Compensation & Remote Work vs Compensation & In Office Work27 May 202400:11:20

What we talked about on this episode:

This episode was inspired by a TT video I saw where someone shared their remote compensation, hybrid comp, and in-office comp expectations.

It was said they ask for $20k more for in-office jobs and the person dueting it seemed shocked.

My response was good for them BUT that’s it?

Let’s talk about it.

Should you have different compensation expectations for a remote job vs a job you would be required to go into the office?

For simple math.

Let’s say your hourly rate is $40/hour.

Your commute:

1 hour per day, 30 minutes each way.

$40 x 5 x 50 weeks per year

= $10,000

15 miles each way, so that’s 30 miles per day round trip.

30 x 5 x 50 = 7500 miles you’re putting on your car each year.

The federal mileage rate right now is $.67/mile and at 7,500 miles we are looking at:

$5,025

Time and mileage just for your commute is now at:

$15,025 per year

Food:

Buy lunch 2x a week and bring lunch 3x a week

$10, which is conservative for a meal these days

$10 x 2 per week x 50 weeks per year

=1,000 extra on food

Between commute and food, we are now at $16,025

Clothes:

Unless you can wear the same shit you can at home, in the office, you have to account for additional clothing expenses.

Let’s say $2,000 a year on the lowest end.

Now we are at $18,025 just in expenses for commute, food, and clothing.

We haven’t factored anything in for the inconvenience. These are simply expenses.

Truly, do the math.

What makes sense?

Hybrid = I’d do 75% of whatever the in-office number you come to is.

If companies are hell-bent on getting people back into the office, awesome, compensate accordingly.

Thank you for taking the time to listen, watch, and be here! I appreciate you!

  1. Let’s take this offline: discuss it later and/or in a different setting

  2. Touch base: briefly connect or update on a topic

  3. Put a pin in it: postpone or temporarily set aside a discussion

  4. Think outside the box: consider unconventional or creative ideas

  5. Circle back: Return to topic later for further discussion

  16. Play hardball: Adopt a tough or uncompromising approach.

  17. Push the envelope: Challenge limits or try new and innovative approaches.

  18. Put lipstick on a pig: Attempt to make something unattractive appear better than it is.

  19. Running it up the flagpole: Presenting an idea for consideration or feedback.

  20. Table that for now: Postpone discussion until later.

  21. Under the radar: Happening without attracting attention or going unnoticed.

If someone hits you with one, ask clarifying questions!

Thank you for taking the time to listen, watch, and be here! I appreciate you!

Videos in Job Applications27 Feb 202000:10:22

Videos in job applications are becoming more and more popular and more and more common.

I've seen it in 2 ways:

  1. Built in as part of your application (integrated into the ATS)
  2. Asked to go to another platform and copy/paste the video link

Pros:

  1. More personal
  2. Can assess potential culture fit better
  3. Understand someone's personality before an interview
  4. Get specific questions answered
  5. Unique ... for now
  6. Saves time
  7. Reduces costs
  8. Can record if needed
  9. Consistent process for everyone

Cons:

  1. Could be discriminatory to conscious or unconscious bias
  2. Not appropriate for all jobs
  3. People can re-record
  4. Takes time for candidates
  5. A good portion of candidates won't do it

Tips:

  1. Be professional
  2. Dress as you would for an in person interview
  3. Make sure your background is clean and presentable
  4. Re-record if you need to and are able to
  5. Let your personality shine
  6. Be sure to directly answer the questions asked
  7. Answer the question thoroughly without rambling or going on tangents
  8. Make an outline before you hit record
  9. Watch/edit if possible

What To Do When You Are Passed Over For A Promotion 13 Feb 202000:12:38

It certainly doesn't feel good to be passed over for a promotion.

Don't get bitter, get better!

Did you apply for the role? Or make your desire for the role known?

Tips:

  1. Express gratitude for being considered
  2. Get feedback from your manager
  3. If the hiring manager is not your manager, get feedback from that person as well
  4. Figure out what you need to improve on and make a plan
  5. Have a candid conversation around expectations and when you should achieve certain tasks / goals to be eligible for a promotion
  6. Ask yourself if this was a blessing in disguise
  7. Stay focused and engaged
  8. Determine what's next
  9. Track your progress and accomplishments
  10. Evaluate how long you've been in your role with no promotion to help determine if you should look externally
  11. Process and move through any negative emotions so you don't become bitter or resentful
  12. Evaluate if that promotion is / was the type of work you still want to move into
  13. Be positive and welcoming to the person who got the role

Resume Tips When Changing Careers 06 Feb 202000:10:39

Changing careers can be challenging.

Before you make the change, understand what is sparking the change.

Let's review the 4 main types of resumes:

  1. Chronological resume
  2. Functional resume
  3. Combination resume
  4. Job specific / targeted resume

When changing careers we want to combine 3 and 4.

Combining the combination resume while targeting specific roles because recruiters will still want to know your work history.

Make sure you also highlight your education/certificates/training as it relates to the new career you're looking to move into.

When making a change try and talk to people who has made your particular career change. Also try and talk to people who hire the roles you're looking to get.

As you might know, I'm not sure huge on cover letters however a great cover letter is going to be key when changing careers.

How To Create A Career Elevator Pitch03 Feb 202000:06:25

Fun question from a listener!

This is going to be similar to the episode released on 2/28/19 where we talk about how to answer the interview question 'tell me about yourself' if you'd like to check it out!

Elevator pitches are meant to be short and sweet. They are focused and we are not rambling in our pitches.

Structure:

  1. 50k foot view of your background
  2. 10k foot view digging a little deeper
  3. Area of expertise / niche
  4. What you're passionate about in your field

Micromanagers aren't always doing it just to be jerks. They may not even know they are coming across this way. Often they have learned bad habits from other bad leaders. Other times they are under stress and aren't sure how to deal.

Tips:

  1. Try to give them the benefit of the doubt
  2. Try to explain how you felt during a specific time the micro managing was too much
  3. Offer a counter solution
  4. Accept that it may never change and create a plan
  5. Get support from your team
  6. Inform, inform, inform
  7. Think ahead
  8. Uncover the fears
  9. Set boundaries
  10. Evaluate yourself and your work

How To Interview A Potential Employer For The Right Culture Fit09 Jan 202000:12:03

It is not fun or cool to be excited about a new job just to start and find out it is terrible.

Sometimes we can avoid it.

Other times we can't, people are really good liars.

Questions to help assess culture fit:

  • Ask all the people you interview with why they like working for the company
  • If you talk to people who will be on the team you'll be working on, ask them to describe the team dynamics
  • Research
  • Go through your network, do you know anyone who works / worked there?
  • Make sure you get to meet/interview with the right people (future manager, peers, people you'll partner with, etc.)
  • Know what culturally hasn't been a fit for you and ask professional questions around those specific items
  • Don't be afraid to ask follow up questions to answers in number 6
  • Peer question - what's on thing you would change in your role and why

Stay or go?

It depends!

  • How bad is it
  • Benefits to staying?
  • How miserable are you?
  • How long has it been?
  • Confidence in avoiding this in your next role?

Let’s Talk About Your 2020 Goals02 Jan 202000:13:59

2020 is going to be an exciting and amazing year!

Before we set new goals think about your current role and reflect on:

  • How do you feel on Sunday nights?
  • How do you feel about the work you do everyday?
  • How do you feel about the team you work with?
  • How do you feel about your leader?
  • How do you feel about the organization you work for?

Feel free to make that pros / cons list :)

Now let's think about what you would change / improve:

  • Sunday nights
  • Work you do everyday
  • Team
  • Leader / manager / boss
  • Organization

Let's dream now. Perfect world scenario, you have everything you want, no limitations, truly perfect scenario, what would your career look like:

  • Sunday nights
  • Work you do everyday
  • Team
  • Leader / manager / boss
  • Organization

Super nerds! Grab an excel or flip chart. Put your answers together. Maybe put some categories to it.

  • Current facts / info
  • Feelings
  • Change / improve
  • Pros
  • Cons
  • Perfect world scenario
  • Etc.

Laying it all out, you can see the various buckets / areas. This also allows you to see the full picture and identify goals. And also the gaps. The gaps can help identify what your goals could be.

Make sure your goals are SMART

S - Specific

M - Measurable

A - Attainable / Achievable

R - Relevant

T - Time based

Now reverse engineer your goals. Work them backwards and map out each step!

Finally Landed Your Dream Job … and It’s a Nightmare - What To Do19 Dec 201900:14:10

It's not unheard of to get what you think is your dream job and you realize it's not great.

Or worse, you hate it.

If you've been here for a hot minute you know I'm an advocate for people being happy in their jobs and careers.

What to do if you've found yourself in this situation:

  • Take a deep breath
  • Try and find the positive
  • Find the disconnect
  • Chat with your manager / leader
  • Figure out if whatever you don't like is permanent or temporary
  • What enticed you to take the job?
  • Is there anything that could make you happy with your current situation?
  • How long has it been?
  • Soooooo nothing is perfect. Are you being realistic?
  • Are your expectations realistic?
  • Is it the job that sucks or the environment?
  • Do you just need a vacay?

What you can do to possibly avoid this situation in the future:

  • Be thorough in the interview process
  • Be honest when you're interviewing
  • Look at reviews online
  • Is there anyone in your network that has worked for the organization?
  • Do a social media search

What To Do When You Have Lost Your Job / Career / Work Passion12 Dec 201900:16:26

We absolutely need to be passionate about something!

Could be in your job, also could be in your personal life.

Something that fuels us.

Sometimes we are going through some hard stuff and work and our passion fizzles out.

That is ok

What we need to evaluate is:

  • Is this funk or fizzle permanent?
  • Is it worth riding it out / sticking it out / seeing it through?
  • Do your have other passions outside of work?

I've had jobs that fizzle from a passion perspective, find other things!

  • Learning
  • Getting outside our comfort zone
  • Exercise
  • Podcasting
  • Puppies
  • Etc etc

There are also times where the passion increases at work so we may have to slow down on passions outside of work.

Tips:

  1. Stay positive
  2. What were you passionate about, if anything?
  3. What are you currently passionate about?
  4. Is there anything from your personal life you can incorporate into work?
  5. Have a transparent conversation with your leader
  6. Stop the grind
  7. What changed?
  8. Are you just bored? Or have you truly lost your passion?
  9. Take your time off, use it, for real!
  10. Make a plan to re-light your fire
  11. Hard question: are you getting in your own way?
  12. Find a coach or mentor

What To Do When You Haven’t Adequately Prepared For An Interview28 Nov 201900:11:07

It's probably going to be fine.

However, if it's not, accept that as a lesson learned.

Tips:

  1. Ask good questions
  2. Take 2-3 minutes and read the company's about page
  3. If asked a question you can't answer because you didn't prep, own it
  4. Send a thorough follow up that shows you did your homework after the interview
  5. Stay confident
  6. Be early to your interview
  7. Build rapport with who you are interviewing with
  8. Be genuine and authentic

How To Deal With Constant Change At Work25 Nov 201900:12:11

Constant change is not easy.

Can feel like a rollercoaster ride.

Sometimes we will feel like we want to tap out and get off the ride.

I get it!!

Change can come in many ways:

  • Corporate transformations
  • Acquisitions
  • Mergers
  • Re-structure
  • Re-org
  • Layoffs
  • Hiring freezes
  • New leadership
  • Pay increase freezes
  • Opening and closing offices
  • Hyper growth
  • Lack of structures / systems

Tips:

  1. Deep breath
  2. Re-focus
  3. Set up ways to remind yourself of #2
  4. Try to understand why all the changes are happening
  5. Make your skillset known
  6. Stay the course
  7. Offer to help
  8. Be genuine and authentic
  9. Pause, slow down, reflect
  10. Evaluate - with all the changes, is this still a good fit for you?
  11. Keep positive / upbeat / optimistic
  12. Take the opportunity to learn new things
  13. Determine if you want to or need to set up new goals / change course
  14. Talk through and resolve any issues or struggles
  15. Understand if what you are measured on, your KPIs, are changing or staying the same
  16. Recognize when you've hit your max - take a break
  17. Prepare for what you can

Things to know:

  • Change is the only constant

What To Do When Your Colleagues Make More Than You / Unequal Pay or Compensation21 Nov 201900:17:06

It is not cool.

Been there. There was a guy who made more than me, which made it feel worse.

Tips:

  1. Take a deep breath
  2. Decide, we have 3 options
    1. Leave it alone
    2. Ask for more
    3. Leave for a better paying job
  3. Do your research
  4. Create a plan to stay engaged and motivated
  5. Figure out if you want to approach your boss or your HR team
  6. Decide what range you'll be happy with
  7. Take time to feel the feels

During your conversations:

  • Focus on you, your qualifications and what you bring to the table
  • Keep it positive and upbeat
  • Know your stuff
  • Be confident

Don't: bring up specifics about your colleagues

What you need to know:

  • You are amazing
  • You deserve to be compensated fairly
  • You are worth it

Accepted An Offer, 'Perfect' Job Calls, Now What?17 Oct 201900:09:14

This episode is inspired by an article I submitted for on rewire.org, here is a link:

https://www.rewire.org/work/turn-down-accepted-job-offer/

What to do when you have an accepted an offer but you just  got a call from another company that you were really interested in interviewing with.

  1. Were you already in process with this company?
  2. Comparing opportunities - what are the pros / cons? Can you rank them? Top choice?
  3. Why did they call? Interview? Offer? Follow up? Was there a delay? Was there a reason for that delay?
  4. Have you started the new job? Like it? Not yet?
  5. What role will be the better long term best career choice?

Some people may ask, can this be avoided?

Will I Get The Job? Did My Interview Go Well?03 Oct 201900:10:22

It's hard to say for sure whether or not someone will get a job. However we can chat about the signs your interview went well!
Positive signals the interview went well (should have multiple of these)

  1. Recruiter or hiring manager re-aligns compensation with you
  2. The company follows up with you before you follow up with them
  3. Asking when you'd be available to start
  4. The team (usually recruiting) genuinely wants to hear your feedback
  5. Company is trying to get you in for next steps ASAP
  6. Asking for references
  7. Explaining the offer approval process or background check details
  8. Asked about your interest in the job
  9. Asked if you have any other interviews or offers
  10. Team gives clarity of role, responsibilities and day to day
  11. You feel you're being sold to (company or role)
  12. Your interview runs late
  13. The person you followed up with actually responds to your email
  14. Basic wording (you will vs you would)
  15. Body language
  16. Intro to other team members
  17. Tour
  18. Towards the end of the interview conversation turns more casual
  19. The team sets clear expectations on when you should expect to hear back about next steps
  20. Interviewer ties your specific experience to how it could be helpful in the role
  21. Company offers to pay for flight for an interview
  22. The good bye (see you soon, when we talk again, etc)

What To Do When You’re Moved Into a New Role That You Are Not Passionate About05 Sep 201900:08:43

We live in a world of mergers and acquisitions. Restructures and reorgs.

If and when this happens it's a great opportunity to do some reflecting.

Tips:

  1. Ask yourself: do you hate this new role or just lack passion?
  2. What did you like about your old role?
  3. What motivated in your previous position?
  4. What were you passionate about in your previous role?
  5. Is there anything you like about your new role?
  6. Is this a permanent change?
  7. In general what are you passionate about?
  8. What gets you excited to get up and go to work?
  9. Can you shift the culture to make the role / team more fun?
  10. Focus on the positive
  11. Do other people feel the same way?
  12. Might be time to brush the dust off your resume and adventure into a new role
  13. Establish daily / weekly goals
  14. Can you learn something new in this role?
  15. Is your new leader someone you could have an open, candid conversation with?
  16. If you stick it out, what are your career growth options? Could it be worth it?
