EP74 Can’t Relax? How to Make Your Home Relax-Ready05 Nov 202500:18:48

In this week’s episode was unexpectedly inspired by the  kids’ TV show—Bluey—watching this episode with my daughter sparked a reflection on the mental load many of us carry, particularly mothers and caregivers,
and how our homes can either add to that load… or ease it.

Inside, I dive into the emotional impact of our home environments and explore how design—both big and small—can actively support relaxation, calm, and our wellbeing. From clutter and storage to sensory cues and micro-zones, this episode offers practical and thoughtful ways to make your home a place where you can actually exhale.

If, like me, you’ve ever felt like you should be relaxing but just can’t switch off… this one’s for you.

What we’ll cover:

  • Why your home isn’t a neutral backdrop—and how it can impact your stress levels
  • How visual clutter affects your brain and your ability to relax
  • Big and small ways to reduce stress through design
  • How to create intentional "micro-zones" for calm
  • The importance of mini systems, and why they’re not just for productivity
  • Simple sensory shifts that make a big impact on wellbeing

Mentioned in this episode:

Bluey – S3 E40 “Relax” (yes, it's brilliant—even for grown-ups)

EP62 The Power Of A Pause: Why a Mid-Renovation Breather Can Be a Smart Move25 Jun 202500:15:21

If you’ve renovated before, you’ll know that it can be very exciting—but let’s face it, it can also be overwhelming. In this episode of I’m talking about something not often discussed but absolutely essential: the power of a well-timed pause.

A strategic breather can give you clarity, reduce costly mistakes, and help you reconnect with your vision. Join me inside where I’ll share signs you might need a pause (I’ve been there many times myself!) and how to use that time wisely.

Renovating moves through distinct phases—the slow, methodical planning followed by the frenetic on-site execution where suddenly everyone wants answers yesterday. So a well-placed pause can be okay, sometimes you need to step back for a moment to move forward with more confidence.

Whether you're currently mid-renovation or planning your future project, this episode provides the permission to incorporate intentional pauses that will ultimately save your sanity, your budget, and ensure your finished home truly reflects your vision. Remember, a successful renovation isn't just about speed—it's about creating a home you'll love for years to come.

In This Episode:

  • Why living in your home pre-renovation can lead to smarter planning
  • How a short break mid-project can help you reset and refocus
  • Common signs that you’re experiencing decision fatigue
  • Ways to use a renovation pause productively
  • How to avoid burnout and costly mistakes near the finish line

EP60 Designing with Heritage: How to Honour the Soul Of An Old Home11 Jun 202500:18:40

This episode delves into the art of designing with heritage, exploring how to preserve the soul of your period property. We talk about what to preserve, what can be adapted, and how to blend the charm of historic details with the functionality of modern living.

I also share stories from my own renovation projects, from Victorian terraces to Art Deco apartments, and the joy of sourcing reclaimed treasures that breathe character back into a space.

And for homes where previous naughty renovators have stripped away character, I share my tips on sourcing reclaimed materials to bring authenticity back to your space.

I’ll also cover how the exciting possibility of commissioning a bespoke piece can honour the historical style of your home, but with contemporary craftsmanship.

Whether your home still has its original features or has lost them along the way, this episode will help you think about how to save its soul and story, while still making it all yours.

EP59 Breaking the Floorplan: Rethinking the Way You Live in Your Space04 Jun 202500:19:17

Today’s episode is a gentle but firm permission to break the floor plan! Stop letting outdated room labels or cookie-cutter layouts dictate how you live in your home. Estate agents may have labelled the rooms, but that doesn’t mean you have to live in them that way.

Maybe you need a yoga space. A music nook. A second office. Or just a calm, sunlit corner to drink your morning coffee and take a breath.

Renovating is not just about moving walls or chasing square footage. We want to create a better way of living and a better way to connect within our own homes. Simple connection points in a home mean so much. It really is so powerful when you take ownership of your space, and think about how you want to live and how your home can support that.

In this episode we’ll dive into how to challenge your existing floor plan, think in flexible, lifestyle-driven zones, and why your home should support the way you want to live — not fight against it.

EP53 The Light Episode: Transform Your Home with Natural Light23 Apr 202500:20:47

Light isn't just about brightening a space, it fundamentally transforms how we feel in our homes. When you walk into a light-filled room, there's an immediate sense of warmth and energy that simply can't be replicated with artificial lighting.

In this episode I share a personal experience of how dramatically different educational environments—one dark and oppressive, one flooded with natural light—shaped my understanding of how buildings affect our emotional state. When I think back to it, this early awareness really formed the foundation of my approach to using light as a tool in renovation. Light shouldn't be a luxury or an afterthought, it should be prioritised in every project.

Whether you're planning a complete renovation or looking for simpler improvements, this episode explores practical solutions to bring more light into your home.

So join me inside where I chat through some tips like adding strategic roof lights, stealing borrowed light, and more.
Your home should support your well-being and form the framework for your busy life, and by understanding the power of light and implementing some of these strategies, you can create a home that energises and restores.

I’ll see you there!

EP51 Why You Should Have Things In Your Home That Tell A Story09 Apr 202500:12:34

What makes a house truly feel like home? Beyond beautiful furniture and perfect paint colors lies something more profound – the personal stories woven into your living space.

Taking inspiration from a recent client project where we've moved beyond renovation to thoughtfully selecting meaningful objects, this episode explores why surrounding yourself with items that tell your story creates a deeper connection to your space. Your identity is essentially a collection of stories, and bringing elements from your past, travels, and meaningful experiences into your home reflects who you truly are.

These story-rich items serve multiple purposes. They're natural conversation starters, as I discovered when my husband displayed Andreas Gursky's swimming pool photographs that captivate every visitor. They trigger positive emotions daily, with research suggesting people who display family photos live happier lives. And in today's uncertain world, they remind us to treasure our safe havens and the memories they protect.

The beauty of this approach? Creating a story-filled home doesn't require significant expense. From travel souvenirs to simple photo prints in nice frames, what matters is the meaning behind each piece. Your home becomes a visual autobiography, filled with reminders of special moments, cherished relationships, and personal values.

Ready to transform your space with meaningful touches? Listen for practical ideas to create a home that truly tells your unique story. And don't forget to check out our free renovation resources at southplacestudio.com/freebies to support your journey toward creating a deeply personal home.

EP50 Can Making A Home Help Heal Our Childhood Shame?02 Apr 202500:40:36

This is the 50th episode of How To Renovate. When I started the podcast, back in February 2024, the idea was to  focus on short informative episodes about the renovation process. And although I’ve mainly stuck to that, I’ve also found so much joy in interviewing some incredible people and exploring just how much our homes mean to us.

Our homes are powerful, they can either support our needs, daily lives and our well-being, or they do not.
Home is more than just four walls, it’s what happens inside. This episode was quite a difficult one for me. I decided to turn off the video and just reflect and talk freely as if I was having a coffee with a close friend, about what home means to me.  As many of our lovely listeners know by now, I grew up in Cape Town, South Africa during the apartheid era and this means that I have many complicated feelings of what home means, especially home as a country.  What our feelings of home are, how those feelings are formed during childhood, and the related shame that often comes with that, is a subject that has always fascinated me, and in this episode I explore my own.

This week’s episode is deeply personal. I’ve opened up about something I’ve never fully shared before—the shame I carried growing up under apartheid in South Africa, and how that experience shaped my relationship with home.

But, as adults, when we finally get to create our own spaces, we often don’t realise how much of our childhood we’re still carrying with us—and how making our own homes can help to heal that shame. For me, it’s been taking the feeling of not belonging that has roots that stretch far back, across continents and decades, and with quiet rebellion and intentional creation, turning that into what people who looked like me weren’t allowed to have, into the home I’ve built today.

So join me inside to explore how home can be a space for reclaiming worth, safety, and identity. I speak about  ways we can begin to heal childhood shame through the way we design and care for our homes—by prioritising self-expression, comfort, security, and making space for connection and joy.

Whether or not you’ve experienced trauma or displacement, I truly believe we all carry pieces of our past into the homes we create.

If this resonates with you in any way, grab that coffee and hit play.

EP49 Unexpected Places To Find Renovation Inspiration26 Mar 202500:19:12

Renovation inspiration doesn’t always have to come from a screen. It doesn't have to come from Pinterest and Instagram and TV, useful as they may be sometimes!

In this episode, I want to help you explore other places and ways to get that inspiration for your home.

Seeing something on a screen and trying to copy it can look, well, copied. I find that best design ideas come from unexpected places, and sometimes the smallest things can spark the best ideas.

So let’s get into it and look more closely at the things we experience, the tiny details we overlook, and the moments that make us feel something. Let’s look beyond the usual sources.

Finding your unique design and personality for your home amid the endless scroll of perfectly curated Instagram feeds and Pinterest boards can feel impossible. But hit play to find out where to look to find those little details that may just spark the big idea to bring your personality in your home design.

Join me inside for tips on creating a rich, layered home that suits you!

EP48 No Vanilla Renos Please!19 Mar 202500:17:57

What makes a home truly special? It's not the magnolia walls or the  generic fixtures that developers often choose to please everyone—and ends  up inspiring no one!

Whether you're renovating to stay or planning to  sell later, the "vanilla renovation" approach robs your space of the very thing that makes a house feel like a home: personality.

Join  me inside as I make the case against soulless renovations and share ways for creating spaces with character, that will still appeal to future buyers.

We explore the balance between timeless  foundations and bold accents, examining how thoughtful material  selections can elevate  your home, but without risking resale value.
Contrary to what seems to be the common developer mindset, homes with personality often command higher prices and attract more interested buyers.

I chat about how you can add your own DNA into the design with confidence, but still maintain that balance, and how neutral doesn't have to mean magnolia or white.
I also share my own adventures in painting an entire living room (ceiling included)  black!

Hit play to break free from the developer mindset that results in forgettable  spaces.
I’ll see you inside!

EP47 What To Do If You're Bored With Your Home12 Mar 202500:19:13

Ever catch yourself staring at your walls, feeling a bit… meh? Like your home has lost its spark, but you’re not quite sure why?

That creeping sense of boredom doesn’t mean you need to start knocking down walls or scrolling Rightmove.
Sometimes, all it takes is a few small shifts to completely change how your home feels.

In this episode, I’m sharing six simple but impactful ways to fall back in love with your space.
We’ll talk about the magic of shopping your own home (yes, rearranging your stuff can work wonders), the subtle power of swapping out things like cabinet handles and light fittings, and why a fresh furniture layout can make a room feel brand new. I’ll also dive into the importance of weaving in pieces that mean something—travel mementos, artwork, textiles—those little touches that bring warmth and personality back into your space.

Inspired by Nigel Slater’s insights on how fragrance shapes memory and emotion, I also chat about how the small things, like filling your home with scent, can make a big difference.

This episode is about rediscovering the joy in your home, with a few small shifts.
What’s one easy change you could make today to fall back in love with your space?

And since all I do is to help people get through their renovations on time, on budget and with as little stress as possible, I thought I just had to have Kate on the podcast to talk more about this.

So in this episode we dive into this topic that we both feel strongly about—why we’re not fans of slow renovating and how you can speed yours up.

Join us inside for tonnes of useful info on just where to spend your time when renovating, and you can steal Kate’s renovation wisdom and knowledge too.

EP42 Beyond The Renovation05 Feb 202500:17:44

It’s the podcast’s first birthday!
In this episode I wanted to talk about the meaning behind home renovations, because renovations are more than just bricks and mortar.
I chat about the emotional connections we have to our spaces and how design can enhance our mental and physical well-being.
We discuss how light and space can profoundly influence the atmosphere and our emotional health, particularly in darker climates like the UK, and how maximizing natural light can boost your mood.
This episode also emphasises how design can promote well-being, focusing on creating spaces that are both functional today - and adaptable for tomorrow.

Join me inside this special episode to explore all the above, and why we need to connect our home design to our personal identity and heritage.

I’ll see you inside!

EP41 How to Declutter - Tips That Actually Work29 Jan 202500:25:45

She's outraged!
I thought as I listened back to myself to edit this episode about de-cluttering 😂

I realised how angry I sounded, and I did consider re-recording it, but then realised that I am actually angry about clutter. 🙈
I’m angry and annoyed about the stress and overwhelm it causes for my brain, and I really don’t like how clutter robs a space of calm.

This episode is hugely based on an episode of the The Mel Robbins Podcast I listened to a while ago, and I thought the tips were really simple, and quite different to the usual advice you hear out there about sparking joy and rainbow organising, both of which I have never been entirely convinced of, I mean the dedication and time it must take to keep everything that way for any longer than a few days!

In the episode, Mel Robbins interviews Dana K White, the founder of A Slob Comes Clean, about de-cluttering and organising, and Dana offers some really useful advice and practical tips on what to do if you’re struggling with clutter. In this episode I cover those tips, and add in a sprinkling of my own advice as well.

I believe that embarking on a big home renovation, should definitely start with a big de-clutter.
So here is it, the original (and a little angry) version of this weeks’ episode of How To Renovate - along with some other ramblings about where I keep my socks and nail varnishes.

I do calm down a bit toward the middle of the episode.
Promise.

EP40 Five Pillar Process To A Successful Renovation – Deep Dive22 Jan 202500:41:44

In this episode of How to Renovate, for the first time, I’m breaking down my Five Pillar Process, the structure I’ve developed over my many years of renovating, and I one I follow now for every renovation I take on, whether its one of my own, or one for a client.

This Five Pillar Process is also the framework that guides many of the podcast episodes, and what my online renovation course, RenoVersity is structured within.
The five pillars are:
Planning
Preparation
People
Practical Management
Perfecting
And inside this episode, I go through what each pillar cover and why it’s integral to a successful renovation.

My focus is on giving you the tools to manage your project without the stress and budget over-runs – from planning to hiring the right contractor.
I’ll chat through the details of hiring professionals, emphasising the importance of research, clear communication, and trusting your instincts.

Effective project management doesn't stop at planning, it extends to being present on-site, knowing the process and managing your budget and team well.

Don’t forget to grab some freebies to help navigate the complexities of your home renovation with confidence and ease.

Interview Episode: Francesca Wezel from Francesca's Paints27 Nov 202401:03:30

Are you ready for a masterclass in colour?
This week, I was lucky enough to interview Francesca Wezel, the founder of Francesca’s Paints. Francesca’s Paints was started in November 1996 and is one of the first eco-friendly paint companies in the UK. Francesca swapped her musical ambitions for a passion for colors after a serendipitous encounter in Australia, transforming her life and career. Her story is a testament to following your passion and embracing unexpected opportunities, as she shares how her love for yoga and travels through India have inspired many of her unique color collections.

Francesca has a true talent for making and combining colours and textures, and colour matching. Since discovering her passion  for paint, she’s travelled the world looking for colours, their origins and their uses.

For this interview I visited Francesca in her London workshop, a wonderfully creative space. An artisan, an expert in her field, and a story teller, I just love just how Francesca talks about her work. Her passion is infectious and her stories captivating and she’s always championing women in her unique way – through colour.

In this episode we explore the emotional connections people form with color, and how these hues can transform the ambiance of a home. Francesca offers a tonne of valuable insights on selecting colours for your home that resonate personally, emphasising the importance of trusting instincts over trends.

This episode holds a wealth of inspiration and guidance for anyone looking to bring color into their home!

The addiction they don’t talk about - Interior Doom Scrolling!

I know, I know, it’s all very nice and ‘inspirational’ to spend hours drooling over other people’s homes on Pinterest and Instagram, trying to imagine what your home renovation could one day become.

But here's the truth: too many options, and too much inspiration can stall your renovation progress. In this episode I’ll chat about how overwhelm and design fatigue can creep in when faced with a sea of endless Pinterest images. The dreaded paralysis by analysis, where overthinking every choice can grind your project to a halt.
And too many options can cause overwhelm, resulting in inconsistency and making it  difficult to communicate your design vision with your team.

Tune in and stay to the end for The Fix;  practical advice on narrowing your focus to a few key inspirations and empowering you to make confident decisions and move forward seamlessly with your home reno project

EP30 Should You Ask Other people’s Opinions On Your Reno?23 Oct 202400:12:45

Have you ever asked someone’s opinion on something and then regretted it? Me too. It can get awkward.

When it comes to something as big (and as expensive) as a home renovation, you’ll want to make sure that you’re asking the right people for their input. Mayyyybeeee NOT Mary* in accounts whose home you’ve never laid an eye on before. I find that when people discover you’re renovating, SO many are willing to add their advice and opinions, all usually well-meaning and with good intentions, but you’ll need to know who to listen to, and who to just smile and nod along to.

In this weeks’ episode of How To Renovate I’m helping you filter through advice and decide whose input to take on board.
And this is the controversial bit, sometimes it’s not the architect. 😬

Come and listen in, I talk through why the above is true, and I also share some key questions to ponder rather than opening the floodgates to outside opinions.

Whether you're feeling overwhelmed by choices or just seeking some reassurance in your decisions, I hope this episode will give you insight and confidence to keep your project grounded in your vision for your dream home.

*Names have been changed 😂

🖤 Tash

EP69 How To Make Your Small Kitchen Feel Bigger01 Oct 202500:19:08

Hello, I’m back this week with a little love for the small but mighty kitchen. If your kitchen didn’t get top billing—this episode is for you. Kitchens often have to work the hardest in the home, and when expanding isn’t an option, it’s all about making the most of what you have.

Today, I’m sharing practical tips and a few interior design solutions to help you make your small kitchen feel bigger, brighter, and better.

We’ll chat through:

Lighting that flatters and functions – from hidden LEDs to layered lighting plans that bring warmth and brightness even to windowless kitchens.

Layout love – why your floor plan is your best friend, how to test different configurations, and why every centimetre counts.

Optical illusions – reflective surfaces, continuous flooring, and mirrored splashbacks that trick the eye and stretch the space.

Storage (of course!) – deep drawers over cupboards, slim pull-out ladders, and even those genius kick drawers you might not have considered.

Breaking the boundaries – how to borrow light and sightlines from adjacent rooms without knocking down all the walls.

If you’ve got a small kitchen, don’t despair—you’re in the right place.

Interview Episode With Laura Jane Clark - The Importance Of Exploring Your Own Home Layout10 Sep 202400:59:19

Warning! This episode contains a few instances of swearing!

In this, our very first interview episode on the podcast, I sit down with TV’s Laura Jane Clark, Architect, Author and presenter on TV shows like Ugly House to Lovely House, George Clarke's Amazing Spaces, Shed of the Year, and of course – the popular Your Home Made Perfect.

I was honoured to have Laura on as my first guest, she is so personable and was great fun to interview. In this episode, we chat about how Laura found architecture, the importance of exploring your own home layout before starting a reno, our shared mission to democratise great home design, and what to do if you’re a woman suddenly in charge on a building site!

Laura also talks about what it was like being on the popular home renovation show, Your Home Made Perfect, one of my favourite home reno shows (and I’ve seen MANY! 😂 )
