96 | Why we try to be perfect in relationships: Analyzing Sex and the City with somatic psychology (S1:E11)06 Oct 202600:55:33

Welcome back to Somatics on Screen, a *Your Own Medicine Podcast* series where I analyze TV and film through a somatic and psychological lens. This week we’re talking about **Sex and the City, Season 1, Episode 11: “The Drought”**—an episode that, unfortunately for me, felt a little like watching someone turn parts of my own life into a 26-minute HBO comedy.Carrie accidentally farts in front of Big and proceeds to have what can only be described as a full nervous system event about being perceived as an actual human woman. And honestly? This episode is such a good depiction of fawning in romantic relationships.Because fawning doesn’t always look like overtly agreeing with someone or doing everything they want. Sometimes it’s the enormous amount of internal effort that goes into trying to remain desirable. Monitoring yourself. Editing yourself. Hiding the embarrassing parts. Trying to figure out what version of you will keep someone interested. And the more you actually like someone, the higher the stakes can feel.We talk about the somatic experience of shame and insecurity, the tension created by trying to perform a more perfect version of yourself, and what happens when a tiny moment of perceived rejection gets turned into evidence that the relationship is slipping away.I also get more personal in this episode and talk about the parallels I saw in my own relationships—because Carrie’s spiral around Big hit a little too close to home.Ultimately, “The Drought” asks a much bigger question than whether farting in front of someone kills your sex life:What happens when intimacy requires us to become increasingly visible, but being fully seen is exactly what our nervous system is afraid of?Find me on Instagram & Tiktok:@kali.somatics📖 Tired of Being Good: A Nervous System Map for Reinhabiting Your Body After a Lifetime of Fawninghttps://www.amazon.com/dp/B0H53CHKJL?lv=shuf&bestFormat=true&social_share=cm_sw_r_ffobk_cso_cp_apin_dp_TS5ZHVAY9B4F28BTWBPG&channelId=704&ref_=cm_sw_r_ffobk_cso_cp_apin_dp_TS5ZHVAY9B4F28BTWBPG&plpRedirect=mhFallback❤️‍🔥 **Sexual Fawning Course**My on-demand course exploring fawning, desire, embodied consent, arousal, sexual boundaries, and what it looks like to stay connected to yourself inside of intimacy.https://v2.stan.store/kalisomatics/p/sexual-fawning-courseSubscribe for more **Somatics on Screen** and *Your Own Medicine Podcast*

95 | Analyzing girl group dynamics in Sex & the City (S1:E10)01 Oct 202600:47:55

Welcome back to Somatics on Screen, a Your Own Medicine Podcast series where we analyze TV and film through a somatic and psychological lens.In this episode, we’re breaking down Sex and the City, Season 1, Episode 10: “The Baby Shower.”Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte head to a baby shower and suddenly everyone is taking inventory of their lives: the women with children are reminiscing about who they were before motherhood, while the single women are wondering whether marriage and babies are things they actually want—or things they’re eventually supposed to want.We get into the sunk cost of our decisions, the nervous system experience of insecurity, and what happens when someone else’s life makes us question our own.We also talk about female group dynamics and the ways women can fawn with one another—softening our opinions, bridging differences, or trying to make our choices more palatable when our lives, values, or desires don’t line up.And underneath all of it: How do you know when a desire is actually yours? How do we tell the difference between an organic desire emerging from the body and a life path we’ve absorbed because it has been modeled, rewarded, or expected of us?Connect with me on social media: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kali.somatics/?hl=enTiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@kali.somaticsGet my book - 📖 Tired of Being Good: A Nervous System Map for Reinhabiting Your Body After a Lifetime of Fawninghttps://www.amazon.com/dp/B0H53CHKJL?lv=shuf&bestFormat=true&social_share=cm_sw_r_ffobk_cso_cp_apin_dp_TS5ZHVAY9B4F28BTWBPG&channelId=704&ref_=cm_sw_r_ffobk_cso_cp_apin_dp_TS5ZHVAY9B4F28BTWBPG&plpRedirect=mhFallback🖤 Tired of Being “Good” LabMy on-demand companion course for working with fawning, boundaries, anger, the inner villain, family dynamics, work, dating, and more.https://v2.stan.store/kalisomatics/p/tired-of-being-good-labSubscribe for more episodes of Somatics on Screen and Your Own Medicine Podcast.

94 | Analyzing SEXUAL FAWNING in Sex and the City (S1:E7)22 Sep 202600:53:20

In this episode of Somatics on Screen, we’re getting into Sex and the City Season 1, Episode 7: “The Monogamists.”

This episode gives us A LOT to work with somatically.

Carrie realizes she and Big may have very different ideas about what dating each other actually means. Miranda finds herself dating someone whose desire for closeness and time together exceeds her own capacity for it. And Charlotte is confronted with a sexual act she genuinely does not want to do — while also navigating the pressure, expectations, and relational consequences attached to saying no.

So naturally, we’re talking about sexual fawning, attachment, relational capacity, desire, boundaries, and what happens when two people want very different amounts of closeness.

With Charlotte, I unpack the difference between choosing something sexually because you genuinely want to and overriding your own disgust, hesitation, or lack of desire because you’re afraid of what saying no might cost you.

And through Carrie and Miranda, we explore something I think gets flattened in dating conversations all the time: two people can like each other and still have very different capacities for intimacy, commitment, frequency of contact, or relational closeness. Those differences don’t automatically make one person avoidant and the other needy — but they do give us information.

Welcome back to Somatics on Screen, where we use television as an excuse to talk about what bodies, attachment systems, and nervous systems are doing underneath the plot.

93 | Somatics on Screen (Sex and the City S1:E1)15 Sep 202600:37:54

Welcome to the first episode of Somatics on Screen, a new Your Own Medicine Podcast subseries where I analyze TV and film through the lens of somatic psychology.

And for episode one, we’re starting with the pilot of Sex and the City.

We’re looking underneath the dating drama at what might be happening in the body: attachment patterns, the fawn response, relational anxiety, self-abandonment, and the ways our nervous systems can shape how we date, who we pursue, and how we try to secure connection.

We talk Carrie, Big, Samantha, Charlotte, Miranda, and the pilot’s whole experiment with women attempting to have sex “like men” — while asking what some of these behaviors might look like when viewed through attachment and nervous-system frameworks rather than simply as “good” or “bad” dating decisions.

Basically: somatic psychology meets my desire to aggressively overanalyze television.

If you have a TV show or movie you think would be particularly juicy for Somatics on Screen, send me your recommendations. I’m building the list for future episodes.

92 | How to rid anxiety with your next meal with LUIS MOJICA18 Apr 202601:07:36

In this episode, I interview somatic therapist, nutritionist, and author Luis Mojica about the link between trauma recovery and nutrition, a focus of his book Food Therapy (releasing April 28). Mojica explains “food-induced stress,” arguing that nervous system regulation is affected by what we eat daily, not just breathwork or therapy, and categorizes foods as stimulants (caffeine, sugar, skipping meals), depressants (fried/processed flour and fat like fries, pizza, pasta), and balancers (beans, greens, proteins). He describes “seesaw regulation,” shame-free “unconscious alchemy” behind cravings, and how balancing meals can shift mood, sleep, glucose, and stress responses. They discuss examples including insomnia tied to nocturnal hypoglycemia, improved blood sugar, boundaries revealed when removing coping foods, and how culture and processed diets shape regulation. Mojica shares a tracking practice and invites pre-order readers to a free book club.

91 | Unshaming insecurity, eating disorders & more w/ David Bedrick16 Mar 202601:02:25

In this episode, we welcome back teacher, counselor, and author David Bedrick, founder of the Santa Fe Institute for Shame-Based Studies, to discuss his “unshaming” approach to shame and trauma healing. Bedrick contrasts traditional pathology-and-fix models with meeting symptoms—such as eating struggles, anger, addiction, codependency, anxiety, and insecurity—with curiosity, respect, and embodied listening to uncover their meaning and intelligence. He shares a story from a Slovak eating-disorder documentary session where a client’s throat-closing response reveals a powerful boundary and a “revolution” in expression, emphasizing organic pacing rather than quick fixes. Kallie relates the approach to post-infidelity insecurity in a new relationship and discovering boundary intelligence. They also discuss Bedrick’s book The Unshaming Way and his upcoming Unshaming Way Workbook (March 17), designed with step-by-step somatic practices and poetry.

89| Beyond the villain edit with The Bachelor’s Courtney Robertson17 Dec 202501:23:56

Courtney Robertson is best known from Ben Flajnik’s season of The Bachelor, where she was labeled the “villain”—called manipulative, calculated, and the Black Widow—for being confident, s*xually expressive, and openly chosen early by the lead in a high-pressure, highly surveilled environment. In my work around fawning and nervous system survival, her season is a powerful example of what happens when being agreeable or palatable doesn’t actually protect you, and a woman stops performing niceness to manage other people’s discomfort. This conversation isn’t about rehashing reality TV—it’s about identity, shame, motherhood, and what it takes to be visible again after being flattened into a role, especially when the culture is quick to punish women for not fawning.

88| Parvati Shallow’s steal-able secrets to winner at Survivor & life25 Sep 202500:59:56

In this episode, I sit down with two-time Survivor winner and author Parvati Shallow for a raw and refreshing conversation about intuition, expression, and reclaiming your inner villain.

✨ We dive into:

Intuition + Self-Trust: how developing a deeper connection with your body opens access to guidance, clarity, and a friendlier relationship with the world around you.

Freedom of Expression: moving beyond self-auditing and PR-trained polish to share experiences authentically—without rehashing every word later.

Gaslighting & Self-Trust: how building inner trust becomes the antidote to external invalidation.

Villain Work: why embracing your shadow is essential for healing, boundaries, and personal power.

We also talk about Parvati’s time winning Survivor: Australia vs. USA, her new book Nice Girls Don’t Win, and the launch of our upcoming course How Villains Are Made—a six-week live program designed to help you step into your unapologetic self.

87 | Fawning at Work - Workshop Recording 14 Aug 202500:45:17

This is the final free workshop offered by me for the foreseeable future—and it’s a potent one.

In this session, we dive into the often-overlooked survival strategy of fawning at work—where you overextend yourself, blur boundaries, and people-please in the name of job security, approval, or stability.

You’ll learn:

What workplace fawning looks like (and why it’s not your fault)

How it’s connected to your nervous system, safety, and family dynamics

Grounding practices to reconnect with your body and your “no”

How to recognize urges and somatic cues before burnout hits

Practical tools to start setting boundaries without sabotaging your livelihood

This episode includes real participant shares, somatic exercises, and honest conversation about the cost of chronic overgiving at work—and how to begin to build a new pattern from the inside out.

If you want to go deeper, I also share details about SHED, my 6-month live somatic program for people who intellectually understand the fawn response but don’t know how to stop doing it.

86 | “Are You Mad At Me?” with Meg Josephson07 Aug 202501:05:12

What happens when you spend your life reading everyone else’s emotions but feel disconnected from your own? What’s the cost of peacekeeping at the expense of your truth?

In this episode of the Your Own Medicine Podcast, I sit down with licensed psychotherapist Meg Josephson, whose new book Are You Mad at Me? comes out August 5th. We explore the fawn response—the lesser-known survival strategy characterized by overthinking, chronic conflict avoidance, and compulsive people-pleasing.

Meg shares her personal story, including the impact of growing up with a rageful father and a mother with Alzheimer's, and how these shaped her fawning patterns. We also discuss:

Anger, grief, and nervous system healing

The pressures of self-disclosure in a digital world

Boundaries that feel good in the body

Writing about trauma with integrity

Why fawning is more than just “being nice”—it’s a trauma response

This is an honest, grounded, and tender conversation about what it means to reclaim your needs, your body, and your voice—especially when you’ve been wired to abandon them.

85 | Sexual Fawning 10114 Jul 202500:48:03

Whether you’re a recovering fawner or just beginning to realize how often your body says “yes” while your mind says “no,” this episode offers a grounded space to reflect and reconnect.

We explore:

• Why sexual fawning is not about being manipulative—but about safety

• The subtle and overt ways we override our boundaries for connection

84 | Ingrid Clayton on Fawning, Trauma, and Finally Telling the Truth11 Jun 202501:13:49

Dr. Ingrid Clayton is no stranger to the complexities of trauma. A clinical psychologist with over two decades of experience, she’s worked at the intersection of psychology, addiction recovery, and trauma healing—long before those words became buzzwords.

But her work got deeply personal with the release of her memoir Believing Me, where she named, for the first time, the covert abuse and emotional enmeshment that shaped her nervous system. It was raw, unflinching, and revolutionary in how it gave language to experiences so many of us carry but can’t name.

Now she’s back with Fawning: The Trauma Response We Don’t Talk About—a book that goes deeper into the trauma pattern she knows all too well. Not fight, not flight, not freeze. But fawn. The survival response that looks like being “easygoing,” “helpful,” or “good,” while your body quietly braces for impact.

In this episode, we talk about:

How Fawning builds on the foundation of Believing Me

Why fawning is so often missed—even by therapists

The biology of appeasement and what it costs over time

What it means to stop being “the good one” and start being real

And the long road from trauma bonding to boundary setting

Ingrid doesn’t just write about trauma. She brings a level of clarity and honesty that cuts through the noise—no posturing, no sugar-coating, just deep clinical insight and lived truth.

83 | Explaining the people pleaser to rage pipeline04 Jun 202500:35:42

Ever gone from smiling sweetly through discomfort… to fantasizing about slapping someone in the face?

Yeah. Same.

In this episode, I break down the people pleaser to rage pipeline—what happens when your body has been stuck in a fawn-freeze loop for years, and then finally starts to thaw. Spoiler: it’s not always cute. Sometimes, it’s loud, messy, and full of backlogged “no’s” that come out all at once.

I share my own story of how learning French (and drinking cheap wine) unlocked a rage I didn’t even know I was holding—and what it taught me about the biology of fawning, freeze responses, and unexpressed boundaries.

We also get into:

* Why rage is a natural part of recovery from people-pleasing

* Why cathartic rage practices (like screaming or punching pillows) aren’t always trauma-informed

* How to work with anger in a way that’s titrated, embodied, and safe

* The power of translating somatic cues into real-life boundaries

If your body has been whispering “I’m not okay” for years—this episode is your permission slip to start listening.

63 | Letting go of being the “therapist friend”14 Oct 202400:28:19

In this episode we explore both sides of the fawning coin - being the therapist friend and being the emotional dumper. I cover why emotional dumping happens so frequently and why it might actually feel like true emotional intimacy for those of us who are recovering people pleasers.

I also explore alternatives to mainly bonding over shared trauma or being a hostage to someone's intense life stories - as well as what to do instead of sitting frozen while someone recounts some "much-to-personal" information.

It made me reflect on my studies in cultural relations and how fawning is sometimes built into our cultural interactions.
