Is it imposter Syndrome, or is it just plain old racism?

Here's the definition of imposter syndrome: "The condition of feeling anxious and not experiencing success internally, despite being high-performing in external, objective ways. This condition often results in people feeling like "a fraud" or "a phony" and doubting their abilities."

However, we have to question, why do we feel this way? Is it due to a system of inequities and structural barriers that have been put in place to make you feel inadequate, or is it just due to being fresh in the job market?

He graduated with his Associate in Arts degree from North Florida Community College in Spring 2011 and transferred to Florida State University Spring of 2015 with dual degrees in Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering with minors in computer science, math, and business. Upon graduation, he was hired by the Department of Defense.

In addition to her position with Barnes, Shana is also an Assistant Professor of Health Policy at the University of Georgia where she teaches both graduate and undergraduate students in the public health program. When she's not solving public health policy and regulatory problems, Shana works with small business owners to establish their businesses and obtain government contracts. Shana is an avid volunteer and currently sits on the board of two Georgia nonprofits. 

Shana Scott earned her JD from Loyola University School of Law, her MPH from Georgia Southern and her BS in Biology from Morgan State University.

As a first generation college student navigating my career and life after college was definitely a learning experience. I made plenty of mistakes, felt all the feelings, and of course felt as though I was navigating this alone! This episode is all about money! You could be thinking that you just started your career so you should just take whatever salary they give you...wrong! You can always negotiate! If they offered you the position then obviously you were the best candidate for the job, so why would you not get the salary that aligns with what you deserve?

I've noticed so many students who graduate at the top of their class, but they struggle with finding a job in their desired field. Dr. Des is here to share some gems with you to help you get to where you need to be.

Stop throwing stuff to the wall to see what sticks and check out these two tips that can help move you forward.

• Make sure your internships, volunteer experience or part-time job is in your desired field. Even if it's an unpaid internship if it pushes you closer to your desired outcome then go for it! What you do now is setting you up for where you'll be 3-5 years from now, remember that in your decision.
• Stop applying to 100 jobs per day, this is not a great method. You need to really spend time cultivating and personalizing your resume/cover letter to positions that you actually want. Remember that this is setting you up for where you'll be in the next few years. Be intentional.

Take these tips and use them! Good luck on your job search!
