47. Everything's Coming Up Olli Haaskivi! Making the Transition to TV/Film
22 Jan 2024
00:48:51
"My feeling about auditioning, regardless of the medium, has always beenāthis is my opportunity to actually play this part. I don't want to feel like I'm auditioning for something that might happen later. I want to feel like I'm fully doing it now. That lent itself nicely to auditioning for television and film,Ā because the job might be tomorrow morning."
Olli Haaskivi is an actor who soon after graduating with a musical theatre degree, found his passion and skills aligned himself with a career in TV and film. Today, we talk with Olli about how he made that transition, what he feels are the tools you need to audition for TV/film successfully, and how he's developed a thriving coaching business helping other MT actors get started onscreen.

08 Jan 2024
00:44:54
"We think we know emotion because we are playing other characters, but most of the people I work with aren't actually that tuned into their own emotional body. Imagine how this will affect our art, the more we can come into our body and feel our own feelings and our own intuition and our own guidance and then bring that into our art."
Analisa Leaming is a performer turned "soulful coach" for actors, the host of the podcast A Balancing Act, and she's passionate about supporting Ā artists mentally, emotionally, and spiritually as they pursue their dreams. Today's conversation is all about the roadblocks we encounter and breakthroughs we can make as we strive to live a life more aligned with our creativity and our dreams.

"Very likely, people that you don't think are taking note, are! And it's good reason toĀ keep putting one foot in front of the other." In episode 7, Chelsea shared her experience as a BFA student, her journey to Broadway, and what led her to help co-found BVC as we know it.Ā Today we're diving deeper into Chelsea's Broadway career as a vocal coach, working on productions like The Phantom of the Opera, School of Rock, and Jesus Christ Superstar. Plus, she's sharing her best advice for aspiring Broadway performers.
Cynthia remembers Bre's University of Michigan audition as one of her favorites of all time. It stands out because it wasn't polished, it wasn't overly trained - she was just a raw vessel of talent.Ā She is proof that you don't need years and years of expert training, classes, and experience to get started in this industry.
Among Bre's many credits, she's most recently performed as Catherine of Aragon in the Broadway production of SIX. Join us for a conversation about mental health, self-care, and managing the in-between-jobs periods as an actor with over a decade in the business.
Today we're chatting with BVC intern and (nearly) college BFA grad Emily Baggarly, and she's sharing the five things she and her family did to make the college audition process easier!

Can you imagine booking your Broadway debut from a single self-tape? For so many actors, it often feels like sending in tapes is sending them into the void. But Delphi Borich is a testament to what great audition work over time can lead to. "It wasn't just one tape that got me the job. It was years of them seeing me in completely different capacities." Today's conversation is all about creating a strong body of work, the super powers of understudies, and the logistics and learning curves of being a working actor.
Perhaps one of the greatest myths singers grow up hearing is "belting is bad for you!" If that were true, how could so many incredible musical theatre singers make decades long careers out of belting on stage, eight times a week? Granted, belting is a highly demanding style of singing, and there are certainly things to avoid if you want to do it well and have a lasting singing career. Today we're talking all about healthy belting. Is it possible? And what should you to avoid in order to achieve it?Ā

"I actually know my songs are good. I believe that for myself, independently. I had to tell myself: you're allowed to start saying this to yourself. It's not arrogance, it's not even confidence, it's just knowing, it's peace."
After 20 years in the industry, this is what Gavin Creel finally starting saying to himself.Ā
"I spent a lot more time getting my value and my worth from outside forces. But the pandemic took that away. There were no outside forces. There was no applause. There was no positive feedback loop."
For many of us, we know Gavin as a Tony Award (and Olivier Award) Winner, star of stage and screen. But in our podcast interview with him, Gavin says he "doesn't know who that is."

00:36:48
Applying to musical theatre programs can feel like a never-ending roller coaster. Itās completely overwhelming! So itās not uncommon that some essential parts of the process get overlooked. Today weāre shining a light on 7 things families and students overlook during the musical theatre college audition process. And we're joined by our head coach for BVC Aspire, Julie Kavanagh!

This conversation with Emily Kristen Morris is all about tackling limiting beliefs, pursuing a side hustle you love, and of course, what it's like to fly during Defying Gravity! Emily Kristen Morris is an NYC-based actor, singer, dancer, vocal instructor, and popular online content creator (1.6 Million followers on TikTok). Emily is currently the Elphaba standby on the Broadway national tour of WICKED. Emily received her voice certification through the Institute For Vocal Advancement (IVA), and received her BFA in musical theatre from the University of Cincinnati; College-Conservatory of Music (CCM).
There's a classic saying in our industry that if there's anything else you love to do as much or more than theater, do that. In my opinion, that advice is outdated. We've seen time and time again that some of the most successful performers are multi-passionate multi-hyphenates. They wear a lot of hats. Today we're talking about the benefits of having interests, hobbies, and even careers outside of, and in addition to theater.Ā
