Special Message and Archive Special - Darren Mays, NYPD Beekeeper (359)10 Nov 202500:47:30

Jeff and Becky have a special message for Beekeeping Today Podcast listeners! After decades of managing their own bees and many lessons learned on their beekeeping journeys, they're thrilled to announce that Beekeeping Today is taking the next step — into print. Their forthcoming book, "Beekeeping Today: Your First Year of Beekeeping," brings together personal experiences, insightful lessons, and advice shared on the show, on how to get started with bees and through the first year. And now they'd love your help!

Listeners are invited to submit beekeeping photos for possible inclusion in the book — from bees at work to your hives through the seasons. To learn more or share your images, visit https://www.beekeepingtodaypodcast.com/p/beekeeping-today-the-book/.

After the announcement, Jeff and Becky revisit a listener favorite from the archives — a conversation with NYPD's own beekeeper, Officer Darren Mays. Darren shares what it's like to respond to swarm calls across New York City, rescue bees from surprising places, and balance life as both a police officer and beekeeper.

It's a great reminder that honey bees — and beekeepers — can be found in the most unexpected places.

Fall Management Tips with Jim Tew (354)06 Oct 202500:49:51

Fall is one of the most critical times in the beekeeping calendar, and in this episode Jeff and Becky welcome Jim Tew of Honey Bee Obscura for a lively and practical discussion about preparing colonies for winter.

The conversation starts with a listener's question about quilt boxes—what to put in them, how they work, and whether wood shavings, insulation, or even moisture boards are best. Jim, Jeff, and Becky share their own experiences and lessons learned about managing moisture and heat in the hive, with some humorous nods to past beekeeping misadventures.

From there, the group dives into fall priorities: ensuring colonies have adequate food reserves, considering when and how to feed syrup or fondant, and combining weak colonies before winter. Becky shares her "Frankenstein hive" approach, Jim reflects on decades of overwintering practices, and Jeff offers perspective from the damp Pacific Northwest. The trio also debate ventilation, moisture management, and whether or not to requeen this late in the season.

As always, the discussion mixes science, experience, and a touch of humor—reminding beekeepers that fall is the last big chance to set colonies up for survival. The episode wraps with a look ahead to January's North American Honey Bee Expo in Louisville, where Jim, Jeff, and Becky will be together at the Beekeeping Today Podcast booth.

This is a timely, information-packed conversation for anyone wondering what to do in the final weeks before winter truly sets in.

Apiary Inspectors of America with Brooke & Natasha (286)08 Jul 202400:45:21

In this episode, hosts Jeff and Becky chat with Brooke Decker and Natasha Garcia-Anderson from the Apiary Inspectors of America (AIA). Brooke and Natasha share their extensive knowledge and experiences as regulatory officials dedicated to supporting beekeepers and maintaining bee health across North America.

Brooke, the Pollinator Health Specialist from Vermont, and Natasha, the Apiary Inspector for Washington, D.C., discuss their unique backgrounds and how they became involved in beekeeping and regulatory work. Their roles encompass a wide range of responsibilities, from writing regulations and inspecting hives to educating and supporting local beekeepers. They highlight the crucial role of apiary inspectors in monitoring bee health and preventing the spread of diseases and pests, such as Varroa mites and the potentially devastating Tropilaelaps.

Listeners will learn about the structure and mission of the AIA, a nonprofit organization made up of regulatory officials from various states, provinces, and territories in the U.S. and Canada. The AIA serves as a support network for these officials, facilitating collaboration and information sharing to address common challenges in beekeeping. Brooke and Natasha emphasize the importance of their annual meetings, which provide a platform for inspectors to exchange knowledge, develop strategies, and foster camaraderie.

The episode delves into the challenges faced by apiary inspectors, including funding limitations and the ever-present threat of emerging pests and diseases. Natasha and Brooke discuss their efforts to stay ahead of these threats through training programs, sentinel hives, and regional collaboration. They also touch on the need for more states to establish apiary inspector programs, particularly in regions with significant beekeeping activities but no dedicated regulatory support.

Natasha and Brooke share insights into the benefits of having an apiary inspector, such as improved communication during emergencies, better pest and disease management, and enhanced support for beekeepers. They encourage beekeepers to view inspectors as allies and resources, rather than as regulatory burdens, and to take advantage of the valuable expertise inspectors offer.

Join us for this informative episode to gain a deeper understanding of the vital work done by the Apiary Inspectors of America and how their efforts contribute to the overall health and sustainability of the beekeeping industry.

All New AFB Vaccine with Dalan Animal Health (S6, E51)03 Jun 202400:53:24

In this episode, Jeff and Becky delve into the groundbreaking development of the first American Foulbrood (AFB) vaccine for honeybees with Annette Kleiser, co-founder of Dalan Animal Health, and Tim Ferris, a commercial beekeeper based in Pennsylvania and New Zealand.

Annette shares her journey from concept to market, highlighting the challenges faced in creating a vaccine for bees, a vital yet often overlooked livestock. Tim discusses his practical experiences with the vaccine, emphasizing its importance in preventing the devastating effects of AFB.

American Foulbrood has long been a severe threat to beekeeping, capable of destroying entire colonies due to its highly contagious nature. Historically, the only control methods were burning infected hives or using antibiotics. This episode explores the innovative approach of using an oral vaccine, which offers a promising solution to this persistent problem.

Learn about the future implications of this pioneering vaccine and its role in enhancing bee health and sustainability.

[Bonus] Short: Varroa Treatments - Non-Chemical Means01 Oct 202500:22:00

In this Beekeeping Today Podcast Short, Jeff and Becky are joined once again by Dr. David Peck of Betterbee to explore non-chemical strategies for managing varroa mites. While miticides remain the backbone of many treatment programs, non-chemical approaches can play a valuable role in integrated pest management—if used wisely.

David highlights proven practices like drone brood removal, which exploits the mite's preference for drone cells, and brood interruption techniques, including splits, swarming, and strategic queen caging. The discussion also covers screened bottom boards, powdered sugar dusting, CO₂ exposure, and heat treatments—with an emphasis on what works, what doesn't, and why.

Listeners will learn how combining these non-chemical strategies with timed miticide applications can improve overall mite control while reducing chemical dependence. As David stresses, success comes down to careful timing, strong recordkeeping, and understanding the biology of both honey bees and varroa mites.

This episode reminds beekeepers that there's no silver bullet—only thoughtful management, tailored to season and colony conditions.

Jim Fischer - Bee Quick and Rooftop Beekeeping (353)29 Sep 202500:44:31

In this episode of Beekeeping Today Podcast, Jeff and Becky sit down with East Coast beekeeper and innovator Jim Fischer, the creator of Fischer's Bee-Quick. Known for its pleasant almond-cherry aroma, Bee-Quick was developed as a safer alternative to harsh chemical repellents for removing honey from supers. Jim shares how his father challenged him to "solve the problem" of the dreaded butyric acid, leading him to experiment with aromatics until he distilled a solution that worked for both bees and beekeepers.

Beyond Bee-Quick, Jim's story weaves through decades of beekeeping experience: starting with two retirement gift hives in Virginia, scaling up to pollination along the Blue Ridge Parkway, and later pioneering rooftop beekeeping in Manhattan. He talks candidly about fall splits, queen management, and his practical philosophy that favors simple approaches over complex "desperation moves." Jim also describes working with biodynamic certification, his memories of Richard Taylor and Ross Rounds, and the realities of keeping bees in an urban setting.

Whether you're curious about the origins of Bee-Quick, strategies for overwintering nucs, or the logistics of rooftop hives overlooking Central Park, this wide-ranging conversation offers insights, humor, and practical advice from a beekeeper who has seen—and done—a little bit of everything.

Almond Pollination and Bee Hero with CEO, Omer Davidi (S6, E32)22 Jan 202400:47:26

In this episode, we delve into a pivotal event in the North American beekeeping calendar: the annual migration of over two million honey bee colonies to California's almond orchards. This massive movement, spanning mid-February to mid-March, marks the beginning of the beekeeping year.

Coordinating this migration demands meticulous planning and collaboration between beekeepers and almond growers. It's a race against time, with the almond bloom not waiting for any delays. Beekeepers face the challenge of ensuring their colonies are both robust and healthy for this critical period.

Our special guest today is Omer Davidi, CEO and co-founder of BeeHero. This innovative company is revolutionizing beekeeping with in-hive sensors that monitor colony health. These sensors provide vital data, aiding beekeepers in making informed decisions and reducing the need to open hives unnecessarily.

BeeHero also plays a unique role in bridging the gap between beekeepers and growers. They take the helm in representing beekeepers for pollination contracts, using detailed data from their sensors to negotiate with growers. This service is especially beneficial for beekeepers who prefer focusing on beekeeping rather than the marketing and contracting aspects of the business.

Backyard beekeepers, take note! Although you might think these large-scale operations don't impact you, they actually play a crucial role. The success of these almond orchard bees lays the foundation for the country's package and nuc business, influencing beekeepers nationwide.

Join Jeff and Becky as they explore BeeHero's business model and its potential benefits for beekeepers involved in pollination. Tune in to gain valuable insights into this fascinating aspect of beekeeping!

Charlie Linder: From Backyard to Commercial Beekeeper (S6, E31)15 Jan 202400:44:42

Every hobbyist beekeeper eventually contemplates scaling up to a commercial operation with thousands of hives. Our podcast guest, Charlie Linder, embraced this challenge and has been forging ahead ever since.

Initially, Charlie's beekeeping business centered on honey production. However, facing declining wholesale honey prices and competition from imported honey, he pivoted to pollination services. Now managing over 5,000 colonies, Charlie still feels like a novice compared to beekeepers with over 10,000 hives.

Currently, Charlie is preparing his colonies ready to go into almond pollination mid-February. The almond orchards lure in over 2-million colonies from all over the USA in what is considered the largest single bee migration in the world (of course… via four colonies to a pallet on a semi).  The pallets of bees get dropped off in the dark, settled in place in the low glow of head and taillights, smoke and cloud of confused and disoriented bees.

In six weeks, this process is reversed. The bees are transported again, undergoing grading, splitting, and preparation for other crop pollinations, as well as for package and nuc sales.

Apart from running his bee operation, Charlie serves on the American Beekeeping Federation's board of directors. Contrary to popular belief, the ABF's efforts extend beyond commercial beekeeping. The Federation vigilantly addresses national issues to ensure honey bees and their keepers aren't adversely affected by ill-informed legislative actions. Today, Charlie talks specifically about the proposed transfer of miticide regulation from the EPA to the FDA, a move that could delay critical varroa mite treatments.

Listen to today's episode as Jeff and Becky talk with Charlie Linder, a backyard turned commercial beekeeper!

Honey bees are an emerging specialty for Veterinarians. Meghan and Eva have used the antibiotic access restrictions imposed by the 2017 Veterinary Feed Directive to support the honey bee industry. Eva has set up a honey bee practice to support beekeepers. In addition to providing access to needed antibiotics, she describes how veterinarians can help beekeepers diagnose disease and monitor pests.

Listeners will learn about advanced disease diagnosis and the tools that other livestock industries use to detect pathogens. Eva describes the need and opportunity for more research and governmental support for the honey bee industry from the perspective of a veterinary health care practitioner. Also, this episode addresses how biosecurity is different in honey bee management as compared to other livestock animals.

Join this conversation to learn why honey bees need as many professionals as possible to help take care of them. This episode explores how veterinarians' contribution to honey bee health is growing and where the potential opportunities for improving honey bee care exist. Veterinary care for honey bees is not just limited to access to antimicrobials!

In this episode of Beekeeping Today Podcast, Jeff Ott and Becky Masterman welcome Delaney Dameron, CEO of Best Bees, to explore the growing field of corporate beekeeping. Delaney shares how Best Bees manages nearly 2,000 hives across 24 cities, installing colonies on rooftops and properties for businesses, universities, and homeowners committed to sustainability and pollinator health.

Delaney explains how Best Bees uses its proprietary data system, Bzzz, to collect and analyze the world's largest standardized beekeeping dataset. This information drives research partnerships with universities and nonprofits, providing insights into colony health, forage diversity, and the impact of urban and corporate environments on pollinators.

The conversation highlights how Best Bees engages corporate clients beyond hive management—offering employee programming, pollinator education, honey DNA analysis, and landscape planning to make cities "greener." Delaney also discusses hiring and training beekeepers nationwide, managing seasonal logistics, and running pilot programs for mason bees.

Whether you are a sideliner looking for professional beekeeping opportunities or curious how corporations are supporting pollinator health, this episode shows how data-driven hive management can scale sustainability and strengthen community connections.

New Year's Archive Special: Two Queen Honey Production (S6, E29)01 Jan 202400:42:44

Happy New Year! As we embark on a new year, often marked by resolutions, we're excited to present a New Year's Archive Special. Join Jeff and Becky as they revisit Jeff's and Kim's insightful interview with Colorado beekeeper Tom Theobald, in 2021. While Tom might not be the inventor of the two-queen colony management system for increasing honey yields, his refinements to the technique are remarkable. If boosting honey production is on your 2024 agenda, this episode is for you!

Tom ran a modest commercial beekeeping operation in Colorado during the late 1970s, managing around 200 colonies. He began experimenting with two-queen colonies early on. The underlying biology of this method is fascinating and effective, as Tom demonstrates, but it does entail more physical labor. His most productive hives consisted of three deeps for brood and seven mediums for honey storage. While an average strong colony in his region typically produced about 70 pounds of honey per season, Tom's two-queen colonies impressively averaged between 240 and 270 pounds!

The method's benefits extend beyond substantial honey yields. These colonies begin the season with the previous year's queen and introduce a new queen in early spring. At season's end, the newer queen usually takes precedence, ensuring a proven queen for the following year. Additionally, the enlarged foraging population of these colonies amasses an extensive pollen reserve, vital for the next season's buildup.

Despite its advantages, two-queen honey production is becoming a rarity, largely due to the labor intensity, precise timing, and deep understanding of local nectar flows required. However, the rewards can be significant, particularly in areas with abundant forage and minimal varroa mite or pesticide issues.

Have you experimented with two-queen colonies? We're eager to hear about your experiences! Share your thoughts in the episode comments.Links and websites mentioned in this podcast:

Exploring the Native and Non-Native Bee Debate with Ron Miksha (S6, E24)27 Nov 202300:55:28

In this episode, we talk with Ron Miksha, a former commercial beekeeper now living in Calgary, Alberta. Ron was on the podcast back in August of this year talking about the Western Apiculture Society conference with Étienne Tardiff. At the time, he mentioned his research on the impact of the non-native honey bee on native bees and floral sources. This topic deserved its own space so we invited him back today.

The debate over the impact of honey bees on native bees, pollinators, and floral sources is a complex and multifaceted issue, touching upon ecology, conservation, and agriculture. At the heart of this debate lies the honey bee, a non-native species in many parts of the world.

One major concern is the competition honey bees may pose to native bee populations. By sheer numbers, honey bees can dominate floral resources in an area, potentially outcompeting native bees for nectar and pollen. This competition can be particularly significant in areas with limited floral abundance. Some studies suggest that the presence of honey bees in resource-constrained areas can lead to a decrease in the diversity and abundance of native bees.

Honey bees are renowned for their pollination services, crucial for many agricultural crops. However, their dominance in certain ecosystems may alter pollination dynamics. While they contribute significantly to the pollination of a wide range of crops, their presence may affect the pollination efficiency of native plants, which have evolved alongside native pollinators.

Honey bees not only compete with native bees for existing resources but can also influence the abundance and distribution of floral resources themselves. Their foraging patterns can affect the flowering plants' reproductive success, potentially leading to changes in plant community composition over time.

The debate extends to conservation and beekeeping practices. There is a growing call for responsible beekeeping that minimizes the impact on native bee populations and ecosystems. This includes managing hive numbers, especially in ecologically sensitive areas, and supporting habitat restoration and conservation efforts to bolster both native and non-native pollinator populations.

The challenge lies in balancing the agricultural benefits of honey bees with the ecological needs of native pollinators and plants. This involves a nuanced understanding of local ecosystems, the role of different pollinators, and the impact of human activities.

The debate over the impact of honey bees on native bees and ecosystems is an ongoing one, requiring continued research, informed policy-making, and collaborative conservation efforts. Thoughtful consideration and continued research are needed. Listen to our conversation with Ron as he shares his research and observations on this topic.

European Foulbrood with Dr. Meghan Milbrath (S6, E22)13 Nov 202300:54:56

On today's episode, Jeff and Becky talk with Dr. Meghan Milbrath, assistant professor at Michigan State University. Meghan splits her time between teaching at the MSU veterinary school, extension and research. On today's episode, Meghan discusses the impact European foulbrood on today's honey bees and what beekeepers can do to fight its spread.

EFB is misunderstood and not heavily researched, but as we've been learning (listen to our episode with Dr. Andony Melanthopoulos for additional information on EFB) it's negative impact to honey bees - especially (for unknown reasons) those going into blueberries - are costly.

European Foulbrood, caused by the bacterium Melissococcus plutonius, presents a significant challenge in beekeeping. This brood disease, primarily affecting young larvae, can have considerable economic impact due to its potential to weaken or even destroy bee colonies if left unmanaged. In the U.S., where beekeeping plays a crucial role in agriculture, both for honey production and for pollinating crops, the repercussions of EFB are notably economic.

The impact of EFB is multifaceted. Firstly, it reduces the population of healthy bees in a colony, leading to lower honey production. For beekeepers, especially in their initial years, this translates to direct revenue loss. Additionally, weakened colonies are less effective pollinators, affecting crop yields. This has broader implications for agriculture, as many crops depend on bees for pollination.

The cost of managing EFB also contributes to its economic impact. This includes the expenses related to veterinary care, antibiotics (where allowed and appropriate), and sometimes the replacement of affected colonies. There's also an indirect cost in the time and labor invested in monitoring and managing bee health to prevent outbreaks.

While EFB doesn't always lead to colony loss, its presence can significantly set back a beekeeping operation, both financially and in terms of colony development. Understanding and managing this disease is crucial for maintaining healthy bee populations and ensuring the economic viability of beekeeping in the United States. Research and science-based practices continue to be key in mitigating the impacts of EFB and supporting the beekeeping industry.

Listen today, as Dr. Meghan Milbrath discusses EFB and what beekeepers can do to limit the impact of this disease, what treatments are being developed, and what you can do should your colonies become infected.

American Honey Producers Assn with Chris Hiatt (S6, E20)30 Oct 202300:45:51

In today's episode, Jeff and Becky chat with Chris Hiatt, the President of the American Honey Producers Association (AHPA). AHPA, with a history dating back to its establishment in 1969, has been a cornerstone of the beekeeping community. Their mission has always revolved around advocating for beekeepers and the honey industry, and they've consistently upheld this commitment.

The AHPA has played a pivotal role in advancing the beekeeping industry, with a primary focus on the needs and concerns of all beekeepers, from the hobbyist, to the commercial and sideline beekeeper. They work tirelessly with organizations promoting bee health, research and awareness, such as the Honey Bee Health Coalition, Bee Informed Partnership, Project Apis m., and Pollinator Partnership. (All of whom have been guests on this podcast!)

AHPA is also deeply involved in honey promotion and marketing. They understand that creating a strong demand for honey and honey-related products is essential to support the livelihoods of beekeepers. Through collaborations with industry partners (such as the National Honey Board) and various initiatives, they work diligently to ensure that the efforts of beekeepers are rewarded fairly.

Additionally, AHPA is actively engaged in honey standards and advocacy, working to ensure that the quality of honey products is maintained, and that beekeepers' interests are well-represented on regulatory fronts.

Listen as we sit down with Chris Hiatt to gain insights into the important work being done by the American Honey Producers Association. His wealth of experience and expertise as President of the organization provides valuable perspectives on the current state and future of beekeeping. Don't miss this informative and enlightening episode!

Shaping the Future of Beekeeping with Kamon Reynolds (351)15 Sep 202500:55:54

In this episode, Jeff Ott and Becky Masterman welcome back Kamon Reynolds, Tennessee beekeeper and founder of the North American Honeybee Expo (NAHBE). Kamon shares how he balances managing over 150 colonies with organizing one of the largest beekeeping events in North America.

Kamon discusses the logistics of moving bees to Wisconsin for basswood honey flows, keeping mite loads low through early-season oxalic acid slow release treatments, and maintaining young queens to build resilient colonies. He reflects on the challenges of dearth periods in the South, creative solutions like late splits and comb drawing, and the lessons learned from experimenting with migratory beekeeping.

The conversation shifts to NAHBE's growth and its role in shaping the future of the industry—highlighting innovation, connecting vendors with beekeepers, and inspiring a new generation of apiarists through outreach to FFA (Future Farmers of America). The next expo takes place January 8–10, 2026 in Louisville, Kentucky, with expanded workshops and more vendor engagement opportunities.

If you've ever considered attending NAHBE or want insight into sideline beekeeping, queen management, or the state of the industry, this episode is packed with practical advice and inspiration for beekeepers at every level.

Bee Conspiracy with Author David Boito (S6, E19)23 Oct 202300:34:45

In pop culture, beekeepers are generally portrayed as quirky side characters. There are exceptions, of course. The movie Ullee's Gold with Peter Fonda, comes to mind, as does The Secret Life of Bees, first as a novel and later a movie. Now, there is a new book where both bees and an entomologist are the subject, victim, and heros! Today, author and screenwriter, David Boito, join Jeff and Becky to talk about his newly released book, Bee Conspiracy.

David talks about why he chose the characters he did and why he set bees as both the focus of the heros and the villan of his novel. Part cop-buddy, murder mystery, futuristic and agro-terrorism, Bee Conspiracy, is a fun winter read for anyone interested in insects and especially honey bees.

Interesting and entertaining, today's episode is one you will want to listen to!

Honey Labeling and Native vs. Non-Native with Eugene Makovec (S6, E18)16 Oct 202300:53:28

On today's show, Jeff and Becky welcome back Eugene Makovec, editor of the American Bee Journal!

Honey labeling laws vary widely across the US, creating a complex patchwork of regulations that can be challenging for both new and experienced beekeepers. While these laws are intended to protect consumers and promote transparency, they can be a source of confusion within the beekeeping community. As we will hear, these differences can be particularly vexing for beekeepers who sell their products across state lines, as they must navigate varying requirements.

Eugene shares his experience working with his state and those of neighboring states to standardize labeling requirements. Later in the episode, Eugene shares insight into the current debate between conservationists and beekeepers: native vs. non-native.

Honey bees were once the 'canary in the coal mine' of our natural environment. Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) had beekeepers and media promoting, "Save The Honey Bee". Now conservation groups have adopted a more critical and perhaps adversarial stance toward honey bees, citing honey bees' potential harm to native pollinators. True or false, in whole or in part, this controversy is a topic with which all beekeepers should familiarize themselves and know how to respond to neighbor and community questions.

Interesting, educational and thought provoking, today's episode is one you will want to listen to!

Rooftop Beekeeping with the Bee Buddies in Chicago (S6, E17)09 Oct 202300:39:33

On today's episode, guest cohost Becky Masterman, PhD, joins Jeff to talk with Al Renslow, who lives at a Chicago senior living community, The Admiral at the Lake. Al, a retired schoolteacher turned beekeeper, has assembled a corp of like-minded 'bee-lievers', who refer to themselves as The Admiral Bee Buddies.

Al developed this hobby as a passion project, a way to learn new skills and contribute to the environment. As a bonus, he now has an outlet that benefits his mental well-being!

Al launched The Admiral's beekeeping program in 2019 based on his belief that we must be good stewards of the environment. With the support of The Admiral community, he began dedicating time to the start-up. Through his own research, he taught himself how to manage his bees and, in the process, discovered how unique the colony's urban honey is. City bees create exquisite-tasting honey due to the diverse native plants, and this unique honey can only be found within The Admiral's campus.

The Admiral Bee Buddies have expanded over the years and now there are eight residents helping maintain the bees. Last season, over 400 bottles of urban honey were harvested, bottled, labeled and distributed with the help of Admiral community members who reside in the memory care unit, who volunteered to package the Bee Buddies' prized possession.

The Bee Buddies rooftop program is a boost to everyone at The Admiral, whether they are helping manage the bees or just share in the sweet rewards.

We hope you enjoy listening to their story. Thank you!
