E58 | take less. do more. | with Glen Van Peski [Gossamer Gear Founder] | A Book Review21 Apr 202501:53:34

Episode Summary: In this episode we talk through our first hiking-related book review of Glen Van Peski's work, take less. do more. SURPRISING LIFE LESSONS IN GENEROSITY, GRATITUDE, AND CURIOSITY FROM AN ULTRALIGHT BACKPACKER.

For almost 2 hours, we were lucky enough to have Glen on our show to cover a few of his anecdotes from the ultralight backpacking universe, but also some more introspective insights on life, having gratitude and giving to others, while also prioritizing the needs of our loved ones and ourselves. Glen has quite the tale to tell, including how to better stay connected to those you've met/think about often, his stunning wife, living a minimalist lifestyle, and his harrowing friend that saved Glen's life. We'd love to have him back for a part 2 to cover more of his ultralight hacks, but until then, here's enough content to wet your whistle!

Keywords: ultralight, backpacking, minimalism, book, book review

E44 | Nick "Desert Jesus" Fowler | A Nobody Who's Obsessed With The West | Fireside Chats11 Nov 202401:43:42

Episode Summary: Red urine, a dissolving toe, can’t squat to poo, drinking water from a trashcan hiking over 2000 miles in undies that end up buttless, 50+ mile days…persistence, determination, finisher, husband, and father. These are all words and phrases that describe Nick “DJ or Desert Jesus” Fowler, a man who’s a bit less man, and more athletic deity if you ask us. Nick sits down with us to cover just what it takes to FKT trails, push yourself beyond your limits, how to cope with regrets from trail, and impending fatherhood. Honestly, we will probably listen to this episode several times because we just love this guy. Cheers to you, Nick- a true man who's obsessed with the west, but definitely not a nobody.

Episode Summary: Halloween Bonus Episode release, because it's scary to hike with an injury, the thought of it taking you off trail is terrifying. Listen in.

In this subscriber episode of YWIB we sit down with Renee “Azul” Aldrich to cover hiking while married (and your spouse is NOT with you), but also hiking with a potentially hike-ending injury. How’s intimacy when you haven’t seen you spouse for weeks or months? What emotional hurdles do you have to overcome to keep waking up to hike each day when it may be your last? We only had Azul for a short episode because she had to hop back on trail (the CDT) but expect a full-length interview with her in the near future.

E40 | Trail Magic Along The CDT/CT with Galena & Friends30 Sep 202400:59:52

Episode Summary: Taking a step back from our traditional episode style, we did rapid interviews with CDT and (mainly) CT hikers along their treks here in Colorado while showing them some love…via trail magic! With free clothing and swag from Galena Mountain Projects (interviewed in episode 38), out-of-this-world dehydrated meals donated by Farm to Summit (a Durango, CO company), some good-hearted Samaritans from the Howe household (CO angels), and flapjacks from Cucumber and Bloom (PCT hikers), we all combined our efforts and pulled off a top-notch trail magic event for them. Listen in to see how these hikers’ treks were going in late July, and what tidbits they had to share. Enjoy!

E56 | Pacific Crest Trail | Week 16 | Somewhere Near Mt. Etna to the Midpoint & Hat Creek Resort & RV Park07 Apr 202501:38:00

In this episode of Yeti Walks Into Basecamp: Talking. Thru. Hiking. we cover week 16 on the Pacific Crest Trail where we FINALLY hit the midpoint of the PCT, that's 2653/2 = 1326.5. Most of the hiking felt like it was in burn zones, but there was still greenery out there, somewhere, over yonder. Yeti picks up a baby squirrel and skips lunch before a massive climb and just about crashes, then chugs teriyaki sauce. We do some early morning hiking through Lassen Volcanic NP and then barely make it to the Hat Creek RV Park for some cold drinks and snacks before it rains, go figure. Oh, and Yeti went fishing for bears! In our Environmental Corner we discuss gray/grey wolves (Canus lupus) and the Endangered Species Act of 1973 alongside what our current administration is looking to change about it. And on a happier note, we finish with a squeaky clean, hot off the recording studio song from The Fire Once Lost: Someone Else Just For You. Give it a listen!!!

E39 | Galena Mountain Projects | All About Place | Justin & David [Founders]23 Sep 202401:35:28

Episode Summary: In this episode of YWIB we interviewone of our FAVORITE outdoor (or even casual) brands which we stumbled upon in the adorable town of Leadville, CO. Galena Mountain Projects (or Galena)started with ideas and plots in a cold tent in even colder terrain- ideas to bring the outdoor mecca that is Leadville, to life…through guidebooks. From there, they evolved to selling outdoor/active clothing with a rustic Coloradoflair. We’ve used their Sawatch bamboo sun hoodies on the Colorado Trail and basically every trail we’ve hiked since discovering them. Listen to Justin and David’s story about how thoughts became reality- something that sounds very similar to the making of your next thru hike or backpacking trip, right?

E37 | Hiking with a Husky | Holy Mother of Learning Curves28 Aug 202400:35:08

Episode Summary: In this (RELEASED) subscriber episode of “Yeti Walks Into Basecamp” we do a bit of verbal processing with you. Hiking with a dog can be difficult. Hiking with a 1-year-old, relatively untrained (but we are working on it and she's doing so good!) husky is a bit more so. We discuss some of the highs and lows of our experience so far, hiking over the last 3.5 months with our new girl, Loba. She’s a light to our day but adds a whole new level of difficulty and planning that we need to consider. Additionally, we cover some of the gear we use with her, and some things we are hoping to get in the future. We record this one from our tent, so just ignore the sleepy sounds and sleeping bag rustles. Thanks for being a part!

Yes, you heard that right, we were lucky enough to speak with FarOut and gained invaluable knowledge on the processes leading to trails you see on their app. Including its name change from Guthook to FarOut (not a buyout, just a name change) we discuss what spiked Alice’s interest in coding the famous long trail phone app, GPS tracking on one of the original iPhone models along the PCT, why you won’t see campsite icons on some of their trails, what’s happening with wonky trails/mileage including the CDT, the future of FarOut, and even their affiliation with Keith “Fozzy” Foskett. Like beer but not the buzz? We even discussed NA beer. Join us for this in-depth interview on everyone’s favorite long trail phone app.

E55 | Pacific Crest Trail | Week 15 | Desolation Wilderness to Somewhere Near Mt. Etna31 Mar 202501:16:07

In this episode of Yeti Walks Into Basecamp: Talking. Thru. Hiking. we cover week 15 on the Pacific Crest Trail which takes us from the Desolation Wilderness to somewhere near Mt. Etna alongside Audible and Frenchy. Yeti almost went hypothermic AFTER becoming sick from bad cheese, the rains pour for an entire day, we spend a zero in Reno at a casino (not gambling) with Basecamp's aunt/uncle, and hop back on trail into the great blue yonder. We wrap up with our environmental corner where we discuss wolves! Specifically, we talk about why gray wolves are important for healthy ecosystem maintenance and why CO (following Yellowstone in WY) would benefit from their establishment despite strong opposition.

Episode Summary: In this episode of “Yeti Walks Into Basecamp” we speak with the Subaru/LNT team, Jesse & Elena. They spend some 11 months traveling the U.S. to teach and preach the message of leave no trace (LNT) while camping along the way. Think that’s a lot of gas use? Well, there may be a change in store there too! In this first half of a 2-part episode, we cover some of the first 2 LNT principles (there are 7 in total) and discuss a lesser known, visibly stunning trail in Hawaii- the Kalalau Trail (a ~22 mi. out and back). Sit in for this first half and become a semiprofessional in LNT.

Topics: LNT, leave no trace, Kalalau Trail, plan ahead, prepare, camp on durable surfaces, stewards, stewardship, wicked problems

We will be video recording future episodes to get those on our YouTube channel (link below, for those of you who like you watch your podcast- and I know the video quality is bad, but the next episode will be far better), and we will also be including more guests to listen in and ask questions, just because it adds a bit more spice. On today’s episode, we feature a returning guest, Michelle Nagle, from our E11: Fireside Chats / Unsung Heroes. Give them both a listen and let us know what you think!

E54 | Pacific Crest Trail | Week 14 | Kennedy Meadows North to Desolation Wilderness24 Mar 202501:16:04

In this episode we cover week 14 on the Pacific Crest Trail which takes us from Kennedy Meadows North, through Carson and Ebbett's Pass, into the adorable and strange Markleeville, and finally into the Desolation Wilderness where we met one of our BIGGEST listeners, Tahoe Dynamite! We discuss some of our fondest memories with our dear friend, Bigfoot, and his unorthodox use of Ziploc baggies. Lastly, we wrap up with our environmental corner (trying to be slightly non-political as possible, but it's pretty impossible right now) covering recently proposed EPA deregulations, what that could be mean for our environments, and an update on fired USDA employees heading back into the office/field!!!
