A CHINESE GHOST STORY & GHOSTWATCH: Episode 186: Ghosts!
This episode we are talking ghosts with A CHINESE GHOST STORY from Hong Hong & GHOSTWATCH from the UK. We loved both these films and each has moments that are really scary!
From IMDb: A debt collector has no other choice than to spend the night in a haunted temple, where he encounters a female ghost, whom he falls in love with. To save her soul he must work with a monk to defeat the tree demon who owns her spirit.
From IMDb: In a "live" broadcast on Halloween night, a BBC team investigate a reported poltergeist in an ordinary London home.
Next time we are looking at "Weird Horror" films with THE LAIR OF THE WHITE WORM & TOGETHER.
Thanks for all your support of the show! You can now support us on Patreon or through Buzzsprout.
This episode Mac and I look at two vintage films featuring witches.
We viewed VIY from Russia and SEASON OF THE WITCH (1972).
From IMDb: A young priest is ordered to preside over the wake of witch in a small old wooden church of a remote village. This means spending three nights alone with the corpse with only his faith to protect him.
From IMDb: A neglected, unhappy suburban housewife gets mixed up in witchcraft with unexpected consequences.
We enjoyed on of these films and were flat-out flummoxed by the other. Have you seen these films? What did you think?
Thanks for all your support and downloads. Welcome to new WoHos!
This week filmmaker and friend Stefan MacDonald-Labelle stopped by to have a ramble with me about one of my favorite horror films, WE ARE STILL HERE.
From IMDb: In the cold, wintery fields of New England, a lonely old house wakes up every thirty years - and demands a sacrifice.
Next up on the podcast we have a couple bonus shows. Quinn and I discuss the Otto Preminger joint, BUNNY LAKE IS MISSING and then Chrissy Champagne returns to discuss DO NOT GO TO SLEEP, a truly bonkers film from 1982.
On the main show, Mac and I discuss GRAFTED from New Zealand and THE SUBSTANCE from the US.
Thank you for all your support. It means the World of Horror™ to us, truly!
Remember we love you and especially this week, WoHos, DON'T go into the basement!
WoHos! This week, The Original Friend of the Show™, Quinn McLaughlin stopped by to talk with me about Hitchcock's REBECCA, from 1940.
This is a bit of a Foundational World of Horror™ AND a It Means the World of Horror to Me mashup as 1. It is old and 2. We love it a lot.
We talk about the plot, the characters, and especially, Jasper, the dog.
We hope you will listen and enjoy!
Next up, I am working on another Foundational World of Horror™ show about THE HAUNTING from 1963 and Mac and I will be looking at early Creature Features on the next main show.
Thanks for all your support, WoHos! Please tell all your friends about us.
This week we were thrilled to welcome Ryan McDuffie & Tim Aslin from Dismembering Horror to the show to talk about two movies that Mean the World of Horror™ to them: ALIEN & CARNIVAL OF SOULS.
We had a very nice chat and we hope you enjoy it and then immediately go subscribe to their podcast and download and consume their entire catalogue.
Coming up soon: The Return of Quinn™ who will join me to discuss REBECCA, THE HAUNTING World of Foundational Horror™, and Mac & I will be back soon to discuss YOKAI: 100 MONSTERS & THE CREEPING FLESH on the main show.
In November, we have returning Friends of the Show™ Devin Dimattia to discuss HAXAN with me and Martin Harries & Boaz Dicks from Film vs. Film podcast to discuss LAST NIGHT IN SOHO with the Whole Squad™ (Mac, Quinn and me).
Next month marks two years Mac & I have been podcasting. What started as a way for us to keep in touch during Covid (as well as spread our love of international horror) has grown in so many surprising and amazing ways. Thank you, WoHos, for all your continued support. It means the world of horror to us, truly.
Please tell a friend or two about us and keep spreading the love!
This week we looked at two portraits of obsession: Annie Wilkes from MISERY and I Geum-ja from Lady Vengeance.
There are a couple of similarities between these two films I never noticed until now. The celebrity that springs up around each woman is one and the other one...has to do with feet.
Contents of the Content: Mom & Mac Chat: Mac's playing Slime Rancher to mitigate late summer slog, Entry-level cats vs. Mac's cat, Mom's walking with Dennis Lehane, we wonder who will stop Ryan Murphy? Watching BARBARIAN (I don't spoil it) with a non-horror fan was not the best call on my part.
Mac talks MISERY
Mom talks LADY VENGEANCE
We got Letterboxd reviews, we got trivia, we got "What phobia is THAT"? and of course our patented The Questions™ feature. You're welcome!
Coming up: Mac's pick of "Early creature features that have interesting applications"? I am not sure I got that right, but he has chosen CREEPING FLESH from the US and 100 MONSTERS from Japan.
My genre pick is "Based on a true story" horror films and I have chosen SNOWTOWN (which I swore I would never watch again, but here we are) and SACRAMENT from the US.
We have a couple of upcoming guests we are very excited about: Filmmakers and darned nice people, Tim Aslin and Ryan McDuffie from "Dismembering Horror" will join us in October & some returning friends, Martin and Boaz from "Film vs. Film" will join us in November for It Means the World of Horror to Me™ picks!
Quinn has also agreed to help me out with a Foundational World of Horror™ pick: REBECCA from 1940. I have to work on my George Sanders impression!
One note: We switched platforms and some of our more raucous laughter is muted. Not sure why. Techie WoHos, Get in touch!
This week, Mac chose two movies that really demonstrate the idea that adolescence is hell: HELLBENDER from the US & RAW / GRAVE from France.
Both involve 16-year-old women who learn truths about their true nature. Good people get hurt. It's a whole thing.
Contents of the content Mom & Mac Chat: Mac has job interviews, Mom gets REAL vaccinated, and Five Guys doesn't care about your nut allergy.
Mac's Watches from August: One-Piece / dishonorable mention: ALLEGORIA Mom's Watches from August: CARNIVAL OF SOULS, PREY, THE INNOCENTS / Dishonorable Mention: THEY / THEM Mom's Shoutouts: Film vs. Film podcast with Comfort Films Podcast (Stephen King adaptations), Your Mother Ate My Dog podcast, singer Madds Buckley
Mom talks RAW
Mac talks HELLBENDER
Some questions remain, of course. How do you think lying to your kid is a good thing? If all your friends ate a rabbit kidney, would you eat one, too? How problematic is the portrayal of Justine's gay roommate? Out of Mom & Mac, which host shares a birthday month and year with Toby Poser?
Coming up: Mom's Picks--A Woman Obsessed movies: MISERY from the US and SYMPATHY for LADY VENGEANCE from South Korea Mac's Picks--60's / 70's Creature Features--THE CREEPING FLESH from the UK & 100 MONSTERS from Japan
Apologies to Theo Germaine, who uses they / them pronouns. I kept calling them him.

This is part two of our Alien Invasion! Episodes. Part One (Episode 81) covered INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, from 1956 & 1978.
BEFORE WE VANISH is a 2017 Science Fiction/Horror film from Kiyoshi Kurosawa. It involves three aliens who are on a reconnaissance mission to steal "conceptions" from humans ahead of a planned invasion and annhiliation mission.
No Mom & Mac chat for this one, but we do get into a discussion of love and TikTok.
Please tell a friend or two about us and come back for Episode 83, when we cover Coming of Age Horror films with RAW from France and HELLBENDER from the US. Later this month, we will also cover A WOMAN OBSESSED movies with Misery from the US and SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE from South Korea.
Mac is moving this weekend, so we are pushing our Alien Invasion movies to next week.
This time in the WORLD OF FOUNDATIONAL HORROR™ series, I am looking at two insane killers--John from HATCHET FOR THE HONEYMOON and Freddie from THE COLLECTOR.
HATCHET FOR THE HONEYMOON was a Spanish/Italian collabo that is short on plot and character but long on style and I think is a whole lot of fun.
THE COLLECTOR is an adaptation of John Fowles's novel and features two really strong performances in Terence Stamp and Samantha Eggars.
I'm back in school and would like to do at least one of these episodes a month. If you have any suggestions, as ever, please get in touch! I am also working to line up guests for our It Means the World of Horror to Me™ series. If you would like to have a conversation about your favorite or fond of horror film, please drop us a line.
This week we got real lupine with it and looked at AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON & DOG SOLDIERS.
We also talk about: job hunting, exercising, blonde labs taking a break in the middle of the road, summer break being over, social anxiety disorder, stress, drawing, and appearing on a friend's twitch stream (twitch.tv/ohheyitsdevin).
Some questions remain: How many times in one episode can we use the word "viscera"? Does AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON hold up? Just how bad is toxic masculinity?
Our favorite watches for July are: Mac: NOPE & RRR Mom: RRR, THE NORTHMAN, MAD GOD and PYEWACKET (honorable mention)
Tangents include talk about NOPE (spoiler free) and how we wish Nicole Kidman would cease and desist.
Rough time stamps: 22:26: Mom's rant on Nicole Kidman AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON DOG SOLDIERS
Next time we are looking at Alien Invasion movies. We will be reviewing INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (1956 & 1978) & BEFORE WE VANISH, from Japan.

This week Mac's genre pick is Witches! We looked at the directorial debuts of two masters and their masterpieces: Mario Bava's BLACK SUNDAY and Robert Eggers' THE WITCH.
Content preview: Mac is househunting, and Mom is trying to squeeze the most enjoyment out of her summer unstructured time before she goes back into the classroom in a few weeks. We both cater A LOT to our cats, Branwen and Rosey.
Mac's Picks for June: Reanimator, The Hollowman Mom's picks for June: Night of the Hunter, The Midnight Meat Train, Tetsuo: The Iron Man Mom's Shout Outs: Drag Mitch to Hell (Mom was on the Season 3 opener) & Cronenberg Or Cats (Mac will appear on 7/23 to discuss A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE at NIGHT & Mom will appear on 9/10 to discuss CAT PEOPLE 1942)!
Mom enjoyed BLACK SUNDAY more than Mac, but that might be because she did more research to fill in the blanks of the script. Mac likes THE WITCH more than he did on previous watches, but Mom's opinion remains the same.
Some questions remain: Do either of these films have a happy ending? Who's worse: Dr. Kruvajan or William? How serious are Mac's viewers on that whole green card marriage thing?
Next time it's Mom's pick and I have chosen Nature Horror. We will look at BACKCOUNTRY from Canada & LAKE PLACID from the US.
Listen, WoHos! We love you! DON'T go into the basement!

We had such a good time with our Feel Good Fall Films that we decided to do two more: PARANORMAN & TURNING RED, two modern classics of animation.
PARANORMAN: A misunderstood boy takes on ghosts, zombies and grown-ups to save his town from a centuries-old curse.
TURNING RED: A thirteen-year-old girl named Mei Lee is torn between staying her mother's dutiful daughter and the changes of adolescence. And as if the challenges were not enough, whenever she gets overly excited Mei transforms into a giant red panda.
Coming up on the Bonus show: Stefan and I discuss one of my favorite films, WE ARE STILL HEREC and hrissy Champagne from RESIDUE joins us to discuss DON'T GO TO SLEEP, a made-for-TV movie from 1982.
On the main show, Mac & I will discuss GRAFTED from New Zealand & THE SUBSTANCE from the US.
Remember, WoHos, We Love You and DON'T go into the basement!
It was Mom's pick of Possession this week and we looked at METAMORPHOSIS from Korea & POSSESSOR from Canada!
METAMORPHOSIS metamorphosizes into a bit of a mess after a certain very handsome Uncle Priest (Sung Woo-bae) shows up, but before that, there is some beautiful imagery and disturbing emotional family drama. Magnificent performances, kickass set design, and some haunting moments are featured here. Notice I didn't mention writing.
POSSESSOR is a science fiction horror film whose story involves an assassin who takes over select unfortunates so she can carry out her missions. Excellent acting, terrific practical effects, and some wackadoo one-liners from Eddie (Raoul Bhaneja) make this movie custom-made for Mom, but how does Mac feel about it?
Content preview: In Mom and Mac Chat we discuss living how to deal with the stress of living in late-stage capitalism as our republic slouches toward fascism, how long is too long for a social visit when you have social anxiety disorder and what is the perfect speed to select for audio books and podcasts.
Thank you for listening this week. Your support means The World of Horror™ to us, truly! Please consider giving up some positive thumbs or stars on your preferred listening platform and sharing this podcast with a friend.
Please get in touch on social media or at worldofhorror96@gmail.com!

This is part two of our Whole Squad Pod 1960-isode edition of the show. In part one, we looked at Alfred Hitchcock's PSYCHO. In this episode, we look at LES YEUX SAN VISAGE / EYES WITHOUT A FACE and PEEPING TOM.
These films have everything: Daddy issues, childhood trauma, death by German Shepherd, death by tripod, random dance breaks, nosy neighbors and masks.
Coming up in our It Means the World of Horror to Me™ series, The Lynchisode with our friends and super WoHos, Lindley and River. We will be looking at FIRE: WALK WITH ME & MULHOLLAND DR.
Next on the main, it's Mom's picks of Possession and we will look at POSSESSOR & METAMORPHOSIS.
This week it is Mac's Picks of Killer movies with ICHI THE KILLER (2001) from Japan and HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER (1986) from the US.
ICHI THE KILLER (2001): A sadomasochistic yakuza enforcer comes across a repressed and psychotic killer who may be able to inflict levels of pain the enforcer can only dream about.
HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER (1986): Henry (Michael Rooker) is released from prison following his mother's murder. He supplements his job as an exterminator with a series of indiscriminate and violent murders. Fellow jailbird and drug dealer Otis (Tom Towles) becomes a willing accomplice in Henry's bloody killings. But as the depravity escalates and Henry forms a bond with Otis' sister, Becky (Tracy Arnold), things start to get out of hand. The film is based on the true-life story of serial killer Henry Lee Lucas.
WoHos, we pose it to you: Is it a good movie if you have to read the book / manga before you watch the movie? Weigh in!
Mac's favorite watches from May: EMMA (2020) & AS THE GODS WILL ( 2014)
Mom's fave watches from May: INTO THE MOUTH OF MADNESS (1994) & EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE (2022).
We got the whole squad together to talk about three heavy hitters from 1960: PSYCHO, LES YEUX SAN VISAGE / EYES WITHOUT A FACE, and PEEPING TOM. We talked A LOT, so this Bonus will be in two pieces.
This is Part One of two, wherein Quinn breaks down Hitchcock's classic proto-slasher, PSYCHO. Stay tuned for Part Two coming out real soon.
This movie has everything: Mommy issues, primitive psychoanalysis, paternalism, transphobia, and ableism at their best, but they tried (?)
We also have Letterboxd reviews and trivia!
We're all super thirsty for Anthony Perkins and grossed out by Hitchcock's coprophilia, but we are here for the glory that is Patricia Hitchcock!!
This week I looked at two Foundational films about identity.
DR. JECKYLL AND SISTER HYDE is a 1971 British horror film directed by Roy Ward Baker based on the 1886 novella Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. The film was made by British studio Hammer Film Productions and was their third adaptation of the story after The Ugly Duckling and The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll. The film is notable for showing Jekyll transform into a female Hyde; it also incorporates into the plot aspects of the historical Jack the Ripper and Burke and Hare cases.
DEAD RINGERS is a 1988 psychological thriller film starring Jeremy Irons in a dual role as identical twin gynecologists. David Cronenberg directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Norman Snider. Their script was based on the lives of Stewart and Cyril Marcus and on the novel Twins by Bari Wood and Jack Geasland, a "highly fictionalized" version of the Marcuses' story.
The film won numerous honors, including for Irons' performance, and 10 Genie Awards, notably Best Motion Picture. Toronto International Film Festival critics have ranked it among the Top 10 Canadian Films of All Time.
Some questions remain: How central to your identity is your gender? Which is the worse decision: taking female hormones to extend one's life or becoming addicted to pills in order to save your brother Who's right about Mr. Cronenberg's film: Your humble host or David Cronenberg, himself?
Philosophy Corner™ makes its first appearance on the podcast. I just couldn't stop thinking about identity.
Coming up: Whole Squad Pod™ (Mac, Quinn and me on three kickass films from 1960: LES YEUX SAN VISAGE / EYES WITHOUT A FACE, PEEPING TOM & PSYCHO.
Mac's Picks: Killers genre with ICHI THE KILLER & HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER
It Means the World of Horror to Me™ the (rescheduled) Lynchisode with FIRE, WALK WITH ME & MULHOLLAND DR.
Mom's Picks: Possession genre with POSSESSOR & METAMORPHOSIS.
This week Cat Sole, from the Kill the Cat Podcast joined us for an interview and to discuss her It Means the World of Horror to Me™ Pick, CORALINE.
Our guest this week is Cat Sole. She is a filmmaker, screenplay consultant, script editor, WoHo and co-host of the amazing film and screenwriting podcast, “Kill the Cat”.
Some questions remain. Is there anything more scary than a flying cockroach? How traumatizing is this movie, anyway? What animation syle is the scariest to you? Why is Mac so weirded out by Kesha's song "Don't Stop"?
Cat Mentioned the Beyond the Screenplay Podcast. Here's a link to Michael Tucker's Anchor Page Beyond the Screenplay on Spotify Beyond the Screenplay on Apple Podcasts
Cat also mentioned Creating Character Arcs by KM Weiland, which is avails on Scribd (downloading and saving now)

Mom's pick was Creepy Kids. We looked at ORPHAN from the US and GOODNIGHT MOMMY / ICH SEH, ICH SEH from Austria. As per, spoilers abound including the two big "twists" in these two flicks.
We enjoyed (some of) the performances in ORPHAN, but really hated the way the husband was drawn.
We enjoyed GOODNIGHT, MOMMY so much more!
Give both a (re) view and have a listen!
Mom & Mac Chat Content/Preview: Mac's water is turned off today (on recording day), talking to those you disagree with, orthodox religious types, Mac's beef with cis men who complain about wearing masks, religious hypocrites. Spoiler: we solve it in this segment.
ORPHAN Content Preview: Stillbirth, nightmare scenes with hospital imagery, gaslighting, Peter Sarsgarding-it-up, children in jeopardy, friendless adult women, Margo Martindale's talent being wasted, sexualization of children.
GOODNIGHT MOMMY Content Preview: Torture of a mom at the hands of her kid (s). We look at various interpretations of the story and images. What do you think? Get in touch, WoHos!

It's a special It Means the World of Horror to Me episode!
Original Friend of the ShowTM, Quinn was nice enough to come by with one of her favorite horror films: ROSEMARY'S BABY from 1968. We spoil the hell out of it, as per, so if you don't want it spoiled, have a watch or rewatch before you listen.
We are both such fans of the cinematography, the performances, the suspense and creep factors built on a toxic marriage, and the already tenuous proposition of pregnancy! What say you, is pregnancy magical or is it horrifying?
Some other topics covered: The Pollening that occurs this time of year in NC, Sidney Blackmer's connection to our home state, smoking on the Dick Cavett show, dream sequences, ovulation cycles, the abandonment of the Hays Code, and who is the obvious winner of the YOU FOOL award for ROSEMARY's BABY.
Coming up next on the main is Creepy Kid films. We will cover THE ORPHAN from the US and GOODNIGHT, MOMMY, which I almost could not finish the first time I watched it!

Sometimes you have to break your own rules, you know what I mean? While we usually pair an international horror film with an American one, this week, we looked at two American films. We tried not to swear, but that was a fool's errand!
We reviewed THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS & K-POP DEMON HUNTERS. KPDH was new to us, but we revisited NIGHTMARE, which is an old favorite for us both.
Next time we will be looking at MORE Feel Good Fall Films with TURNING RED & PARANORMAN.
Thank you for all your support. It means the World of Horror™ to us, truly!
This week we are covering Mac's picks for Animal Attack movies: TREMORS from the US & BOAR from Australia. They couldn't have been paired better as they both deal with small communities out in the sticks coming together to fight nasty beasties.
In Mom & Mac chat, we recount a funny story when Mac asked me if he could use the "C" word. When he was eight!
We uncover some big truths about the nature of words and gender.
We also get a little spiritual about it when it looked like we had a third person (?) in on our call.
Mom is super giggly on this one for some reason. She also tries to make a heartfelt address to Mr. Kevin Bacon (Friend of the ShowTM).
This week we talked practical effects, sausage parties, paranoia, isolation, childhood sleepovers, bro-ing out and how damn good looking Kurt Russell is in this movie.
We had Martin and Boaz on from the wonderful Film vs. Film podcast in the second part of our Crossover Extravaganza 2022. For the first part, go check out their episode on Vampire Films from April 8, 2022. It was a blast!
Martin's invitation inspired us to create this spinoff bonus series with other podcast people and friends to discuss their favorite horror films. Coming up we have discussions on the David Lynch films, FIRE WALK WITH ME, MULHOLLAND DRIVE and the Tim Burton animated classic, CORALINE.
We had a little audio bleed on this one, but on the upside, I found a nice little app called Type Studio, which looks like it will make editing faster and will provide a fairly serviceable transcript, to boot. Here that is: https://app.typestudio.co/share/Oizc8PDleGPbz5F2FIFt
Please get in touch with your thoughts on THE THING and on your favorite horror flicks. Also please stay tuned for our main episodes on Animal Attack horror films, BOAR & TREMORS and Creepy Kids movies, THE ORPHAN & GOODNIGHT, MOMMY coming up in the next few weeks.
WoHos! Your support means the World of Horror to us, truly. If you like what we are doing, please spread the word about the pod.

SUMMARY What do you call this genre of horror? Supernatural teens? Puberty pandemonium? Menarche Mayhem (at least in one case)? Parent's (REALLY) Just Don't Understand?
We learn this week that (A) you sure 'nuff can't keep 'em down on the farm and (B) when that "old time" religion is cast aside in favor of the oldest of religions, things get a little crazy in the best possible way!
We discuss THELMA from Norway and CARRIE (1976) from the US.
SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS If you would like to participate in a podcast ad swap, please get in touch! We promote your podcast and you promote World of Horror on yours!
Some very exciting guests are coming up. Stay tuned! Would YOU like to guest with us? Please get in touch. We can talk your favorite (or favorite three) horror movies, foundational international horror movies, the history of horror, the philosophy of horror or what have you. I think I want a dog trainer when we do werewolf films (not kidding) and we're always up for talking to filmmakers, horror story writers, other podcasters, academic types, horror fans and our WoHos!!
Once Mom is finished with Spring semester at the end of this month, some minis will be populating your feed--15-40 minute bonus eps on International Horror Films. Got a favorite? Get in touch.
CONTACT worldofhorror96@gmail.com instagram.com/worldofhorrorpodcast Follow us. Mr. Joachim Trier is!
COMING SOON Later this month, we are going to host Martin Harries and Boaz Dicks from Film vs Film Podcast to talk about THE THING. Not international, you say? Well, they are English, so it's international to THEM. Don't like that explanation? How about this one: It's okay to break the rules, especially if you make them!
After that, Mac's choice is Animal Attack Films and we will be reunited with our true love (?) John Jarratt when we review BOAR from Australia and TREMORS from the US.
Mom's next genre pick after THAT is Creepy Kids! We will be looking at ORPHAN from the US and GOODNIGHT MOMMY from Germany.
Remember: We love you, WoHos! DON'T go into the basement!!
Mac came to town to have lunch and so we had to record a bonus mini on FRESH, the best advertisement for veganism I have seen lately!
Spoilers abound, so if you haven't seen FRESH yet, I'd encourage you to do so. We'll be here when you get back.
We explore the pretty much successful feminist themes and bemoan some of the less successful intersectional feminist themes in the film.
There's a lot to celebrate here, and we are not just talking about Sebastian Stan's dance break! While it is not a perfect film, it got under our skin and it was lovely to discuss. We hope you will listen and enjoy.
Is Mom's theory about Ann's backstory completely wackadoo? Was Mollie drawn clearly enough for ya? How about that Alex Garland Choreo?
Coming up soon: Mom's picks on Psychological Horror: THELMA from Norway and CARRIE from the US. Mac's picks's on Beast/Animals Attack: BOAR from Australia and TREMORS from the US.
We are really digging this format. Mom also promises some minis later this spring.
We're also looking to pair THE ORPHAN, THE ORPHANAGE and THE BABADOOK. Suggestions welcome!
Listen. We love you. And DON'T go into the basement! --Mom
This week we got real killy with it as we looked at Battle Royale-type films with BATTLE ROYALE (2000) from Japan & THE BELKO EXPERIMENT (2017) from the USA.
Mac did his best to explain BATTLE ROYALE to me and we have feelings about THE BELKO EXPERIEMENT.
Questions abound: Why does the lead have such robust plot armor? (TM--Mac) Why wasn't the cleaning crew local?? Why is there an armory in the building, anyway?
Next time on the main episode we will look at psychological horror with THELMA from Norway and CARRIE (1976) from the US.
In the meantime, I'll be dropping some World of FOUNDATIONAL Horror bonus minis into the feed.
Thank you for all your support and listenage. Yep, that's a word now. --Mom
WoHos! Mom's genre pick this week is Haunted Houses and we looked at THE HOUSE AT THE END OF TIME (2013) from Venezuela 🇻🇪 and BEETLEJUICE (1988) from US.
The portrayal of the husbands in both movies was not great, but we enjoyed them both, anyway.
Biggest takeaway: Catherine O' Hara is our once and future queen!
Next week look for another foundational mini and one our next main episode is Mac's picks of Battle Royale-style splatter films: BATTLE ROYALE & THE BELKO EXPERIMENT.
Please get in touch. We love you! DON'T go into the basement! --Mom
Sorry about the sound in Mom & Mac chat. Someone (Mac) kept hitting the new boom mic.
WoHo's! This mini mini is about Mario Bava's final film, SHOCK, from 1977. I really enjoyed it and hope you'll check it out and let me know what you think!
*Oops! In discussing the famous "boy into a man" famous shot, I said "Bruno". The boy actually turns into Carlo.
Mac helped me kick off this mini project where I'm dipping my toes into the frigid and weird waters of classic international horror.
This time it's David Cronenberg's RABID from 1977.
I celebrate the guy's entire catalogue, but Mac wasn't super keen on this one. We both conclude, though, that this is "a mess" [TM].
Next up, I am looking at SHOCK by Mario Bava and Mac will return on the main as we look at the haunted house classics: THE HOUSE AT THE END OF TIME / LA CASA DEL FIN DE LOS TIEMPOS & BEETLEJUICE. (I may have gotten a little hooked on the soundtrack, as well).
If you have recommendations for other foundational films we should review, please get in touch. I'm reachable at our email and on Instagram. Check out Mac's twitch stream and follow him on twitter. Oh! And I am finally starting to review WoH films on Letterboxd!
Thank you for listening. We love you. DON'T go into the basement!
Mac's genre pick this week was zombies and we watched two zombie comedies: ONE CUT OF THE DEAD from Japan & SHAUN OF THE DEAD from the UK.
Zombies in both films function as a wake up call to our main characters and both films are examples of labors of love. Check them out or check them out again!
We were having so much fun discussing SHAUN OF THE DEAD that we forgot to rate it, but I am going to go out on a limb here and say that Mac would give it 5/5 cricket bats. That makes two 5/5ers this show. You're welcome!
A very happy 52nd birthday to "friend of the show" Simon Pegg.
We have two minis coming up which will serve as the meat in the podcast mains sandwich. That metaphor needs work. What I mean is, before the next main, which will be out in two weeks, Mom and Mac will review David Cronenberg's sophomore effort, RABID and Mom is going solo to cover Mario Bava's SHOCK. This is Mom's pet project to fill in her own gaps in horror knowledge and to, with hope, connect to some academic types to discuss foundational horror. If you are one such type, or you would like to recommend someone, please get in touch!
On the next main, Mom is highlighting Haunted Houses and we will review BEETLEJUICE from the US and THE HOUSE AT THE END OF TIME (2013) from Venezuela.
Thanks so much for all your support, WoHos! We love you.
This week Mac & I discuss two films that are about Trying to Defy Fate. We looked at the South Korean film A DAY/HARU and FINAL DESTINATION: BLOODLINES from the US. A DAY involves trying to escape a tragic time loop, and FINAL DESTINATION: BLOODLINES involves trying to escape death. One of these films is successful.
On the next main show, Mac & I will discuss "Feel Good Fall Films" with THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS & KPOP DEMON HUNTERS.
Coming up, we have a Bonus Show with Chrissy Champagne from RESIDUE: A TRUE CRIME PODCAST, more Feel Good Fall Films, and a show on IN MY SKIN from France & THE SUBSTANCE from the US.
Thank you for all your support! It Means the World of Horror to us, truly!
By the way, if you happen to listen to us on PocketCast or any other app besides Spotify, we'd love it if you left us 5 stars and a review.
WoHos! This is the culmination of our Slasher shows. Our discussion of DREAMHOME is in part 4A. Our discussion of the first four episodes of SLASHER S4 is on episode 3!
We discusss all the insanity and revelations in the back half of season 4 of the Canadian Anthology show SLASHER. We got incest, we got a be-beheading, nods to Game of Thrones, FATAL ATTRACTION and THE ORPHAN and a magic mushroom trip, to boot!
Thanks to Anthony Longo of Horror Bull for the Vannicola connection and congrats to Alex Ozerov (Theo) and Sydney Ozerov-Meyer (Liv) who were married in 2021.
Stay tuned for some minis coming up on classic International Horror. I've been dipping my toes into these waters and it's been an education. If you have any classics (pre 2000) that you love, let me know over social media!
Next time we look at Zombies with ONE CUT OF THE DEAD and SHAUN OF THE DEAD.
Welcome, new WoHos! We love you! DON'T go into the basement!
This week we looked at DREAMHOME from Hong Kong and discovered that zip ties serve a variety of purposes!
This movie takes the housing crisis in Hong Kong in 2007 as the backdrop for a psychotically-driven woman whose only ambition is to own an apartment with a harbor view. The kills are creative, to say the very least, but the third kill does involve a pregnant woman so if discussion of that is too troublesome, please skip that part. The death is discussed from 27:00 ish to 29:00.
Mac had Covid, but he lives to tell the tale and recommends ENCANTO. Mom got real noir with it and recommends NIGHTMARE ALLEY and DETOUR from 1947. She is also enamored with BEFOREIGNERS and SEARCH PARTY...not quite horror, but horror adjacent.
Please come back next time when we discuss the last four eps of S4 SLASHER: FLESH AND BLOOD.
Next up: Mac has chosen Zombies for the next theme and we will look at ONE CUT OF THE DEAD & SHAUN OF THE DEAD.
Mom is also working on a pet project to produce minis based around Vintage (pre 2000) international Horror. Quinn and Mac will guest from time to time!!
We got real stabby with it this week with LAKE BODOM and SLASHER S4 eps 1-4. LAKE BODOM/BODOM is a Finnish 2016 flick that has been on Mom's list for quite awhile. Mac pointed out some real flaws in it, though, and we brainstorm some ways to improve it. Our consulting fee is very reasonable and we are very available, any filmmakers out there who want to remake it!
If Mom is the biggest fan of THE WAILING, Mac may be the biggest fan of SLASHER, the Canadian anthology series. We review the first half of the fourth season and it is full of lots of batshit family drama and guts. Lots of guts.
We love hearing from you, WoHos! If you like what we are doing, please tell a friend.
Content notes: In Mom and Mac Chat we talk all kinds of COVID business as Mom ventures back into the classroom for Spring semester. Everything should be fine, though, right?? I mean, what could possibly go wrong? We also mildly spoil THE MEDIUM (Mom can't stop talking about it!) Also, WOLF CREEK, but you've already listened to our episode on that one, so, you're good! (S1, ep. 5: Australia, Fair Dinkum!)
This week we got together with our sweet friend, Quinn, to talk about what movies (and a TV show and a bootleg of a musical) we enjoyed watching in 2021. We also discuss some that we thought were pure trash.
Notes: We covered LAST ONES OUT way back in Season 1, ep 8. We covered SUSPIRIA, 2018 in Season 3, episode 5.
I never did remember the second movie I had thought of for Quinn's fifth pick. Shrug emoji. There are only 5, not 6 seasons of iZombie.
Content note: in the Mom & Mac & Quinn chat we discuss: cheese week, not loving this time of year, whether or not time is a flat circle, whether or not to make resolutions and hugging trees.
Quinn's Picks THE YOUNG POPE, THE SUMMER OF SOUL, LAST NIGHT IN SOHO, SAINT MAUD and PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE Mac's Picks SPACE SWEEPERS, CANDYMAN 1992 & 2021, THE MATRIX, SPONTANEOUS, A BOOTLEG OF WAITRESS, THE MUSICAL Mom's Picks THE MEDIUM, RELIC, POSSESSOR, CENSOR, WE ARE STILL HERE
We all did not enjoy PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN.
Other films discussed: LICORICE PIZZA, COME TRUE, MALIGNANT, MIDNIGHT MASS, GIRLS 5EVA, SUCCESSION, HOST, TENEBRAE, POWER OF THE DOG and TOMORROW WAR.
See if you can spot the trends in our picks. Hint: One of us had religious-themed content, one of us had trans-related content and one of us had some sick psychological twisty-turny stuff.
Next time on the main episode, Mac and I will look at Season 4 of SLASHER, FLESH & BLOOD, episodes 1 - 4 and LAKE BODOM, from Finland.
Please get in touch with your fave fives from last year and what you are looking at
This week we looked at the French home/mom invasion classic, INSIDE, and the 2008 American cult favorite, THE STRANGERS. We also speak pretty briefly about the sequel, as Mom only liked one scene.
Please get in touch with your favorite Home Invasion flicks! What's scarier: a really specific motive or no motive at all? What is the limit of references you can make to other films to still be original? What references did we miss?
Don't forget to check out our episodes on THE RING (Season 1, ep. 7) and FUNNY GAMES (Season2, ep.1)!
We'd also love to shout you out on the podcast. Let us know who you are and where we are. We'd love to say hi!
Next time our theme is slashers and we are going to watch Season 4, Eps 1-4 of SLASHER from Canada and LAKE BODOM/BODOM from Finland. Next next time we are going to watch Season 4, Eps 5-8 of SLASHER and DREAMHOME, from Hong Kong.

Mom and Mac Chat :53 Home Invasion genre, in general 16:30 Mom Talks INSIDE 23:17 Mac talks THE STRANGERS 111:42 We briefly talk THE STRANGERS: PREY AT NIGHT 132: 10.
This season we are going to explore various genres and sub-genres of horror and pair an international film with one from the US.
Mom chose two "animals attack" films this week: THE POOL from Thailand and CRAWL from the US.
Trigger warning for pet death in THE POOL.
Though both strain credulity, one of them at least seemed to have some kind of deeper meaning. The other made up rules on the fly for how alligators behave.
We chat, look back on our first year of podcasting (YAY!) and look forward to covering Home Invasion movies and Slasher flicks later this month!!
Thanks to our guests this year: Aaron Dimattia, Andy Dimattia, Devin Dimattia, Tiffany Albright, Karen Rontowski and Stefan MacDonald-Labelle!
If you would like to guest (or just chat), please get in touch! https://linktr.ee/WorldofHorror
Also stay tuned for a World of Horror Discord and some sweet sweet merch!
Next week, we are exploring "home invasion" movies with INSIDE (À l'intérieur) from 2007 and THE STRANGERS from 2008 (and if I can talk Mac into it, The Strangers: Prey at Night from 2018).
Another film mentioned, and partially spoiled, in this podcast: BLACK WATER (discussed in S1: Ep. 5 Australia: Fair Dinkum! )
Mr. H's review of CRAWL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRQQ13EmfnU&t=7s
00:40 Mom & Mac Chat 11:13 Fave movies from last month: (Mac: Re-watch of GET OUT, THE MEDIUM, SUPERHOST/Mom: CARDINALS & re-watch of THE MEDIUM) 16:30 It's been a year 23:00 What we are doing this season 25:18 Mac talks THE POOL 100:06: Mom talks CRAWL
Stefan is back to guide us through the Canadian horror landscape as we discuss Anything for Jackson! Were the ghosts absolutely necessary? Why can't actors who read Latin remember that V's are W's? Exactly how foolhardy is it to play with the Dark Arts?
We don't really answer these questions, but we have a good time and we hope you will, too!
Here's that article about the makeup in Anything For Jackson I was telling you about: https://www.fangoria.com/original/monster-anatomy-anything-for-jackson/
Join us next time for the kickoff to Season 4. We love you! DON'T go into the basement!! --Mom
This week we have a special guest on the podcast, filmmaker and podcaster (and now, friend of the show), Stefan MacDonald-Labelle! He is an actual Canadian man and he brought us two really great Canadian films: SIEGE & ANYTHING FOR JACKSON. We had such a great time that we had to split the shows into two pieces. This is part one wherein we discuss the Canuxploitation classic, SIEGE. It's wild, you guys.
Mac and Quinn joined me to welcome Stefan and get real northern with it.
Tangents include: How nice are Canadians, really? Is liking musicals like the cilantro gene? When Meg Ryan went against type and turned in her "sweetheart" card, those things we need our own personal trigger warnings for, what Mark Duplass' facial expressions say about him, Tom Nardini's racist profile pic on IMDb. (Judge for yourself: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0621365/), Canada's wild home renovations, a specifically Canadian form of toxic masculinity and more.
Stefan's podcast is "Drag Mitch to Hell". Please check it out. Stefan's website is https://www.terminalburrower.com/ Please do likewise.
This week for the final regular episode of S3, we looked at the 2011 Canadian found footage cult classic, GRAVE ENCOUNTERS and the 2018 Korean modern variation on a theme, GONJIAM: HAUNTED ASYLUM.
We also discuss favorite movies from October, Uhh Yeah Dude, Mom's zoomie cat, Rosey, and how gosh darned nice it is to record together in the same room!!
Join us next week for a spotlight on Canada, as we welcome filmmaker, podcaster and all-around nice fellow, Stefan MacDonald-LaBelle, to discuss SIEGE (1983) & ANYTHING FOR JACKSON (2020).
Thanks so much for all your support! We are closing in on one year of podcasting and we are really enjoying this. We are looking to do more pairings like we did this week between an American (or in this case Canadian), film and an International film. If you have any bright ideas on that score or on anything else, please get in touch! https://linktr.ee/WorldofHorror
This week we looked at the Thai horror comedy 13 BELOVED/13: GAME OF DEATH and the American remake 13 SINS.
Content notes: In Mac and Mom chat we talk about making art, Mom's supportive bf and autumn in North Carolina. In the main, we make casual references to capitalism, toxic masculinity, lazy writing and offensive portrayals of intellectually disabled people, per usual, and refer to THE SQUID GAME, ALICE IN BORDERLAND, DOPESICK and MAYHEM.
Here's that Thai Insurance commercial I was telling you about:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6CSQvdfTKY
Join us in two weeks for the final episode of Season 3 where we look the Hong Kong/Singaporean THE EYE and the American remake, THE EYE.
We love you so much! Don't go into the basement! --Mom
This week we looked at two films related to home invasion: SLEEP TIGHT from Spain and SEE FOR ME from Canada/US.
Mom remembered SLEEP TIGHT very differently than her first watch 14 years ago. We had similar thoughts about SEE FOR ME.
Our naxt main show will be about Trying to Defy Fate with A DAY (HA-RU) from South Korea and FINAL DESTINATION: BLOODLINES from the US.
After that, we will have a coule "Feel Good Fall" shows with THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS & K-POP DEMON HUNTERS and then TURNING RED & PARANORMAN. We hope you will tune in and enjoy!!
Thank you for all your support. It Means the World of Horror ™ to us, truly.
Remember, WoHos! We love you and DON'T go into the basement!
In honor of the season, we thought we might highlight two "not so scary" Halloween movies. Quinn's pick is ARSENIC & OLD LACE and I chose, E.T. THE EXTRATERRESTRIAL.
We also were so lucky to have the chance to interview the organizer and founder of the Queer Fear Film Festival. You can contact Tiffany at: tiffany-albright.com instagram.com/tiffany.a.albright
Join us on the main episode next week for Episode 9 where we will look at 13 BELOVED from Thailand and 13 SINS from the US. Our final episode of Season 3 will feature THE EYE,the original and the remake, from the U.S.
This week Mac and I looked at the 1958 classic B movie, THE FLY, and the masterpiece that is the 1986 update, THE FLY.
Other topics discussed: Mac has a triumph at work, Mom may be teaching a psychopath (but she's cool with it) and the disturbing wealth of flies in the 50's. Also very minor spoilers for THE SQUID GAME, COME TRUE, SWEETHEART & THE GREEN INFERNO.
Coming soon (next week)! a Quinnisode on "Not So Scary Halloween Movies" and (in a week and a half or so) Mac and I will review 13 BELOVED (2006) from Thailand and 13 SINS (2014).
Would you like to guest on World of Horror? Email us at worldofhorror96@gmail.com or DM us (Mom) at worldofhorrorpodcast on Instagram.
This week we watched the 1997 Satoshi Kon psychological thriller, PERFECT BLUE and the 2010 Darren Aronofsky knock off, BLACK SWAN.
Both films concern a young artist who has a psychological break as she is trying to navigate the professional and creative pressures she faces.
We thought PERFECT BLUE had a clearer vision than BLACK SWAN, but at least one of us would watch BLACK SWAN again.
Hey. You know how podcasters often ask for ratings, subscriptions and reviews? We don't typically do that, but we are trying to grow WoHo nation, so to that end I have created a fill-in-the-blanks review form at the bottom. Choose the words and phrases that match your sentiments and cut and paste your completed form into the podcast platform of your choosing, won't you?
In two weeks Mac and I are back with the 1958 Vincent Price classic, THE FLY and the 1986 Jeff Goldblum classic, THE FLY. At some point this month we hope to have the interview we alluded to in the show as well as a Quinnisode with "not too scary" Halloween movies featuring ARSENIC AND OLD LACE and E.T. (It was only a matter of time).
We love you. DON'T go into the basement.
