In this episode, I sit down with Polly Warren, breathwork and nervous system coach and host of the Menomorphosis podcast. We talk about reframing perimenopause and menopause as opportunities to step into your best self. We also connect the dots between stress, hormones, and purpose—and why this stage of life can unlock creativity and clarity you’ve never experienced before.

Episode Overview

Sometimes people treat your healing work—or even your leadership—as something “cute,” a one-off spa-day vibe, or optional. The truth? Your work is transformational. The shift happens when you raise your standards.

In this episode, I share personal stories (yes, even about coffee and peanut butter!) to show how raising standards changes everything—from your business, to your relationships, to your own sense of ease.

This isn’t about being perfect or bougie (though I own that too). It’s about choosing what actually supports you—so you can lead with freedom, clarity, and joy.

What You’ll Learn
  • The difference between standards (what you set for yourself) and expectations (what you place on others)

  • Why people undervaluing your work is often a reflection of your own standards

  • How nervous system capacity can block or support your ability to raise standards

  • Practical ways to stop offering one-off sessions and create containers for real transformation

  • Why reciprocity and drama-free relationships are part of your energetic upgrade

100. From clutter to calm: How furniture placement can transform your space with Lynn Stanek16 Oct 202301:03:05

Become a founding member of Your Yes Filled Home by clicking here. In this podcast episode, Brenda and Lynn Stanek, a professional real estate stager, discuss creating a sense of ease and flow in homes. Brenda shares her positive experience working with Lynn when selling her townhouse, and Lynn talks about the importance of creating a meaningful and balanced space. They discuss furniture placement, the use of personal items, and the impact on the overall atmosphere of the home. They also share tips for decluttering and letting go of sentimental items.

Here are the takeaways...

  1. Creating a sense of ease and flow in homes makes you feel more at home
  2. Furniture placement and personal items are important to consider in creating a welcoming home environment. Think about pulling large furniture away from the wall.
  3. Try angling furniture or rugs to transform the energy in a space
  4. External surroundings reflect one's internal self
  5. Keep only meaningful items in the space and eliminate clutter
  6. Try folding your towels in half before hanging them so they look really pretty, then place a towel you want people to use on the counter, and it will direct people to the towel you prefer them to use.
  7. Let go of sentimental items by putting them somewhere you can see them and use them, or by taking a photo

98. The Secret to Successful Entrepreneurship with Tracy Beavers 01 Oct 202300:57:35

Join the Boundary Brilliance Masterclass: https://www.brendawinkle.com/boundary-brilliance In this podcast episode, Tracy Beavers, a business and sales coach from Arkansas, joins Brenda as a guest. They discuss the importance of finding joy and spaciousness in business, as well as the initial fears and challenges of becoming an entrepreneur. Tracy shares her personal journey and the lessons she has learned along the way. They also talk about the ongoing nature of building a business and the need to pace oneself. Tracy and Brenda discuss the benefits of delaying a website and using live video in business. They emphasize the importance of engagement and building relationships in the online space. Tracy reflects on the importance of taking care of one's nervous system and finding joy in difficult moments through gratitude.

Here are the takeaways...

  1. You can increase your success in business when you find spaciousness and joy
  2. Our businesses will never be fully built as online entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurship is a roller coaster, and most successful entrepreneurs are willing to slow down their pace and figure things out as they go.
  3. There is often a need for reassurance and validation in entrepreneurship because there isn't a guidebook, since we are all so different. This is where a business coach can be supportive.
  4. You can start your business with almost nothing, delaying the creation of a website and focusing on other aspects of the business by creating a simple landing page.
  5. The most effective thing to do to increase your visilbity from a social media standpoint is to use live video and reels.
  6. Something simple you can add to your content is a call to action. Ask for a response of any kind.
  7. Importance of engagement and building relationships in the online space

97. Lucas Root on Empowering Women and Building Strong Communities24 Sep 202301:20:49

Try breathwork free: https://www.brendawinkle.com/breathe In this podcast episode, Brenda Winkle and Lucas Root discuss their experiences and challenges when leaving their corporate careers. They share personal stories and insights on boundaries, freedom, and pursuing their passions. They also discuss the importance of empowering women, achieving gender parity, and building strong communities. Lucas introduces the concept of the six elements of community: language, purpose, projects, and value. They touch on the financial burden of raising children and the loneliness epidemic. They also explore the use of technology in their creative processes and the importance of understanding and utilizing these tools.

Here are the takeaways...
  1. Leaving corporate careers to pursue fulfilling work feels like freedom
  2. You are selling all the time whether you realize it or not. Consider the ways you "sell" your loved ones on things. In Lucas' example, he mentioned selling your kids on not running in the street. If you have a fear of sales, realizing the ways you are already selling can be supportive.
  3. A study by McKinsey revealed that only 5% of C-Suite executives are women. If this could change, and we achieved gender parity, it would infuse the global economy with $28 (updated) Trillion based on the stats provided by that study linked here.
  4. Elements of community:
    1. Language - Inside stories, the way we shake hands, our words, the ways we dress
    2. Purpose - Security is often the primary purpose of community but our communities can focus on much more granular issues. The more granular, the better.
    3. Projects - A time-bound activity with a deliverable at the end. Examples Lucas provided included meeting friends for coffee on a Saturday morning. It has to be planned and has to be in pursuit of the purpose and have a deliverable.
    4. Value - Shared value: the value you receive and the value you contribute. That could be hugs and friendly faces. It could also considered an energy exchange rather than a direct reciprocity.
    5. Social Contract - the rules we choose to live by while we are in community
    6. Heart (no exact word in English) - the sharing and receiving of care and pride as it pertains to the work you do with and for the community
  5.  It's no secret that raising children comes with a financial burden. Building community to help you raise your children is way to create the village of "it takes a village".
  6. There is a loneliness epidemic. Human connection is critically important. Invitation to consider how you can create a community with the people around you. Can you ask for help? Can you offer help? Lucas said, love your neighbors and you never know what will happen.
  7. Use technology to enhance creative processes. We also talked about the potential risks and benefits of AI. Chat GPT is essentially a calculator predicting outcomes for words. The most important thing to do is to use it, try it or risk being left behind.
  8. You can easily enhance creativity by playing with children and finding ways to have fun.
  9. Ways to access joy and reprogram oneself for a positive mindset

95. Healthy Relationship Habits with Dr. Karin Calde11 Sep 202300:53:50
Try breathwork free: https://www.brendawinkle.com/breathe

In this podcast episode, Brenda and Karin Calde have a conversation about relationships, therapy, coaching, and personal growth. Karin is a former therapist and current relationship coach, specializing in helping women struggling in their romantic relationships. Karin discusses her transition from therapy to coaching and the focus of her podcast, "Love is Us," which explores various aspects of relationships.

They talk about the difference between therapy and coaching, and the importance of discernment when seeking help. They talked about the possibility of seeing both a therapist and a coach concurrently. The conversation then shifts to relationships, with Karin sharing advice on healthy relationship habits and applying them to dating. They also touch on the topic of sexual desire and communication in relationships.

Here are the takeaways...
  1. The difference between coaching and therapy is the needs of the client. Therapy is for those in crisis, while coaching is for those looking to improve their lives.
  2. Personal growth and self-love are very important in relationships. Many relationships can improve simply by increasing your personal growth and self-love.
  3. Power differentials in relationships can be a source of problems in a relationship. When one partner has control over the money, the time or decisions that are made it's a sign of a problem in the relationship. Couples therapy in this situation is never recommended in these situations. Instead, consult a resource such as The Hotline. (Be mindful that browsing history can be traced to do this with intention) https://www.thehotline.org/
  4. The best relationships happen when there is a conscious awareness of our own self-responsibility, showing compassion for each other, paying attention to each other and coming together when one of you reaches out. There is fondness and admiration, both are good at expressing gratitude and spend time together.
  5. The concept of spontaneous desire vs responsive desire in sexual desire in long term relationships is a great thing to think about. Sometimes we equating spontaneous desire with a genuine interest in relationships, and we might not give responsive desire the credit it deserves.
  6. Clarity, communication and spending time together are the three most impactful things you can do for healthy relationships.
About Karin...

Karin is an IFS-Informed Relationship Coach. 94. The most powerful tool for leaders: emotional intelligence and cultural heritage with Aaliyah Mora-Khan06 Sep 202301:08:14
Try breathwork free: https://www.brendawinkle.com/breathe

During this podcast episode, Brenda interviews Aaliyah Mora-Khan, who specializes in helping leaders with their emotional intelligence and cultural heritage. They discuss Aaliyah's work in guiding individuals through their inner landscape and navigating discomfort to create positive change. They explore topics such as self-discovery, trauma, cultural identity, and the importance of being witnessed in the process. They also touch on the concept of displacement, permission to shine, and the connection between our cultural heritage and embodied emotional intelligence. Aaliyah shares insights on co-regulation, embodiment, intuition, and the importance of boundaries.

Here are the takeaways...
  1. Leadership comes from within and starts with self-leadership. It means developing an emotional intelligence and not only embracing your cultural heritage, but celebrating the heritage of those you lead.
  2. Connection to others starts inward and then moves outward. You are responsible for yourself as an individual, and also responsible for understanding what your responsibility is to the collective (your community, your town, the library you joined, your online community.) It's worth asking, "How am I contributing?" Being a part of a community and being witnessed is incredibly healing.
  3. Exploring the inner landscape often means navigating discomfort and being willing to be vulnerable. When we heal in community and in relationships.
  4. Embodied emotional intelligence is the encoding of our bodies that holds the stories we've lived. Our bodies store not only our story but the stories of the people around us and people in our past.
  5. Boundaries are a very important part of leadership. Boundaries can be absolutely open (too porous), or absolutely closed (too rigid) and we might find ourselves at either end at times. What we are learning is balance.

92. Conflict and Repair: Strengthening Connection in Relationships with Deb Rubin20 Aug 202301:06:48
Try breathwork free: https://www.brendawinkle.com/breathe

This episode features Deb Rubin in a conversation about the significance of connection and the obstacles that can hinder it. Brenda and Deb discuss fear as a barrier to connection and the need to let go of outdated survival skills. They explore the challenges of self-inquiry and the importance of self-compassion and practice. Brenda and Deb discuss the importance of validation and being seen and understood. They also touch on topics such as conflict, individuation, and making friends as adults. The conversation concludes with gratitude and appreciation for each other's insights and inspirations.

Here are the takeaways...

  1. Connection and meaningful conversations are the ultimate nervous system regulator
  2. Fear blocks the connection. Fear of not being heard, fear of being judged or misunderstood. Fear puts up a layer around us that won't allow us to be present, listen and allow ourselves to be seen.
  3. Outdated survival skills hindering personal growth. These are old coping skills. The brain doesn't know the difference between real threat and perceived threat. The skills may have been necessary in earlier life but are no longer useful.
  4. Deepening the connection with oneself and others is possible only when we feel safe. If our nervous system is dysregulated or activated (in fear, stress, fight/flight), making connection might feel really difficult.
  5. Conflict is a necessary part of relationships. Conflict is essentially disagreeing. It doesn't have to be violent (and shouldn't be) but deepens relationships.
  6. The dance between individuation and society is an essential part of growing up. Our culture emphasizes blending (staying connected in social media) over individuation. What we want to do as parents is emphasize and celebrate our children's uniqueness. This is a new place for us as a society.
  7. The more authentic you are, the more able you are to connect with others.

91. Joy as Justice with Tanmeet Sethi, MD13 Aug 202301:02:08

In this podcast episode, Brenda interviews Tanmeet Sethi who shares her journey from being an activist and integrative physician to becoming an integrative and psychedelic medicine physician. They discuss the importance of joy, embodiment, and reclaiming cultural wisdom in mental wellness. Tanmeet talks about her recently released book, "Joy is My Justice," which explores how joy is accessible to all.

Tanmeet and Brenda also touch on topics such as micro-dosing psychedelics, serving marginalized communities, plant-based diets, mental health coaching, and the importance of gratitude and movement in daily routines. The conversation emphasizes the power of finding joy and purpose in the face of suffering and oppression, as well as promoting equity and anti-racism.

About Tanmeet Sethi

Tanmeet is a board-certified Integrative Family Medicine physician and Clinical
Associate Professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine. She has
spent the past 25 years working on the frontlines of the most marginalized
communities, as well as globally with victims of school shootings, survivors of
hurricanes, citizens impacted by police violence, and psychologists in Ukraine
under attack. Tanmeet has created entire Integrative medicine programs from
the ground up, including the first-ever fellowship in Washington state. Her
expertise is widely recognized in both local and national work which includes
leading programs on healing from trauma, thought-provoking presentations (to
both medical and non-medical organizations), and multiple articles and
textbook chapters on Integrative Medicine.

Here are the takeaways...
  1. Joy, embodiment, and reclaiming cultural wisdom are essential components of mental wellness. Tanmeet emphasizes the importance of finding joy in everyday life and reconnecting with our bodies. Tanmeet also emphasizes the significance of cultural wisdom, recognizing that different cultures have valuable insights and practices that can contribute to mental well-being.
  2. As an expert in psychedelic medicine, Tanmeet is well-versed in the safety considerations of microdosing psychedelics. She emphasizes the importance of responsible and informed use, highlighting the need for proper dosing, set, and setting. Tanmeet also advocates for working with trained professionals to ensure a safe and supportive experience.
  3. Tanmeet encourages ethical considerations when it comes to plant-based diets and meat consumption. She believes in the importance of mindful eating and making choices that align with our values and the well-being of animals and the environment. Tanmeet advocates for a balanced approach, recognizing that individual dietary needs and cultural practices may vary.
  4. There are concerns about the coaching industry. Coaching can be valuable but make sure your coaches have a solid foundation in what issues are actually mental health concerns and need to be referred out to a mental health provider, and that coaches are equipped to address the complex needs of their clients. Anti-racism training is crucial for coaches to create inclusive and equitable spaces for their clients.
  5. By finding joy and purpose, you can create positive change and contribute to a more equitable and just society.
  6. It's worth being intentional in amplifying marginalized voices and actively engaging in conversations about systemic racism and social justice. Collective action, no matter how small, can have a profound impact on creating a more inclusive and equitable world.

Lastly, we touched on the significance of our environment and how it affects our energy. As we do spiritual and energy work, we become more sensitive and aware, making our surroundings even more crucial.

It's not always possible to know when you've hit an upper limit, but you can learn to recognize the signs. In this episode, I'm sharing the story of how I almost ruined my new office, desk, chair, and... gulp... iMac when I hit an upper limit.

The book I talk about in this episode is The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks. You can order your own copy here.  (this is an affiliate link)

Her work bridges the gap between science and spirituality with radical space-holding and compassion. This year,  she is on a mission to empower over 2 million students with conscious communication leadership in schools (through their staff, administrators, and office staff and directly with the older students) and find their path to self-acceptance and amplified learning.

Diana is a 6 x International Bestselling Author and International Speaker who uses her superpower of vulnerable storytelling to allow her audience to soften into their own loving presence. Her recently released book, The Call To Freedom: Heal your Pain, Awaken your Loving Presence, is an Internationally Acclaimed memoir filled with personal, spiritual, and embodiment coaching for anyone that is ready to answer “The Call”.

Here are the takeaways...
  1. Play is vitally important and when you incorporate it into your life everything feels easier.
  2. We are all the Golden Buddha. We all have essential golden essence but we sometimes forget because of our human experiences and programming from our experiences and the people around us.
  3. We are told pain is something that we should avoid. It can be a coping mechanism to avoid feeling pain. But when we face our pain, we become a part of the healing of the entire planet. Healing heals forward. When we individually heal we help heal the divisiveness of the planet. We become whole when we can integrate all the parts of ourselves into the whole being through somatic healing.
  4.  When you are chasing tomorrows as in "I'll be happy when...." you will always receive the thing you want  - tomorrow. The work is to be happy now.
  5.  When you are unwilling to feel your pain, you become unable to feel the blissful emotions. Science tells us that even the toughest emotions last about 90 seconds. When we can label the sensation, the sensation can shift. Acknowledging sensations and emotionality is a way to shift your perceptions. Slowing down is an essential component of this practice.
  6.  When you avoid pain, you are inadvertently avoiding pleasure. Pleasure is right on the other side of your pain.
  7. The best way to find a life you really love is to love the life you have right now. Stop chasing your dreams because that means they are running away from you. Instead, consider living your dreams right now.
  8.  You are enough.

86. Better Sleep for the Whole Family with Lucia Oliveria 11 Jul 202300:58:17

Lucia Oliveira is a sleep coach and breathwork facilitator who has a passion for helping moms find their wellbeing while navigating motherhood. With years of experience in studying and researching the importance of sleep and breathwork, Lucia has helped numerous moms improve their family's sleep and reduce stress through breathwork techniques.

As a mother herself, Lucia understands the challenges that come with balancing the demands of motherhood and personal well-being. With a holistic and personalized approach, she is dedicated to supporting other moms on their wellness journey by providing tailored sleep coaching and breathwork guidance. Her focus is on promoting sustainable habits and long-term health so that her clients can enjoy a happier, healthier life for themselves and their families.

Whether you're a new mom struggling to get enough sleep or a seasoned parent looking to prioritize self-care, Lucia is here to help. With her expertise in sleep and breathwork, she can help you achieve your wellness goals and create a more balanced and fulfilling life.

Here are the takeaways...
  1. Babies and kids feel your emotions including your stress. If you feel overwhelmed, so will your child. The better you take care of yourself as a mom, the more you can respond to your child in a positive and effective way. Taking the time to regulate how you feel is the least selfish thing you can do as a mom.
  2.  Breathwork - even simple breath awareness paying attention to your breath - can be very helpful. Just the awareness itself can allow you to calm down, get present, and reduce the stress in your body. It shifts your energy almost immediately. The vibration of your voice with an aw or a sigh can help relax you a little more.
  3. If you are feeling overwhelmed, sleep deprived, sad, depressed or stressed... its ok to ask for help. In fact, it's vitally important. You don't have to do this alone.
  4.  Boundaries and consistency are an essential part of developing good sleep habits for your child. Sleep isn't linear in children, and some milestones may cause sleep regressions. But developing consistency and creating a predictable sleep routine will help support you and your child in creating good sleep habits.
  5. Setting a sleep foundation at an early age is ideal. It's never too late to begin to set those foundations. Consistency is key. And following through on the boundaries you've set is vitally important.
  6. Follow through on boundaries might look like staying consistent in how you respond to your child. Lucia's example was a child that comes into your room in the middle of the night. Being consistent in how you respond will be very important in developing a successful routine. There isn't a right way... if you enjoy your child climbing into bed, that's fine. But if you want something different, being consistent is a key to your success.
  7. The OK to wake up clock by Hatch is the clock Lucia mentioned. Here is a link to find that. (This is an affiliate link. I may receive financial compensation as a result of your purchase) The better your child sleeps, the better everyone in the family will sleep.
  8.  For older children, have conversation and communication around what your expectations are. Toddlers and preschoolers are developmentally able to have these conversations. Give them choices like what pajamas to wear, or what color the ok to wake up clock is. Be consistent and create a routine. Know that it might take 3 weeks to implement a new routine. Nothing will change until or unless you implement things to change.
  9.  When parents take turns at bedtime, be sure you are on the same page with your co-parent. Be intentional about sending the same message. You don't have to do things exactly the same way as the other parent, but the overall message and response to the children needs to be the same regardless of who is putting the kids to bed.
  10.  Our kids need to feel the range of emotions. One way we can support our children is to help them understand that hearing "no" is a part of life and that the no's lead to Yes's. It is stressful to have our children be upset at us, but it's important for them to learn how to hear a no so they don't become boundary violators if they have never heard or been asked to respect a "no".

85. Are you holding yourself back from what you want?06 Jul 202300:38:22

There are a lot of reasons people hold themselves back from what they really want. Sometimes we know we do this, and sometimes we don't. This episode will discuss the indicators you might be holding yourself back from what you really want along with how to shift this.

Here are the takeaways....

  1. There are several reasons you might be holding yourself back from what you really want: Fear of failure, Fear of success, Fear of what other people will say or think, Fear you can’t handle it, Fear of having to change if you get what you want, Fear of relationships shifting if you get what you want
  2. Signs you might be holding yourself back from what you want include: complaining, spending time doing things that don’t move the needle (dusting off product, revamping your website for the third time), numbing, blaming others for your situation or circumstances
  3. Breathwork or other somatic healing is a way to heal
  4. Tapping into your intuition and inner wisdom can be very supportive in determining what to do next
  5. Make feeling good your number-one priority
  6. There are five things I've discovered from this
    1. We think we stay safe by NOT following our intuitive nudges, the repeating thoughts.
    2. We make excuses and tell ourselves stories about why this isn’t the right time or place
    3. We keep delaying joy because we tell ourselves it’s easier that way.. But is it???
    4. We think that what other people say or think matters but the truth is - the people who love us most want us to be happy and the minute they see us happy, they start to put down their resistance
    5. You INCREASE your productivity, creativity, abundance and intuition when you tap into and allow joy

7. The ONLY thing that really matters is that you prioritize feeling good. Do what lights you up, brings you joy, and feels fun. It might not seem like it matters to the other things in your life because it’s not related to them…. But energy has no walls. If you are happy and joyful (energy-rich) it transfers to EVERY area in your life. You become the magnet for everything you desire simply because you are feeling good,

8. You are someone who values relationships. Values integrity and wants to be of service to the world. The most impactful way you can increase your capacity to serve if by tending to your own alignment and prioritizing the things that make you feel good.

84. The Red Flag We All Sometimes Fly28 Jun 202300:20:07

This is the first episode recorded in my new home in Lake Oswego, Oregon (Portland Area). We'll talk about  how to tune into your body's wisdom and inner knowing.

 Here are the takeaways...

  1. As you evolve and experience life, what you know to be true also changes.
  2.  There is a "red flag" sentence that is an indicator that you might be settling: "I just have to get through this thing"
  3. The symptoms you feel in your body are never random. They are always connected to other things that are going on in your life.
  4.  The pacing of our knowledge centers is different. The pacing of our head is faster than our heart, the heart is faster than the gut, and the root/sacral are slower than the gut. It's important to give the body time to communicate. If you don't have the message yet, be patient.
  5.  Give yourself permission to make mistakes and change your mind.

83. Get What You Want with Julie Solomon20 Jun 202301:04:07

Personal branding coach, best-selling author, and chart-topping podcast host Julie Solomon has been empowering lives for over fifteen years through her in-demand classes and masterminds.

With a background in public relations for some of the world’s most influential music acts and thought leaders, Julie launched her online courses and coaching Mastermind in 2016, mentoring thousands of leaders and creatives around the world. Her passion is helping women turn messages into movements and empowering entrepreneurs and creatives to successfully build, grow, and scale their businesses. Recently named one of the Top 100 Leaders in influencer marketing, Julie and her work has been featured in Forbes, Entrepreneur, Business Weekly, Business Insider, SUCCESS, and People, among others.

She is the author of the bestselling book, Get What You Want: How to Go From Unseen to Unstoppable.

Here are the takeaways...
  1. When we hit a rock bottom, the hard truths are revealed. It's in those moments we get to decide if we want to set ourselves free or not. Julie says, "If you know someone headed to a rock bottom moment, get out of the way." Some of those moments where we realize there's no one coming to save us are the moments we accept and embrace our own personal responsibility and accountability. The day you take responsibility for your life is the day your life really starts.
  2.  We can't heal ourselves from anything until we understand what it means to nurture ourselves. This will look different for everyone. Get the support you need whether that means coaches, therapists, books, or mediations. It's likely a lifelong journey.
  3. Your self-concept is what is behind your upper limits. This can be in relationship to your identity, your finances, your success, etc. You can raise your self-confidence by giving yourself compassion, allowing yourself to take risks, being creative and being flexible. Create goals that are a reach but are also achievable.
  4.  You don't need a massive reason why you want what you want. It's ok to simply want it. Massive expansion can be the result of being self-compassionate with yourself. Using affirmations can be very supportive as you create the internal changes you are seeking. Remember Julie's story about the plants... what you think and say to yourself matters.
  5.  Ask yourself, "Wouldn't it be great it...." and then ask yourself, 'What would it take?"
  6.  Balancing our feminine energy with our masculine energy can help us be more whole. Feminine energy is the being, receptivity, creativity and "the woo". Masculine energy is the action, the doing, and the strategy. This balance can be approached emotionally and externally.
  7.  It's important to remember that getting what we want is a choice. We do get to choose the beliefs that we have as adults. If we are aware enough of our beliefs and thoughts we can make different choices. Possibility is where the light is.
  8.  Some people don't get what they want in life You get to decide if you are "some people". There is so much power in possibility and choice in choosing what you choose to focus on.
  9.  There will never be a lack of ideas. It can create complexity because we are complex. To expand it's important to simplify, focus down on 1-2 primary things and the rest go into a "holding tank". This will help you to expand a lot faster. It will help you get clear on what is working for you.
  10.  It's all courage.

82. Empowering Women in Venture Capital: Embracing Self-Compassion and Embodying Success with Caitlin Nochajski 11 Jun 202301:06:14

Caitlin Nochajski is certified as a Mind Rebel Coach and also holds two Master's Degrees in Social Work and Business Administration from the University at Buffalo. She is a unique voice in the Social Enterprise world and feels passionately that when we create businesses where both profit and social impact are maximized, we change the world. Caitlin lives in Winston Salem, North Carolina with her high school sweetheart and their three uniquely wonderful children. Caitlin's core values are connection, space, vitality, justice, and truth. She loves helping women see their potential, spending time with her people, walking in nature, and cozy moments with coffee and a warm blanket.

Caitlin is the co-host of The Not Tonight Project, which Brenda's guested on. You can listen to that episode here

Here are the takeaways...
  1.  The gendered messages that men and women receive as children are very different. Those identifying as boys/men are told that "the world is your oyster and you can do anything". Those identifying as girls/women are told to "stay in your lane, don't be too much, don't be too loud". The story you believe has a huge impact on how you perceive your ability to lead and what you are capable of. It's time to change the messaging so that we ALL know that we have the ability to accomplish great things.
  2.  The impact of gendered messaging around what one can do shows up as early as third grade. Those identifying as girls stop raising their hands as often, stop using their voices in the classroom at the same rate as those identifying as boys. There isn't one reason for this, there are many reasons.
  3. This impacts our society in measurable ways. For example, the United States has still never had a woman president. The pay gap remains at $.70 - .80 on the dollar for women compared to men. 95% of Fortune 500 CEOs are men and 98% of venture capital funds go to men according to a 2022 statistic.
  4.  Venture capitalism includes people who invest in new ventures or new businesses. It's funding to get things off of the ground. Funds are provided in exchange for a percentage of interest in the company, co-ownership, or repayment over time. Because 98% of venture capital funds go to men, this becomes another glass ceiling for women. In a nutshell, venture capital reduces the risk. It increases the ability to become an entrepreneur and make your own fortune.
  5.  Empowering women empowers us all. When women come into their own power and wealth, they lift up other people. Bringing women together results in a collective rise.
  6.  "Try harder and you can overcome" is a lie that the patriarchy tells us. There is a cognitive load that is often not given credit in our distributed work roles. It's important to also give ourselves credit for the things that don't end up in your day planner like dressing kids or planning meals. There are things that take time, energy and bandwidth that we are often not given credit for - either by ourselves or by our partners, families, or colleagues.
  7. Waking up to the culture that you live in and the things that influence you is important. You are enough today, just as you are. You are whole, resourceful, and creative - and so is everyone else. There is nothing wrong with you if you rest.
  8. Check-in with yourself daily and hourly, and honor what you need right now. Trust and nurture yourself. Give yourself what you need. Everything in your life will improve when you do this.
  9. Women aren't taught to consider their own needs or desires as sexual beings. Many women are taught that sexuality is a need for men, and that the woman's role is to fill that need. Sex is connection and should be a way for two people to connect in a way to connect mutually.
  10. Your sexual satisfaction can improve significantly when you reframe the end goal as orgasm and penetrative sex, and put the focus on communicating and mutuality. When the focus is moved from the goal of penetrative sex and orgasm to connection, the end result might become more penetrative sex and more orgasms.

81. Three ways to increase wellbeing 04 Jun 202300:31:38

The topic of sensitivity is coming up more frequently in news, magazines and conversations around the globe. In this episode we'll talk about what it means to be sensitive (or highly sensitive) and three things you can do to support your nervous system so you can stay calm, grounded and feeling really good.

Here are the takeaways...
  1. There is a growing body of research that says that your sensitivity is not only your superpower but it's part of your biology.
  2. Melissa Hogenboom of the BBC recently published an article in Family Tree (BBC) about sensitivity in parenting. Here is a link to that article. https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20230525-the-rise-of-highly-sensitive-parents
  3.  There can be an accumulative effect for the sensitive person of sensory input where brightness of lights is fine at the beginning of the day but becomes too bright in late afternoon, or where the volume on the TV is fine at the beginning of the evening but becomes much too loud at the end of the evening.
  4.  There is a correlation between empathy and being highly sensitive. In other words, it is normal for someone who is sensitive to have an increased awareness of the emotional states of the people around them, especially their loved ones.
  5.  Adding parenting to the mix of sensitivity can be a recipe for stress and overwhelm but there are three you can that will make a huge difference in how you feel and increase your capacity to show up in your life.
    1.  Meet your needs. Give yourself what you need so you feel good. Wear soft clothing with soft fabrics, soft/silky sheets and blankets, create ambient lighting, use airpods/earbuds that are not connected to create a sound buffer to give yourself a break. Treat yourself with the same care and consideration as you would treat a best friend.
    2. Use a timer to add in 1-5 minutes a day of quiet white space. Use the microwave timer to take breaks. For children, you can set the timer for one minute per number of years old a child is (starting at the age of 2) to take a quiet break. Use the three B's to support you in teaching your family to take breaks: bleeding, barfing, or broken. Use this time as white space without consuming or doing anything. You can even do this at work.
    3.   Calm your nervous system with a square breath. Inhale for a count of 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 4 and hold the exhale at the bottom for 4. You can teach this to your kids and use it at home and also you can use it at work. It will not only help you calm down but it can help energize you in an afternoon slump.

In this episode of Your Yes Filled Life, I’m inviting you into a powerful mid-year reflection process that changed everything for me—and it’s something you can do in under two hours.

We’re flipping the script on goal-setting by celebrating your effort first. Because when you track what you’ve actually done—without the emotional charge of “is it enough?”—you get clarity. You find the patterns. You reconnect with what really matters.

You’ll hear how I:

  • Review my past six months using data and intuition

  • Track what’s fueling results instead of obsessing over outcomes

  • Realigned my goals around energy, revenue, and connection

  • Shifted from “do more” to “do what works”

This isn’t about hustle. It’s about insight. About seeing your brilliance clearly, celebrating what’s working, and making tiny shifts that change everything.

By the end of this episode, you’ll be ready to create aligned action that feels joyful, sustainable, and true to you.

80. Learn to Savor Your Food AND Your body with Amanda Bullet28 May 202301:05:15

Over the past 2 decades, Amanda Bullat has navigated her own food and body liberation journey. She found diet rock bottom and a lifeline to recovery while traveling in Nepal. After a successful competitive running career, she went on to recover from a disordered relationship with food and exercise. Her recovery allowed her to earn a master’s degree in nutrition and dietetics from Bastyr University.

She is honored to serve as a guide and mentor to her clients - partnering with them to heal their relationship with food and their body through simple, specific strategies based on the principles of Intuitive Eating, Health At Every Size®, and her unique SAVOR Strategies of Healing.

Amanda works in collaboration with her clients to create practical, actionable steps so they can stop feeling chaotic around food, find compassion for their ever-changing bodies, and feel empowered to live a fulfilling life Savoring Food & Body.

Here are the takeaways...
  1. If you limit your satisfaction with an eating experience and are not satisfied with what you eat, you'll probably end up overeating or binging later. Satisfaction is an incredibly important part of intuitive eating.
  2. You are not alone. You haven't learned behaviors with food and dieting in a vacuum.
  3. Undiet in midlife is unraveling all of the BS a woman has learned. When a woman in midlife can focus on this work to unravel her relationships with the toxic messages around food and body image, there is a trickle-down effect. Women in midlife can model a new healthy way of thinking that could end disordered eating for women of all ages.
  4.  There can be mixed messages about our health because of the biases that are present for women in mid-life, weight biases, the slant toward white women
  5. Peri-menopause can begin around age 35. Menopause happens on average around age 50-51. Increased anxiety or depression, brain fog, inconsistent cycles, hot flashes, and muscle aches are all caused by changes in hormones during this time of life. These changes aren't just physical but they can impact mental health.
  6. Menopause is one day. Peri-menopause is the process that happens before that can last decades. Post-menopause means you've gone beyond the one-year mark of not having a period.
  7.  There are things to do from a gentle compassionate nutrition perspective that can ease the effects of perimenopause or support us as we move into menopause/post-menopause with more grace and ease.
    1. Eat adequate fiber
    2. Eat enough protein to build and maintain muscle and support our moods. Think of the main characters of protein and supporting characters of protein. The main characters include meat, fish, chicken, eggs, and soy. Supporting characters are beans, legumes, nuts and seeds, hard cheese dairy, and Greek yogurt. Try to get a main character and a supporting character at each meal and at least a supporting character at each snack.
    3.  Iron-rich foods. If you are plant-based be sure to include a vitamin C food to help with absorption of the iron. Spinach combined with citrus is a way to do this.
    4. Magnesium-rich foods. Magnesium can help with multiple processes but most important for this phase of life is bringing in a sense of calm and also easing constipation. Pumpkin seeds, legumes, and whole grains are examples of magnesium-rich foods.
    5. Calcium is important at this age. Think outside of the dairy box to include dark leafy greens, almonds, or dried figs. Nettle tea has lots of calcium. Dairy has calcium, too but the other foods include fiber as well which is beneficial.
  8.  Intuitive eating includes untangling from messaging around food and challenging the diet message. Work to make peace with all foods - not all foods have the same nutritional value but reducing the morality assigned to food is really supportive of our own intuitive eating.
  9. The research of habituation means giving yourself full permission to allow all foods to be there. When you run out of chips, Oreos, m&ms... go buy more. Eventually, you'll be able to have the food around because you shift the scarcity around the food. That's shifting the diet mindset.
  10.  Pleasure matters. When we restrict pleasure in any area, it can cause an imbalance in other areas. What can you allow yourself to fully experience that brings you pleasure in this moment?

79. Tapping into your inner knowing 21 May 202300:36:11

Your Yes Filled Life begins with tuning into the intelligence centers in your body.

  1. Shine your heart up to the corner of the room where the ceiling meets the wall (or windshield meets the car roof) as a first step to your Yes Filled Life.
  2. You have three intelligence centers - your brain, your heart and your gut.
  3. Your heart communicates more slowly than your brain. This will require you to slow down to understand the wisdom being shared there.
  4. The lining of your stomach has similarities to the cells in your brain.
  5. The phrase "trust your gut" is based on this wisdom.
  6. When we learn to trust all three intelligence centers; the brain, the heart, and the gut our Yes-Filled Life comes online.
  7.  The pacing of these three intelligence centers is very different. It will require you to slow down to really hear the messages coming to you

The free gift mentioned in the episode can be found herehttps://urvi-patel.mykajabi.com/opt-in

Here are the takeaways...

  1. When you are creating stories, create stories that work for you. Many times our stories have been reinforced externally and have come as a part of our conditioning. Understand where you pull those narratives from so you can separate those narratives from the story you want to carry forward.
  2. Intersectionality is a term coined by Dr. Kimberle' Crenshaw. "Intersectionality is a lens through which we can see where power comes and collides, where it locks and intersects. It's the acknowledgment that everyone has their own unique experiences of discrimination and of privilege." Feeling guilt about the privilege you have isn't helpful, so there is an invitation to leverage your privilege to create changes.
  3. When thinking about changing the status quo, it can be helpful to think of moving slowly. Thinking about plants. If you have a dried out plant, when you water it, the water comes out because the plant isn't able to take it all in. But if you move slowly, pouring little bits of water in at a time, the plant can absorb it. This idea can be applied to our work in diversity, equity, and inclusion as well.  The reckoning of our time isn't a switch, it's tiny actions toward the creation of something new. That's the wisdom of trying to create solutions from a place of understanding.
  4. Your ability to create a space of belonging (or co-create) for others is dependent on your ability to create that space within yourself. That can mean that generative practices, energy work, gratitude moments or whatever it looks like for you to look within and generate self-love and self-acceptance are of critical importance as you begin the work of creating spaces for others.
  5.  As you come into balance with yourself, your space will be more balanced.
  6. Values are verbs or phrases in action. Shared by all and followed by all is critical for the success of being values-driven. It doesn't matter what the value is, when it's ultra-clear it's like rocket fuel for you.
  7. When you live with integrity to what you value, everything goes smoother. Spending time determining what you value can be very supportive, especially when you ask yourself "why" you value what you do. Many times the symptoms of "this isn't working" is an indication there is a misalignment between the action and the value.
  8. Assimilation mode is when someone tries to embody the dominant culture's ideals, customs, and traditions to try to mitigate discrimination as much as they can to be accepted. Code-switching is changing the way you speak, dress or appear in order to be more accepted, and it can be exhausting.

76. Mindset and Emotions with Nicky Hammond01 May 202300:48:16

Nicky Hammond lives with her hubby, two primary school-aged boys and a Staffordshire Bull Terrier in the Northern Beaches of Sydney, Australia. She is a master certified coach, a former coach instructor, a mindset coach in Amy’s Digital Course Academy AND a recovering perfectionist. She calls herself The Coach's Coach because she’s passionate about helping other coaches deepen their coaching conversations, so they can help facilitate their clients’ transformation. She helps coaches let go of the rules that don’t feel in integrity with their values, so they can feel confident coaching and doing business in their own unique way. Basically, she helps coaches build a coaching practice they love. She is committed to lifting the standard coaching industry whilst helping more people work from home in their Ugg boots.

Here are the takeaways...
  1. Slow down. Taking a moment to pause and move through any discomfort you're experiencing is a great way to find space to find clarity and connect with your intuition.
  2. Have more fun. Build in levity.
  3.  Energetics is a science. Whether you call it quantum physics or metaphysical science is catching up with the nuance of energy. This is the science behind energy healing and breathwork.
  4.  Observing your thoughts can help you create space between you and the experience.
  5.  A single session with a coach or healer can be amazing, but it's not enough to create transformation. But hearing is truly a journey and working for containers of time can be really transformational.
  6.  You know you are ready for coaching or healing when you are willing to let go of things that are no longer working or feel ready to embrace ways that might work even better.

75. Trusting yourself19 Apr 202300:39:05

In this episode of the podcast, the theme is learning to trust yourself.

Here are the takeaways....
  1. Your desire wouldn't be on your heart if it wasn't part of your divine mission
  2. The minute you say yes to you and make feeling good your number one priority, everyone in your life feels it. And the minute you step into your full bodied yes, something changes. You stand up taller, pull your shoulders back because you know you are living your purpose.
  3. The things you desire are all rooted in a feeling you want. The work is to realize what you want is about that feeling state, and then to create it unapologetically.
  4. When something feels bad, it's a red light from the universe. Move away from the things that make you feel badly. Move on.
  5. Write down your goals. It makes a big difference.
  6. Action brings clarity. Trust your desires and put them into motion.
  7. Muscle testing is a great way to get in touch with your inner wisdom. There are two ways to muscle test. One is using your thumbs and ring fingers in loops. There is a better way using your whole body. Put both feet flat on the floor, place your arms at your sides, close your eyes. Test for yes (say something you know is true) and test for no (say something you know is false). If your body supports a statement it will gently tip forward, if your body does not support a statement you'll gently tip backward. Create singular statements.
  8. Practice muscle testing in low stakes things so you learn to trust it.
  9. You move first, then the universe moves to meet you. Start taking some steps towards what you want to do. You'll be amazed at how the universe moves to meet you.

74. Balancing giving and receiving16 Apr 202300:41:29

Have you ever heard the adage "it's better to give than to receive"? It's common to hear but it's problematic. You can't ONLY give or you end up energetically, physically, mentally or financially bankrupt. In this episode we'll find a new way to think about this.

Here are the takeaways...
  1. Consider the source of who is telling you it's better to give than to receive. If the person or organization benefits from your giving, it might be worth questioning that message.
  2. From now on, for the rest of your life, when you have to go to the bathroom - go to the bathroom. Doing this will help develop an awareness of your own needs, and perhaps needs that aren't being met. Then you begin to take better care of your physical body.
  3. Consider the infinity loop. That's giving and receiving. It's a flow. You can't only do one or the other. It's like breath... there has to be a balance between giving and receiving. This shows up as physical pain, resentment, anxiety, depression, auto-immune diseases, etc. You can't only give.
  4. Part of being willing to receive is being willing to ask for help and accept help when you need it.
  5.  The good news about setting boundaries is that it's a skill, which means it's something you can learn.

73. How to protect your energy14 Apr 202300:36:58

This special bonus episode includes a portion of day 2 of the Yes to Me Experience.

Here are the takeaways...
  1. As a highly sensitive person or empath, the first thing to do is protect your energetic field by "zipping up" your energy so that you know what's yours and what belongs to the other person.
  2. Hydrate to elevate. Drink more water. You'll notice a big difference in how clearly you think and how you feel.
  3.  Your Reticular Activating System (RAS) filters unnecessary information so you don't get overwhelmed by all the input. Your RAS's job is to filter what's important. You can train your RAS by making decisions around what you want to see. Whatever you are paying attention to is what you'll see more of.
  4. Put this into practice by choosing a sign to see. Try to make a sign that you'll believe but also make it believable. You can choose any sign you want. My favorites are blue butterflies, rainbows, ladybugs, and owls. Feel free to borrow one of those. If you play this game, DM me on Instagram to let me know how it went https://www.instagram.com/brendawinkle/. Invitation to set the intention "show me my sign I'm on the right track" and let go of the outcome.
  5.  Avoid controlling outcomes by giving the universe a chance and be open to what you want OR better.
  6. Think of money as your friend, and treat it the way you would treat a friend.

72. The MOST important thing you'll do today12 Apr 202300:46:24

This episode is a portion of the Yes to Me Day 1 Experience. You can still join us by registering at https://www.brendawinkle.com/yestome

Here are the takeaways...

  1. Your brain creates pathways that can become like ruts in the mud. Creating change takes time and is best supported by somatic healing like breathwork or reiki.
  2. There's no such thing as a bad mood. Mood isn't an emotion, it's a series of negative or bad thoughts.
  3. First come thoughts, then come feelings. Notice your feelings and get curious about what you are thinking. You can't change your first thought, but you can choose your next thoughts.
  4. Expanding nervous system capacity increases your ability to deal with daily stressors and triggers and stay calm. You can do this through breathwork and ThetaHealing® Meditation Technique.
  5. Heart hug and breathwork are great ways to increase capacity and to calm down.
  6. The zombie scroll on social media, emotional eating, and drinking to numb are examples of hitting your nervous system capacity.
  7. When you feel good, it's an indication you are in the flow. When you experience a negative emotion it's a sign you are out of flow.
  8. Find a way every single way to do something that feels good. Light a candle, take a walk, play with a furbaby, do something you love.

71. The three things you need to be happy at work with Sarah Avarim09 Apr 202300:56:26

Sarah Aviram is a former Fortune 500 Human Resources and Talent Development leader from companies like PepsiCo and Avon. After working remotely from 12 countries in 12 months in 2019, researching the future of work, she published the best-selling book, “Remotivation: The Remote Worker’s Ultimate Guide to Life-Changing Fulfillment”. She was named one of the top 25 innovators of remote work in 2021 by the leading company in the space, Remote.

Sarah is an international keynote speaker, TEDx speaker, and workshop facilitator for organizations globally on the topic of motivation in the new era of work. She’s also created and delivered leadership development programs and processes to over 50,000 people at the companies like Google, American Express, Bank of America, and her alma mater, New York University Stern School of Business.

Here are the takeaways...
  1.  Remote work can be fulfilling but it can also be a bandaid solution if you don't like the work you are doing.
  2. Finding like minded people that support your goals that you can talk to and brainstorm with is an important component of happiness at work. Keep in mind that the people you talk to don't have to be in your field.
  3. There is a difference between happiness and fulfillment. Happiness can depend on external factors. Fulfillment goes deeper. There are three components of fulfillment at work:
    1. Joy. What kind of work brings me energy? What work do I enjoy? (This may not be the same thing as work you are good at). Consider asking loved ones, "when have you seen me most excited about work?"
    2.  Impact. If you don't see the direct impact of your work, consider asking. It's important to feel like you are making a difference.
    3. Growth. is feeling like what you are learning and developing is helping you grow.
  4. Three reasons why you might not feel joy, impact and growth include blocks around money,  identity, routines.
  5. Money is a motivator to work to meet financial needs. Minimizing the external pressure that money puts on us we can focus on the internal desires can be helpful.
  6. Identity can include self-imposed expectations or external pressures around who you are at work.
  7. Routines around your daily life might need to be changed. If you want the joy, impact and growth you need to really look at your daily routines. Do they support your movement toward joy, impact and growth?
  8.  Understand your motivations and make a conscious choice about why you are doing what you are doing whether that's to meet a financial goal, earn a pension, or have a company on your resume and then make peace with that choice. Making those choices intentionally can help you make the best of a situation.
  9. Consider placing projects, tasks or initiatives on an axis that compares your impact and what brings you joy. Then seek out the things that create impact and bring you joy.
  10.  You can create any life you want if you are willing to leave your comfort zone.
  11. It's easy to blame a lack of joy on external circumstances but remembering that you have choices can feel empowering.
  12. The arrival fallacy is the faulty belief that when something happens, then you'll be happy. The work is to be happy NOW.

70. The day I won the prize03 Apr 202300:25:52
This episode of the Waves of Joy podcast goes behind the scenes...

In this episode, I'm spending time in Boise, where I lived for 17 years. A girlfriend I was staying with reminded me that one time, I waited more than a decade to win a prize.

I showed up every year waiting to win that prize. Then.... I won it and was shocked by how I felt about winning. I'll share what I won and what I learned.

What I learned changed EVERYTHING from the relationship I was in, to the job I had, to the house I lived in and even the city I lived in.

69. Get more of what you want26 Mar 202300:35:50
Here are the takeaways...
  1. What you want is always about a feeling. Deconstructing the feeling you state you desire is the key to creating more of what you want, because you can find ways to feel the way you want to feel right now.
  2. The universe is always expanding. Your desires are part of that expansion. That's why when you complete a goal, or get something you've really wanted you immediately think of the next thing you want to call in.
  3. There is a contraction before every expansion. That might be a moment of fear or uncertainty, it might be the sudden headache you get right before you go do something that feels big to you, or the way you get tummy trouble right before the big event.
  4. When you are centered in your central channel - the energy centers or chakras that run up and down your spine it can create a little space between you and your emotions. This is a practice.

68. Learning to love where you are with Alana Gentry "Alana Banana" - Motherhood Series19 Mar 202300:59:05

Alana Banana, aka Alana Gentry, is a music educator and songwriter that has been performing for kids and families for over a decade. She is the co-founder of Silly Monkey Productions, producing content for kids that includes live action, puppets and animation. With 3 children’s albums and over 50 videos on YouTube as The Alana Banana Show she shares her message to Be Kind • Be Creative • Be You. She’s a foster mama and host of the “Inspired Grownups” Podcast for parents.

Here are the takeaways...
  1. Giving yourself a way to explore and experience a variety of things to decide what you really want to do can be really supportive in your decision making
  2. There is no hierarchy in music. ALL music - including music for children - is valuable
  3.  Music is a researched based way to help build memory around concepts. Putting words to music can help with retention.
  4. Kids hear orders all day long. Putting instructions and suggestions to music can be a way to lighten the mood, make things fun, and avoid the power struggle with young children. And it's fun!
  5.  We aren't talking about fertility often, but it's something to consider normalizing in our conversations with our children and to each other
  6. When someone is going through fertility treatments, it can be an emotional process. Offering simple support like invitations to spend time, letting someone know you care, and things like that can feel supportive.
  7. There is a bigger picture, and often we can't see that when we are in a process. Giving yourself permission to take the next step that reveals itself. As much as you think you want to know it all, the delight is in the unfolding.
  8. Sometimes if you hold on too tight, you won't get what you need. When you give yourself space and release the efforting, the answers will drop in.
  9.  To get where you want to go, love where you're at

67. Sustainable Mental Wellbeing for Moms with Kate Kripke - Motherhood Series12 Mar 202301:08:32

Kate Kripke a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and Perinatal Mental Health Counselor (PMH-C) in the state of Colorado.

For over 20 years, Kate has focused her work on supporting the mental health of mothers as a therapist, coach, consultant, author, and speaker.

She is the Founding Director of the Postpartum Wellness Center of Boulder, the author of the book Reinventing Supermom: Support Encouragement, and Strategies For New Moms Who Feel Lost, and a co-host on the podcast Motherhood Uncut. She is also the mom of two teenage daughters. She offers group and individual mental health coaching to mothers everywhere.

Here are the takeaways...
  1. Maternal mental health is supporting the mental health of mothers while they parent. When mothers get the support they need, kids do better.
  2. Sustainable mental well-being does not mean being always happy or skipping over challenges. It means that you as a mom have the capacity inside of you to stay steady when there are bumps in the road, so you can feel good, access joy, and provide unconditional love so that you can be the secure parent for your kid.
  3. There is SUCH an overlap between the mother's mental health and the child's mental health. It's your responsibility as a mom to take really good care of yourself.
  4. The systems for support are flawed. And there is still so much you can do to feel better regardless of the system.  Be compassionate with yourself, your feelings are valid and make sense.
  5. The emotional workload seems to fall on the birth mom. There is a possibility you are going to feel a load of burden your co-parent may not feel. Rather than resist it and get angry, it's worth considering what it would be like to accept it and learn the tools to manage it.
  6.  The starting point of mental well-being is self-awareness. From there you can set up habits and patterns that become your way of life.
  7.  A really important question to ask yourself is, "What is the part I am playing in the things that aren't working?"
  8. Even the toughest emotions last 90 seconds when you let them really flow through. The key is to allow yourself to feel the feeling and detach yourself from the thinking.
  9.  For adults, feelings never hurt anyone. The actions you take to avoid them or ways in which you take them out on other people can be very destructive. And very inconvienent.
  10. Little children cannot metabolize big feelings on their own. It is harmful for a small child to sit with a big emotion on their own. They learn to "hot potato" their emotions and push them away. As adults, you now have the capacity in your physiology to metabolize emotions.
  11. If you grew up in a system or a family where emotion wasn't welcomed, or no one was around to shepherd you through tough emotions, or environments that were chaotic or abusive, you may be "hot potato" emotions and may be what is making you sick as emotions. GIve yourself grace and recognize you may need to learn (and be taught) how to have big emotions.
  12. Slowing down by breathing, noticing your feet on the floor, and other grounding practices can allow you to begin to feel those emotions in safe ways while creating neural pathways in your brain, increasing your capacity to experience emotions.
  13.  Detaching yourself from pain means you've also detached yourself from pleasure.
  14. There isn't a specific age of mothering (or of kids) when things get difficult. When your child hits an age that was challenging for you as the mother, that's when things get difficult in mothering. That's often when you know you need to seek support.
  15. We are often taught that good mothers do, do, do, do on behalf of their children. (dinner, signing up for the classes). Good mothering happens when we are being good to ourselves. If you are feeling love inside your body, you can't help but give it away. Same with patience, generosity, and curiosity. It starts with caring for yourself so that YOU feel good and have more to offer, and mother from there. That's when your kids thrive.
  16.  Our joy, our love, and our happiness is in service of our children. It's NOT selfish.
  17.  It's easy to feel fear that your children will feel a lack of love when you say no. That's not real. Consider setting boundaries as part of healthy parenting and use Brenda's 3 Bs (Bleeding, Barfing, and Broken).
  18. If you are dropping everything to meet your kids' needs or trying to catch them before they fall...  they aren't learning how to deal with disappointment or discomfort, or how to be patient.
  19. Mistake and repair is a very important part of relationship building, and strengthening relationships.
  20.  Teaching your kids to do things not only helps you, but it helps them.
  21. It's never too late to recognize the places where you are getting in your own way, or where you need support. When you commit to the work, it's going to be impactful.

66. Boundaries for Highly Sensitive Moms - Motherhood Series05 Mar 202300:34:14

A common question I hear is "How do I set boundaries"? This podcast episode will help support you with some skills and strategies to not only set boundaries but to help support your own nervous system.

As a highly-sensitive person, empath, people pleaser, perfectionist (and sometimes overachievers) it's easy to talk yourself out of setting boundaries before you ever try.

A research study in 1997 revealed that 20-30% of the population is highly-sensitive, and has more neuro receptors to process sensory input in their brains. This is what we are talking about when we talk about highly-sensitive people.

Here are the takeaways...
  • It's difficult for highly sensitive people to receive critical feedback. This means that as a child, if you identify as a highly sensitive person, you quickly learned to do things perfectly as a way to avoid criticism. That's where many hsp learned to be perfectionists.
  •  If you've never set a boundary, the people around you will need some time to get used to the new boundaries. That's ok.
  • Strategies to support you in setting boundaries:
    • Zip up your electromagnetic field by making a zipping motion from the base of your torso up over the top of your head.
    • Your central channel goes from the base of your spine to the top of your head. Imagine your energy focused on your central channel (up and down your spine) and grounding into the earth can be supportive.
    • From that grounded and zipped up place... you can set boundaries without taking on the feelings of other people.
  • Adults and boundaries, use the 4 part boundary statement based on non-violent communication and the work of Teri Cole
    • I noticed...
    • I felt...
    • I'd like to make a request...
    • Can we agree that...
  • As parents, we want to set healthy boundaries with our kids so that they are safe, they have transferable social skills, and so that we can take care of ourselves and of them. This means there may be some non-negotiable things. It's ok if your kids are upset with you for setting a healthy boundary. (getting dressed for school, eating nourishing food)
  • Support for setting boundaries as parents include:
    • Boundaries help your kids feel safe
    •  You setting boundaries helps them in other settings
    • Gray Rock Method (from Love and Logic) - use a neutral tone of voice and a neutral facial expression while you become a broken record
    • Use one statement over and over after you've answered. For example, "I love you too much to argue".

65. Sacred Paths to Motherhood with Meghan Thomas - Motherhood Series27 Feb 202301:04:24

Meghan Thomas is a coach, breathwork facilitator, yoga teacher, and fertility coach. You can think of me as your emotional guide

She believes that we can only be connected to others as deeply as we are to ourselves.

And it ALL starts with our emotions. We have to be able to name and identify what we are feeling to begin the healing process and the process of releasing emotions from the body.

Because what she knows for sure is that trauma and emotions get stuck in the body if we don't release them. And we definitely don't want that!

Here are the takeaways...

  1. There is always a contraction before the expansion. It requires a conscious choice to move through it. The first part of every journey is having enough courage to show up: to get on the plane, to sign up for a coach, to attend the retreat, to sign up for the class, whatever it might be. It gets easier the more you live at the edge of your comfort zone because the feedback loop gets shorter.
  2.  The messages and sensations of hitting a limit come from different places whether it's in your body or your mind. No one is immune to the sensation of hitting a limit. Offering yourself immense compassion is a great way to allow these limits to exist and not stop you.
  3. We put people on pedestals and sometimes we allow them to supersede our own knowing. Tuning back into our inner knowing, listening to the sentences and information that drop in can be literally life-saving.
  4.  When you have the moment and thought "enough is enough" the magic happens. Be willing to listen and watch for the signs. The teacher appears, the book falls off the shelf, and someone will enter your life.
  5. Question everything. It can be the way you can receive medical help and stay in your own power. The medical profession is a practice, and there is a reason it's called that. Give yourself permission to stop and ask questions. Ask yourself, is this the right more for me?
  6. Any of these challenging moments in life can be opportunities for our biggest growth if we let it by giving those challenges space.
  7. We are all so much alike than we are different.
  8. There is often a veil of secrecy around our cycles as women.  It's common to feel really alone. Finding someone you can talk to can be really helpful.
  9. Every path to motherhood is sacred.
  10. You can't define the how, just take the next step in front of you. What is meant for you will never miss you.
  11.  There is an arrival fallacy when people decide to wait to be happy until.... (x,y,z) is a way to lose out on your life. Be happy now.

64. Shaping Healthy Kids with Caroline McGrath - Motherhood Series19 Feb 202300:53:10
Here are the takeaways...
  1. Resentment and shame turn toxic in our bodies
  2. Your kids resonate off of your energy. That's why when you are calm, they are calm.
  3. When you are a mom it's easy to get triggered because your kids can be a lot like you. That can bring up things you haven't paid attention to.
  4. You are helping shape your kids, and they are also shaping you. It can be helpful to let them share what they see in YOU and be open to their suggestions to use coping skills. It's a way to open communication with your kids. Treating children of all ages as though they have something to offer is valuable modeling.
  5. Denying what your children are experiencing (I didn't do that!) is a form of gaslighting.
  6. If we as moms don't take care of ourselves, it's not good for anyone.
  7. Aligning with what you know to be true and listening to your own heart, or asking yourself, "What would feel so good?" is a way to live in high integrity. You know you are in alignment when you feel good.
  8.  Manifesting is feeling what it is that you want before you see evidence of it.

63. Are you or your kids highly sensitive? Motherhood Series12 Feb 202300:53:37

A 1997 research study found that between 20-30% of the population is highly sensitive. This means that scientists can measure differences in the brains of highly sensitive people in regard to receptor sites. Highly sensitive people literally process information, external stimuli, and emotions differently. The term highly sensitive person came from this research.

Here are some indications you or your children might be highly sensitive.

  1. Sensitivity to sound
  2. Sensitivity to light
  3. Sensitivity to flavors or textures in food
  4. Tactile sensitivity - sensitivity to touch, sensations, and fabrics on the skin
  5. Emotional sensitivity - big emotions of your own or elevated responses to other people
  6. Taking on or absorbing energy in a space
  7. Sensitivity to fragrances or scents - strong likes/dislikes or even physical reactions
  8. Taking on physical sensations, symptoms or emotions of other people in your body
  9. You've heard you are too sensitive
  10. Gravitating towards helping or supporting people or animals that need you because it's painful for you to see suffering
  11. Feeling too open or too closed - picking up EVERYTHING or numbing out
  12. Sensitivity to temperature... experiencing certain temperature ranges as intolerable or even painful

In this episode, I'll begin to unpack what high sensitivity can mean to parents and begin the conversation around how to navigate it.

62. Power of Your Heart with Dr. Uzma Naeem - Motherhood Series05 Feb 202300:57:46

Dr. Uzma Naaem is an OBGYN, Reiki Healer and Lightworker. She is an OB practitioner and online educator. She strives to provide excellent Ob and Gyn care. She has also learned and encourages integrative and alternative methods of healing. Uzma is not only a practicing OBGYN but is a mom of three.

Here are the takeaways...
  1.  You don't have to make yourself available to everyone all the time. You can make yourself so much more available if you take the time to recharge.  Your brain needs time to rest, heal, and wire experiences.
  2.  We all have free will. Remembering that you have the opportunity to honor your free will and that of the other person. It's possible for you to hold space for your own experience while honoring the experience of other people.
  3.  Being open to the miracles around you can help you realize there's something out there bigger than you.
  4.  Slowing your breathing, inhaling and exhaling really slowly with a focus on the heart increases your electromagnetic field and creates a brain/heart connection. More than 400 research studies verify this.
  5. Your emotions have a measurable impact on your physical health. Feeling an angry feeling for 5 minutes causes a significant drop in your IGA (an immunoglobulin that is part of your immune system) in saliva that lasted 6 hours. Feeling a happy feeling for 5 minutes created an elevation over the next 6 hours. The choice is always yours.
  6.  Having the courage to take an antidepressant when you need one changes your epigenetics. You are creating DNA protein in your body that promotes resilience and works against depression. Taking that nurture to your child helps them as well.
  7.  The heart carries memories as well and has almost as complex of a system as the brain. Your SSRI (antidepressant) - especially for new moms - you don't have the same number of neurotransmitters in the brain. Giving yourself more neurotransmitters during this time of significant change is a way to help be loving to yourself. Dr. Uzma Naeem says to ask, "is this loving to myself" as the most important question to ask.
  8. If we want to help our children stay in their bodies and feel all the emotions so they can self-regulate themselves, we have to be willing to do the same and allow ourselves the full range of emotions.
  9.  Taking care of yourself as a mom is the most impactful way you can positively impact your children.
  10. Saying "You're having a big feeling" to your kids it can give them space to feel safe in their feeling.
  11. Self-regulation is a practice. Adding it to your everyday life can help to shorten your feedback loop, making it possible for you to come back to feeling regulated faster each time.

Here are the takeaways...
  1.  There's an art to promoting yourself and becoming a credible expert. It should be fun, joyful, and playful and come from a place of curiosity and value.
  2. There is a skill set to telling the story in a way that makes it of interest to journalists. That's how you reach more people. This is something all entrepreneurs should learn to do to create storylines that are topical and relevant.
  3.  It is so important to think about "how do I feel when I tell this story?" and "what parts of my story do I want to share?". You don't have to share every part of the story. You can choose which parts to share. A tip from Adela is to practice telling that story to someone you trust and see how you feel in 24 - 48 hours.
  4. Never tell a story completely fresh. It's best to tell a story after you've integrated it into your life and healed.
  5. Know the difference in vulnerability between the type of sharing that makes you relatable, and the kind of sharing that feels unsafe. You decide how much of your story you will share, and that comes with setting boundaries.
  6. Pitching is conversation. Lead with value, give information, and be helpful.
  7. When you promote yourself, you are being transparent about what you are doing. Unless you promote yourself, people will not know that you can help them. It's actually selfish to hold back from other people.
  8.  Connecting with journalists gives them something to write about. You're helping them out when you share a story. It's mutually beneficial.
  9.  Being targeted with your pitches, making sure you pitch to journalists who write about the topics you want to share will result in fewer rejections.
  10. Working in isolation is hard. Join a strong group that can help you create the stories. Work in community supporting each other, make it a fun collaborative adventure. Remember the adage, "to go fast go alone, to go far go together". Getting visible is a journey.
  11. There are billions of people on this planet. Someone wants to hear your story about your business.

60. How to know when it's time to change with Jen Liss22 Jan 202300:54:13

Known for her silliness, contagious enthusiasm, and engaging storytelling, Jen Liss enjoys finding levity in the mundane. But she is serious about one thing: inspiring people to take action on their dreams. As a speaker, coach, and host of the podcast Untethered with Jen Liss, she helps people let go of the crap that holds them back and step into the life they’ve been called to live.

Here are the takeaways
  1. Sometimes you just know when a change needs to happen. It's not something external, it's internal.
  2. Giving yourself an integrity check can be a way to guide your decisions.
  3. Starting your day off with morning exercises like meditation, physical exercise, writing or visualization is a powerful way to start your day. It doesn't have to be time intensive or complicated. A few minutes will make a big difference.
  4.  Releasing things, and allowing and letting go of control can bring you tons of joy and possibility. It's amazing how quickly things can shift when you embrace the feminine energy.
  5.  Curiosity is a way to build connections. When we want to be right, it closes connectedness. Curiosity allows for an opening, more connection, more great ideas, more fun, and more joy.
  6. You can't be curious if you are stuck in judgment or perfectionism.

59. Go from whiner to "why-ner" with Mesha McKittrick15 Jan 202301:03:57

Ever wonder what the difference is between those who whine about things, and those who seem to be able to learn from experiences and use tough experiences to alchemize positive change?

In this episode of Waves of Joy Podcast featuring Mesha McKittrick we dive into learning about mindset and how to go from a whiner to a "why-ner".

Here are the takeaways...
  1. Remember there is purpose in the fog
  2. Stories from other people help us understand ourselves
  3. Small tiny shifts make a big difference
  4. There is choice in what we think and say. The choice to be positive or negative is yours
  5. Answering the question "How was your day?" can be life-changing when you make the first three things you say positive
  6. Change is the only real constant
  7. Give yourself credit for what you've been through
  8. We can ask why and go from being a whiner to being a "why-ner"
  9. There is tremendous value in spending time alone

Mesha is a mindset coach and creator of the podcast, Mindset Check. Through her brand My Friend Mesha, she is a Coach, Social Influencer and a Public Speaker. She graduated from ASU with a degree in Communications and an emphasis on Family Studies. Her passion is teaching people that they have more power than think they do.

She believes that what matters in life is NOT what happens, what matters is what you THINK about what happens.

Mesha has been married to her boyfriend for 23 years. She has 3 boys and an angel girl and she absolutely adores being their mom. She geeks out about the brain and quantum physics and loves to learn endlessly about this topic.

She is a yogi inside and out and if you put on a good beat she can’t help but dance! Paddle boarding and hiking add to her happiness! She knows that when we live inspired it causes us to take actions that we otherwise would not have taken. It’s important for her to help others consistently take mindset checks so that they can live as their highest and best selves.
