The next entry in The Chuck Granata Pet Sounds Interview Series is Part 1 of Chuck’s chat with Brian Wilson’s favorite drummer, legendary studio maestro Hal Blaine. It’s not hard to understand why Brian worked with him so often: Hal claimed to have participated in over 35,000 sessions and 6,000 singles. His drumming is featured on 150 US top 10 hits, 40 of which went to number one. Chuck’s interview with Hal took place while the latter was living in a retirement community, and the tone is definitely “no shits given” by this point. Hal passed away a few years later in 2019, which makes this posthumously released “Chuck Chat” yet another priceless buried treasure.

We kick off the Chuck Granata Pet Sounds Interview Series at the very beginning…it’s Chuck’s conversation with one of Brian Wilson’s most towering influences, Ross Barbour of The Four Freshmen!  His father Murry took Brian to see the legendary harmony group when he was 14, and he got the opportunity to meet them. The concert and that meeting had a profound effect on young Brian, who said, “My voice was shivering as I was talking to them…I was so in awe of them. It was one of the biggest moments in my life. [Their song] ‘It’s a Blue World’ made me cry. I learned to make four-part harmonies from the Four Freshmen.” Russ passed away back in 2011, which makes this posthumously released interview a particularly priceless buried treasure.

Recorded only two days before the great man’s passing, this audiobook-style episode is a Brian Wilson diary that covers the 27 sessions it took to accomplish one of his great works, a span of six months that kicks off at the moment in December 1965 when he first heard The Beatles’ Rubber Soul and vowed to make the greatest rock record of all time, to Pet Sounds’ release in May 1966. I’m joined by the world’s foremost Petsoundsologist Chuck Granata, author of the incredible book Wouldn’t It Be Nice: Brian Wilson And The Making Of The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds. This episode features a critical cameo by the great Fred Vail.

The next entry in The Chuck Granata Pet Sounds Interview Series is Chuck’s chat with French horn player Alan Robinson, the man whose extraordinary playing graces “God Only Knows.” It’s absolutely incredible what a photographic memory Alan possesses—listening to him speak, it’s as if you’re sitting there right beside him, watching Brian Wilson through the control room glass. This interview is an absolute must-hear for Pet Sounds fans.

At 21, Alan became the youngest contract member of the 20th Century Fox orchestra, where he played on films like The King & I, Carousel and The Sound Of Music. In the mid-1960s, he discovered that "being a busy session player was more lucrative than symphonic work,” which is how he came to be on Pet Sounds. Among his other pop credits are sessions and/or live shows with Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Neil Diamond, Earth, Wind, & Fire, The 5th Dimension, Johnny Mathis, Elton John, and Paul McCartney & Wings.

Chuck Granata’s book Wouldn’t It Be Nice: Brian Wilson And The Making Of The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds is the ultimate dissection of Brian Wilson’s 1966 masterpiece.  Chuck and I wound up diving so deep into the record, we unfortunately had to seek treatment for the bends…yet thankfully it was a risk worth taking, as Discograffiti’s Pet Sounds Deep-Dive Series stands as a unique combination of factual obsession and personal connection.  Episode 4 is an examination of everything you’ll ever need to know about the classic first track on Side 2 of Pet Sounds, often considered The Beach Boys’ greatest song of all time: “God Only Knows.”

The great Bob Mosley—Mr. Blues himself—is known for a soul-belting voice that is a true force of nature.  As a man who’s transcended his share of real blues (a bout of homelessness, a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia that’d sideline the average person), conversely Bob has fronted multiple bands, been idolized by Robert Plant, and played in a late-1970s supergroup with Neil Young called The Ducks.

For my money, Galaxie 500 was the greatest dream pop group that ever existed.  And Dean’s Discograffiti appearance couldn’t possibly be better timed: his brand-new solo LP, That’s The Price Of Loving Me—his best work since 1990 imho—marks the first time he and producer Kramer have collaborated since that very year, after the latter had doused Galaxie 500’s perfect triumvirate of albums in his trademark reverb bath.

One day on a whim about a decade ago, I reached out to incarcerated rapper Big Lurch, with the idea of one day making a documentary about his legitimately crazy tale. He responded with a letter. Then another. And another, all of them beautifully written. And then the calls started coming, sometimes as many as several a day. The documentary never wound up getting off the ground, but the letters and calls—while not always consistent—never stopped.  Until, one day, they did.

For our big Season 2 Finale, Discograffiti’s opted to fudge the timeline just a bit in order to give the proper red-carpet drum-roll gravitas to Season 3, especially since much of the music on The Beach Boys’ “Stack-O-Tracks” was created during this period, by the musicians who’d go on to create 99% of the music created during Season 3.  In this very special episode, the inimitable Don Randi and Wrecking Crew guitarist Tommy Tedesco’s son Denny Tedesco—director of the excellent music docs The Wrecking Crew and The Immediate Family—come together for an overview of the black sheep of The Beach Boys’ 1960s catalog, plus a history of the musicians who made most of the music on it…not to mention most of Pet Sounds & Smile.

This Beach Boys 45 is the band’s final musical communique prior to Pet Sounds’ release, and although it’s indisputably up there with the greatest music they’ve ever created, it died a relative death at the hands of FM radio DJs at the time due to the extremely unconventional and bold series of silences featured in the song. DJs were left scratching their heads, horrified by the prospect of dead air, and so instead resorted to playing “Barbara Ann” off the recently released “Party!” LP, which wound up becoming a far bigger hit. So who better to explain the curious fate of “The Little Girl I Once Knew” than legendary FM radio DJ and Sirius XM mainstay Pat St. John, whose perspective on the undeserved fate of this classic single is a sorely needed one.

The Best Show’s Tom Scharpling has been a Beach Boys obsessive for over 40 years, and the idea behind bringing him on for Party!, The Beach Boys’ oft-dismissed 10th LP that also served as a stopgap measure allowing Brian Wilson to buy time to shape Pet Sounds, was to feature a guest who took this record seriously. In addition, the various unreleased experiments in which Brian was engaging during this era are some of the most fascinating studio visits Brian would ever make in his life, and each and every one is covered in forensic detail (especially in The Director’s Cut edit). Greatness was not just around the corner…it was already here.

By now, Beach Boy Bruce Johnston has retired from being interviewed, so this epic, unheard 2001 interview for Chuck Granata’s Pet Sounds book is absolutely priceless…especially seeing as his fanboy love for Chuck’s Sinatra book wound up contributing to a level of unvarnished honesty that’s super-rare for The Beach Boy universe.

Note: It’s mentioned in this episode that Brian didn’t work with arranger Dick Reynolds again until his unreleased 1977 LP Adult/Child, but in fact they did collaborate again for a single orchestral session which went unreleased, held ostensibly to boost Brian’s confidence prior to getting started on Pet Sounds.
