#310 - With Magnus Carling22 Jun 202500:51:55

Jermayn Parker and Stephen East chat with Swedish writer Magnus Carling. This is a fascinating chat with a new comer to the Phantom universe who has two story credits to his name. We learn about his jounery from a Fantomen reader as a kid who grew up in the 1980's to someone who gets to live most phans dreams of creating their own Phantom stories.

You can follow Magnus Carling at his Instagram or Facebook, or look at his work on his website which includes links to his novels and books that you can purchase which includes several being translated into multiple languages including English.

Some of the topics we touch upon in this podcast are his mentorship with popular Fantomen creator Dai Darell aka Diane Alfredhsson / Karlstrom. How the real life world problems of an off shore drill rig being hacked inspired one of his stories, his ways of solving a decreasing page count to tell a comic story plus much more.

Who loves a good random phact?

Jermayn Parker and Dan Fraser got over 10 random phacts from around the world. We reckon not one phan will know all 10 & everyone will learn something as you listen or watch this podcast.

Here are the random Phantom phacts we highlight during the podcast.

  1. Multiple wives marrying the same Phantom.
    • Pura married the 3rd, 4th and 11th Phantom
    • 1st and 2nd married Marabella
  2. One of the first comic books published had a cover image of Phantom without the skin tight costume which he fast became famous for (just gloves, mask and briefs)
  3. The Phantom Club in Australia was run out of the space under a two-story Queenslander in Coorparoo.
  4. Name changes from around the World:
    • In the Indian language Bengali:
      • Devil is Bagha
      • Hero is Tufan which means Storm
      • The country Bangalla / Bengali is renamed to Denkali
    • Fantomen in a Swedish newspaper was called Dragos
      • Mikael will be exploring this in an article for us later
    • Sala is Diana and Diana is Sala (Read the full story at this link)
  5. Lee Falk only used the Singh Pirates as a significant villain in one story ever

  6. Originally intended to be grey costume, printers decision led to iconic purple (Read the full story at this link)

  7. First colonial township ever mentioned in The Phantom was Frasertown, a settlement on the outskirts of the jungle.

  8. Third most credited writer is someone most phans have never heard of and likely never read his stories: Peter Mennigen (Read an interview with Peter here)

  9. Longest running continuous Phantom comic series is not Frew but rather the Fantomen Swedish Christmas Album series which first published in 1944 and is still publishing them yearly.

  10. Lee Falk based the Bandar tribe on the real life African tribe the Ituri  (Learn about Ituri and watch a video here )

#210 - Jeff Parker - 'Kings Watch' Writer27 Jan 202201:32:43

The boys Jermayn Parker, Dan Fraser and Stephen East join together to interview Jeff Parker the writer of the popular Dynamite Entertainment "Kings Watch" series.

Jeff also returned to write the Flash Gordon "Kings Cross" series which ended the series of Dynamite Entertainment exploring the King Features characters they had licensed.

If you enjoyed the "Kings Watch" series (or even hated what they did), this podcast is a must watch / listen. Jeff is very candid in his comments and details why he chose to have an imposter fulfilling the role of the Phantom.

He also answers the question that has been on some phans lips since the character Jen was introduced as the missing Walker heir. Was that his idea or someone else's?

Jeff also talks about other plots and tid bits which you may find interesting, some of them are:

  • The uncredited co writer to the Flash Gordon "Kings Cross" storyline.
  • What the inspiration was for giant tarantula formed out of drowned apes.
  • The un named Phantom imposter who took over the role was at one time going to be wearing a Skull Mark on his face by the previous Phantom.
  • The relationship between Lothar and the Phantom and how he became an obvious replacement.
  • How Jeff got the gig for Dynamite Entertainment and then how that morphed into a modern version of the 1980's classic TV show.
  • Why Sydney, Australia faces perhaps the most dangerous beast/alien in the comic.
  • Why its important to mess with fans slightly.
  • When Jeff released that the Phantom was going to die.
  • What was Jeffs vision for the missing Phantom if Jen was not shoehorned into the role.

To get in touch with Jeff Parker, you can follow him on twitter @JeffParker or his website www.JeffParkerWrites.com

#199 - Phun with Jason Paulos05 Oct 202101:42:38

Jason Paulos, is one of the most prolific Frew creators and we have not had him on since 2016 in X-Band: The Phantom Podcast #65 when we where introduced to the Phantom by Gaslight series.

We learn all about Jason including his history of comic creation including great stories of receiving a photocopy of art from Glenn Lumsden (Glenns Podcast Interview) as a kid and photocopying his first comics while stuck in an office job.

One of the interesting parts was when Jason showed us an A3 folder full of unpublished Phantom stories. Some of the other topics we talk about during the 95 minute podcast are:

  • His love for black and white comics
  • How to draw not to rely on colour
  • How he grew up on horror and DC comics in suburban Brisbane
  • His relationship with Glenn Ford and Glenn Lumsden
  • How Jason returned a story back to Frew
  • His views on story telling
  • His views on the American v European panels on page argument
  • How comics should be an escapism
  • Jason Paulos' process on drawing, lettering and colouring his comics
  • About The Gray Malkin Gaslight story

One other topic is that Jason is after feedback from phans on his Frew #1883 "The Poor People's Plague" story. If you would like to purchase artwork from him you can go to his website and or Facebook and contact him which page your after.

We would love to hear from you on what you think of what we discussed with Jason Paulos. You can email us at chroniclechamebr@gmail.com or chat with us via our social media profiles with your ideas: Facebook, Twitter and or Instagram

Make sure you stay with us and do not forget to subscribe and leave a review on our podcast and or our YouTube Channel

Please note that the video (hosted on YouTube) is not the best quality as Jason was having some technical difficulties and maybe not for delicate ears with a few F and S Bombs dropped occasionally.

#196A: The Death of the 21st Phantom06 Sep 202100:16:31

During our recording of our 200th podcast with our patreons and newspaper creators Tony DePaul, Mike Manley and Jeff Weigel, Tony was asked about the 21st Phantoms death.

Not only did he answer but he talked about the current daily newspaper story "To Wrack and Ruin at Gravelines" and how it will show the DEATH OF THE 21ST PHANTOM.

Because it was such an amazing 15 minute chat we decided to cut it out of the 200th podcast and present it together in a separate stand alone mini podcast. We hope you enjoy it!

Did you pick up on the fork in the narrative?

We would love to hear from you on what you think of what Tony DePaul said in the mini podcast. You can email us at chroniclechamebr@gmail.com or chat with us via our social media profiles with your ideas: Facebook, Twitter and or Instagram

#196 - Brainstorming a Phantom Bible22 Aug 202101:27:55

After reading disappointing stories from various publishers and then asking King Features Syndicate about their Phantom bible in X-Band: The Phantom Podcast #191 the boys at Chronicle Chamber (Jermayn Parker, Dan Fraser, Stephen East & Mikael Lyck) have decided to take matters in their own hands and start the discussion.

We talk about why its important to lift the standard of the poorer stories from some publishers who do not have a grasp of our hero. After that we each discuss our top 5 Phantom elements that need to be in any bible.

There is a lot of crossover between the boys which can only be a good thing that even with a wide range of their Phantom backgrounds they can still agree on what elements need to be in every Phantom story.

Each of the boys top 5 elements for the bible are listed below. We also go over some other elements that creators, phriends and some of our patreons also believe are important.

Stephen East's top 4

  1. The Phantom Oath
  2. The Phantom Outfit & Rings
  3. You Cannot see the Eyes of The Phantom
  4. The Phantom is Highly Jungle trained

Mikael Lyck's top 5

  1. The Phantom Oath
  2. The Phantom Outfit & Rings
  3. The Phantom Is a Justice Hero
  4. The Humour element
  5. The Phantoms World ie: Skull Cave, Bandar, Deep Woods

Dan Fraser's top 5

  1. The Phantom Oath
  2. The Phantom Outfit & Rings
  3. Legend of the Phantom
  4. The Phantoms World ie: Skull Cave, Bandar, Deep Woods
  5. Old Jungle Sayings

Jermayn Parker's top 4

  1. The Phantom Oath
  2. Legend of the Phantom
  3. Old Jungle Sayings
  4. The Phantom Outfit & Rings

We would love to hear from you on what you think of the Phantom bible idea, is it needed in your opinion? What would you include in it? Have we missed anything?. #191 - With KFS, The Phantom Custodians16 Jun 202101:37:44

Every since we started this website and the X-Band: The Phantom Podcast one of the most common questions we have received is when will we get to hear from someone from King Features and or Hearst

It has always been a goal for us as we ourselves had a million and one questions that we wanted to ask. After 200 podcasts we got the chance and while we did not get to ask them all, we spent 90 minutes racing through as many questions as possible.

A huge thanks must go to Tea Fougner who is the comics editor for the Phantom plus 60 other comic titles. She was great in answering as many questions as possible and some were not easy to answer.

A brief list of the questions we asked in no particular order are:

  • What is the approval process of new stories from Tony DePaul, Egmont and Frew Publishers?
  • Is there a Phantom bible?
  • Will we ever see a new Phantom TV Show and or Movie?
  • The process from KFS point of view of the Matt Kyme and Shane Foley "Diana and the Heartbreakers Gang" story in Frew #1892.
  • The Phantom and cross over stories with The Raven, Sir Falcon, Flash Gordon, Defenders of the Earth etc
  • Moonstone  verses Dynamite Entertainment.
  • What is the target audience of the Phantom?
  • Targeting the next generation.
  • The 100th Anniversary of The Phantom.

It must be noted that she did choose not to answer one question but you will have to listen and or watch the podcast to find out which one.

She also went over the history of King Features and Hearst and how they relate to our hero, the Phantom.

As always the video will show slides, art examples and props as we discuss the Phantom. The audio only version is attached if you prefer that method. Make sure you subscribe and leave a review on our podcast and or our YouTube Channel

#190 - The Phantom & The Phuture (with Guest Andrew Constant)07 Jun 202101:17:13

*This is the 200th episode actually published.

In Frew 1893, Dudley Hogarth the Frew publisher in his Message from the Publisher suggested that the short story "The Future Phantom: Forever" may be worth a podcast. We listened and here is our thoughts of the 8 page story by Andrew Constant and Massimo Gamberi.

To begin with we go over every story and future Phantom which includes the 27th from the Defenders of the Earth TV Show, the 24th from the Phantom 2040 TV Show and a host of others from publishers like Fantomen and Dynamite Entertainment. Andrew also joins us and we go over the story with him.

What began as a 40 minute planned podcast has turned into a 80 minute discussion between Andrew Constant and the team (Jermayn Parker, Stephen East and Dan Fraser).

Where do you sit with this story? Did you like it? Do you want to see more? We would love to hear from you on what you think of this podcast episode. You can email us at chroniclechamebr@gmail.com or chat with us via our social media profiles: Facebook, Twitter and or Instagram

Andrew also drops a massive exclusive in the podcast on a new story he is working on at the moment. It is worth mentioning that there is the occasional swear word in this podcast - parental guidance is recommended.

#189 - Matt Kyme, Shane Foley, Diana & Heartbreak23 May 202101:56:59

If you love classic Lee Falk, Wilson McCoy and Ray Moore, this is a must listen (or watch) Podcast as we chat with two Australian creators whose work is heavily influenced by their legendary work.

Frew #1892 was released May 6 2021 and features the second Phantom story by Matt Kyme. His first Phantom story was solely created by him. For this second story Shane Foley was brought in by Frew Publications to ink and enhance the original art.

If you are wondering why Shane was brought on to this story you simply have to listen and or watch to this podcast. We chat to both creators and listen to the story on how this story was originally rejected by King Features. We then learn of the lengths Frew, Matt and Shane went through to ensure the story was published and enjoyed by us phans.

The podcast is close to two hours long and you may be wondering what we discussed for two hours? Along with the dissection of the "Diana and the Heartbreakers Gang" story in great detail we chat about Wilson McCoy and Ray Moore classic stories. Again if you love those stories, you need to listen to this podcast.

If your watching, Shane shows his original artwork and we compare many panels that are influenced directly by McCoy and Moore.

As always the video will show slides, art examples and props as we discuss the Phantom. The audio only version is attached if you prefer that method. Make sure you subscribe and leave a review on our podcast and or our YouTube Channel

#186 - Moonstone & Team Fantomen Writer Ben Raab18 Apr 202101:36:12

We are joined by past Phantom Team Fantomen & Moonstone writer, Ben Raab who wrote 23 Phantom stories over a decade between 1999 and 2009.

Some of his stories include the popular "The Spear of Destiny" saga, "The Hero", "The Invisible Phantom" which won Norwegian best story in 2001, the first team we see Kit and Heloise as the joint 22nd Phantom in "The First Assignment" for Team Fantomen.

After Egmont he wrote several classic stories for Moonstone including the first two graphic novels "The Ghost Killer" and "The Singh Web" which was his adaption of the 1996 movie along with classic stories exploring the mythos of the Phantom in "Curse of the Phantom", "The Aviatrix" and "Legacy".

Eager phans may know that Ben Raab has been making waves in Hollywood since with writing credits for "Warehouse 13", "Flash", "Arrow" and currently "Legacies". So obviously we end the podcast talking about how he would write a Phantom TV show series.

One of the questions we ask is could the Phantom exist being a hero in Africa in a TV show with a possible white saviour label being used against him? Ben also tells us how he would write a Phantom TV show.

As always the video will show slides, art examples and props as we discuss the Phantom. The audio only version is attached if you prefer that method. Make sure you stay with us and do not forget to subscribe and leave a review on our podcast and or our YouTube Channel

#183 - Frew Crew 5 Year Retrospect28 Feb 202101:43:28

HAPPY BIRTHDAY FREW CREW!!!

Tuesday 23 February we celebrated 5 years of the Frew Crew releasing their first comic and we discussed what they have done throughout the years. Plus we will try and play Nostradamus on what we think they will do in the future.

Tale of the tape

After Jim Shepherd's death in April 2013, Judith and their son Stephen stepped in and kept the title alive. Stephen introduced a number of initiatives, such as the Frew website, purchased a license for the posters and brought in the infamous Replica Series. Stephen also started the process of improving the covers.

In 2014 Dudley Hogarth came in to replace Stephen. Then in December 2015 Judith signed off and after almost two months of no Frew comics, Frew issue 1745  was released on 23 February 2016. It has been often described, particularly by members of Chronical chamber, as a Frew-naissance ever since.

The Frew Crew are:

  • Glenn Ford: Co-Director
  • Rene White: Co-Director
  • Dudley Hogarth: Publisher
  • Sha Hua: Production Coordinator
  • Frank Schultz: Production Manager

Issues per Year Frew released are:

  • 2016: 28
  • 2017: 36

  • 2020: 34

Key milestones of each year

2016

2020

We then asked a heap of questions:

  • What has been the THREE best things they have done
  • What has been the THREE worst things they have done
  • If Frew Crew were to end tomorrow, what would be their lasting legacy?
  • Which has been your top THREE moments with Frew?
  • What’s been your favourite Frew product?
  • What’s been your favourite Frew comic/tpb?
  • Looking into the future. What is the next step for Frew?
  • If you were to join Frew, what would you do?

#182 - Happy 85th Birthday16 Feb 202101:48:33

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

It is The Phantoms 85th Birthday - on this day back in 1936, something amazing happened with the debut of a comic strip in the newspapers that has changed the world and many peoples lives.

We at Chronicle Chamber have celebrated the birthday by talking about each of the decades in detail and going over what we believe are the key moments through out the Phantoms history.

Have a listen and tell us what you agree with and do not agree with. Have we missed any key dates or moments? We would love to hear back from you. Here are a few moments we discussed in the podcast. The video will have images showing the dates.

1930's

Oath of The Phantom, Comics being published around the world, strong character development, top stories, world wide appeal.

1940's

WW2, Frew Publications, Wilson McCoy and Alfred Bester filling in for Lee Falk and Ray Moore, First mainstream merchandise, serial featuring Tom Tyler, the first engagement, Mr Walker alias, love interests from other characters to Diana and The Phantom.

1950's

Heaps of new countries (Brazil, Sweden, Indonesia, Denmark, Norway etc), Jungle Patrol, the good mark and the Female Phantom were both introduced. Our Phantom was first introduced as the 21st Phantom

1960's

Sy Barry started on the Daily and Sunday strips, modernisation of the Phantom being moved to Africa and Bengalla becoming independent breaking  from its former colonialism rule. RGE/Semic started creating their own stories. Luaga, General Bababu, Eden, Rex, Whispering Woods, Keela Wee, Phantom Peak and Bomsbay Prison were all introduced.

1970's

The Phantom and Diana finally were married and then had two children. The stories from Sweden had a left lean towards them and emerged as the biggest producer of Phantom stories in the world. Old Man Mozz, Kit and Heloise, Dogai Singh, Mori tribe, Wasaki Tribe, origin of the Bandar friendship, the Dolphins, Hzz and Steggy were all introduced. The 7th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th and 18th Phantoms are all introduced to readers also.

1980's

Jim Shepherd took over Frew and modernised the comic. There was an explosion of merchandise in Australia and Sweden helped by the popularity of the clubs. Comic numbers sold in Brazil, Sweden and Australia all peaked. Defenders of the Earth was introduced. Fantomen Land in Sweden was opened and Frew went from the dominate blue cover to yellow strip top.

1990's

The 1996 Billy Zane movie, Sy Barry retiring and Lee Falk passing away was the big three of the decade. We were also introduced to Lubanaga, perhaps the biggest foe the 21st Phantom has ever dealt with. Fantomen moved to colour and Semic sold their rights to Egmont. Unfortunately with Lee Falk nearing his end and Sy barry retiring the newspaper stories hit an all time low. We also saw the 2040 Phantom TV show.

2000's

Moonstone started publishing comics, Ulf Granberg was instrumental is saving the newspaper strips existence with Cleas Remeirthi and Tony DePaul. Continue decline in Egmont and Frew sales. Introduction of Sandal Singh and the Python as major arch nemeses to the 21st Phantom.

2010's

End of an era with Ulf Granberg retiring and Jim Shepherd passing away. Frew Crew picked up the mantle and ran with it. Kid Phantom and Fantomen Kids started. Introduction to the Nomad and numerous swapping of newspaper artists. A bigger focus on Australian created content.

We then discussed our favourite decades and had a go at predicting what we believe will be key moments throughout the 2020's.

#297 - Mad Cave Studios Defenders of the Earth mid series review31 Dec 202400:44:22

Some phans will know that we have reviews of all of the Mad Cave Studios Defenders of the Earth Series up on our YouTube Channel and website but we wanted to conduct a mid series review with the whole extended team. Join Stephen East, Dan Fraser and Jermayn Parker with our USA reviewer Scott Waldyn.

We love comments and feedback from the Phantom phans from around the world. You can either email us, leave your comments at our YouTube Channel, and or leave them at our social media platforms in Facebook, Twitter and or Instagram.

Some of the discussion points we discuss are:

  • The Phantom being a Ghost Who Walks
  • Council of Phantoms. Do we like it? Do we hate it? Is it real?
  • Does this Phantom behave like our Phantom or any Phantoms we have read in the chronicles?
  • We discuss the oath of the Phantom being my 'son and their sons will follow' or should it be 'descendants'?
  • If the DotE Phantom is the 27th. Kurt would then be the 28th, If the DotE Phantom becomes the Phantom again, will that make him the 27th or 29th?
  • Was shrinking the mansion so Mandrake can take it in his pocket a clever way to get around the Phantom’s quandary?
  • Zuffy's transformation into a laughable character to someone with bite.
  • Lothars ex wife is mentioned. Dale is seen at end of issue 4. No mention yet of the Phantom’s wife and or Nardia.
  • With the future Mad Cave Studios sand alone series. Would we like to see it outside the DotE arc?
  • Do you like the series? What do you like and do not like?
  • What do you think will happen in the next four issues?

We love comments and feedback from the Phantom phans from around the world. Do you like the series? The artwork? The plot? Or you have opinions on where the story will be going, please let us know. #180 - The Phantom & Colour28 Jan 202102:20:27

Are Frew readers colourblind?

If you like watching your podcasts with props, this will be a podcast to watch on YouTube.

To discuss The Phantom & colour in detail we are joined by Kevin Patrick, author of "The Phantom Unmasked: America's First Superhero" and Indian phan Ankit Mitra who reviews the Regal Publishers Phantom comics for us. Together with Jermayn and Dan they discuss The Phantom and colour specifically focusing on the Frew comic published in Australia.

We discuss all means of topics including the quality of the product with the colouring in quality, comparing colour styles of DC and Marvel, comparing the paper quality and of course the impact it will mean to the price of the comic.

What makes this podcast work is that Ankit and Kevin know what they are talking about having a history of comics outside the Phantom.

We touch upon several discussions including the history of Indians comics and why colour is so important to them. Along with Kevin's knowledge of India, he also talked about his research into the Swedish market and even looked at why and what lessons Frew could learn with Swedens and Norways Fantomen and Fantomet change to colour in 1991.

To finish the podcast we all answer some final questions

  • Will colour Frew comics generate new younger readers for the Frew Magazine?
  • Should Frew publish all the comics in colour, keep black and white or do a nice mixture of both?
  • If you were in charge of Frew, what would you do with the colour and black and white mix of comics?
  • If you were in charge of Frew, would you colour newspaper reprint stories?
  • Would you be happy with less Frew comics a year if all in colour?

We would love to hear from you on what you think of this podcast episode along with your answers to the above questions. You can email us at chroniclechamebr@gmail.com or via our social media profiles: Facebook, Twitter and or Instagram.
