WFP with Dawn Thomson16 Apr 202500:42:36

This episode is with Dawn Thomson, a long time friend to Tribe Porty, as she was one of the original TEDxPortobello speakers in 2015.

Dawn is an energy psychologist and relationships coach. Dawn’s work focuses on love, sex, and self. Helping people navigate relationships with others and themselves, especially when they feel stuck in dynamics that no longer work.

Dawn is super fired up about her new work called Fancy Yourself– where she encourages people to start loving and fancying themselves more both physically and emotionally (accepting and valuing themselves) as well as having the confidence to back themselves to get the life they want (self-belief).

In this episode, we speak about relationships; how to have better ones, when to leave some and why we all should develop a deep love for a relationship with ourselves.

A gentle heads-up, this conversation includes discussions about sex and teh mention of sexual trauma.

Find more about Dawn at dawnthomson.com.

Working For Progress with Reema Vadoliya23 Apr 202400:36:51

Our conversation with Reema Vadoliya is a rerecord, after some sound issues. I was a little nervous about it sounding rehearsed but actually we got into some rich conversation quicker as a result. We think you will enjoy hearing Reema's story.

Reema is a passionate business founder, gifted storyteller and tireless advocate for inclusion in data. By challenging audiences to reshape their perception of data as a dreary necessity, she draws out the real human stories which organically empower intentional inclusion in data and beyond.

After seven years and multiple roles in data, Reema decided to launch her new, trailblazing company, People of Data. Through this organisation she seeks to create a world in which data can be used as a springboard for understanding the real people that data represents.

Reema is confident speaking about data strategy, analytical exploration, data collection and governance. Her talks offer a passionate manifesto for a world in which Equality, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging (EDIB) are the beating heart of all data handling and usage.

An experienced speaker not afraid of digging into the gristle of the difficult topics, Reema’s talks push beyond a 1D (one demographic) view of data and offer a refreshing, multi-dimensional consideration of how humanised data can pioneer a brighter future.

Working For Progress with Peter Jones17 Jan 202400:29:30

Joining us today is artist Peter Jones. Peter has had a studio based in Tribe for many years now and works mainly in watercolour.  It was great to speak with Peter today and learn more about him.

Peter’s interests include buildings and place and has published a series of books that celebrate the built environments of Kirkcudbright, Portobello, Falkland, and most recently Craigmillar & Niddrie.

Through funding from creative scotland, Peter recently collaborated with Craigmillar Art Club to launch a book and an exhibition as part of Art Walk Porty. Facilitating workshops formed a part of this project and workshops have now become a key element of his creative practice, with a series of sketching workshops at the National Museum of Scotland with Bipolar Edinburgh now into its second run. Everyone can draw, and coming together in a group can add to the wellbeing benefits of this mindful activity.

Peter is a quiet, calm and lovely man and we very much appreciated this conversation. You can find more about Peter and his work on his website and instagram.

Working For Progress with Chris Hellawell08 Dec 202300:23:55

Welcome to Season 2! Today we welcome Chris Hellawell.

Chris and I met at the School for Social Entrepreneurs Scotland programme, way back in 2014 when we were both setting up our enterprises. Now Chris has a tool library empire and has a workshop at Tribe Porty.

Chris Hellawell is the Director of the Edinburgh Tool Library, an organisation that aims to create resilient communities by harnessing the wealth of resources that already exists within those communities.  This includes tools, equipment, space, volunteers, skills and knowledge.  They share tools and equipment via tool lending libraries, and teach skills to their members and outreach groups of people who have historically been excluded from workshop and creative spaces.  Since their beginnings in 2015, ETL have saved their members over £2million and supported over 100 community groups and charities through their outreach programmes.

Working For Progress Season 1 Wrap Up28 Sep 202300:25:14

We have recorded 11 episodes and a trailer, learned how to edited, uploaded and share. High 5 team WFP!

Alice and I have enjoyed the conversations so much. I think in the logistics of starting a podcast, I had forgotten why I wanted to do it in the first place. I love love love good conversation. It is the life blood for me. The more vulnerable, the better (I would like to delve a bit deeper in season 2).

What things stand out for us from season 1?

Let’s talk about our trailer. A bit cringe to watch back but also, we started out pretty good. True to what we find important and our community.

I have to admit that I haven’t listened back to an entire episode yet…but that’s your job, right Alice? Well, actually I was listening to one the other day and my son quickly made fun of me and said I must love myself to listen to my own podcast… can’t win. It was the first time I had listened back.

We had great chats with Bob, Lorna, Osbert, Nasim, Kaigan, Rob, Adam, Jo, Rachel, Inessa and Dane.

Each one brought their unique story to the conversation, a bit of where they have come from in terms of significant life moments which have impacted on what they are doing today. Thinking back, it was often a person or an interaction which profoundly impacted a decision or direction. Sometimes only with hindsight do you notice such influences.

Common threads- community, values and doing good work.

Most of all, it makes me so very grateful for the communities of Tribe Porty and Keystone. I have met the most incredible people through these communities. And by no means is that just a line. I mean it. It has been the gift of a lifetime. From our beginnings of Tribe Porty through TEDxPortobello, the people that have entered my life through these spaces are brilliant. From kick ass women leaders, to the biggest hearted men and fathers; kind humans of the best kind.

We hope you enjoyed it too. Now on to Season 2

Working For Progress with Inessa Rezanova14 Jul 202300:28:27

When Inessa Rezanova became a Tribe Porty member, it felt like she had always been there. Inessa is a Ukrainian writer, creating and producing stories for more than 15 years now. Inessa started out as a TV screenwriter, doing a lot of documentaries, TV shows, and TV series, and then transitioned to writing and producing narratives for a mobile game developing company. Regardless of the industry, she stays committed to storytelling because she believes there is always a place and time for a good story.

Whenever not pumping out pages of concepts, drafts, and scenes or creating characters, she tries to see as much of Scotland as possible these days. She's always open to new recommendations, so feel free to drop her a message with your favourite places to see!

Working For Progress with Rachel Mays13 Jun 202300:29:47

We had a lovely conversation about the joys of freelancing and understanding your value with Rachel Mays. Rachel is a freelance consultant servicing clients across the UK, Europe and USA.

Rachel  began her career in Portland, Oregon at the creative agency Wieden and Kennedy where she was a student in their experimental creative agency, WK12.

Rachel went on to work across the Nike and Procter & Gamble accounts and then joined Wieden and Kennedy Amsterdam in 2011 to design and run the new business department where she stayed for 8 years.

Today she lives in Edinburgh and is a freelance consultant servicing clients across the UK, Europe and USA. Her offer is two fold: Working with creative agencies to prioritise new business. And working with brand marketers to run effective agency selection processes. When she's not working she's thinking about her local river Esk, out hiking, scrolling auction sites, laboring in the garden, or on her bike.

You can find Rachel through LinkedIn.

Working For Progress with Joanna Craven06 Jun 202300:24:53

Jo Craven has been a member at Tribe Porty (whenever living in this country) and also a Keystone Women alumni.

Jo's freelance career started ten years ago with a (thrilling) part-time job translating German phone battery descriptions into English. Four years later, she started freelancing full-time designing games for training and engagement, including river basin games for adults and beans games for children. Since then she has added on other bits and pieces including teaching maths for the Open University, running game design courses, massage therapy, massage clinic admin and training hundreds of hops plants a day up wires (my pandemic career). Outside of her paid work, Jo loves piano, gardening and kayaking in Portobello.

Adam McGibbon31 May 202300:35:28

Adam is a long standing Tribe Porty member and it was great to speak with him today about what he does. Adam is an early starter and an environmental campaigner and strategist with a deep passion to win. But the catch is that he wants to win for the good of the planet and people.

Previously Adam has worked managing election campaigns for climate friendly politicians. He currently works with Oil Change International on a campaign to end the flow of money from major governments to fossil fuel projects.

Adam is currently working with Oil Change International on a campaign to end the flow of money from major governments to fossil fuel projects. And with quite a bit of success, with 39 countries and governments pledging to take action, and billions shifted to clean energy instead  - it came out of a successful campaign he ran to get the UK Government to stop using billions of taxpayers money to finance fossil fuels overseas, from 2017-20

Adam also ran the UK branch of the environmental organisation Market Forces for two years, focusing on banks rather than governments.  Before that, he worked as an election campaigns manager for climate-friendly politicians, and before before that, Adam was a student activist in Belfast, Northern Ireland.  He was one of the leaders of the 2010 university tuition fee protests in Northern Ireland and managed to get a fee rise stopped, saving students around £1 billion by 2020.

Introducing Working For Progress26 Apr 202300:23:57

Dani Trudeau and Alice Hudson introduce themselves and the reason why they started Working For Progress.

Alice interviews Dani about why she set up Tribe Porty, a community coworking space in Edinburgh and how that led to the launch of Keystone, a community for women looking to reimagine their working life.

There is much love for both communities and also around how we are all working for progress for ourselves, for others and for this world.

This podcast is for anyone who has ever worked, ever wondered where their place is and  everyone who wants to feel like they belong or have had the privilege to find their place and do the things that make them feel most alive and connected.

Osbert Lancaster and Realise Earth18 Apr 202300:36:27

We spoke with  Osbert Lancaster, co-founder and director of Realise Earth. Realise Earth actively helps managers and directors develop and lead sustainability initiatives and help to reconnect people to nature.

Realise Earth is here to help directors or managers with a responsibility for sustainability lead successful sustainability initiatives and has established successful sustainability initiatives that make a difference. Realise Earth has found that successful initiatives are always led by people that have a purpose-centred mindset: people who don’t ask “why should we do sustainability” but “how can we do sustainability?”.

We had a great conversation around value based work and how we can live our beliefs through our work.

Working For Progress with Danni Gordon31 Jul 202400:39:09

On this episode of Working For Progress we welcome Danni Gordon. Danni loves to help and has an organised work style, she self confesses “I love to help people get shit done”.  She originally worked in the third sector, managing creative funds to community organisations around Scotland. Danni has also worked as a personal assistant and is the founder of the Chachi Power Project. Currently, Danni is on extended maternity leave and is looking forward to the next chapter in her working life, alongside being a mother.

In this conversation, we dove into the delicate balance between productivity and parenting, exploring the internal conflicts and the excitement of returning to work in roles that support work-life balance. Danni and I share candid anecdotes about the struggle for recognition in demanding jobs and reflect on the significance of feeling valued in the workplace. This discussion underscores the essential need for supportive environments that respect both professional and personal commitments, making for a great conversation.

Working For Progress with Ellie Morag24 May 202400:30:53

Ellie is a photographer, community gatherer and newest member of team tribe. Most of her working life has revolved around connecting with people.  Ellie’s connection to the creative scene lead her to CreativeMornings, where she volunteered with the Edinburgh Chapter for a number of years before starting her own event, called Soapbox, last year. Knowing how much being part of a community helped both her personal and professional life was the driving factor in starting Soapbox. Bringing other people together and helping them with their own journey is something that brings Ellie a lot of joy.
