Scary, Funny Books and Finding Light in Hard Seasons with Theory Knight (E195)04 Feb 202600:36:59

Send us a text

In today’s episode, I’m chatting with Theory Knight—a sci-fi lover, aspiring pilot, and thoughtful storyteller with a deep love of humor, humanity, and connection. Theory dreams of flying someday, loves Hawaii, and believes in the therapeutic value of road trips. She’s only organized because of technology, is thankful for good vacuum cleaners, and would absolutely rent an apartment inside Canadian Tire if they’d let her.

We’re here today to discuss her new book, Jingle Bells, Sasquatch Smells, and the stories that help reset our nervous systems—especially during hard seasons. Theory’s reading life leans toward what she calls scary, funny books: stories that hold darkness with humor and leave you feeling more grateful for what you have.

Episode Highlights:

  • What Canadian Tire is (for those of us who didn’t grow up with it).
  • Why being among others during hard times can be incredibly grounding.
  • How humor helps us sit with scary or uncomfortable moments.
  • Setting boundaries with dark books and knowing your limits.
  • The sci-fi stories that shaped Theory’s reading life.
  • Writing with intention and bringing only what you truly love into a book.
  • Working creatively with a spouse (her husband is her cover designer, go check them out).

Writing the Stories We Carry: Leadership, Legacy, and a Lifetime of Dad-isms with Susan L. Combs (E194)28 Jan 202600:33:24

Send us a text

In today’s episode, I’m chatting with Susan L. Combs. Susan is the President of Combs & Company, a full-service insurance brokerage firm based in New York City. She started the company at just 26 years old with a drive to “do more, do better.” A self-described Missouri girl in a New York world, Susan draws on the lessons of her Midwestern upbringing and more than two decades in NYC in her book, Pancakes for Roger. The insights in these pages come from family, friends, colleagues, and life in general—but the most important teachings are from her late father. When she’s not running her business or helping others navigate challenges, you can find her flipping tires at her CrossFit gym, cheering on the Missouri Tigers, KC Chiefs, and Royals, or slaying the dragons that have come her way.

Episode highlights:

  • What it really looks like to own four businesses and manage them with intention.
  • How a book that began with one chapter about her father became a collection of his wisdom—“Dad-isms”
  • Why writing Pancakes for Roger pushed Susan far outside her comfort zone and how that stretch sparked growth and change.
  • The importance of having creative outlets, even (and especially) for high-achieving business owners.
  • Growing up in a family that believed if you have good advice, it’s your duty to share it.
  • Reflections on legacy, gratitude, and being able to say she has no regrets about her relationship with her father.
  • Susan’s book flight of impactful reads that have shaped her leadership, creativity, and perspective.

This episode is a thoughtful conversation about leadership, courage, creativity, and the enduring influence of the people who shape us most.

Books That Have Impacted You - Story Share | Part B27 Feb 202400:38:57

Send us a text

In today’s episode I am chatting with Jacqui Lents of the Jacqui Just Chatters podcast. Jacqui and I have teamed up to do a two-part story share. You can find Part A over at Jacqui Just Chatters. We asked for submissions on “Books That Have Impacted You.” We got many lovely submissions and I am beyond excited to share the stories of books that have impacted Sue Pritchard and Shirley Hay.

Sue Pritchard

Although Sue has over 30 years’ experience as a trade journalist, she’s never had the confidence to fulfill her childhood dream of becoming an author. Sue believed she lacked the creativity to come up with a book-worthy idea, until a psychic told her that her dad, who died in 2009, would guide her towards fulfilling that dream. And he has!

Sue is now working towards publication of her first book that takes an honest, amusing, and open-minded look at life. It shows how, as ordinary people, we all have extraordinary stories to share. Sue has completed marathons; survived cycling mishaps; fought a lifelong battle with self-belief; marvelled at the juggle and struggle of being a woman; unearthed unusual family history; built the foundations of her life upon the books she’s read; and realized that the love of a parent knows no bounds. Sue lived in Kent in the southeast of England for most of her life. She is married with two daughters and Sophie the Labrador.

Connect with Sue on:

Shirley Hay

Shirley Hay is an emerging author from the flatlands of the Canadian prairies. Her writing is informed by a background in psychology and family support, including neurodiverse children and those with mental health concerns. She writes stories about survival and strength and love; always aiming to honour women, children and families of all kinds, and at all stages. She has been previously published in "Suddenly and Without Warning" and "Creation Magazine", and will soon have her micro-fiction appear in "50 Give or Take" from Vine Leaves Press. Shirley is currently seeking a publication home for her debut novel, Fault Lines.

Southern Fiction with Author Paul Attaway (E57)20 Dec 202300:47:08

Send us a text

In today’s episode, I am chatting with Paul Attaway. Paul was born and raised in the Atlanta, Georgia area. Paul attended Georgetown University and graduated from the University of Georgia School of Law. He and his wife then moved to Phoenix, AZ, where Paul embarked on a thirty-year business career before retiring to pursue writing fiction. Paul and his wife relocated to Charleston, SC, after raising three children in Phoenix. Blood in the Low Country is Paul Attaway’s debut novel. Writing this book, along with the move to Charleston, is a coming home of sorts, a return to the South. The history and culture of America’s South is rich, complicated, at times comical, sad, tragic, uplifting, and inspiring.

Send us a text

In today’s episode, I am chatting with Sarah Marie Page. Sarah writes light and fluffy YA fantasy. She lives in sunny Phoenix, Arizona with her equally fluffy cat with her husband, who is not fluffy.

She is currently querying HOUSE OF SMOKE and writing SERPENT GREEN, VENOM BLUE. She also has a witchy manuscript that lives in a trunk under the bed.

Her work has been featured in Y Magazine, The Advocate, The Crow’s Quill, and Hippocampus Magazine. While at university, she won first place in the George H. Brimhall Homecoming Essay Contest, which was entered by over 300 applicants.  When she is not writing, she is rock climbing, spoiling the cat, or doing attorney things, which is my day job.

Behind Every Crime is a Family Book Flight with Author Carl Vonderau (E55)06 Dec 202300:51:35

Send us a text

In today’s episode, I am chatting with Carl Vonderau. Carl is an award-winning author of crime fiction. As a child growing up in Cleveland, he loved to write. His ghost stories scared the bejesus out of other kids. But it took a long time to become a full-time author. He left Cleveland to study at Stanford, then spent more than thirty years as a banker in the U.S., Latin America, and North Africa. Those international settings were sources of inspiration for his books. His first novel, “Murderabilia,” was published in 2019 and won a Left Coast Crime award for Best Debut, and a San Diego Book award for Best Mystery. His second novel, “Saving Myles,” was published in August 2023.

Working with nonprofits is also important to Carl. He is the president of Partners in Crime, the San Diego chapter of Sisters in Crime, an organization that supports authors and fans of crime writing. He also volunteers with San Diego Social Venture Partners to mentor other nonprofits. Carl lives with his wife in San Diego. His two grown sons live close by and wonder how he knows so much about serial killers and banking crimes.
