Solving Horse Problems: Do they feel safe? Do they understand? Are they motivated? with specialist young horse trainer: Connie Colfox13 Nov 202301:05:14

I stumbled across the amazing Connie Colfox on Horse & Country TV watching her use positive reinforcement to help top eventing riders with ‘problem’ horse behaviours.

She was able to really impress these riders with how quickly she could change these talented horse’s minds about something they were struggling with.

In the words of Connie: “We really want horses to feel comfortable in the world they live in. By giving them a broad grounding with positive reinforcement we build trust to take on the challenges we encounter together”.

I was particularly interested in what she said around the 23-minute mark of this episode, and I agree that what she mentions here is a huge part of horses performing beyond their natural capabilities - and conversely why sometimes performance drops despite better riding!

I found Connie to be extremely humble, despite her decades of horse experience and knowledge, and she shares a balanced view and open approach to horsemanship, forever observing and learning from the horse.

If you have a horse with some ‘problem’ behaviours or you are a performance rider curious about how positive reinforcement could help your horse, you will love this episode with Connie! Let me know what you think!

Pure Liberty with Andrea Wady26 Apr 202300:48:22

“It’s never too late to change”

👉🏼 Click here to find out all about Andrea's Pure Liberty course: https://uu202.isrefer.com/go/pureliberty1/adh/

Andrea Wady has been riding since she was a child, competing in showjumping and endurance, and later running a successful horse tours company… but she always felt something was missing and wanted more in the relationship with her horses.

Moving to Costa Rica from the UK, Andrea’s journey took a turn down a path to find a way to connect with horses without coercion. Crossing the country of Costa Rica with fellow liberty trainer Elsa Sinclair (the creator of the Taming Wild movie series) they explored bonding with two very damaged rescue horses through movement and a liberty mindset.

Through this experience and years of study, Andrea found the missing piece in her horsemanship and the essence of creating relationship with horses. Andrea is now dedicated to helping others improve the relationship, trust, and bond with their own horses.

She is also the author of the newly released book ‘Crossing Bridges’ where she shares the enlightening journey of exploring Costa Rica on foot with the 2 damaged horses with the liberty mindset that she now teaches as ‘pure liberty’.

In this episode we discuss:

  • Andrea’s horsemanship journey from the traditional “make them do it” approach, to forming friendships with rescue horses across Costa Rica jungle
  • Andrea’s realisations when she first attempted liberty with no equipment or treats
  • Being open-minded, flexible, trusting yourself, and getting past your ego when being with horses
  • How we as humans solve problems for our horses too much
  • Listening to your horse as a basis for happy horse training
  • Transcending physical cues in training horses
  • What is the concept of Pure Liberty, and how to get involved in doing it with your horse
  • The #1 mismatch between horses and humans
  • Andrea’s book recommendations and her favourite horse-related purchase
  • Why it’s never too late to change your path or approach with horses
  • Plus so much more!

Classical Dressage with Partnership, Harmony, and Balance in Body and Mind with Anja Beran30 Mar 202300:56:38

Anja Beran trains horses with the classical principles of Horsemanship: with her sole aim being to ensure in the course of her life that an increasing number of people become familiar with the art of classical horsemanship. She hopes very much that a great number of riders will be able to experience serious enthusiasm for classical horsemanship in its true and original sense.

Anja runs her own farm and equestrian centre called "Gut Rosenhof" in Germany, she teaches numerous clinics and seminars in the United States, England, and all around the world.

Anja’s training philosophy is that Dressage is here for the horse and not the horse for the dressage, and she prides herself in adapting to the individual horse’s personality, solving any problem in a sensitive, horse-friendly way.

Anja focuses on the natural movement of the horse using gymnastic exercises to help horses find balance mentally and physically. She believes that each rider should contribute to their horse living a long, healthy and happy life which can only happen with a correct and holistic approach to horse care and training.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Anja Beran’s journey to classical dressage
  • Partnership, harmony, personality, balance, body and mind as a basis for training horses
  • Riding with ‘invisible aids’
  • A holistic approach to horse’s happiness
  • The issues with nosebands and auxiliary/side reins
  • The origins of dressage and how it has changed over the years
  • The potential future of modern dressage competition
  • What the ultimate contact should feel like from a young horse to advanced
  • Classical dressage as a form of physical therapy for horses
  • How classical dressage has transformed the lives of horses destined for euthanasia
  • Her favourite classical masters & their books
  • What is meant by riding the horse from back to front
  • Anja’s mission to have ‘sustainable’ horses who are healthy, happy, and motivated into their old age
  • And so much more!

Anja has an important message to share with the world, and I hope that many riders will draw inspiration from how she rides and trains horses, knowing that dressage should be FOR the horse!

How to Develop Connection & Deepen Your Relationship With Your Horse | Part One Horsemanship Fundamentals Series05 Mar 202301:27:24

Connection…. it's such a buzzword in the horsemanship space!

But it’s hard to quantify. It’s subjective. It’s elusive…some may think it’s even a bit ‘woo woo’.

I think it’s kinda like the 'half halt' in dressage- everyone has a slightly different definition of exactly what it is, and people have trouble explaining it! But once you know, you know!

Connection is super important- an absolute fundamental of horsemanship!

So in part one of this 3-part Horsemanship Fundamentals Series, I talk all about connection including:

  • What connection is, what it looks & feels like
  • What problems can arise if you and your horse lack connection
  • 8 mistakes people make when trying to achieve connection
  • 10 things you can do to help improve your connection

Just teach them how to smile! Only joking…😅

Equine Veterinary Medicine & Liberty as a Mindset with Nadine Lindblom01 Feb 202301:39:38

"Liberty is something that he feels, rather than what he does” ~Nadine Lindblom

Horsemanship Breakthroughs Podcast: Equine Veterinary Medicine & Liberty as a Mindset with Nadine Lindblom

Nadine has worked closely with horses for the past 16 years. During this time, she has had the opportunity to learn from several fantastic trainers; however, she says the most profound lessons have been from the horses themselves!

In 2020, Nadine graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Honours). Studying and working as an equine veterinarian has helped Nadine understand horses on an even deeper level!

Nadine preaches that in order to have a horse that is willing and able to engage, connect and use expressive movement, he needs to be healthy and free from pain/discomfort and stress. Nadine believes it is important for horse owners to learn to recognize the subtle signs to be able to help their horse sooner rather than later.

Therefore, Nadines work with horses which she calls the Balanced Art of Liberty also focuses on the pillars of equine health as well as training the eye to notice the small but critical changes in equine movement, posture and behaviour.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Nadine’s horse journey into liberty training and veterinary medicine

Internal Softness, Martial Arts, and ’Horses Aren’t People’ with Mark Rashid01 Nov 202201:09:24

“It’s an internal softness that you take with you in everything that you do”

Horsemanship Breakthroughs Podcast: Internal softness, Martial Arts, and ‘Horses Aren’t People’ with Mark Rashid

Mark Rashid is an internationally known author and horseman known for his ability to understand the horse’s point of view and solve difficult problems with communication rather than force.

He began working with horses at age ten, when he met the “old man,” who taught him to work with horses, not against them, and to listen to what the horse is trying to say.

Mark’s clinics are structured as one-on-one work with horse and rider and are immensely popular with people around the world.

When Mark decided to study the martial art of aikido as a way to improve his horsemanship, he brought the same quiet determination to it that he exhibits in his work with horses.

Mark worked full-time on ranches for many years gathering herds, managing stock, and training horses. When time permits, he still enjoys working on ranches near his home in Colorado as well as playing guitar professionally with his friends.

Mark is the author of fourteen books, with his latest titled ‘for the love of the horse’

Understanding Horses With Gabi Neurohr07 Sep 202200:53:00

Horsemanship Breakthroughs Podcast: Understanding Horses With Gabi Neurohr

“What matters is to really understand the horse’s mind”

Gabi doesn't like to be put into a box, have the stamp of a “Method”. She believes good Horsemanship – good Horsemen/women – usually share the same principles. Their techniques might be different, but principles remain the same. You will see Gabi playing on the ground, at Liberty, riding dressage, jumping a cross country course, riding endurance, riding bareback and bridleless and sometimes you might even see her in a western saddle.

Gabi’s goal for every horse, every session is to find the connection to the horse and make him/her feel proud of his achievements. A happy, healthy horse that loves to do stuff with his human partner – no matter what the discipline!

Gabi Neurohr loves to learn, educate herself, be open and look at other aspects of horses. Over the years she has gained a huge knowledge about the following areas of expertise:

  • Natural Hoof Care – Hoof Boots and corrective trimming
  • Horse Nutrition – Natural Feeding and special cases
  • Phytotherapy for Horses
  • Natural Horse Boarding
  • Healthy Biomechanics for the riding horse
  • Basic saddle fitting

Some of you may know that as well as a horsemanship coach, I am a physiotherapist!

New Horse, Now What? Start Off On The Right Path With Your New Horse | Relationship, Groundwork, & Riding30 Aug 202300:44:54

Often people will contact me for help with their new, young, or green horse.

It’s sometimes not until we have a new horse that we become curious and start to question how we can ‘best’ set up this new relationship.

Problems may arise with a new horse that we might not have had with a previous one, and we wonder how we can best help them.

It’s common to be a little afraid of making mistakes with a new horse, as not to ‘tarnish’ the new relationship.

In this episode, I talk about how you can start off on the ‘right’ path with your new horse so that you can have a healthy happy relationship with them AND achieve your riding goals.

Balancing Life, Achieving Horse Goals As A Mum, and Believing In Yourself With Meg Mortimer28 Mar 202200:55:16

Horsemanship Breakthroughs Podcast: Balancing life, achieving horse goals as a mum, and believing in yourself with Meg Mortimer

“Believe in Yourself”

Meg Mortimer describes herself as a mum who never grew out of the horse phase!

She lives in central New South Wales on a sheep farm with her husband and 3 kids.

Meg has loved horses all her life, dabbling in pony club as a kid, and progressing to competing in dressage, showjumping, and eventing in her twenties.

Meg describes herself at that time as being fearless and that meant she could have a lot of fun. In her thirties, she got married and had babies- and suddenly was not so fearless anymore.  Meg is now in her forties and has learned to be patient, to take things slow, and improve her communication with her horse. She feels at ease with herself knowing she doesn’t need to compete to prove she is a capable horseperson.

Meg describes her philosophy with horses as always being kind, slowing down, and listening to your horse. Meg says she also loves the intention of balance as this is not only for her horses, but her family and life in general. Meg loves learning and whilst her life is sometimes crazy chaos she loves the ride.

I came across Meg when she signed up to my Horsemanship Fundamentals Academy, and I began teaching Meg through pivo lessons which has been a lot of fun!

In this episode, we talk about Meg’s horsemanship journey and how she overcomes the challenges of balancing life and work whilst pursuing her horse goals in a way that is true to her values around training horses.

You will love Meg’s contagious positive energy and the lessons she shares around her horses Gally, Patch, & Mr Jones.

If you’re a mum and rider with goals you will be inspired by Meg’s story.

Classical Dressage, Liberty, and Self-development with Bethany Tuskey08 Oct 202100:47:00

Horsemanship Breakthroughs Podcast

An Interview with Bethany Tuskey on classical dressage, liberty, and self-development.

“Keep Moving Forward!”

Bethany’s love of horses began at an early age. She now has over 15 years experience working with horses and has been instructing and training for over 10 years. Bethany has dedicated her life to learning the art of horsemanship from master horse trainers. She has studied classical dressage, liberty work, work in hand, and long reining and has recently taken up the challenge of learning vaulting. Bethany has taken what she has learned from other trainers as well the horses, and combined in with her Christian faith to create a unique style of training based on love for the horse, the desire to help her horses to become better versions of themselves, and the desire to build partnerships with her horses based on mutual trust and respect.

In addition to dressage work, Bethany is able to take her partnership with her horses to a whole new level by working with them at liberty, where there is nothing connecting her to the horse and the horse has the freedom to do as he wants. Working with horses at liberty creates a relationship with your horse that will transcend anything you have experienced before.

Bethany enjoys performing with her Andalusians at various shows and exhibitions. It is her goal to share her unique training style and show people how they too can take their relationship with their horse to a whole new level.

𝐈𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐝𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐬:

  • Bethany’s start with horses from training wild mustangs, to practising classical dressage.
  • Her relationship-focussed training philosophy with horses combining groundwork, liberty, and classical dressage.
  • How a “difficult” horse lead her to reflect on herself and dive deep into self-development
  • Bethany’s holistic approach of body, mind, and spirit to help horses be happy
  • The value of investing in your learning
  • Who inspires her and what she is currently learning including her recommended horse books
  • The secret to Bethany’s success so far with horses, and the one message she would like all horse people to know
  • PLUS so much more!

Bethany is a heart-centred and open-minded horse trainer. We share a love of self-develoement and know how important this is in horses and in life.

Intrinsic Motivation for Healthy Movement in Horses with Kathy Sierra12 Sep 202102:03:21

Horsemanship Breakthroughs Podcast

Intrinsic Motivation for Healthy Movement with Kathy Sierra

"Nature as an ally instead of adversary”

Kathy Sierra has ten years working in human sports medicine as a training director in Los Angeles.

She then went back to school for computer science, working after as a game developer and software architect. Kathy eventually worked in Hollywood and taught “interaction design for intrinsic motivation” at UCLA Entertainment Studies and Universal Studio, and went on to create an educational book series in technology that sold over 2 million copies.

Horses have been a lifelong passion, but not her profession. However, when her beloved horse Draumur was nearly euthanized, Kathy felt it was her fault, so she took everything in her background on motivation, learning psychology, neuroscience, and movement science, and synthesized a path forward to help him when conventional methods failed.

Eventually other people saw them and began to ask for help with their horses, so she created the philosophy and principles of Intrinzen. She lives on a small island near the border of US/Canada with her husband and 6 horses.

𝐈𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐝𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐬:

  • Kathy’s start with horses and how her career in sports biomechanics influenced her horsemanship
  • Psychology of intrinsic motivation for movement in horses
  • The story of Draumur, a horse who once refused to move, and who Kathy considers the founder of everything she does now with horse & movement
  • Using negative & positive reinforcement without diminishing intrinsic motivation
  • The challenge of Vavi- of helping a horse find badass movement!
  • The birth of Intrinzen! And Kathy’s tips on how to get started with this way of training
  • What could be really happening when you think your horse is “testing you”
  • Setting up your environment to create intrinsic motivation for movement
  • Kathy’s views on healthy horses and what healthy movement is
  • Creativity, experimentation, & autonomy in training horses
  • PLUS so much more!

Kathy is extremely intelligent, knowledgeable, and polarizing with her views on horses, horse training, & biomechanics.

A Self-Taught Horseman’s Heart-Centred & Humerous Journey: Jaleele Abdul Alim and Black Pearl24 Aug 202101:35:34

✨"Anything you do, do it with your heart” Jaleele Abdul Alim, or Jal as his friends call him, lives in France, next to Paris and is an animal lover. He doesn’t come from an equestrian background at all, but for some reason has always been drawn to horses as far as he can remember. He grew up listening to country music and dreaming of riding horses. He is a self-taught horseman and doesn’t believe in *one* method when it comes to horsemanship. However, he started this journey because of Buck, the movie, and because he stumbled upon videos of people playing the Parelli 7 games. But he mostly learnt everything he knows today thanks to his mare Quincy and his horse BlackPearl He is a true lover of the old vaquero traditions and doesn't just ride only to ride but with tiny achievable goals for his horses and himself. He is also fascinated by social media, or all media. Also loves entertaining people by pulling their heartstring or making them laugh. His goal is to show the world the beauty of the relationship that bonds humans to their horses, if only people can learn to earn the trust of their horses.

  • What REAL groundwork is (not just lunging!)
  • The story behind Black Pearl

  • What horses need above the basic needs to be happy
  • Importance of LISTENING to your horse

Natural Horsemanship and Eventing Based on Love with Aleksa Karlinska05 Aug 202101:24:10

🎙🐴Horsemanship Breakthroughs Podcast Episode 20

Natural Horsemanship & Eventing Based on Love with Aleksa Karlinska ( aka @natural_eventing_rider )

"Loving is Understanding"

Alexa presents to us….the best of both worlds: You CAN do natural horsemanship AND compete!

Aleksa Karlinska is a horse trainer and horse riding instructor, teaching horses and humans to understand each other - so they can build relationships based on love.

Aleksa competes in eventing competitions, with the aim of proving that natural horsemanship can be combined with sport.

She was born and raised and still lives in Poland, right on the border with Germany. She has dedicated her life to making a positive change in the equestrian world.

𝐈𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐝𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐬:

👉🏼Alexa’s start with horses, in horsemanship, & eventing! Including her selection on the national eventing team.

👉🏼The turning point for Alexa, and what made her realise something wasn’t right with her horse training & competing.

👉🏼Combining natural horsemanship & competing, particularly in jumping & eventing.

👉🏼The sad truth behind some ways of training for competition, including breaking a horse’s spirit.

👉🏼A day in the life of Alexa, from how she starts her day to taking the time to train her horses mentally and physically, and what she’s into outside of horses.

👉🏼The benefits of slowing down, being mindful, and the conscious use of social media.

👉🏼Why horse personality is SO important for performance & competing

👉🏼Why your APPROACH is more important than your METHOD, and being open-minded in training.

👉🏼Why less is more, and going slowly is  more important the quick results

👉🏼The shocking truth behind some bridleless riding

👉🏼What the natural horsemanship people lack, and what the sport work lack

👉🏼Controversial questions and Alexa’s frustration with extreme views

👉🏼Shame around past methods of training and being brave enough to face the truth and change paths

👉🏼Why it’s more important to know WHY you are training something whether that’s groundwork or riding (instead of HOW)

Aleksa is very honest about her past with horses and how she has changed and continues to adapt as she learns.

She has an interesting perspective coming from a competitive background, and we share many of the same values, especially the mission of making a positive impact on the equestrian world and showing people it’s possible to have a good relationship with your horse and compete.
