| 130. My Weight Loss Journey | 16 Oct 2024 | 00:12:24 | |
I thought I always struggled with my weight. Looking at pictures from high school, I’m not sure that I really did. In my 20s and 30s, I became the classic yo-yo dieter. I tried all the diets. They usually worked, but the weight came back when I went back to normal eating. After I turned 40, things really changed. I was eating and exercising the same, but the weight was really coming on. The diets I tried in my 20s and 30s no longer worked. The 30, 60 and 90 day workout routines that had worked for me in the past stopped working. I gave up. I decided. This must be what being 40 is like. I vowed to just love myself and never step on a scale again. For the next 3 years, I didn’t. Well I accidentally saw my weight at the doctor. It was not a healthy weight for me. Want to hear how I lost 50 pounds (now 60) while eating carbs, chocolate and drinking wine. Want to hear how I loved myself through the entire process? | 18. The Unexpected Benefits of Returning to the Workplace with Dr. Camila Umaña Ruiz | 25 May 2022 | 00:25:16
Are you struggling or feeling resistance about the thought of returning to the office? If so, you aren't alone. Today's podcast guest, researcher Camila Umaña Ruiz shares that people hesitate to return to work mainly because of fear of losing the perceived flexibility they gained while working from home. And perhaps because they also have a little bit of social anxiety. However, research shows that instead of gaining flexibility, most of us have overloaded ourselves with work and are striving more than ever for productivity. We've lost the spaces that helped disconnect from work and connect to ourselves, as well as the opportunity to create bonds that support us in the workplace. Whether you're dreading the thought of a long commute, or that you might feel social anxiety from meeting in-person, burnout expert and researcher Camila Umaña shows us how we can reframe our mindset, and even look forward to return to the office or your place of work. Some of the unexpected benefits of the workplace to get excited about include:

| 17. Burnout Signs by Enneagram Type - with Enneagram Coach Hillarie Kay | 11 May 2022 | 00:17:34 | |
Evidence shows that we're unable to be authentic at work leads we start drifting towards burnout - we get exhausted because it takes emotional labor to sustain a persona who isn't us, or to pretend we feel emotions that we don’t feel. In today's episode Enneagram speaker, and trainer Hillarie Kay returns to the podcast to talk about the enneagram and burnout. Can the Enneagram help us figure out whether we're heading towards burnout? Hillarie shares how by becoming aware of when we're adopting the negative behaviors from our stress (or disintegration) Enneagram type we can identify if we're headed towards burnout. Hillarie gives us concrete examples of the signs of burnout for each of the Enneagram types. Throughout the conversation Jess speaks about the connection between Gallup CliftonStrengths and the Enneagram and asks you to explore the relationship between (1) your Enneagram growth type and your top Gallup strengths, and (2) your Enneagram stress type and your bottom strengths. We conclude the episode with a reflection on how self-compassion can serve us; we might not always feel at our best when we're operating from our disintegration. It might be useful to remember Pema Chödrön's metaphor on our being and our emotions: "you are the sky, everything else is the weather". | 15. Planning for Change in 3 Steps - with Wealth Management Expert Aditi Shekar | 13 Apr 2022 | 00:25:36
In today's episode, personal financial advisor and wealth management expert Aditi Shekar gives us 3 steps to transition smoothly into a new career through financial planning.
Aditi has been obsessing about personal finance ever since she got her first paycheck. After spending years working alongside young colleagues, she was surprised at the lack of financial support they had. At the same time, she was frustrated by her own experience in trying to combine finances with her significant other. To solve both these problems, Aditi launched Zeta. She brings a wealth of product and operations expertise with her, as well as experience working in early-stage startups.
During the episode Aditi speaks to us about three steps to preparing financially for change - whether you want to switch careers, start a business, or because you sense your job is in peril:
Identify a timeframe: give yourself enough time to try out something new, and imagine how long it will take.
Put a number on it: given the time frame, estimate how much you will need according to how much you will need each month
Bring others along: before making the leap, talk to your support network (closest friends and family) about your plan and how they can be there for you during this time

Paula mistakenly talks about "headstands" when referring to Jeff Bezos's memo, but it is handstands. Please more about the memo here.

| 13. The Science of Empathy At Work - with Kristin Moody, EdD | 16 Mar 2022 | 00:31:52 | |
In Episode 2 we talked about how meaningful connections can increase the feeling of work-as-a-calling. In today's episode we explore one of the most important elements of connecting with each other: empathy. Today's guest is Kristin Moody - an empathy researcher and educator, and private coach. And... did we mention she's also one of Paula's teachers at the Mindfulness Coaching School? Kristin shares that as humans we're wired for empathy. She highlights that we can develop our empathy much as we develop our muscles. We can strengthen our capacity for empathy which will serve us as we grow at work, as leaders, and as colleagues. Kristin also talks about whether the notion of an "empath" exists in the literature, as well as the difference between emotional contagion and empathy. Emotional contagion is when others' emotions influence us directly or indirectly. Kristin shares five things we can do to develop our empathy:

About Kristin Moody: Kristin Moody is an empathy researcher and educator who uses the science of empathy to build authentic connections across diverse people. She is inspired by the biological instinct humans have to empathize with one another and the potential empathy has to address the most pressing threats to civilization. Kristin went on to formally study empathy and integrate that understanding into support for individuals and organizations seeking improved culture, equity, and access to authenticity. She now teaches, researches, and explores empathy frameworks to help diverse people connect in ways that promote, celebrate, and leverage authenticity. Kristin received her BA in English and Secondary Education from CUNY Hunter College, MS in Education and Leadership from Pepperdine University, and EdD in Organizational Leadership and Change from the University of Southern California. Her research on the role of empathy in urban high school student outcomes won Dissertation of the Year for USC in 2018. Some of our listeners have let us know that the podcast is shining a light on aspects on how unhappy they are at their current jobs. Some are feeling chronic stress, feeling deeply unmotivated, and even dread. Do you relate? Is it time to quit your job? In this episode, Jessica and Paula talk about how, before taking the leap and quitting your job, you can start planning to build a bridge to a new job, career or calling. Specifically, we talk about the very first step - coming into a centered space where you move from an agitated place to the pre-frontal cortex - the part of the brain that helps us plan better and access our creative selves. Embodied practice steps we describe in the episode: 1. Take a mindful pause. 2. Identify and validate your emotions. 3. Release your emotions (optional: with the support of an essential oil). 4. Identify your inner resource. 5. Take some time to loosely sketch your next steps (financial and work-related). Download a free copy of the Essential Oils and Positive Emotions cheat-sheet. | 7. How to Change Careers and Find Your Calling | 05 Jan 2022 | 00:19:10
Jess and Paula have had many clients who are wondering whether they are in the right career, and how to pick a new one? Whether you are just graduating from college or you are in the height of your career, you can pick and change into a new career with little to no risk, and there is a science-based way to do this. Have you ever tried a sport or a hobby to find out if you would enjoy it? Did you know you can do the same with a new career or a calling? Today we’ll explore Dr. Herminia Ibarra's research on pivoting into a completely different career. Ibarra researches people who are in the midst of a career change, and she observed that people who do so successfully have one thing in common: they try out jobs to see if they "fit". This is because our work is an extension of our identity, and as we grow, we inevitably change. Dr. Ibarra says you don't have to quit your job to find your calling. Instead, she suggests taking small steps to find out if you like something new before you take the leap. In this episode we talk about three strategies to find your calling in a different career path:

| 3. Your Strengths Are Calling (how strengths increase the feeling of work-as-a-calling, and assist you in finding your calling) | 08 Dec 2021 | 00:23:00 | |
What if you could learn how to do everything from your unique strengths and find your calling? There is no one else on Earth exactly like you. In this episode Jessica and Paula talk about two ways in which you can use your strengths to find your calling:
We'll talk about the research of Drs. Claudia Harzer and Willibald Ruch, who have conducted a number of studies on strengths in the workplace (and callings specifically!). In their study, When the job is a calling: The role of applying one's signature strengths at work, Harzer and Ruch found that employees who use four or more signature strengths are more likely to consider their work a calling. In another study "Your Strengths are Calling: Preliminary Results of a Web-Based Strengths Intervention to Increase Calling" Harzer and Ruch found that people who tailor their work description and activities to match their signature strengths increase the feeling of work-as-a-calling. You can use your strengths to help you identify your calling in a completely new career. We can find a calling in a different vocation by doing what Professor Herminia Ibarra talks about work experiments. Trying out new jobs with small actions (like taking a course), and we can use our strengths to support us in conducting these experiments. (We'll talk about Dr. Ibarra's work in more depth in a future episode). We'll also walk you through the options to find out your top strengths. Paula is passionate about the Values In Action Character Strengths (also known as VIA strengths). The VIA strengths assessment is free, and the results are the most studied in academia. But the results are more about your values and life in general and you may need help interpreting them for the work context. Take the free VIA Strengths Assessment here. | 2. What Makes Up a Calling | 01 Dec 2021 | 00:17:56
What's so amazing about work that is a calling is that it elevates us, and it feels deeply satisfying to do the work because it is meaningful. What elevates you and inspires you? What creates meaning at work? These are the breadcrumbs that lead you to your calling, but they're also magic in that they can lead you to make your work more meaningful. In this episode we continue to delve into the research on callings conducted by Dr Amy Wrzesniewski and her colleagues who find that callings are different from jobs or careers in that they are filled with meaning. These researchers also find that there are four different sources of meaning. In this episode, we talk about how we can use these sources of meaning to find our calling, and to increase our feeling of work-as-a-calling, and overall life satisfaction. These four sources of meaning are:

| 1. Are you in a Job, Career, or Calling? | 01 Dec 2021 | 00:14:26 | |
Which one of these best describes how you feel about the work you do? In this episode we dive into the science behind these three “work orientations”: how they differ (and why it matters). Jobs, career, or callings, are three types of work orientations. Where does this term come from and why does it matter? Work orientation was a term coined by Robert Bellah in the 80s in his book "Habits of the heart". Later studied in more depth by Dr Amy Wrzesniewski and her colleagues. Jobs help us pay the bills. Careers give stability, benefits, and when we're in them we're always planning the next step. Callings, however, are work that is intrinsically satisfying - when you have a calling, you would do the work even if you weren't paid for it. Do you have a job, a career, or a calling?
