What No One Tells You About Book Publishing With Ardre Orie from 13th & Joan Publishing House08 Jun 202100:20:07

Send us a text

Let’s imagine that you wrote a book, your first manuscript. Now what? Do you reach out to a big publishing house or an independent one? What type of deal do you get? Do you try to promote the book yourself? How can you distribute it? What should the book look like? To answer all these questions, and many more, we invite Ardre Orie, celebrity ghostwriter and CEO of 13th & Joan Publishing House. Ardre published her first work when she was 10 years old and hasn’t stopped since then. In her publishing company, they provide guidance and support to aspiring authors from the early stages to the finish line. Ardre believes that there are stories that deserve to be told, passionate authors that didn’t find their place with the big publishing houses and not because of their writing skills, and she wants to help to amplify their voices.

Here’s what you’ll learn:

  • How did Ardre discover her passion for writing? A tribute to the women in her family and community.
  • What does a publisher do? Ardre explains the wide range of work that a publisher can do, from helping the author with the book concept to developing a distribution strategy and the reader experience.
  • What makes you publishable? For Ardre, there are audiences overlooked by the big publishing houses, with no relation to the quality of their work. At 13th & Joan, they are looking for stories that need to be shared.
  • You’ve got your first manuscript, what comes next? Ardre walks us through the next steps that a publishing house follows once they get a manuscript. It’s about analyzing the market and developing a distribution strategy aligned with the author’s goal and brand.
  • What is a publishing deal? There are several types. Ardre explains how these agreements usually work.  Who has the copyright? What is the difference between a big publishing house and an independent company? Which one would be best for you?
  • Recommendations for first-time authors that are looking to get published.

She has worked with Disney, Starz, Saatchi & Saatchi, among others. • Let’s talk about work culture. The unhappiness of workers is related to the work culture. Are they feeling valued? Do they have the tools they need, the time? For Mindy, employers must develop their work culture, and be clear about how they do things, and employees should think about if that culture, the system they have in place, matches their personal needs.
  • Mindy talks about promotion and a salary increase. What are you really after? It’s important that employers and employees know about growth opportunities in the company, and how to support and train new leaders. This will establish lasting relationships and loyalty.
  • How to be a team member? If you are thinking about starting a new job, or you’re already working, Mindy recommends that you figure out what you want, what is your goal, and what do you need to keep you satisfied and keep moving in the company. This has to be an open conversation and can change through the years.
  • Finding a new job. The perfect resume is the honest one, you can be aspirational, but that doesn’t mean that you lie about your experience. There are many careers related to Advertising and Marketing, so Mindy shares a few tips to help you figure out the right one for you.

Every Moment Counts: Learning About Productivity and Time Management with Alexis Haselberger15 Apr 202100:20:58

Send us a text

Have you ever felt like the day went by, and you didn’t get much done? Or maybe you looked at all the things that you have to do and thought: I don’t have enough time for this. If so, then this episode is for you. Today’s we have Alexis Haselberger, time management and productivity coach, who will teach us that we do have time, much more than what we think, we just need to learn how to be more efficient.  It’s all about developing a strategy that works for us and helps us get things done without feeling stressed.  Alexis has worked with individual clients of all ages and with companies like Google, Lyft, Workday, Capital One, Upwork, among others. In this episode, she shares some tips and tricks that will help us to start using our time with intention.

Highlights:

  • Alexis works with people to help them be more efficient, this means, help them find a way to systematize things and do more with their time, so they won’t feel stressed out because they had so much to do and little time to do it, or because there’s a mismatch between the efforts and the results.
  • What is it on your plate? Alexis knows that every person is different, and therefore, the time management and productivity plan has to be created according to who you are.
  • Track your time! For Alexis, the first step is keeping a detailed record of what you do every day, and how much time you invest in it.
  • Use your time with intention. For Alexis, productivity has to do with choosing. Deciding what to do with your time, with the list of things that you have to do is very different from just letting the day happen to us, even if we decide to take a time off and disconnect from work. You’ll feel that you have accomplished more when you start to plan and choose.
  • The dopamine hit: Alexis defines this as the satisfaction you get when you cross things on your list. There isn’t a universal strategy that works for everyone. Each person can have their own strategy and be equally efficient.
  • Over the years, Alexis listened to clients say that planning and standardizing procedures took a lot of time. But they failed to realize that it was an investment for the future: you must take some time now to plan, standardize, and create templates, but in the future, it will save you time, it will make your work and others easier.
  • Alexis and Lara geek out about tips and tricks to help you organize your work and be more efficient with your time.

What do you think when someone says “networking”? Do you feel stressed or anxious? Sara Alepin found out that many people felt this way, and that’s why she founded District Bliss, a company for business owners that want to expand their network. Sara is an extrovert with a facility to make connections, and so she put her skills to good use on behalf of others. She knows that networking can be fun and that every event is an opportunity to find people to work or collaborate with.

Highlights:

  • Sara created District Bliss as a way to connect people. Sara knows that every event is a networking opportunity, and it can have fun and creative activities.
  • First impressions matter! Sara encourages you to do some research, choose the events that interest you, that speak to you. Then, you want to give a positive and memorable first impression. For Sara, it is ok if you talk about something not so conventional, or if you try to get a deeper conversation to know the other person. Don’t be afraid to be real.
  • Are you an introvert, or don’t know how to approach people? Sara’s got your back. She is an extrovert that looks for the introvert in any event and then manages to introduce herself and this person to other groups or circles of people.
  • Sara notices that many people are afraid to say the wrong thing. In her experience,  it is important to pay attention to how we say something instead of what we say.
  • Sara knows that we, as humans, and especially as business owners, are constantly evolving, reinventing ourselves and our brand. And so it is ok to move forward and meet new people that are good for you at that moment, even if you disconnect from others.
  • Are you ready to do some networking? Once you have checked the event, the brand, and decided that it does speak to you, you are ready to go. Sara recommends having a document with your personal links, being prepared will make you feel more comfortable. Paid attention to what others are asking, and don’t be afraid to ask for what you need. Be honest with your intentions, and have an open mind.

Tell Me a Story: How to Communicate and Captivate Your Audience with Hillary Rea30 Mar 202100:25:02

Send us a text

Download Podcast Transcript

Stories are important. A good story can captivate us until we lose track of time. But can we use a story, and therefore, storytelling in other environments, like…a company? Hillary Rea thinks we can, and even more: we should. She’s the founder of Tell Me A Story, a communication consulting business that teaches the art of storytelling to entrepreneurs, leaders, and anyone that wants to engage and connect with others in a different and more lasting way. If you want to be remembered, use storytelling.

Highlights:

  • Storytelling is an art form and a powerful communication tool. Hillary tells us how she discovered and started to practice it.
  • For Hillary, storytelling is a way to captivate your audience, people are more likely to listen to you and understand what you are saying if you tell them a story. And this is a skill that you can learn and improve over the years.
  • Hillary explains part of the elements of a story. Every story has a beginning, a middle, and an end. Once you have this structure, it is time to choose those moments or details that contribute to the story and focus on them.
  • You don’t have to be funny. Hillary knows that not all stories have to end with a joke. Humor has different layers, and it is ok if you want to tell a story and tell how you feel, without being funny.
  • Hillary teaches companies and leaders how to use storytelling to communicate and engage with their teams. Storytelling allows having a connection between coworkers and bosses.
  • We all have stories to tell. Hillary found out that many people didn’t want to tell their story because it didn’t have the perfect ending, and she works to let everyone know that you don’t have to have that perfect ending, or don’t have to meet your goals to have something to tell. You have to find what you want to say.
  • Hillary gives us three reasons why to use storytelling and examples on how to use it.

We all know how important networking is. But did you know that it could be delicious? Nicole Dillon works in marketing and event planning, and she is also a bruncher. Combining the best of two worlds, Nicole created Women Who Brunch, a community of women who love networking, and learning from each other over brunch.

Highlights:

  • How did it all start? Nicole recounts everything that happened to her in 2013 that led her to start Women Who Brunch. It was a need to make real connections with people, not just getting a business card at some marketing event and forgetting about it over the weekend, and a need to meet and support women.
  • Making networking and learning a delicious experience. Nicole explains how Women Who Brunch works and what it means to everyone involved: it isn’t just an opportunity to learn, it is also an opportunity to make real connections, friendships even.
  • Looking for the human connection. For Nicole, in today’s world, we have so many ways to connect with each other, but it seems that we don’t know how to communicate with one another: haters on social media, the obsession over the number of followers, insecurities that we might have before posting. You need to find people (and content), that resonate with you, that inspire you.
  • Don’t let social media bring you down! There’s a thin line between finding content that inspires you and content that makes you compare yourself to others and feel down about it. Nicole had her fair share of those, but she was able to change her point of view: stop thinking about what others are doing, and focus on your story, yourself and your community.

Claire has traveled across the country teaching women how to negotiate, whether it is a raise, holidays, a promotion, nothing is off the table when you are looking for better compensation.

Highlights:

  • Claire found a way, as an individual, to fight the wage gap: doing salary negotiations. Until we can change the system, the least we can do is make sure we are being paid what we deserve.
  • Put your mind into it: don’t be afraid to ask. You are the only one able to speak about your job and accomplishments, make your case. And think about what you are going to do or ask if they say no.
  • For Claire, it’s not all about the money. There are other compensations that you could ask for that can be useful to you, to your career.
  • In order to have a better negotiation, Claire suggests that you imagine all the reasons why your employee might say no, and how you are going to address that. And prioritize, between all the things that you want to get, which one is more important?
  • How to move to the next level? First, think of what you want and how you can get there. Claire starts by asking questions to people that already had a similar experience: what challenges did they have? How could you resolve them? What skills should you have? And when you finally speak to your employer, have some suggestions about things that you could do to get where you want to be.
  • Let them know how much your work is worth. Claire starts any business relationship by establishing her value. It doesn’t mean that she is not open to negotiate it, but it’s important that your client knows the real cost of it. Even if you will be doing something for free.
  • How to get ready for the negotiation? Besides all the things that you should already have in mind, all the research that you should do about your work, Claire wants you to practice. Make a script, repeat it, and watch yourself, learn when you are getting nervous, what does it look like? Don’t fight it, accept it.

If you want to know more about Claire, you can visit her website or go to Ladies Get Paid. You can also follow her on Instagram.

Download Podcast Transcript

Today’s guest is Sheila Nazarian. Some might know her for one of her several services she provides, from plastic surgery to a platform where you can find business advice. Some might know her for the Netflix show, Skin Decision: Before and After. But today, she is here to talk about her family history, her personal expectations, and how she sees and manages her work. Let’s meet Sheila.

Highlights:

  • Sheila Nazarian has a very interesting family history. It’s an underdog story, about a family that had to escape from Iran in the ‘80s and the risk of being deported during the Carter administration.
  • Growing up in a different country and culture, Sheila had to overcome impostor syndrome, and learned to do things for herself, and not to please somebody else. Now she knows her strengths and weaknesses and is not afraid to be open about both.
  • Who is at the thanksgiving table of your life? Thanks to the Netflix show, Sheila received positive messages from people that didn’t know her, but she also discovered who is interested in seeing her fail. She decided not to invest her energy in those people, you shouldn’t care about their opinion.
  • As a plastic surgeon, Sheila cares to know about her patients and why they are interested in doing a surgery, to be sure that they are doing it for the right reasons. Sheila sees a plastic surgery as a way to take care of yourself, like eating healthy or working out.
  • Working with patients from different parts of the world, Sheila knows and understands that there are some cultural restrictions in the way men and women see themselves, or if they even should be getting plastic surgery. She knows that being open and talking about the procedures and experiences can help to gain their trust and make them feel comfortable with their decision.
  • Managing your team is not easy. Sheila knows her strengths and weaknesses, and that helped her to delegate. And if someone is not the right fit, you have to let them go, before it affects the rest of the team.

If you want to know more about Sheila and her services, you can visit The Skin Spot, Nazarian Plastic Surgery or Nazarian Institute. You can also follow her on Instagram

You probably heard the phrase “think outside the box.” And our guest of today, Van Lai-DuMone has taken it to the next level. She believes that creativity can (and should) be brought into the workplace. With her company, Work Smart Advantage, she creates a plan to make the work environment a fun and creative place, as a way to promote team development, problem-solving, and leadership.

Highlights:

  • Creativity is good for your company! When Van started in the corporate world, she found out that training, evaluations, everything was…dry. And there wasn’t any retention of information after that.
  • For Van, there’s a difference between team building and team development. It’s not just about having fun in the workplace, it's also about learning to work together, know what each one of us can bring to the table. Creativity is a way to lower our barriers and be heard.
  • How to make people feel attached to your company mission? Van knows that most of the time, employees don't feel connected to the company mission, so it’s important to change that. Start working with your staff to see what their missions and values are, find a common ground to build from where to start to build.
  • Van believes that team building is even more important now, when many people are working from home. It’s important that leaders create the space for connection, for people getting to know each other.
  • Being a Leader and growing inside the company. Van discusses how usually people very good at their job get a promotion that they might not want or not are prepared for: being a manager. People need support and training for this role. And is this what they want? What do they want or expect from a promotion? Let them have a say on this.
  • Van shares with us three tips to start bringing creativity in the workplace.

Building Your Digital Persona with Nicole Tremaglio09 Feb 202100:22:21

Send us a text

Being part of the digital world and being noticed easily may sound like a challenge to many, but what if it wasn’t actually that hard? Our guest today is Nicole Tremaglio, digital platform adviser for fitness and lifestyle personalities, speaker, and dancer. In her own words, also a brand architect! Nicole knows everything about building digital personas, being your own boss and embracing our past in order to boost your presence.

Highlights:

  • Nicole talks about her own digital persona: how it evolved and how it is still evolving. She refers to how she tries to do her best to show her full self, although she considers having a “disjointed identity”—she integrated her personal brand with her business persona.
  • The digital world is always evolving and we have the right to evolve with it; although we may not always feel comfortable with it. The pandemic left us the certainty that we always have to be on the cutting edge of technology.
  • Nicole refers to the importance of being true to yourself, and explains how she dived into entrepreneurship. When doing so, she decided not to have a corporate identity, and determined she could evolve to a different version of herself.
  • What you went through in your life makes you who you are today; Nicole believes you should embrace your present and don’t be so  hard on your past self.
  • Nicole is curious about the process of knowledge and learning in general: she believes this is what separates successful and fulfilled adults from the ones who “float around.” Being committed in learning makes you more engaged in everything you do!
  • There is a lack of mentorship lately inside the work environment: Nicole strongly believes that we should learn to think outside the box and solve problems or different issues by ourselves, instead of waiting for our boss to do so.
  • Nicole gives us some tips for leaving the corporate world and finally jumping into entrepreneurship.

Today’s guest, Lauren Ammon, is here to explain this issue and how to overcome it. • The current generation of younger kids have huge expectations imposed on them which society expects them to meet, and Lauren explains how it shouldn’t be that way.
