From Siegfried to Jay and Back Again: The Peaceful Warrior's Journey 26 Aug 202500:56:11

Send us a text

What happens when you reclaim the identity you've been running from your entire life? Siegfried Jay Tiegs aka "Sig" takes us on a raw, unfiltered journey from childhood trauma to profound self-discovery in this deeply personal conversation.

Born to a German father carrying the weight of post-WWII trauma and a Dutch mother struggling with mental illness, Siegfried's early years were marked by abuse, poverty, and relentless bullying. Hating his unusual name and battling a severe stutter, he rejected "Siegfried" for "JJ" – a small act of self-preservation that would take decades to understand and ultimately reverse.

Through intensive personal development work and deep shadow exploration, Siegfried made a stunning discovery – his birth name, which he had rejected in shame, means "peaceful warrior" in German. The very identity he had been running from was precisely what he had been seeking to become. This epiphany led to a powerful ceremony at Machu Picchu where he reclaimed not just his name, but his authentic self.

Siegfried “Sig” Jay Tiegs, founder of Do Hard Things Nation, Army veteran, endurance athlete, and certified running coach.

A retired Major with 27 years of service in the U.S. Army, a certified trauma coach, high-performance life coach, breathwork facilitator, speaker, and co-author of Life on Offense: A Tactical Guide to Dominate Life and End Mediocrity. His story is one of resilience, from a difficult childhood to combat deployments, from military injuries to ultramarathons and adventure races.

Today, he combines his experience as a soldier, athlete, and trauma-informed healer to help people push past limitations and create lasting transformation. Inside Do Hard Things Wellness Academy, he leads dynamic coaching sessions that focus on:

Commitment: Staying Loyal To Yourself30 Nov 202200:10:45

Send us a text

COMMITMENT: Staying loyal to what you said you were going to do long after the mood has left you.

The  for success is:

Time Frame + Desired Outcome = Goal

Jay Tiegs believes taking on difficult challenges in life with persistence and commitment enables people to find great success in life. He is a Transitioning veteran with over 25 years of service, from private to sergeant first class before commissioning as an officer.  His mantra "Do Hard Things" has enabled him to overcome many struggles in life and achieve success in completing difficult challenges.  This shift in perspective allowed him to go from a directionless teenager who grew up in a fatherless home to a commissioned officer in the United States Army, where he successfully commanded two units that specialize in leadership development of our nation's next generation of emerging military leaders.

He now shares his outlook on personal transformation as a speaker, trainer, and high-performance coach for audiences ranging from elementary school children to executive-level leaders.

Finding Your Direction with Andrew Beattie from Azimuth X26 Oct 202200:57:18

Welcome to the Do Hard Things Podcast with your host Jay Tiegs, Are you ready to amplify and improve your life? Then you are in the right place. On this podcast we have unfiltered conversation with inspiring people who take on challenges and share with us, the wisdom from their journey. We talk about how doing hard things adequately enable all of us to deal with life's struggles and challenges and ultimately improve the quality of our lives.

In this episode, we talk about finding direction with Andrew Beattie from Azimuth X.

Andrew Beattie is an Air Force veteran (AFSOC), Air Traffic Controller, and founder of Azimuth X, a leadership and management training and coaching company. Over the years, he struggled with working for and listening to experiences of bad organizational leadership and management.

Andrew enrolled in countless courses and read countless books to learn more about the respective fields. Eventually, at 18, he had his first management position and started to gain experience. Combining what he learned, his experiences, and finding great mentors, he could piece together the reasons, so many people were having these bad experiences with leaders/managers. It boiled down to two main things: Lack of training and what courses were taught.

Andrew's mission is to move people in the right direction on their leadership and management journeys through proper instruction of time-tested methods, building structure, and continuing education. With his methods, he has built effective and efficient organizational cultures, teams, and individuals.

Running Safety with Taryn Scheidenmantel 21 Sep 202200:42:03

Send us a text

In this episode, I have a great conversation with Taryn Scheidenmantel about a few scary experiences as a runner and why she has become an advocate for running safety.

Taryn is an avid runner, business owner, mother to three boys, and military spouse. She has been running for almost a decade, everything from a 5k to 50k. Most of her training includes running with at least one of my three children, in a jogging stroller.

My very first race was a 5k which she completed pushing her oldest, then eight months old.  She has completed several half marathons with a single stroller, 10k’s with a double stroller, and some of my fastest paces were reached stroller running.

She is a business owner and does real estate investing such as short- and long-term rentals, renovating, etc.  She is currently finishing up a courthouse auction property to be sold, an auction property where my two-year-old and myself bought a property sight unseen.

She trains a lot given the military having there family separated, and she is passing the time by training for half marathon in the near future.

She is bringing awareness to improve awareness and public safety and runners’ safety, specifically female runners’ safety through interviews, safety events and promoting safety awareness.

Helping Millennial Veterans Overcome Challenges with Jenna Carlton 14 Sep 202200:50:10

Send us a text

In this episode, I have an excellent conversation with Jenna Carlton about the Millenial Veterans and the challenges they face in the transition from military service to civilian life.

Jenna joined the Navy in 2013 and began training as an Aerographer’s Mate studying meteorology and oceanography. During her four years, she went underway on several ships and completed a deployment on CVN 75, Harry S. Truman, in efforts of Operation Inherent Resolve.

In 2017, Jenna was honorably discharged and used her GI Bill to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Policy at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. She did a summer internship at the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs where she discovered her passion for helping veterans but was discouraged by the bureaucracy of Congress.

In 2020, while job searching, Navy Veteran Jenna became active in the online veteran community and started a support group for younger veterans and transitioning service members called The Millennial Veterans. The group offers resources, shared experiences, and a lot of laughs through online interactions making veterans feel less isolated and normalizing the hardships of becoming a civilian again. The Millennial Veterans share amazing stories of our veterans and keep positive conversations flowing through weekly interviews on IG Live called Vet Chats.

Fatherhood is Leadership with Ben Killoy

In this episode, I have a great conversation with speaker, author, coach, and veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Ben Killoy, about stepping up into the leadership role of being an engaged father. Ben is the founder of www.militarydad.com and helps veteran men become better fathers.

Bio:
Today's guest, Ben Killoy grew up on a farm in Southern Wisconsin and joined the United States Marine Corps immediately after high school. He transitioned out of the military in 2007 and began the hardest battle of his life, trying to find his place as a Veteran, business owner, leader, and family man.

He faced many struggles along his path including dropping out of college, losing a job, and starting a family. Through his journey to becoming a better dad and finding his purpose. Ben found a passion for coaching others through life transitions and creating an intentional legacy for his family.

Ben now helps other dads find more to life, by redefining the parameters for living and creating a life worth living and leaving behind.

We Do Hard Things with Krystalore Crews

In this episode, I have a great conversation with author, coach, leadership consultant, and veteran of the U.S. Airforce, Krystalore Crews,  about taking on difficult challenges in life and overcoming adversity.  Krystal shares some amazing insights on her from being wheelchair-bound and in a horrible relationship to completing 25 marathons. She is a true inspiration and you will be inspired with her message.

Bio:
Krystalore Crews is a 20-year US Air Force Veteran, former NFL Cheerleader, 25-time Marathoner, Fitness Coach, and Leadership Consultant. Her igniting energy paired with her story of resilience packs a punch! She empowers others to #CrewsBeyondLimits by sharing her experience from the military, cancer, and wheelchair-bound struggles to her days as a competitive professional athlete, dancer, and entrepreneur. She’s a motivational Speaker, Author, Coach, Consultant, and Retreat Leader, on a mission to empower every person on the planet to put themselves first for just 34 minutes per day!

Weekly Wake Up: Leaders are Readers18 Jul 202200:31:18

Weekly Wake Up with Jay Tiegs and Tom Kiat.  This week's topic is Leaders are Readers.  If I could encourage one disciplined action to move the needle forward in your life it would be reading.  Jay and Tom discuss some of their most impactful books they have read.

Tom Kiat is the author of The Ultimate Men’s Playbook, world class performance coach, natural bodybuilding champion and father of 2. He is the founder of League of Elite, a men’s high achievers program and manages the careers of a selection of elite athletes, executives and popular influencers. Tom currently makes his home just off the Pacific Ocean in Costa Rica. Contact Tom: coachtomkiat@gmail.com
