function, brain and nervous system) from our guest, Rafaele Joudry. Rafaele has dedicated her life to helping people overcome auditory problems and enhance their lives through better ear and brain health. She pioneered the first portable Sound Therapy program after discovering how the program could benefit her mother's hearing difficulties. Sound Therapy International has treated many thousands of clients for conditions such as autism, stroke, brain injury, insomnia, Parkinson's, tinnitus, depression, Alzheimer's, and many other conditions using the Tomatis method of sound therapy that is - stimulation of the brain using high-frequency sound to repair the audio-neural pathways. In today's show, we discuss the musculoskeletal system and how it interacts with lymphatics and blood flow and look at repeat patterns of habit in posture and movement, the impact of tech devices and what to do about it - as I type this I'm adjusting my posture and uncrossing my legs - I've discovered repeat patters of habit and I'm sure you will too after today's show. | 280. Holistic healing of people and planet with Biodynamics farmer, David McFall | 24 Apr 2022 | 01:37:30
“She shied away from talking about the neighbours saying they were unfortunately no longer on good terms,” David asked her what happened and eventually she shared that the neighbour had flown a pesticide spraying plane over by their property one day and the next, she miscarried. How to feel hope? Enter today's guest, David McFall, a biodynamic farmer from Western Australia. Interviewing a farmer is always a feel-good experience on the show because they're always farmers working with regenerative methods, leaving the landscape better and better, more biodiverse, sequestering more carbon and developing healthier and healthier water systems with each passing year. | 278. Are physical symptoms an invitation to explore how to get back to homeostasis? Dr John Demartini helps us unpack it. | 10 Apr 2022 | 01:06:10
Dr John Demartini is back on the show, and once again challenging our thinking and perception to the core - this time on the subject of ‘wellness'. As you listen, please know that this is NOT about throwing out the Epipen and antihistamines or ditching your gut healing protocol today, but it's about simply being curious about our state of mind, raising our awareness of homeostasis within ourselves and what mental things - perceived or real, might be at play that is manifesting as symptoms in the body. Speak with your doctor before making any changes to medication. It's a fascinating hour as John delves into the science that demonstrates just how much our mind affects our body, as many more teachers, scientists and doctors are starting to realise today. | 385. Exploring the lack of progress on biodiversity and conservation with author of “Wild Quests”, Satyajit Das | 09 Jun 2024 | 01:19:00
This podcast is a big exploration of several important topics of our times (Das hates the word ‘conversation’ and shares why in the show)
Das isn’t here to give people comfortable ‘off ramps’ and this was definitely a thought provoking hour exploring things we’re all often thinking about, also often despairing over the state of, and yet never moving forward and we aim to light a fire or remind us to find our overlaps and common ways to move forward. | 277. Neuroinflammation and mental health with Brendan Vermeire | 03 Apr 2022 | 01:19:02
On this week's show, I have the wonderful Brendan Vermeire, aka the Holistic Savage, on the show to talk about his passion for mental health. We are talking about neuroinflammation specifically and a variety of root causes - including a modern life of less resistance building and then we move through to interventions to support the healing of the body as well as the building of resilience. Clue: Many of them are painfully simple! Brendan is a Mental and Metabolic Health Scientist & Researcher, Functional Medicine Educator, Writer, and Speaker. He is a Board-Certified Holistic Health Practitioner, Master Nutrition Coach, Master Personal Trainer, USAW Sports Performance Coach, and Crossfit Trainer. He began his career as a personal trainer and nutrition coach at the age of 18 after disappointingly being medically discharged from the United States Navy Seal training pipeline due to an injury. After being exposed to the power of functional lab testing in the start of his career, he began intensely pursuing that as a career path which has led him to be widely regarded as one of the top leading experts in Metabolic Health and Functional Education. He is the proud owner and founder of the Metabolic Solutions Institute for Functional Health and Fitness Practitioners, and the Metabolic Solutions Research & Education Foundation, a not-for-profit foundation dedicated to ‘changing the way the world views mental health' through advancing the science of Mental Health Dysfunction. He is also the creator of The Mental M.A.P.TM, a cutting-edge Lab Panel for Mental Health. When he's not educating doctors/practitioners/professionals, helping clients overcome their most severe health struggles, or producing cutting edge scientific education, Brendan enjoys all things fitness and is probably working out. He also enjoys anything in nature and any activities that expand his heart, mind, and soul. | 275. What practising simplicity means with Jodi Wilson | 20 Mar 2022 | 01:01:28
Would you say your life embraces simplicity? Today is an invitation to do that more, with author Jodi Wilson, whose book, Practising Simplicity tells the tale of how she found ways to embrace simplicity in all its, well, simplicity. While for her it looked like packing up a busy, urban life and jumping in a caravan, destination: Australia, she very much cautions against copying someone else's exploration and finding what simplicity means to you. There is no prescription in this conversation, only an invitation to feel less rushed, more fulfilled and grateful, and more aligned with nature when you're urban, in the country and everywhere in between. | 274. Terramation: Turning Death into Life. | 13 Mar 2022 | 00:57:02
This week, a heads up that in this episode we talk about death and dying a lot so if this is raw for you right now, you might want to skip it and I'm sending you strength and hugs. Micah Truman and Brie Smith from Return Home discuss how they're making an impact on the planet and on the grieving process for the families they support as their loved ones pass away, by creating a system by which families can move through the grieving produce for weeks by their loved ones' side, and receive the gift of fertile soil at the end of that process. I found it fascinating and it just made so much sense to me as I learnt about how it works and what kind of experiences the families have in the process. I think in a culture that has taboos around death and dying and shame around grief, it's time for a new conversation and way forward I interview. Most recently, Dr. Cohen has been looking at what the global slowdown has meant for the environment and sustainable living, and what it could mean if some of the radical changes in our everyday lifestyles and consumption habits persist long-term. His work and areas of discussion in this interview cover Environmental Social Science, Alternative Mobility Futures, Socio-Technical Transition Management, Sustainability Science, Environmental Policy and Sustainable Consumption. Think you don't have enough space to grow food? Enter the ever positive and can-do Nicole Shauder who will convince you otherwise - including a step by step sprout-growing tutorial for your kitchen table! In this episode we talk about growing a serious amount of food in a regular home garden or even more restrictive growing space by exploring various zones of permaculture and what you can do where, as well as talking about seed saving, seasons, different climates, setting up garden beds and more. She and her husband Dave came from being sick all the time with two small kids allergic to everything and when they made the changes away from packets and fast food to organics and growing as much of their food as they can, the results were lifechanging with none of their subsequent four children having any allergies at all and sickness in the family being a rarity. | 271. Melanie Salmon: Healing trauma with QEC | 20 Feb 2022 | 00:55:31
Is trauma informing your current physical and emotional state? Are there challenges you're finding emotionally or physically too hard to overcome no matter what you try? I am always fascinated by any techniques that support people on their healing journeys and coming across Dr Melanie Salmon's work makes me feel lucky to be able to then share that with you on the show in the hope that it might support healing and a deep sense of wellbeing for listeners in our community. After being a GP for 40 years, Melanie wanted to be able to offer patients who weren't healing with the tools available to her as a doctor so she studied psychotherapy and became a Gestalt therapist. Feeling that talk therapy also had its limitations, she went on a quest to see what might be able to do better, still and so, she developed something herself, QEC, which now sees coaches all around the world carrying out this life-changing therapy with people online. She is passionate about healing trauma and building internal resilience using the power of the subconscious mind. Bringing together the power of human connection with neuroscience, Quantum Energy Coaching (QEC) works to free you from past trauma, internal stress and the effects of self-limiting beliefs. | 267. Step into YOU with Lorraine Murphy | 23 Jan 2022 | 01:01:06
Do you remember a time where you felt really ‘you'. In flow? Maybe a great sense of boundless energy? The sense that there was something really motivating to wake up for each day in work, love, life? To kick off the new year I invite Lorraine Murphy, author of 3 wonderful books in the past centred around productivity, and now with a new book Step Into You, to discuss this - we talk about alarm bells that things are not going well and you need to pay attention - LOVE Lorraine's analogy on this, and also talk about some of the tools we can use to bring ourselves back to ourselves - not entirely easy with all the demands that come up in life, often with the busy-ness clouding our own filtering and awareness of when things might not be best for us! | 265. Mark Herrema on Replacing Plastic with AirCarbon | 12 Dec 2021 | 00:50:20
This week continuing our eco disruptor interviews, I interview Mark Herrema. Did you ever believe we might be able to stop using plastic and replace it with something that won't harm people and planet? Well, it may just be possible with AirCarbon and I'm very excited to see where this goes. Mark Herrema is the co-founder and CEO of Newlight Technologies. In 2003, Mark co-founded Newlight with a vision of using greenhouse gas as a resource to make high-performance sustainable materials. After a decade of research, Mark and his team developed a technology that uses a natural process found in the ocean to make a material called AirCarbon. AirCarbon is a meltable energy storage molecule made in almost all known living things that are strong, meltable, and ocean-degradable. AirCarbon is now being used to replace plastic in single-use food ware, fashion products, and a variety of other applications. Newlight has been honoured to receive recognition as “Biomaterial of the Year” by the Nova Institute, “Innovation of the Year” by Popular Science, and “Technology Pioneer” by the World Economic Forum. In 2016, Newlight was awarded the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Mark graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University and has since garnered over 15 years of expertise in process engineering, polymer functionalization, and strategic business development. I hope you enjoy this discovery as much as I have, hearing Mark's story and the development of something truly disruptive in the plastics space. | 264. Alyssa Couture on fashion for your health | 05 Dec 2021 | 00:48:27
This week we're talking Fashion with Alyssa Couture - It's been a while since we discussed fashion on the show and today with Alyssa, we talk about fashion for health - like did you know that polyester, never mind the horror of microplastics, has an acidic ph and feels unnatural on the skin as well as increasing the chance of rashes, body odour and pore clogging? So today's conversation is one that goes very deep into fashion for people and the planet and I loved it. Alyssa's upcoming fashion book HEALTHY FASHION: THE DEEPER TRUTHS establishes an alternative approach to apparel. Her work Healthy Fashion creates + broadcasts enlightening content on fashion deemed medicinal and I think it's a must read - it's way easier to avoid buying excess or synthetic clothes when we really understand the multiple why-nots, right? Professor James Trevelyan is an engineer with many accolades for inventions and innovations over the past 4 decades. From sheep sheering robots to landmine clearance technology to many things in between and now? Disrupting the air conditioning industry with something that cools people without cooking the planet - which is what, unfortunately, conventional air conditioning does. It's exciting to have him on the show to discuss his innovation and share with the world how we can revolutionise our sleep in warm climates by cooling ourselves rather than every room in the house. I hope you enjoy the interview and if you want to cut straight to the Coolzy innovation, skip to 20mins in, but if you, like, me, enjoy hearing about how someone comes to be doing what they do today, I found it fascinating to discuss some of his key innovations over the years. | 383. Kids and tech: How to cultivate a healthy, safe blend of tech and reality in the digital world with psychologist, and cyberpsychology researcher Dr Jocelyn Brewer | 26 May 2024 | 01:29:04
Big tech poses a double issue regarding tech and kids and family concerns. No1. For Parents trying to learn practical skills about parenting and caring in the age of so much technology and now AI, we’re often very quickly scared to death: The algorithms favour sensationalist, fear-based marketing: the worst of the worst facts get preference over moderate, nuanced skill-building messaging and we tend to then act out of fear when communicating with our kids around tech, instead of curiosity, building trust, teaching boundaries and validating their interests with their safety in mind. No2. For Kids, the algorithms can serve sensational, sexual or violent content that they’re not ready for and don’t know how to deal with in a healthy way, often sometimes feeling shame or breeding secrecy over what they’ve discovered or private conversations they’ve been invited to. We need to figure out how to be better flashlights for their spotlight minds, and Dr Jocelyn Brewer is back on the podcast to help us take a deep breath and get really good at it. We cover:
Share it far and wide - I haven’t spoken to a single parent or teacher who hasn’t got concerns over some of these topics, and we need more practical skill building, not more fear and denial. It's time to talk about relationships - with ourselves, with others, as parents, as lovers. We're going everywhere today in what feels like a very useful toe-dip into the subject that is sure to have a part two. Rebecca Poole has decades of experience looking after humans and helping them feel well but after a masters in Chinese Medicine and practicing overseas in China, and several successful years of practice back home, she wanted to go deeper. “Why do people experience these illnesses chronically? Why sometimes when someone changes jobs or relationships does their health nosedive or dramatically improve?” Today, she is a healer bringing all her tools to her clients through private practice and group learning and so if you've ever wanted to start doing the important work of leaning into your relationship with yourself and others, I can confidently say this show is a must listen.
