Making of a Legend: Gone with the Wind17 Feb 202500:38:18

Making of a Legend Gone with the Wind

A disclaimer:

This is a disclaimer that will be at the start of every episode relating to this movie.

Gone with the Wind is the 1939 film based on Margret Mitchell’s 1936 novel of the same name. It is set in the antebellum south and the reconstruction era. It is told from the point of view of slave owners who long for the civilization that has Gone with the Wind. It is full of revisionist history and  false narratives surrounding the atrocities committed by white slaver holders and the confederacy. I feel this film is important to review and discuss. We must understand the history of systemic oppression in media in order to properly move into the future and ensure it does not repeat itself. Gone with the Wind and films like it must be examined with a critical eye in order to identify propaganda, and white washing when we see it.

I will attempt to handle this subject as best as I can as a white women who is from Canada, and I do acknowledge that I am not able to understand full nuance as it is not my lived experienced.

And to anyone listening who is bothered by a statement like this or any warnings like it that appear before films because you find it “woke” or “unnecessary” this isn’t the podcast for you. I am committed to my own learning and unpacking of systemic racism and if that bothers you, you are part of the problem.

Rain Man02 Jun 202500:52:57

A bonus episode for autism awareness month.  Rain man. The first portrayal of autism in film and one of my favourites of all time. This film brought mainstream awareness to autism at a time it was poorly understood. Although overtime there is more nuanced discussions to be had. This film shows how terrible misunderstanding and treatment people on the spectrum in the 20th century. It highlights the difficulties families can face particularly in this time period of institutionalization and shame. This film also shows the beauty of autism and some of the amazing things that people on the spectrum bring to our world. Dustin Hoffman’s brilliant performance is based on real people he worked with for over a year in order to portray Raymond with the respect and accuracy he deserved. He thanked the men he based his performance on in his acceptance speech for their work. Dr Ruth Sullivan consulted on the film to assist with the portrayal of autistic individuals and their experiences. Although through a 2025 lens we can discuss the importance for more diverse portrayals of autism across the spectrum,  the implications of the term “savant” and having a non autistic actor in the role. At the time this film was the first, and still is one of the only films to have an autistic character protagonist. As a proud family member of the most beautiful individual with autism this film touches my soul in a way I can’t explain. I’m so grateful to have such a beautiful story available to the public. Please enjoy this bonus episode. This month, and every month please bring awareness, kindness and curiosity to autism. Advocate for people on the spectrum and their families. Let’s do better in cinema going forward to amplify the voices of people on the spectrum and have more nuanced portrayals.

Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed27 Mar 202500:33:11

Jinkies! Can it be? A live action adaption of a cartoon I actually like? Well folks my snobby self hates to admit it but I do love the Scooby doo adaptions, particularly the sequel. I  know I know I know, you don’t need to tell it goes against all I believe in. I know I’m a hypocrite I accept it.

Seriously though I love this campy classic. This is the the ultimate cartoon adaption. It tries to be nothing more than the cartoon in which it’s based. (with an original mystery however, WB didn’t phone it in like Disney)

With I think arguably the best casting a film has ever had? Absolutely ICONIC! I love every bit of this little cheesy film and it will forever be in my top 10.  I don’t care what anyone says it’s great.

So get your favourite latex orange jumpsuit, a box of Scooby Snacks and let’s fucking do this 🔎 👀 👣

JFK01 May 202500:41:16

JFK is a story about corruption and conspiracy—about the unsettling possibility that the truth has been buried under layers of lies. Through the eyes of New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison, played by Kevin Costner, we see the sheer weight of institutional resistance faced when one man dares to question the official narrative. The film becomes less about proving a single theory and more about exposing a system that thrives on obfuscation, intimidation, and fear. It challenges viewers to consider: what happens when those in power decide that truth is too dangerous to be known?

But beyond the political intrigue and courtroom drama lies a deeper, more personal theme—the profound sorrow and loss that rippled through the American psyche after JFK’s assassination. Stone’s film taps into a collective wound, a sense that something bright and promising was extinguished on that day in Dallas. The president’s death is portrayed not just as the loss of a leader, but as the death of an ideal—the dream of a more just, hopeful America.

Blood Diamond24 Apr 202500:41:53

Blood Diamond: a gripping political thriller set during the Sierra Leone Civil War of the 1990s. The film starkly portrays violence, including the use of child soldiers, forced labor, and the atrocities committed by rebel factions. It sheds light on how the global demand for diamonds fueled the conflict, implicating international markets and consumers in the perpetuation of violence. Through its narrative, “Blood Diamond” underscores the importance of media in uncovering and understanding such complex issues, emphasizing that films can serve as powerful tools for social awareness and change.

Scarface 18 Apr 202500:39:13

From refugee to ruthless kingpin, Tony Montana’s rise and fall is a cautionary tale. Al Pacino’s performance love it or hate it made a lasting impact on the film industry. I’ll explore the film’s themes of greed, capitalist corruption, and the intoxicating allure of power. Prepare for the over-the-top 80s aesthetics, the quotable dialogue, and why this film, despite its flaws, has cemented its place as a cult classic. Buckle up for a wild ride through the excess and the consequences of chasing the American Dream.

JAWS03 Jul 202500:50:50

Take a bite out of this week's episode on JAWS!  We are joined again this week by guest  Michael Moroz. Together we unpack this 1975 horror classic, the first ever summer blockbuster. Steven Speilberg's masterful direction keeps you on your toes through the entire movie, strategically hiding the shark until it can make maximum impact. The political themes in this movie of the mayor wanting to keep the beach open in order to protect business above people seems more relevant now more than ever? (Sounds very 2020) So let's dive deep into the waters of Amity…if you dare.

Little Women (1994)24 May 202500:37:55

In this episode, I dive into the beloved 1994 adaptation of Little Women, a film that continues to charm decades later. Explore the timeless themes of sisterhood, resilience, and identity that make it a movie you can watch again and again. The film has  exceptional casting, Winona Ryder shines as the fiercely independent Jo March, while a young Christian Bale delivers a memorable and heartfelt performance as Laurie. I know it’s a remake but it not only honours the source material but, in many ways, elevates it. Proving that sometimes, remakes are worth it.

We talk about what makes classic films so enduring, the stars who defined generations, and the magic of the movie theatre experience.

Of course, no conversation about Hollywood history would be complete without a little righteous outrage...and yes, we agree: Judy Garland was absolutely robbed!! (Don’t worry, we explain.)

No Country for Old Men22 Jun 202500:26:23

This week on Get Your Popcorn, we dive into No Country for Old Men — a film that thrives on silence, tension, and the terrifying unpredictability of fate. Join me as I unpack the Coen Brothers' chilling masterpiece, which, for the first time, actually won me over.

This was my first viewing and the first time I truly connected with a Coen Brothers film and I’ll tell you why. From Javier Bardem’s haunting performance as Anton Chigurh to the oppressive quiet that makes every moment feel like a coin toss with death, we explore how the film weaponizes stillness and strips away traditional storytelling in favor of something far more unsettling.

We’ll talk about the film’s refusal to give easy answers, its meditation on inevitability and morality, and why that ending left me sitting in stunned silence. Is fate random? Is evil unstoppable? And can silence be louder than any score?

The Deer Hunter17 Jun 202500:34:09

In this episode, we dive deep into Michael Cimino’s 1978 epic The Deer Hunter. A film that won Oscars, divided critics, and left a lasting (and complicated) mark on American cinema. We explore its legacy, both celebrated and criticized: from its haunting depiction of Vietnam War trauma to the controversy around its historical accuracy and portrayal of Vietnamese characters.

We’ll unpack why Christopher Walken’s performance remains a career defining, soul crushing revelation, even decades later. But we’ll also confront the uncomfortable truth...despite its ambition and artistry, The Deer Hunter doesn’t entirely hold up. From its bloated pacing to a romanticized view of what it means to be a man, there's a lot that feels out of step with today’s lens.

Is it a masterpiece? Is it propaganda? Or is it something messier, more human, and more tragic? Let’s talk about the film that made roulette a metaphor for war and America.

Black Panther06 Jun 202500:36:58

In this episode, we dive into Black Panther (2018)—the crown jewel of the MCU and, frankly, the only one truly worth your time. We explore the stunning world-building of Wakanda, a sci-fi Afro-futurist dream that feels both mythic and grounded. From the vibrant costume design to the rich cultural textures, it’s a visual and emotional celebration of heritage, and strength. Ryan Coogler’s sharp, purposeful direction elevates the superhero genre into something far more meaningful. It’s not just a Marvel movie—it’s a movement.

Zodiac01 Jun 202500:34:00

In this episode, we dive deep into David Fincher’s haunting 2007 crime thriller Zodiac. A masterpiece that’s as meticulous as the killer it portrays. We unpack Fincher’s obsessive attention to detail, the film’s eerie stillness, and how it redefined the genre without ever needing a final answer. Plus, a look at Robert Downey Jr.’s scene-stealing performance, which feels less like acting and more like a sharp, self-aware impression of his own chaotic charm. Tune in as we explore why Zodiac remains one of Fincher’s most underrated and unsettling achievements.

The Color Purple (1985)31 Aug 202500:51:46

Ending our Summer of Spielberg with a film that I feel he was the wrong director for.

TW: This episode is a heavy one guys. The Color Purple is the 1985 film adaption of Alice Walkers novel of the same name. It deals with topics of child sexual abuse, incest, and spousal abuse.

Steven Spielberg a controversial director of this film given the nature of the story being about predominantly African American characters. The film and the book have been criticized by the NAACP for the depiction of black men as abusers with little redeeming qualities. This must be acknowledged and respected. Although Spielberg has been defended and praised heavily by the cast for the last 40 years for his work, and the care he took in telling a story that for them felt sincere, he received criticism from audiences.

He also shied away from the queer relationships in the book at his admission of being out of his depth, which is such a pivotal and important part of the novel.

I think it’s important to discuss this film, as it has had a huge impact on cinema. I think it’s important to criticize directors for their missteps even when it seems to be done with good intentions. We also need to acknowledge white washing of narratives, and call out when white directors have been given opportunities that were not given to equally talented black directors.

Institutional racism needs to be broken down from within, not just from the outside.

Steven Spielberg was not the best choice for director for this film, and through this Summer of Spielberg series I feel it would do a disservice to only discuss his wins, I need to cover the controversies of his career as well. Which includes an opportunity that should have been given to someone else.

I will try to handle this as sensitively as I can and I want to ensure I take as much care with this review as possible.

This is not to take away from the actors in the film that are incredible, including but not limited to Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover and Oprah. Their performances are what make this film as good as it is. And they deserves their flowers for their accomplishments in truly making an emotionally moving motion picture.
