Announcement – “Making RPG Podcasts Accessible” at PodCon213 Jan 201900:05:03

Writing Alchemy Announcement Summary

I will be leading a workshop about “Making RPG Podcasts Accessible” on January 20th at PodCon2 in Seattle. For those who can’t attend this workshop in-person, it will be in the remote attendance feed for PodCon2. As an accessibility feature, I have created reference document that goes over all of the topics covered in the workshop, which you can find on the Writing Alchemy website.

Workshop Description: In the US one in four adults has a disability. This means that there are a lot of disabled people in the RPG podcast community, however physical, social, and game play barriers often prevent the full inclusion of disabled participants and audience members. This workshop is about identifying common barriers and addressing them. We will discuss areas to be aware of, accessibility tools, strategies for handling pitfalls, and ways to improve representation of disabled people.

Also, on Tuesday you can check out my interview with Tess on the I Am Hear podcast where we talk about disability, accessibility, my first experiences with role-playing games, and the way I’m designing my role-playing game, Magic Goes Awry, around the core principle of accessibility.

Writing Alchemy Unfamiliar Heroes 17 Summary

Our three heroes begin their negotiations with the owlbears in the seventeenth game episode of Unfamiliar Heroes. Join them for the excitement of river adventures and camping with owlbears!

Willa the gecko lizardperson rogue, Tarragon the orc bard, and D’Zân the weredragon druid are participating in The Owlbear Reintroduction Program, a project that is reestablishing owlbears in areas where the owlbear populations have been previously wiped out. Of course, this is not as simple as it sounds, because owlbears are large, ferocious, magical predators. Throw in a group of skilled poachers determined to steal owlbear eggs and things are bound to get interesting. This improvised, tabletop adventure was created with the Magic Goes Awry role-playing system!

Unfamiliar Heroes is a new podcast series where people with disabilities, chronic illnesses, or diverse minds use tabletop role-playing games to together create stories that center disabled, sick, and mentally diverse characters. In its core values this project centers the experiences of people living at the intersections of oppression. Unfamiliar Heroes is part of the Writing Alchemy Podcast.

Writing Alchemy Unfamiliar Heroes 15 Summary

In the fifteenth game episode of Unfamiliar Heroes, our three heroes arrive in Islandtown, the home of the Crossroads Wildnerness Keepers. Join them as potions are brewed, paper is shuffled, and a wagon is wreathed in flames!

Webcomic Recommendations

Validation: This comic focuses on the experiences of a trans woman who is involved in a modern geeky gaming and comic book culture. It touches on big issues without getting bogged down into drama. Highly recommended!: http://www.validationcomic.com/

Rock and Riot: This is a completed comic that is a series of short, fast paced chapters with queer, trans, nonbinary, and asexual characters in a 1950s setting. It has strong POC representation. Highly recommended!: http://rockandriotcomic.com/

White Noise: This comic focuses on the lives of monsters in a fantasy setting that blends magic with real world technology. It has gorgeous art and strong queer, trans, and POC representation, along with some disability representation. Be aware that it does have significant amounts of intense content. However, there is space in the comic for characters to be supported around their trauma and to heal. That and the connections between the characters make the intense content in this comic easier to hand. (Text below each page transcribes the entire page. I find that reading it highlights interesting aspects of the comic.): http://www.white-noise-comic.com/

Tripping Over You: This is a cute modern romance and relationship comic centered on a male-male couple: http://trippingoveryou.com/

Tripping Over You dramatized on youtube (All of the dialogue is read by voice actors.): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zZ2Ax7miCE&list=PLR_6hcnjqYCbWvNlLZJi27zlu3vDfpP_m

Questionable Content: This comic focuses on the lives of a large group of friends in a mostly modern setting that includes sentient AIs with android bodies. The current storyline has a large cast that includes respectful representation of trans and queer characters, as well as good representation of neurodiversity. (Personally, I don’t like the oldest stuff in the archive and I recommend avoiding the joke comics and guest comics the author posts on holidays as those tend toward violent humor.): http://questionablecontent.net/

Love Not Found: This is a cute scifi romance comic that is focused on a main male-female couple, which also contains significant time spent on other couples. It has significant queer, nonbinary, and POC representation. At times it touches on some intense content (mostly focused around a significant trauma in the past of the central character.): http://www.lovenotfound.com/

Xkcd: This comic is a bunch of individual science, tech, and nerd jokes. (Note that this comic has a few reoccurring characters, but it does not have a plot): https://xkcd.com/

Rain: This is a modern high school drama centering on a queer trans woman and her group of friends. There is also significant queer, nonbinary, and asexual representation. Note that there is significant angst, drama, and tough stuff that the teens here are dealing with. However, the connections between the characters and the loving community they create make this heavy content easier manage.: http://rain.thecomicseries.com/

The Less Than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal: This is a really lovely comic about two gay guys that has some family conflict, that also is really beautiful and pretty chill for the most part. It is a comic about a modern day road trip that contains significant POC representation. http://tjandamal.com/

Never Satisfied: This high fantasy comic focuses on a large cast of characters with great queer, nonbinary, and POC representation. The plot has many sweet moments, but it also contains some intense content. There are multiple nonbinary main characters!: http://www.neversatisfiedcomic.com/comic/never-satisfied

Bonus Cast 9 – Anxiety Tools: Orienting27 Oct 202000:28:27

Writing Alchemy Bonus Cast 9 Summary

Today I’m sharing some tools I have been using that have been extremely helpful for dealing with anxiety. I’ll also be giving an update on what is going on for me, and I’ll wrap up by sharing some of the projects I’ve been working on.

The goal of this tool set is to help a person’s nervous system connect to the present moment. The way I understand it is that when people are upset, their mind is usually focusing on the past or the future. Helping the nervous system connect to the present helps it calm down. I find that these tools are helpful during stressful moments, but they can also can be used at other times to increase calm and relaxation. For example, I often use them to help myself get sleepy at bedtime.

She is wearing an air filtering mask of the type that people with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity sometimes wear. On the right is a white muscular superhero wearing a very gay, blue superhero outfit. Unfamiliar Heroes 0 – Foundations and Ground Rules20 Jul 201700:33:28

Writing Alchemy Unfamiliar Heroes 0 Summary

In this foundational episode of Unfamiliar Heroes, which I’m calling Episode Zero, I start off with a discussion of disability representation and the reasons why I feel that this project is so needed. Next I go over the ways that participants who live at the intersections of oppression are centered in this project. Finally I discuss the eight game ground rules which are designed to keep games accessible and inclusive.

Unfamiliar Heroes is a podcast series in which three disabled, neurodiverse, and/or chronically ill players and a game master play story-focused tabletop role-playing games where all of the player characters have disabilities, diverse minds, and/or chronic illnesses. In its core values, this project centers the experiences of people living at the intersections of oppression. Unfamiliar Heroes is part of the Writing Alchemy Podcast.

Note: The game ground rules begin at minute 14.

This graphic is a black and white cartoon-style drawing of two tough-looking anthropomorphized cats with their hands in their pockets, looking up enigmatically at the viewer. They are both wearing air-filtering face masks that cover their noses and mouths (these are a kind of mask often used by people with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity). The cat on the left has stripes on their face and is wearing a white hoodie. The cat on the right has a black patch on their right ear and is wearing a black and white jacket.

Fairy Tale 13 – The Wishing Dildo Series #4 with billie rain17 Jun 201700:59:37

Writing Alchemy Fairy Tale 13 Summary

In the fourth segment of The Wishing Dildo Series, the adventure continues as we find out more about the mysterious and regal Jewel. Then the six companions take a secret detour to the Kingdom of Waterfalls. This story is followed by a discussion about trauma in which I talk about myth, reality, resilience, healing, and community with artist, activist, disabled survivor iconoclast billie rain. This discussion goes deep places, but it also has a lot of laughter too.

The Wishing Dildo Part 1: It is said that the Wishing Dildo can grant any wish relating to sexuality or fertility, as long as that wish is consensual. Prince Hart sure hopes that is true as he and his friend, trickster Tala, embark on a quest for it. As they travel, they soon discover that sometimes the greatest adventure is the people you meet along the way.

Writing Alchemy Interlude 1 Summary

In this romance-themed interlude episode, Yolanda Wallace reads from her contemporary lesbian romance 21 Questions, in which Kenya Davis meets bartender Simone Bailey for the first time. Then we delve into themes, representation, and inspiration in Yolanda’s writing.

21 Questions: Kenya Davis’s ability to find the perfect employee is unparalleled. Her ability to find the perfect mate? Not so much. After she takes a chance on speed dating, she finds herself with not one but two chances to find true love. But with her spotty romantic track record, how can she be sure which woman is Miss Right and which is only Miss Right Now?

Simone Bailey works as a bartender at one of the hottest nightclubs in South Beach, has more female attention than she knows what to do with, and spends her spare time following her musical ambitions. Then she meets Kenya Davis. After her initial attempt to charm her way into Kenya’s heart fails, she resolves to reach her ultimate destination one question at a time.

Fairy Tale 9 – “Dangerous Company” Part 3 with Guest Bex Shea08 Oct 201601:36:12

Writing Alchemy Fairy Tale 9 Summary

Monsters is the theme as sci-fi writer and monster enthusiast Bex Shea joins Fay for the conclusion of “Dangerous Company,” in which Kalla finally discovers that the dragon she has been sent to kill has been disguised as her guide the whole time. The following discussion delves into the question of what monstrousness is, the ways that depictions of monsters can be used to otherize or to empathize, fear, compassion, unknowability, the association of gendered traits with power, gender exploration, and the blurring of the lines between human and monster.

Dangerous Company: The last five dragon slayers died. Kalla is good at solving problems, but her skills will be tested as she embarks on her journey with the very dragon she is expected to kill disguised as her guide. Some interesting surprises are just around the corner…

Fairy Tale 8 – “Dangerous Company” Part 2 with Guest Lara Milton21 Aug 201601:28:58

Writing Alchemy Fairy Tale 8 Summary

Editor and collaborative storyteller Lara Milton joins Fay for the reading of part 2 of “Dangerous Company,” which follows the growing romance between Kalla and the dragon, Har. This section of the story delves into both eroticism as Kalla and Har get closer with each other and into conflict as Har struggles with her own draconic territorialism. The following, delightfully nerdy, discussion focuses on tabletop role playing games as writing inspiration and delves into the some of nitty-gritty details of writing, comparing and contrasting first person and third person perspectives in fiction.

Dangerous Company: The last five dragon slayers died. Kalla is good at solving problems, but her skills will be tested as she embarks on her journey with the very dragon she is expected to kill disguised as her guide. Some interesting surprises are just around the corner…

Fairy Tale 7 – “Dangerous Company” Part 1 with Guest Tobi Hill-Meyer05 Jul 201601:19:55

Writing Alchemy Fairy Tale 7 Summary

Media creator and community-organizer Tobi Hill-Meyer joins Fay for the reading of part 1 of “Dangerous Company,” which begins with an angry gender-switching dragon and the woman the townsfolk have hired to kill her. However Kalla the problem-solver is not what either the townsfolk or dragon expect. The following discussion delves deep into ethical ways for artists to address oppression in their work, the changes I made to this story, and the ways marginalized people are often identified with monsters in stories.

Dangerous Company: The last five dragon slayers died. Kalla is good at solving problems, but her skills will be tested as she embarks on her journey with the very dragon she is expected to kill disguised as her guide. Some interesting surprises are just around the corner…
