JSA #56 (2004)

Welcome to #JSApril! Worst Collection Ever is proud to participate in this celebration of JSA content by delivering our wicked takes on Geoff Johns’s “Black Reign” saga!

This issue plays out more like the first act of a promsing action flick, with Black Adam recruiting a crew of disenchanted, mayhem-seeking folks to help him liberate his home country of Kahndaq. We got the assassin Nemesis, a tatted-up Eclipso, a freshly-mutated Northwind, a conflicted Atom Smasher and Chester Bennington of Linkin Park aka Brainwave aka Robert Englund from the V mini-series. The scene gets bloody and emotional and there are cooling brains all over the place.

We also spend a bit of time parsing out Northwind’s creation so, if you new to the podcast, put a fun movie on for the kids and then hide under a blanket while you listen to this.

All this plus Jen and Shawn buy a bunch of cheap trades, new DC Absolute offerings and the Hawk Tuah Girl runs afoul of the Dark Knight!

[NOTE — we (or specifically Shawn) refers to Northwind a bunch as “Hawkwind.” Hawkwind was a band that Lemmy was in before Motörhead - we are aware of this. We will most likely screw this up again, so there you go]

GUY GARDNER: WARRIOR #0 (1994)

It is our first podcast guest in a LONG time as Shawn's brother -- the mighty Brian Marek -- joins us to talk about pivotal (to Shawn and Brian at least) 90’s comic GUY GARDNER: WARRIOR. It is the Zero Hour issue that reboots Guy as a descendant of a race of peace-keeping aliens who have been traveling the cosmos in a quest to create the perfect, well, warrior. This all gets SUPER body horror pretty quick, with veiny cannon arms and flesh syringes. For the most part, we put this over pretty strongly because the Guy Gardner aesthetic from his era is totally 90s and totally pro wrestling and it’s the best.

All this plus we chat about the Ultimate Warrior’s corpse running amok in the DC Comics offices, Power Girl’s forgotten baby, Guy’s Irish heritage and which foods you should NOT bring to an orgy.

[ONE MORE THING — this podcast was recorded using Streamyard and may eventually come out as video on our YT channel. That being said, the audio does have some aberrations and skips that were unavoidable or skipped over so please bear with us. It was our first time recording the podcast in this format and will need to fine-tuned. Thanks!]

Secret Origins [vol 2] #21 (1987)

Two stories in one today as we first explore the origin of infamous cowboy corpse, Jonah Hex. Twisted curio collector Ian McKellan and hired goon Donal Logue are here to shake down Jonah’s elderly wife for rights to his stuffed corpse but ’92 Jeff Goldblum is here to save the day.

Then later, we learn about the original Black Condor. Starting out as an obese baby, Condor became irradiated by a meteor and learned to fly, going around fighting eagles and stuff. He makes his way to America where he assumes a senator’s identity despite only meeting, like, one other non-bird human in his entire life.

Sensational She-Hulk #26 (1991)

She-Hulk is hired to defend Excalibur's Meggan when Meggan turns into a trash monster and runs amok in a Nando’s. The caveat here is now is that CAPTAIN BRITAIN has now been possessed by trash to the point where he’s just sitting around eating it. Like used wrappers and apple cores and all that. She-Hulk resorts to her feminine wiles and remarkably average-sized feet to save the day.

DC Comics Presents #43 (1982)

Superman is harassed by his co-workers because he opts to have a wistful stare out of a window rather than talk to that yutz Jimmy Olson. He thinks he sees a Sun Eater and he’s correct but gets ambushed by Mongul. Mongul traps Clark in a glass case of emotion so its up to the Legion of Super-Heroes to figure it all out. Cosmic Boy shows up wearing his black Emma Frost corset costume and all is right in the world.

Secret Defenders #15 (1994)

Doctor Strange is stuck in a sanctum beneath the earth’s core and he has no facial hair so he is not equipped to handle his usual Secret Defenders duties. He calls upon general scumbag hero Doctor Druid and his immense Rogaine top-knot to defend the earth against Malachi, the villainess with Wolverine hair and giant hoop earrings. Joining the team is Chicago art museum security guard for hire Luke Cage and Kathy Ireland paramour Deadpool. All the painting and sculptures start coming alive so the situation gets wacky real fast.

Metamorpho: Year One #4 (2008)

We join Rex Mason in his first year as Metamorpho, a being with one leg made of pudding and another made of Miracle Whip. He’s tired of being forced to live in seclusion due to his lack of noise so Simon Stagg gives him a life-like mask and an opportunity to have sex with his daughter. All of this goes sideways and Rex ends up fighting Doc Dread, an opportunistic villain with buxom helicopter pilots and a knack for capitalizing on world disasters.

Then Samhain (the goat man, not Danzig and friends) shows up to possess teenager extras from HALLOWEEN III and cause some havoc. All this because Captain America decided to cheap out on a housewarming gift.

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #32 (2024)

It is the continuation of the Eclipso/Word’s Finest arc as the crap really hits the fan because both Superman AND Batman have been Eclipsified! The Watchtower is in pieces, Red Tornado’s all screwed up and the rest of the Justice League is trapped in a purple jewel in the middle of the Sahara.

And the worst thing is that Eclipso now has Batman’s dark web password and wants Superman to use the Earth’s satellites as a pickleball court. Will Green Arrow verbally berate Green Lantern into freeing them from their purple prison? Will the Spectre face significant self-esteem issues? Will Robin literally have to BREAK HIS NECK in order to bring Batman back to reality? Maybe? Probably?!?

In this issue, space Hulk ruins the NYC sewer infrastructure via his careless burrowing. Also, Blade’s brother makes an appearance and an elderly man is brutally sedated. And much like most 70s romance comics, this one’s a lark of a story about a girl whose mother can’t stop plucking away her boyfriends. You see, Mom’s 36 but she’s still a looker and can get crunk with the kids of today and their Lil Jon. Things come to a head when the daughter meets Neil Brazzers, a corny AF dude who is angling for a quadruple with Mom, Daughter and 70s Stan Lee.

In this issue, Cap fights a literal who’s who of jabroni villains including Batroc, Stilt-Man, the previously dead Ringer, Man-Ape, Man-BULL and maybe even Man-Puss. Cap gets creepy with MODAM and shows off his muscular taint. Meanwhile, Falcon and Shang-Chi split an Orange Julius because LADY MALL~!

We also have Communist Moondragon and KGBeast teaming up to shakedown Lucius Fox over a piece of the Wayne Enterprises pie. Non-compliance follows and we get a chemical plant explosion which Robin is overwhelmed by. Also, Harvey Bullock takes a steel drum to the face.

Iron Man #64 (1973)

Iron Man participates in Detroit’s urban renewal initiative as he shoulderblocks down decrepit buildings. He is ambushed by Doctor Spectrum and defeats him handily with the entire inventory of a Spencer’s Gifts. Later, while in the middle of cuckolding Happy Hogan, Tony is surprised yet again, this time by a grey monster with telepathic powers. After destroying his new girlfriend’s health food store, Tony seemingly defeats the monster only for it to transform into a giant scimitar.

Infinite Crisis Special: Villains United #1 (2006)

All of the big heroes are off dealing with the Infinite Crisis so now is as good as time as any for Lex Luthor to get the band back together and rule the world with a Secret Society of Super-Villains. Lex starts off strong by intimidating prison wardens into releasing their meta-human inmates but then it kind of goes off the rails with Toyman spiking the prison chowder with rage sauce and the heroes getting the upper hand. Thankfully for us, in the middle of all this, Talia pours hot coffee on Doctor Light’s crotch because Doctor Light is a bonafide piece of garbage.

Marvel Premiere #28 (1976)

In the most unexpected of occurrences, the sole survivor of a prehistoric race returns from interplanetary exile to lay claim to Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, dropping a huge mountain in the middle of the street. Ghost Rider was going to hit up a Westerns matinee at the New Beverly but now he has to deal with this. Concurrently in LA, Morbius keeps trying to snack on noted werewolf Jack Russell and happens upon this mountain business. Justice League of America #106 (1973)

Red Tornado gets so trashed that he gets bounced over to Earth-One and gets a new face from a blind man in the mountains. He shows up to help the JLA and Batman’s like “you can help us but you still suck.” Superman, meanwhile, can’t wait to burn a hole in Reddy’s head. In an ironic twist, Superman’s violent tendencies prove to be helpful in thwarting T.O. Morrow’s plan to kill the Justice League.

Avengers #185 (1979)

Wanda and Pietro go back home to Transylvania to find out if they really were the children of 1940s superheroes as opposed to being a militant mutant’s kids that he left to be raised by the High Evolutionary and a bovine woman. In the middle of the night, a medieval pick-up artist negs Wanda into taking a trip up the Swiss Alps. Pietro freaks out, tells a lonely old man to shove breakfast up his ass and jobs out to a forcefield. Elsewhere, Iron Man regales Ms. Marvel about his dipping sauce empire while Beast has three-way sex (probably).

Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen #1 (1954) / Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen #2 (1954)

Jimmy Olson, Superman’s dumbest Earth friend (I don’t know - he might have a Kryptonian equivalent), continues to ruin Superman and Clark Kent’s lives. 

In the first story, Jimmy handles a to-do list for Superman while he’s out saving folks in Switzerland. Instead of, you know, getting pets out of trees, Jimmy opts to mediate a labor dispute using shadow puppets and cheap wigs.

In the second story, Jimmy bodies an interplanetary potion and dreams that he can fly. He uses these powers to join the circus only to tragically drown in front of thousands. RIP Jimmy Olsen.

WildC.A.T.s Annual #1 (2000)

We finally got around to messing with a WildC.A.T.s book on the show and its smack dab in the middle of their jabroni period where the original team died and angry cyborgs ran amok. In this (I guess) annual, Grifter’s brother Condition Red returns from the dead only to get returned to dust by Grifter himself. Its not all that exciting but thankfully we spend a considerable amount of time with Ladytron, the ornery cyborg who breaks off arms in arm-wrestling contests like Jeff Goldblum in THE FLY. Warblade is there to back here up in the subsequent bar fight but we don’t get to see it because it’s more important to dwell on dead/undead sibling brother relations.

In the past, OMAC was just a singular dude with an intense mohawk that got his gimmick from a space satellite. In the FUTURE (now), you can make OMACs in bulk by injecting teenage street junkies with OMAC-rich gruel and hope for the best. After an EMP, only one OMAC remains - Kevin Costner’s son Mike - who rebels against the Brother Eye by crashing into the Nevada desert and stealing cigarettes from a traveling caravan of strippers.

The Twelve #5 (2008)

THE TWELVE is about a group of thawed-out superheroes from the 40s waking up in 2008 to find that there are still NO FLYING CARS! I hear ya man. The one dressed like a Musketeer gets a network TV deal to host a variety show while the Hourman clone is gotten to by high school kids and flies around crying in his surprisingly revealing outfit. Finally, the cover star - the Witness - watches a Nazi get hit by a bus. There's a decent premise going on here; trust us.

She can’t stop inadvertently killing those around her so she gets committed to a sanitarium (welcome home) run by a cannibal Tobias Funke. Tobias eats a dude’s neck so Cassie bolts and ruins the lives of a local sheriff and his son.

Fighting against the status quo are the Outcasts, comprised of Ricardo Montalban, a blue zombie, albino Kane and cyborg Sloth from THE GOONIES. Also, some dude gets impaled by a skateboard.

Thunderstrike and Luke Cage team up to track down a former college basketball standout-turned-bison monster into the bowels of a barbershop where a rouge S.H.I.E.L.D. operative whips out his Mandroid. We’ve also got some phone-related action as Luke uses the phone inside of a renovated porno theatre while Mephisto (maybe?) has an extremely moist conversation with a henchman. On top of all that, Thunderstrike becomes roommates with a Celestial murderess who has never seen the original STAR WARS!

Hourman #8 (1999)

DC decided that after a few random JLA appearances that the new android Hourman was hip enough to get his own series. It was a dubious call to some but adding Snapper Carr as a human tether is not going to help you in the long run. In this issue, Hourman isn’t even there so we’re stuck with jabroni-ass Snapper bargaining with demons over cheesecake, making ketchup pentagrams and generally just sitting in a swamp of his own sweat.

POISON ELVES was a super-indie cult comic about, well, elves that like to dress up like ninjas and seek vengeance against other elves and maybe some humans. 

In this particular issue, Lusiphur the Assassin Elf drops some serious ultra-violence on a warehouse full of villains (?) that may or may not have killed his father and caused his mother to get gangrene in her foot.

Starjammers [vol 2] #5 (2005)

STARJAMMERS are a group of Marvel space pirates, one of which is Cyclops’s dad. Since that would be interesting, he doesn’t appear in this book. We do get in its place the tale of a young military cadet disillusioned with what he’s been fighting for as the government raids a planet of Groots to use their seeds for drug snacks.

JLA Classified #6 (2006)

Booster Gold screws around in Doctor Fate’s tower and accidentally sends a bunch of JLAers and himself to Hell. Instead of being melted and tortured by the Spinner of Lies, fast food franchise owner Etrigan approaches them with the option to work at his burger joint and avoid demon slaughter. 

Meanwhile, back on non-Hell Earth (but really, what’s the difference), Power Girl and Guy Gardner get snippy with each other and devise a plan to save their friends. We never get to that plan but we do witness Guy offering to lick Power Girl’s whole face like Rick James in the club.

Jon Sable, Freelance #16 (1984)

Jon Sable (possibly a distant relative of Silver Sable) is a hitman-for-hire that specializes in Godkiller firearms and having sex with jewel thieves in Frank Lloyd Wright-designed homes. He’s such a good freelance hitman that he built a physical representation of HOGAN’S ALLEY on the NES in his own home. 

In this particular issue, Jon and Maggie The Jewel Thief rescue the formula for Coca-Cola from a group of nerds and shoot the leader to death with foot-long bullets.

It’s the Superboy Holiday Special!!! Starring….Superboy! Clark’s Sweet Plaid Winter Overcoat! Pollution! Earth-39 Apocalyptic Children Wearing Basketball Shorts and Brandishing Spears! Christmas Cuckolding! And from Peaches & Herb…Herb!

Superboy has this friend, Bash Bashford, and Bash is pretty sour over the holiday. So, like any normal teenager, Superboy wraps his friend up mummy-style in his cape and travels to a different earth to prove that Christmas means something to everyone, only to put his friend in immediate danger. Turns out Earth-39 is a Mad Max reality where holidays, clean air and law enforcement don’t exist. Whoops.

The Next #1 (2006)

THE NEXT is DC’s stab at a mid-80s low budget teenage movie premise about gnarly dudes and dudettes screwing with the space-time continuum, presented thru the filter of 1999 MTV Spring Break but released in the mid-2000s. The aforementioned teenagers and their translucent dog show up in our timeline, cause a young woman to get hit by a bus, only to be revived by a group of dead presidents. There’s also an unrelated space-time rip that Superman goes full Mr. Miyagi on while Metron watches because if you’re looking to launch your hip new heroes, its best to have the laziest member of the New Gods on board. 

There’s also a spot in here where character actor Luis Guzman received the Tongan Death Grip.

Oh man, time for some Dark Horse comics! In this offering, an alien in a dope-looking outfit appears out of nowhere in a military base located in Cinnabar Flats, Nevada. “Cinnabar” makes us think of cinnamon which is appropriate because our alien guy (Vortex the Heretic) encounters opposition in the form of space spartans carrying electric Eggo waffles. When it's all said and done, a big bubble of lethal toothpaste envelopes the base while our alien antihero makes a brave Army lieutenant his “space secretary.”
