"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some weeks in addition to the main podcast. From there I talk about the elements of this that worked so well. Then with the second film, I also try to get into why there was a gap after the previous film, and then I talk about what worked and what didn't for me.

DTVC Extra 4, The Fast and Furious Franchise: Fate of the Furious and Hobbs and Shaw20 Jun 202300:52:49

"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some of the weeks we don't have episodes of the main podcast. In this episode we continue the series looking at the Fast and Furious films, moving to "Fate of the Furious" and "Hobbs and Shaw." I look at how Fate of the Furious is able to maintain the success of Furious 7, but also the turmoil that comes at the end of production when Hobbs and Shaw was announced. Then with Hobbs and Shaw, I talk about why this one doesn't do as well. Was it the quality of the film? Were we seeing the "Disney Effect" that also crushed Terminator: Dark Fate that year? Maybe a combination of both?

"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some of the weeks we don't have episodes of the main podcast. In this episode we continue the series looking at the Fast and Furious films, moving to "Fast and Furious" and "Fast Five." I try to set the stage for what the film industry was like when both films come out, look at how the franchise pivots from racing films to big budget blockbusters, and how that pivot allows the films to thrive at a time when Disney was starting to consolidate its hold on the industry. I also chat about Spiro Razatos, how he takes things to another level when he joins in Fast Five, plus his PM classics and the contributions he made to the Golden Age of DTV Action.

DTVC Podcast 110 "Mini Willis Fest"18 Oct 202201:08:05

In our first episode on Anchor FM, I'm going solo to look at three Bruce Willis films, "Out of Death," "Hard Kill," and "Vendetta." How did I make out? I think the word "slog," came up a few times, as did "enough material for an episode of a syndicated action show." I also discuss Willis's legacy, and how these kinds of films may or may not have an effect, plus, have we reached the tipping point with these movies?

You can find me at dtvconnoiseur.blogspot.com, plus you can buy my books through my author page at https://www.amazon.com/Matthew-Poirier/e/B085HTVYNJ

DTVC Podcast 109 "Getting Abusive"05 Oct 202201:38:17
Time to get Abusive on this episode, as I'm joined by the guys from Comeuppance Reviews for a discussion on the films of Gary Busey. We do our top fives, get in depth on Point Break--including my experiment with beer on my cereal--also discuss how a movie that uses a term like "butthorn" needs to fulfill the promise implicit in doing that, get into my adventures in the "Dog Who Saved Halloween" films, and flesh out what a "Predator vs the Ewoks" movie would look like. You can find the guys at Comeuppance at comeuppancereviews.net, and their podcast of the same name on all the major podcatchers. Don't forget to tune into their pod for our episode on Michael Pare later this month, as that episode is a companion to this one. Note: I was using a new headset for this episode, and there are parts where it picked up my overhead fan, which distorted the audio. I tried to remove it where I could, and it's something I'll rectify in the future, but hopefully it isn't too obtrusive this go-round.

DTVC Extra 37, The Rambo Franchise, "First Blood," "Rambo: First Blood Part II" and "Rambo III"26 Oct 202401:27:50

"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some weeks in addition to the main podcast. In this episode we're starting our look at the Rambo franchise with "First Blood," "Rambo: First Blood Part II," and "Rambo III." For the first one, I look at why this one works so well, and what Stallone's career was like before it. For the next one, I get into how this film helped create the action ecosystem of the mid-80s to the mid-90s, and how it spawned a bunch of DTV clones shot in the Philippines. Finally with the third, I get into where this was off in terms of the Soviet war in Afghanistan, and how that affected its reception.

I start with the Dolph-directed Castle Falls, then move onto a James Nunn double feature of Eliminators and One Shot, then wrap up with Hard Target 2. And since I have no guest to plug, I'll plug my two novels, Chad in Accounting and A Girl and a Gun. Grab one or both on Amazon, either in paperback or Kindle.

In this episode I'm joined once again by Ty and Brett from Comeuppance Reviews as we count down our top 5 Matthias Hues movies. We also get into a bit of why he was such a huge--both figuratively and literally--part of the DTV action golden age of the late 80s and early 90s. You can find the guys of Comeuppance at comeuppancereviews.net, and can check out their podcast on iTunes or most other major podcatchers. Note: this episode was recorded before it was revealed that Bruce Willis was suffering from aphasia. In light of that news, we know now why he was making the number of films he was making, and how the productions were working to mitigate his circumstances to help him through, and that would have changed that part of our conversation.

In this episode, I'm joined by Will from Exploding Helicopter as we discuss the phenomenon of 90s virtual reality action movies, in particular Virtual Combat, Expect No Mercy, and Cyberjack aka Virtual Assassin. We look at the "science" behind the concepts the movies went for, plus I give Will a short tutorial on the hierarchy of American sports degeneracy, and then get bogged down in myriad asides about things like a 50% tax on VR experiences and the plausibility of Americans ever funding a high-speed train between Las Vegas and Los Angeles. You can find Will at https://www.explodinghelicopter.com/, and his podcast on all your major podcatchers.

In this episode I'm joined by Richard Hawes of the DTV Digest as we look at two films by writer/director Steven Kaman, Total Force, and the sequel/reboot/possible mix of both Absolute Force. You can find Richard on the DTV Digest podcast at https://thedtvdigest.podbean.com/

In this episode, I'm joined once again by the guys from Comeuppance Reviews, as we discuss two guys who really played a part in making the 90s what they were, Malibu (Deron McBee) and Evan Lurie. We do a top three for each, plus get into how guys like these, who weren't always the stars, are another reason why that period from the late 80s to early 90s was so superior for DTV action. You can check out Comeuppance Reviews at comeuppancereviews.net, plus their podcast on iTunes and other major pod catchers.

A product of its time, we see early 2000s action in all its glory, from techno music to fancy edits, and to that mix we add a Seagal who wasn't as lazy as he became, but lazy enough.
