Episode 104 – Shantae Tunes16 Aug 202301:41:48

Wayforward’s Shantae on the Game Boy Color was the swansong release on the handheld and the beginning of a franchise in the making. Now, Shantae has not only blossomed into a 5 (soon to be 6) game series, but can be widely considered Queen of the indie game scene. One particular stand out in this game franchise is the stellar music by Jake Kaufman which will easily get you whipping your hair back and forth! Join the XVGM Radio guys (Mike and Justin) as they uncover some of the best Shantae tunes across the current 5 games, talk about the lack of Kaufman’s tunes in the newest entry as well as Kaufman’s wide range of musical genres. Move those hips to the sultry Arabian style tunes that Shantae has become famous for and believe in magic…or…well, you’ll hear for yourself. It’s SHANTAE TUNES!

Episode 9 – In Memory & Celebration of Ryu Umemoto03 Oct 201801:40:53

Though his life was short, Ryu Umemoto crafted some of the best music available on various Japanese computer system games. From Eroge visual novels to working with CAVE on their bullet hell shooters, Umemoto poured his heart and soul into creating music despite not being a classically trained musician. Today on XVGM Radio, Mike and Justin uncover some of his best work full of techno, blues rock, and more ambient electronic pieces, all while taking you on a fantastic journey about his life and legacy.
Out of respect for Mr. Umemoto and his music, we have opted to not take any calls or create commercials for this episode, as it is a tribute to him.
All information about Mr. Umemoto’s life and times was paraphrased from the following interview/writeup by Audun Sorlie: https://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/178187/memorial_composer_ryu_umemoto.php?print=1

Episode 8 – Dat Sunsoft Bass19 Sep 201801:34:52
DAT SUNSOFT BASS! Sunsoft was arguably one of the best developers when it came to sound hardware on the Nintendo Entertainment System, and there’s no better example than Mr. Gimmick. Better known as Gimmick in its native land, this game (which remained exclusive to Japan and Scandinavian territories) showcased what happened when composer Masashi Kageyama took inspiration from his fellow employees’ taste in music, and injected it into this love letter to platform game fans. Despite never receiving this one in North America, the soundtrack and game have been praised as one of the most underrated on the console, with many people reproducing the game as best as they can with Sunsoft’s 5B chip. But the FME-7, the heart and soul of this soundtrack, remains exclusive to the Japanese Famicom console due to the system’s ability to read audio chips. Join Justin and Mike as they delve into the chip’s history, and share their thoughts on Gimmick’s incredible soundtrack, the game’s levels, and the little green protagonist, Umetaro! Episode 7 – C64 Downports vs. Originals05 Sep 201801:23:28

The late 1980s and early 1990s was an age full of change in video game music, and that shift into higher quality was arguable when it came to the Commodore 64. But do big budget titles from the silver age of gaming sound as good on The Little Computer That Could? Or were they even better than the originals? Mike and Justin take a listen to a list of tracks which may surprise listeners and will have you wondering…which one sounds better! From Double Dragon adult film discussion, to trying to name the SID chip with goofy names, plus a “brand new Tim Follin soundtrack and game?!” Sold.

Special thank you to one of our Patrons, Alex Messenger, for choosing not one but 2 awesome tracks for this comparison episode! Do YOU want to pick tracks! We can keep the variety flowing with different Patrons each month! Check out Patreon.com/XVGMRadio for more details!

Episode 102 – The Musical History of Natsume Part 2: Natsume Inc.21 Jun 202301:40:41

Continued from Episode 99, Mike and Justin hit the dusty trail of Natsume’s musical history for a second time to uncover the North American-based publishing (and sometimes development) side of the company. Splitting from Natsume Co. Ltd. in 1995, Natsume Inc. began publishing a wide variety of games mostly in North America. From tales of what happened to the later years of the Harvest Moon series to discussion of the publisher’s focus on handhelds (almost exclusively,) the XVGM Radio boys take shovel to dirt to uncover some of Natsume Inc’s publishing history and how the Natsume Co. Ltd still sometimes worked with them on many projects. You’ll hear a few throwback tracks to the Co. Ltd days with composers like Iku Mizutani and Kinuyo Yamashita while exploring new ground with a bevy of RPGs, fishing games and….anime hamsters?! Yep, That’s XVGM Radio, alright. Stay tuned for a future episode where we bring you part 3 (sometime in 2023.)

Episode 99 – The Musical History of Natsume (Part 1)15 Mar 202301:37:40

It’s Technostasy! Since 1987, Natsumi, a company created by ex-Konami employees, has been one of the best developers from the 8 and 16 bit eras of gaming. However, their history has been muddled by confusing ownership and history to the common fan. Today on XVGM Radio, Mike and Justin uncover the truth behind Natsume’s story in part 1 of a multi-part series on the history of Natsume’s company, games and most importantly, its sound. Hear about the beginnings of the developer and eventual self-publisher, which started out as Natsume Co. Ltd. From 1987 until 1995, the company was host to some of the best soundtracks available. We scratch the surface on these incredible, high energy tracks from the NES, Game Boy, Super NES…and even a PC Engine game?! Episode 98 – Arwing Odyssey w/ Ro Panuganti14 Feb 202301:42:31

Star Fox 64 is sometimes viewed as the evolution in the Star Fox franchise’s musical journey. But with this more cinematic orchestral vision, the sounds of a more popular style of music has disappeared. But with musician Ro Panuganti’s prowess, Arwing Odyssey is born. A Progressive Metal thematic voyage through most of Star Fox 64’s music, Panuganti brings the modern musical themes back into play. Join us as we speak with him as we compare the original Star Fox 64 tracks with Ro’s updated arrangements. We speak to him about how Respawned Records approached him with the idea and how he had to fit the arrangement into a vinyl format upfront. Listen to Mike and Justin break down both of these styles artisitcally, all while sharing some fun Star Fox 64 memories from the 90s!
Special thank you to Scarlet Moon Records for setting up the interview! Check out their site for more information on the album and other releases!
Thanks to Ro Panuganti for joining us to discuss his fantastic arrangements! You can check out the bandcamp here and stay tuned to Respawned Records for the release!

New Year! New Episode! Starting off 2023, our 5th year as a podcast, we’re joined once again by our good pal, NikoTengoku! The Super Famicom (or as we know it outside of Japan, the Super NES) is host to a COLOSSAL list of excellent game soundtracks, but the Japan exclusive stuff usually gets overlooked. Niko helps us pick 10 awesome tracks that we know you’re gonna love, along with a very, VERY silly episode as per usual with Niko. We poke fun of certain game title names and songs, get a visit from not one but TWO legacy PixelTunes Radio characters, AND officially “knight” Niko as our 3rd co-host! Though his role will remain as a guest contributor to the show, we’re always excited to be joined by Niko and he always brings the funny and engaging discussions to XVGM Radio!

Episode 96 – Slayin’ 2 with composer Matt Creamer28 Dec 202201:42:29

Matt Creamer (AKA Norrin Radd) has been one of our favorite guests (and composers) for some time now, but he’s been holding back from us. He’s unleashed his final musical form in the mold of Slayin’ 2’s original soundtrack and it is A BANGER/ROCKER! Now it’s time for you to feast your ears on over a dozen epic tracks that perfectly merge the worlds of modern and retro VGM. From the guys gettin’ goofy about one of Matt’s inspirations for a song (Home Improvement?!) to Justin poking fun at Mike for picking almost all Grassland tracks, we dissect the soundtrack’s sound like never before on the show and Matt answered all our questions like a pro. Step into the world of this modern retro indie that takes inspiration from Guardian Heroes, the early Ys games and more in this truly SLAYIN’ episode of XVGM Radio!
If you enjoyed the soundtrack and want a chance to win it yourself, visit our social media platforms below and either send us an email or leave us a comment with your favorite track that we played on the Episode 96 post. Episode 95 – PS2/PSP VGM Memories30 Nov 202201:51:10

It’s well known that Sony’s Playstation 2 dominated sales during the 6th generation of gaming. However, this was also during the era where Sony attempted to take on the task of toppling Nintendo’s handheld juggernaut abilities. Enter the Sony Playstation Portable, Sony’s first major foray into the handheld market. Many games from the PS2 were given handheld versions on the PSP and while this is an interesting discussion point, the guys at XVGM Radio decided to just bask in the glory of the 6th generation, Sony style. Today’s episode is an exploration into some PS2 and PSP games with the occasional example of crossover. Mike threatens to discuss Castlevania until he turns blue, all while we learn about Justin’s price point on Amazon. From racist Mega Man boss discussions to feeling inadequate thanks to a royal pain in the butt, today’s a great way to break open some Thanksgiving Day leftovers and enjoy some PS2/PSP nostalgia discussion!

Episode 112 – High Score Jamz15 May 202401:40:39

High score rankings have been a thing since the 70s in video games. But the music layered behind them didn’t really pick up until the 80s. Justin and Mike examine these tunes to explore the eastern vs western comparisons. Eastern composers tend to create much shorter high score music than western composers and the guys find a few tracks here and there that do show the differences in tone and style. Filled with influences from prog and classic rock, funk, r&b, dance and new wave genres, today’s episode pulls no punches with tracks from Amiga, arcade, 16 bit systems and even some redbook audio! There’s even a newer track buried in here to prove that high score tunes have a life beyond the 80s and 90s! We hope you’ll rank this one high on your podcast list!

Episode 93 – X-Men Game Music w/ Carlos from Heroes Three14 Sep 202201:56:08

Marvel Comics’ X-Men series is a franchise that means a lot to millions all over the planet. In the 90s, it was the pinnacle of X-citing, engaging storytelling coupled with a major media boost thanks to the comics, collectible cards, Saturday morning cartoons and of course, video games. On today’s episode of XVGM Radio, Mike and Justin invite fellow X-Men fan Carlos from the Heroes Three Podcast to share some nostalgic memories on how the gaming experiences featuring the mighty Mutants changed their lives forever. Choosing from mostly the 90s era of X-related games and their music, the boys dish the dirt on 10 awesome songs from that era. Listen to tales of Mike piddling around with ZSNES’ emulator to make music remixes of Cyclops’ theme. Hear how the X-Men changed Carlos’ life when it came to becoming an artist. Revel in Justin’s tale on how his appreciation for Genesis music has flipped the switch. They share their favorite X-heroes, open up about their pre-pubescent love of Psylocke and try to figure out what’s up with people who are anti-Capcom guitar tones. The guys discuss the deeper meanings of the X-Men metaphor and how it relates to real life in this personal, fulfilling episode that features songs you love AND some you might discover for the first time!

Episode 92 – Nicole Marie T Composer Interview10 Aug 202201:46:42

Indie composers of video games are leading the way with their creativity, ingenuity and hunger to create the next wave of classics. One such composer is Nicole Marie T, who we had the pleasure of interviewing. From her love and appreciation of Sega to her evolution into a Sony fan, Nicole’s video game upbringing shines through her music as she churns out tons of tunes that we showcased in this interview. From hearing about her reaction to seeing her name in the credits of her first game to her excitement over orchestral tunes, you’ll get to hear a prime example of the next generation of VGM composers in this very episode. Justin and Mike are stoked for you to hear the sounds of Ghoulboy, Robozarro and beyond in this composer interview!

Episode 91 – Masters of VGM22 Jun 202201:37:49

If you had to pick four legendary composers that best represents you…as well as all of video game music, who would you pick? Well, that’s the question that our pal Bedroth from VGMVGM (Very Good Music Video Game Music) Podcast asked the community of VGM podcasters…and we broke the rules and picked a bonus one, because we’re rule breakers. Yeah, that’s right. Your boys from XVGM Radio are here to break down all the barriers. All jokes aside though, Mike and Justin pick their heaviest of hitters in their VGM opinions. From discussions on the impressive echo of Iku Mizutani’s NES bangers, to the sentimental tears Justin shed over Final Fantasy 9’s ending, XVGM Radio takes you through some of their favorite composers and the tracks they feel best represent them. Get ready to climb VGM mountain and see the masters of video game music!
Thanks so much to Bedroth and everyone who helped make this June 2022 event a reality. You can check out the other podcasts participating at MastersofVGM.com

Episode 90 – Nostalgic Themes08 Jun 202201:37:31

Nostalgia can be a powerful thing. Growing up in the 80s and 90s, there was plenty of stuff Mike and Justin reflected on in this episode from their youth. Though as always when they pick a topic, sometimes they approach the idea differently for fun results. Episode 90 is a perfect representation of this method of madness. Listen to the guys wax nostalgia when talking about retro television, cartoons and how the theme songs converted to video games. They also go over the composers on the original theme songs and their thoughts on comparing them. Mike gets goofy with the best anime ever (courtesy of the internet meme about Corey in the House), Justin shares his take on Dragon Ball Z’s music, Mike talks about college drinking games involving Power Rangers, and the guys collectively discuss sick days with Bob Barker, all on this memory-filled episode of XVGM Radio!

Episode 89 – The Best & Worst of Gems Driver Songs (w/ specia guest Dya)04 May 202201:53:40

The Sega Genesis GEMS Driver is often considered one of the worst drivers created for video game music. However, we are optimists when it comes to most chips, so today, we’re taking a deep look into the GEMS driver. Who created it, why it was important to Western composers, the benefits of it and the downfalls. Justin and Mike aim to examine the good AND bad parts of it, to unearth some game music that you might not have known about. Aaron Hickman of the Genesis Gems podcast is also known as chiptune and VGM composer DYA. He joins us on this episode to help explain some of the nitty gritty details regarding GEMS and the Sega sound in general. From bad Sylvester Stallone impressions, to Mike absolutely losing it whenever Captain Salty is discussed….to a surprise phone call from someone claiming to be Tommy Tallarico, this episode of XVGM Radio has it all!
Big thank you to our special guest, Dya aka Aaron Hickman, for joining us on this exciting look at the GEMS driver. Check out his podcast and VGM/chiptunes here: https://dyamusic.bandcamp.com/

Episode 87 – Super Nintendo: ORCHESTRATED with Orchestral Fantasy09 Feb 202201:39:36

The Super Nintendo is known for having some of the most lush compositions in 16 bit history. But have you ever wondered what these tracks would sound like with real instruments? Our guest today is Andrew Thompson who runs a musical project where he answers that very question and the results are EPIC! Mike and Justin sit down with Andrew to discuss and compare his orchestrated versions with real instrumentation, while mostly staying faithful to the original compositions. If you’re a fan of JRPGs on the SNES, this is NOT an episode to miss!
***There were some connection issues regarding the first two breaks so we apologize in advance for the static-sounding voice on Andrew. After numerous trial and error, we decided to record separately and combine the breaks after the problem could not be solved. Thanks for understanding.***

Episode 85 – Dimo’s Quest CD-i Spotlight15 Dec 202101:31:46

While single games have been covered before on XVGM Radio, never before have we went into a soundtrack without hearing it period. Taking a page from our pal Ed Wilson over at The VGMbassy, we’re doing a “Blind Listen” episode where we pick tracks we haven’t heard, and learn about the game as we go along. The end result is a hilarious episode where Mike and Justin try to figure out PCM samples’ origins, listen to a totally radical soundtrack we’ve never heard before, deal with an explosion in the studio…and take a caller request from…Janine?! It’s all on this very exciting episode of XVGM Radio!

Episode 111 – Modern Retro Game Music17 Apr 202401:36:57

Many of today’s indie and AA developers know their retro. That’s why there’s an abundance of amazing games available for modern platforms which channel the games of our pasts. Thankfully, game composers of the current era haven’t forgotten the roots of VGM either, as the amount of modern games which rely on catchy melodies, punchy drums and FM tones is alive and well. On today’s XVGM Radio, Justin and Mike uncover some of their favorite game music styled like the 8-bit and 16-bit tunes that raised them. Tons of interesting conversation about Justin wearing diapers, wax nostalgic Strong Bad references (20XD6!)

Episode 84 – Yakuza Games w/ Alex From A VGM Journey17 Nov 202101:55:13

On XVGM Radio, we generally are pretty knowledgable about the subject matter of both game music and the game series we discuss. But what about when we’re not familiar with a franchise or its tunes? We bring in someone who’s played them all and in this circumstance that would be patron saint of video game music podcasts and leader of his own show, Alex Messenger of A VGM Journey. Together, we discuss Alex’s history with the Yakuza series as Justin and Mike experience the franchise through Alex. From misheard vocal lyrics “Can You Hungry – Just Brillo!” to Mike’s experience growing up listening to whatever his parents played in the car and of course Justin had to jokingly give Mike a hard time about a track! Come along for the trip to Japan as we chat about one of Sega’s newer yet most prominent IPs of the PS2 era and beyond! This…is a journey through the Yakuza franchise’s video game music!
Big thank you to Alex from A VGM Journey for joining us on this show! You can check out his podcast at https://anchor.fm/vgmjourney or other podcatchers!

Episode 82 – An Evening with Barry Leitch29 Sep 202102:23:59

Barry Leitch is mostly known for his compositions on the Top Gear racing game series, and more recently, Horizon Chase Turbo. But if you dive deep enough, you’ll uncover a wealth of video game music magic from a man who was inspired by the greats of the C64 era. Starting out as a teenager, his earlier creations aren’t as fondly remembered by the composer himself but the journey to how they became what they were is the path that we have taken on this interview. In this episode, Barry tells us all about working with the limitations of retro systems, the time a tiny TV made a massively negative impact on his Utopia SNES port and what it was like to cram big samples into tiny audio chips. He chats about what it was like working with other notable composer Dean Evans and the process he goes through to write music. Mike shares some ridiculous nostalgic memories regarding Gauntlet Legends, Justin shares a tale about his Rush 2 N64 experience and more on this in-depth interview with VGM Legendary composer, Barry Leitch!

Episode 81 – Consoles VS Handhelds (Same Song Different System)15 Sep 202101:38:37

The difference between consoles and handhelds can be immense…..or….there’s not much of a difference (if we’re talking about redbook audio, at least.) But what happens when we DO compare these two regarding the same composition, but different arrangements? What sacrifices need to be made to make the underpowered consoles stand out? Today on XVGM Radio, Mike and Justin compare several handheld tracks with their console counterparts and determine which they like more…and the answers may shock you. Between Mike’s nerdy ramblings about lyrical differences in Luna’s Boat Song, Justin waxing nostalgic about his mind being blown regarding Lethal Weapon NES’ switching characters method, controversial anti-war songs and plenty of balls jokes to go around, it’s pretty clear these guys are Nutz for VGM!

Episode 77 – Only in PAL09 Jun 202101:39:43

Plenty of video games have only had certain releases in exclusive territories but PAL territories are home to some pretty oddball selections of games; some of which we’ve chosen here to highlight their amazing music. Who let a bunch of Yanks in to chat about PAL exclusives, anyways?! No idea, but you’ll soon forget about all that when you tune in to this episode of XVGM Radio. From chats about what Smurfing as a verb REALLY means, chats about censored European games box art and..being too cute to ball. It’ll all make sense after you give a listen to these PAL exclusives!
What was your favorite track of the episode? Have you played any of these PAL exclusives? Are you from the PAL territories? We love international listeners! Shoot us an email at XVGMRadio@gmail.com or join in on the discussion at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/XVGMradio

Episode 76 – The Wonderswan & Wonderswan Color26 May 202101:41:52

We’re no strangers to covering obscure stuff on XVGM Radio…but this might be the most obscure thing we’ve chat about: Bandai’s Wonderswan family of handhelds. Going after the Game Boy was a lofty goal, one which made the Wonderswan succumb. But today, we dig up the grave of Bandai’s Wonderswan, the Wonderswan Color and the SwanCrystal, to delve into some video game music that we just can’t put our finger on. Does it sound like Game Boy? Master System? Something else? We talk about the rise and fall of the little Japan-only handheld along with Mike’s confusion over this system and the Neo Geo Pocket, Comparisons to adult film concepts (just how many times Chou Aniki can get stuck in a washing machine, super big bro?!) The legacy of Gunpei Yokoi and his tragic end, plus we get super nerdy about the life and death of the Bandai Wonderswan: All on Episode 76!

Episode 110 – Musical Therapy: An Interview w/ Norihiko Hibino14 Feb 202402:14:07

Music touches all aspects of the soul. It’s a large part of what makes us human. In tough times or happy moments and everything in between, music can be therapy in many ways and video game music is no different. On today’s episode, we sit down for a chat with Norihiko Hibino and listen to one of his favorite genre offerings: Jazz music. We listen to a few tracks from his latest album, Jazz Resort, Vol. 2. He talks about his influences (John Coltrane,) and shares stories about his time at Konami (What was lunch time like in Konami’s headquarters?) Mike asks some blatantly selfish questions about Castlevania and we learn about some close, personal composer friends of his. We also get to hear stories about Hideo Kojima and how Hibino’s hectic schedule worked when composing for multiple projects at the same time. For Konami, Metal Gear and Jazz fans, this is an episode you DO NOT want to miss!
Huge thanks to Scarlet Moon Productions and Jayson Napolitano for making this happen for us! Check out Hibino’s album, Jazz Resort, Vol 2. Here: https://scarletmoonrecords.bandcamp.com/album/jazz-resort-vol-2
