Do you ever find yourself telling a friend or colleague that you’re “so busy” whenever they ask how you’re doing? Or, that you “have a lot on your plate and hardly have any time for yourself”? These are common answers to the question: “ how are you doing?”. Perhaps you see it as an easy response that doesn’t need much explanation. Or, it could be that you’re in disbelief at the end of the week, wondering where all that time went. The reality is that time is precious and waits for no man. Yet, many of us unconsciously squander time away; but when that realization kicks in, it’s often too late, or you have little time left to spare. And, the end result of what you were going to accomplish either gets short-changed or fails altogether. Think about the time when you had to be up early for an important meeting at work; yet, the night before you were up late binge-watching a TV series. You ended up waking up late the next morning and had to rush to work, leaving you flustered and not well prepared for the meeting. Did you really have to watch those TV series late into the night? Or could you have used that time for an early rest? Or, what about that time you had a deadline to meet, and you spent every night that week working late to complete the project. Did you really have to spend every night working late at the office? Or could you have prioritized your time better and gotten the project done during your typical work hours? I’m sure we’re all guilty of not spending our time wisely at some point in our lives. If magically, 2 extra hours appeared in your day, what would you do in that time? If you had to dedicate that time solely to you? I posed this question multiple times this week, with little to no response. A few years ago I moved from Wollongong back to Central West NSW. I rented a duplex, had a good job, a gym membership and routinely saw my friends and family. My belief at the time, was that the life I was living was "good", a life a lot of people strived for. I went to university straight out of school, got good grades, a good job and I was climbing that corporate ladder. I went to the gym, ate relatively well, socialised with my friends and routinely caught up with my family. Sounds great, doesn't it? The problem with this story, with this life I was living, is it didn't align with my values (if you're unsure what your values are, go to https://www.kateastill.com/values to download my FREE guide). Upon reflection, this was a life society considered "good". For me, it felt dull, routine and mundane. If I valued security or consistency, I might have felt different. However, I value adventure and spontaneity. To thrive, I need flexibility in my schedule to flow with what inspires me and lights me up. Values matter because you’re likely to feel better if you’re living according to your values and to feel worse if you don’t. This applies both to day-to-day decisions and to larger life choices. Everybody is different, and what makes one person happy may leave another person feeling anxious or disconnected. Defining your personal values and then living by them can help you to feel more fulfilled and to make choices that make you happy, even if they don’t make sense to other people. Your values, after all, are simply the things that are important to you in life, so it should be natural to live by them. And yet so many of us don’t consistently live by our values.
