[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 102: A*Mazing10 Sep 202500:05:00

This one's a treat for all the Aussies out there! A*Mazing was Australia's most beloved kids' game show in the 90s, featuring a tiny bit of competitive video game play between very easy trivia and searches for hidden objects in an obstacle course. And the entire thing was presided over by one of the most critical childrens' show hosts we've seen in our time doing this show.

We cover two episodes of the show: this one from 1994 and this one from 1995.

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 100: The Running Man08 Jul 202500:05:00

A perfect encapsulation of 80's movie jank. It's dumb, it's sexist, but boy are the boss fights cool. And it inspired SmashTV! What more could you ask for? Join Ahnold as he battles the gauntlet and attempts escape from a sadistic TV show with life-or-death stakes.

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 87: Arcade12 Jun 202400:05:00

Well, Cuphead and his (adopted brother) Mugman,
They like to roll the skee balls
By chance they came 'pon the Devil's Game,
And gosh, they paid the.... what rhymes with skee balls?

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 67: The Sims Spark'd12 Oct 202200:05:00

The Sims is obviously an amazing game series and we wish we could play more of it. From the outside, the Sims community seems like an inclusive and welcoming space where people can be creative and have fun.

And then we have the Sims Spark'd, the product of an ill-advised partnership between EA, TBS, and Buzzfeed Multiplayer.

They gather 12 Sims content creators, put them in teams of three, and subject them to baffling challenges, for which they are judged arbitrarily by some people who just happened to be around the studio. You feel for the contestants trying to meet unspoken demands under increasingly brutal time constraints. But that's what happens when you try to make an expressive game into a competition.

You can watch the whole series here, but we only discuss the first episode.

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 64: Deus Ex: Human Revolution, The Comic25 Jul 202200:05:00

Did you know that DC published a comic to promote the release of Deus Ex: Human Revolution? Of course you didn't! The six issue arc follows Adam Jensen on a little side mission that takes place in between chapters of the game. A new augmented terrorist is on the scene, and the series of attacks has something to do with his past on the Detroit SWAT team. So he enlists the help of basically Lara Croft? It's weird, kinda bad, and tonally all over the place. So, perfect for this show.

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 63: Frogger: The Game Show08 Jun 202200:05:00

You've never heard of this game show, and because it's on Peacock you'll probably never see it. But it's worth talking about because, wow, it's a very bad idea. Imagine sacrificing your bodily integrity to suffer concussions and broken bones on a more boring version of American Ninja Warrior, where every move is "gently jump to another surface and crawl on top of it". And imagine doing so while two hosts with the worst chemistry imaginable take potshots at you. It's a wild experience.

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 62: Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City11 May 202200:05:00

This newest Resident Evil movie is simultaneously a better adaptation and a better movie than the Paul W.S. Anderson movies, while also not being good enough. It crams the broad story of the first two Resident Evil games into a breathless mess that's goofy and entertaining, while wasting tons of opportunities to tell the best stories from the source material. But hey, at least it adapts the games.

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 60: Muppet Babies: It's Only Pretendo14 Mar 202200:05:00

The Muppet Babies was a smash hit cartoon that started the "baby versions of popular characters" craze, but video game fans remember one episode in particular. Gonzo loves his Pretendo, and the entire nursery goes NUTS when they start playing it along with him. This episode is an excuse for us to get nostalgic for the Muppets while also doing a shorter episode, so we hope you enjoy going on this ride with us.

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 59: Double Dragon (Animated Series)09 Feb 202200:05:00

Billy and Jimmy are brothers. One's a Dragon Master, one's a Shadow Master, until they're both Dragon Masters because a Shadow Master comes to town. It's dumb. The whole show, honestly, is garbage. It's hard to look at, hard to listen to, and it's a really bad adaptation. Avoid at all costs.

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 95: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (EXPERT LEVEL PODCAST)12 Feb 202500:05:00

Can you feel life moving through your mind? Looks like it came back for more. Can you feel time slipping down your spine? You try and try to ignore.

Gary's note: We need to know you can hang before you listen to this. Can you hang? Are you going to be cool?

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 57: A Pac and Poke Christmas23 Dec 202100:05:00

This month we take a look at two Christmas specials: one from the Pac-Man cartoon, and one from the Pokemon anime. The Pac-Man cartoon remains as baffling and boring as always, relying on the same non-joke about "chomping" for its entire duration. Meanwhile, the Pokemon Christmas special, "Stantler's Little Helpers" is very cute, but slight.

Somehow, both specials have the same plot: Santa injures his reindeer, and it's up to the heroes to drug them so they can get back in the air.

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 56: GamePro TV13 Nov 202100:05:00

What if the 90s were made into a pure, uncut video drug? You'd get GamePro TV. Hosted by J.D. Roth and the contemptible B-Man, this half-hour commercial claimed to be the television version of GamePro Magazine. Listen as we talk about this fever dream of green-screen effects and poorly stretched commentary.

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 55: Silent Hill: Revelation17 Oct 202100:05:00

There are some nice things to be said about the original Silent Hill movie. It has pacing and script problems, but its production design is both high quality AND faithful to the games. When it came time to make a followup, they whiffed every single aspect of it. Sharon from the first movie is all grown up, and Silent Hill wants her back. At least we think it does, it's very self-contradictory.

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 54: Kirby: Right Back at Ya!08 Sep 202100:05:00

We're as surprised as you are that this turned out to be okay. But it's kinda fun! We know that Kirby's cute, but he'd also be a nightmare to live around. This 2003 cartoon presents the reality of having a Town Kirby... a pre-verbal infant cosmic monstrosity who can destroy homes on a whim. Though we disgree with his methods, we have to say it's hard to fault King Dedede for wanting him gone.

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 53: Resident Evil Comics11 Aug 202100:05:00

This month we talk about five issues of really bad comic adaptations of Resident Evil, which should actually be really easy to adapt! It's nonsense, really, how WildStorm managed to biff this one so hard. What starts as half-assed, rushed retellings of the first two games expands into some slightly better, but still worthless expansions and side stories. How does Barry Burton's therapy go? What if there were zombies in the Eiffel Tower? What if there were some bats in a desert?

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 52: Saturday Supercade14 Jul 202100:05:00

We head back to the earliest days of video game cartoons to talk about a confusing and boring variety show that's not really based on your arcade favorites! The good news is, YouTube also featured the vintage commercials. Saturday Supercade was an hour long show, and each episode featured four segments... this month, we talk about an episode that features Frogger, Donkey Kong, QBert, and Donkey Kong Jr. And it couldn't be clearer that they took unrelated scripts and did a find/replace to add in video game stuff.

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 51: Mortal Kombat (2021)18 Jun 202100:05:00

The staying power of the Mortal Kombat brand is a mystery, but we're here for it... even if this movie is dumb as rocks. Cole is a down and out MMA fall guy who happens to be the heir to a great line of ninja warriors. There's also an interdimensional martial arts tournament that Sonya Blade and Jax are investigating. And Kano is here, too. Can the heroes of Earthrealm save the world, again, for the first time?

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 50: Willy's Wonderland14 May 202100:05:00

The creators of Willy's Wonderland might claim they weren't inspired by Five Nights at Freddy's, but we'll trust our eyes over them. Nicolas Cage plays a mute, mechanical janitor stranded in a small town, and trapped in a haunted fun center overnight. There are also horny teens in play. This is a baffling, cheap, fun movie and we have a great time talking about it.

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 49: Beta Test09 Apr 202100:05:00

You have never heard of this movie, and we're going to fix that. Beta Test supposes a world where a gamer can control a living person, who sends back convincing enough footage to make that gamer unaware that they're doing more than playing a game. So the most famous beta tester who ever lives is tricked into controlling a fighty fight guy through a horrible killing spree in order to... and I'm not kidding here... justify gun control laws. It's baffling and distasteful!

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 48: Legends of the Hidden Temple10 Mar 202100:05:00

Did you know they made a TV movie out of Legends of the Hidden Temple? And that it's actually kind of okay? This month's Adaptation Decay is a slight deviation from our usual formula, as we talk about the Nickelodeon game show classic, and then examine its faithful film adaptation.

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 94: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time08 Jan 202500:05:00

The film that nobody asked for, and yet all we have left are questions. One thing the film certainly doesn't leave misunderstood: that sand? That's time sand. Not that the* prince uses it much.

*There is more than once prince.

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 47: Sonic Cartoons09 Feb 202100:05:00

This month we bring you a discussion of two cartoons based on Sonic the Hedgehog, both released in 1993.

First, we talk about "The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog", which aired in syndication on weekdays. Specifically, we talk about the episode "Super Special Sonic Search and Smash Squad", which gives the origin story for two of the show's annoying villains.

Next, we talk about "Sonic the Hedgehog", or Sonic SatAm, which aired on ABC during their Saturday morning programming block. This is the darker, more serious, more boring one. Sonic works alongside the freedom fighters of Knothole village to thwart the grim plots of Dr. Robotnik. Did we mention that it's boring?

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 46: Rampage16 Jan 202100:05:00

You can't help but smile at big dumb fun. The Rock is one of those muscle scientists, raising the last of the albino gorillas. Unfortunately, a wayward canister of corrupt corporate super contagion makes its way into his zoo, and all of a sudden Chicago is at risk. We really like this movie, because the monters are big and the buildings fall down.

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 45: Dragon Age: Redemption15 Dec 202000:05:00

This month, to coincide with the WOFF! coverage of Dragon Age 2, we're turning our attention to the web series created by Felicia Day to promote the "Mark of the Assassin" DLC. The short version is that we're unimpressed. The long version is that this is a really fun episode if you like to hear us dig in on a failed movie.

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 44: Dragon's Lair21 Nov 202000:05:00

The arcade hit Dragon's Lair was already more cartoon than game, so you'd think it wouldn't be hard to push it all the way to one side and make an animated series out of it. The problem is, you also have to have plots, and dialogue, and all kinds of hard things. This show ended up being one of the more boring things we've covered for Adaptation Decay, and that's saying something.

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 43: Stay Alive14 Oct 202000:05:00

If you die in the game, etc. etc. and so on.

A wise man once warned me: If you die in the game, you die in real life. That man was someone speaking in a trailer for this movie, and that's why I've never died in a game. "Stay Alive" is a movie that not a lot of people remember, because it's very bad. Some young people discover an unreleased survival horror-ish game. The problem is, anyone who dies in the game is killed in a similar way by supernatural forces. So the friends must work together to learn where to game came from, and figure out how to lift its curse.

Suffering from a lot of the problems you'd expect to find in a low budget PG-13 slasher film, Stay Alive does have some fun surprises and over the top performances. But it's a lot more fun to talk about than watch.

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 42: Plants vs. Zombies Comic / Pac-Man Cartoon11 Sep 202000:05:00

This month is a rare split episode, because our initial plan would have resulted in an episode that was too short!

First, we cover the 2013 comic book adaptation of Plants vs. Zombies. It's a cute kids' comic about two plucky youngsters to team up with Crazy Dave and his mutant plants to stop the zombies from taking over Neighborville. Is it profound? Not really. But it's a great way to read some cute jokes and see charming drawings of those already charming plants.

The back half of the episode takes a surreal turn as we talk about the 1982 Pac-Man cartoon. Animated by Hanna-Barbera, this is the first cartoon based on a video game, and boy do they make some serious leaps as to what kind of world Pac-Man lives in, and what kinds of adventures he gets up to. It's a sight to behold.

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 41: Wreck-It Ralph12 Aug 202000:05:00

This month we watch and discuss Wreck-It Ralph, a Disney animated film from 2012. It has a great cast and works in some very fun video game in-jokes before heading into a soggy middle section that kind of drags things down. John C. Riley's performance obviously runs away with the show, but the other big names are no slouches.

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 40: Left 4 Dead: The Sacrifice08 Jul 202000:05:00

This digital comic was created by Valve to coincide with the final Left 4 Dead DLC and show us how the stories of the original four survivors began and ended. Over the course of four issues, Bill, Francis, Louis, and Zoey are captured by the military and escape a horrible fate before deciding what their endgame is. It's a fun comic that integrates well with the game, and highlights how good Valve can be at storytelling when they decide to make things.

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 39: Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm12 Jun 202000:05:00

Why does this exist?

Even though Mortal Kombat is pretty juvenile, it makes zero sense to create a childrens' cartoon based on the property. So this show from 1996 is already on a bad foot. Additionally, it's also extremely bad. The animation and blocking are poor, the dialogue is 90% cheesy one-liners, and too much of the runtime is taken up by dogfighting in dragon jets. Wait, did you not know there were jets?

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 38: Resident Evil: Apocalypse13 May 202000:05:00

Punch Nemesis until he becomes your friend!

We go back to the extremely poison well of the Resident Evil movie continuity to see how Alice and co. treat the Raccoon City incident. This is a very poorly-made semi-adaptation of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, where Alice upstages Jill and punches Nemesis until he becomes her friend. It's extremely bad and dumb, you guys.

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 92: GamesMaster14 Nov 202400:05:00

Behold, a UK Television Magazine featuring contest, commentary, and a man with a large head.

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 37: Doom: Annihilation08 Apr 202000:05:00

This won't go how you think.

Get ready for this to be slightly more positive than you expect. When the trailer for Doom: Annihilation came out, we were shocked at how bad it looked. The full product isn't actually "good", but there's some SyFy Original fun to be had here. It's cheap and it lacks subtlety, and it's a vague re-telling of Doom 3 through the eyes of the chosen religious soldier Joan Dark. Like I said, it isn't subtle.

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 36: Mazes and Monsters13 Mar 202000:05:00

D12s... Not even once.

This very boring movie is a relic of the Satanic Panic of the 1980s, when concerned parents everywhere got very scared of Dungeons and Dragons without actually learning about the game. Tom Hanks takes a leading role in a story about a college student who loses track of the distinction between fantasy and reality, and his impossibly rich and preppy friends try to lie to the police so they can save him themselves.

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay: Sonic the Hedgehog25 Feb 202000:05:00

Gary, Kole and special guest Will (Gary's friend and professional writer), tackle what some are calling the best video game adaptation ever. Are they right? No. But it's still a very fun episode.

[PREVIEW] Adaptation Decay 34: Street Fighter15 Jan 202000:05:00

For us, it's Wednesday, so come get this Street Fighter movie episode.

We decided to begin 2020 with an all-out banger. The 1994 Street Fighter movie starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Raul Julia is a sight to behold. It's one of the most fun movies we've covered for this show, but it's a complete mess. And it was doomed to be a mess from the start.
