Ep.38 This is Why You’re So Resistant to Healing04 Dec 202400:35:30

Healing can feel scary, and it’s definitely not easy. It’s a long process, but it’s one that will truly set you free and allow you to be your authentic self.

Today, Carla is discussing one of the biggest challenges on the healing journey: resistance.

Healing isn’t a straightforward path, and resistance can show up in so many different ways.

Carla is probably one of the most resistant people to healing, so she fully understands why you might be too.

But ultimately, if you’re looking to experience more love, more joy, more pleasure, more play, and a more abundant life, you need to break through this resistance in order to heal.

Ep. 21 Breaking Free from the Grip of Exercise Addiction24 Jul 202400:26:33

Movement can be so good for the body, but at what point are you doing more harm than good when it comes to exercising?

You might not even be aware of this, but you could have an exercise addiction.

I know that if someone had tried to tell me in my 20s that I had an exercise addiction, I wouldn’t have listened to them. But I’m so glad that, with the help of therapy, I was able to acknowledge this addiction and break free from it.

Exercise is so so good for your body and mind, but this doesn’t mean that you should be pushing through sickness, grief, or canceling plans in order to get a session in.

In this episode, I talk about the 8 signs of exercise addiction, my personal experience with it, and ways that you can overcome it and cultivate more self-love.

Ep. 20 How Can I Trust My Body when it’s Attracted to F*ckboys!?17 Jul 202400:30:50

I truly believe that your body holds all the answers to your questions. It’s your wisest guide. But we’ve forgotten how to listen to it’s signals.

I also believe that making choices and taking action purely based on thought, is a major contributor to the intense suffering we see today e.g. record levels of anxiety, obesity and addiction.

But what a lot of women can’t make sense of, is how can their body be their wisest guide, if it’s signaling attraction to f*ckboys?

The key to understanding the messages of wisdom communicated to us by our bodies, is to learn the difference between how a wise message feels, and how a trauma response feels - where our inner child gets triggered and needs soothing.

This episode covers:

  • Holidays in France and putting down more solid roots in London
  • My ongoing frustration at heterosexual men for their lack of enthusiasm to use condoms
  • How the patriarchy has really benefited from woman being disconnected from our intuition
  • How to know the difference between wisdom from your body vs being triggered by trauma (with examples)
  • My experience of learning to distinguish between my inner child asking for love vs recognising the intuitive whispers of the soul
  • The importance of forgiving yourself for being human

I currently have a limited number of spaces available to work with me 1:1 online. I support you in the feeling part of your healing journey. Talk therapy is powerful, but often being disconnected from our body and breath holds us back.

I work with you to help you listen to what your body is telling you, what is being revealed in psychosomatics. I curate breathwork and movement practices, bespoke to you, to guide you to move through emotions and symptoms.

Reach out to learn more!

Ep. 19 Addicted to Addiction09 May 202400:44:31

This was an extremely hard episode to record. It focuses on my experience of being in a relationship with a heroin addict. How it unfolded and how it changed me.

I hope it helps because I know there are so many women out there with someone in their lives who is struggling with addiction.

In this episode:

  • Entering the relationship despite knowing he was likely to use again
  • Why I was drawn to trying to "save" him
  • The nature of our relationship and what it was like
  • The moment things became clear and I decided to leave
  • How the experience impacted me and what I learnt
  • How society is conditioned to turn a blind eye to addictions
  • How therapy and healing helps us recognise our own repeated patterns quicker

My retreat is just around the corner, 7-9th June, in the magical lands Donegal. If you're craving rest or feeling stuck in life, join us to pause, recharge and reflect.

I'd love to hear any feedback and thoughts on this episode! Please DM me on Instagram or drop a mail to wiseyourselfuppod@gmail.com.

Ep. 18 Breathwork: The Body's Innate Ability to Heal with Steven Ebbers10 Apr 202400:53:11

One thing Steven often feels is misunderstood about breathwork is that it’s not about the breathing. Rather the breathe is an entry point into your inner world. It allows you figure out what’s alive for you, what’s true, what’s real. And that the same concept applies to other healing modalities too.

Steven is a London based Breathwork Facilitator who helps people feel safe enough to re-establish their relationship with themselves, others and the world around us through breathwork and somatic therapy. He has a background in Clinical Psychology, is an accredited Coach and is currently training as a Cranio-Sacral therapist.

Expect to hear about:

  • The evolutionary factors behind men’s lack of engagement in therapy
  • Steven’s background in psychology, experience of talk therapy and ultimately finding the biggest benefit in somatics
  • How healing modalities are just a route inwards to figure out what is alive for you
  • Defining breathwork and it’s different types: functional vs therapeutic
  • What Cranio-Sacral Therapy is and how it works
  • Why is it that we can accept certain things we do not understand, e.g. WiFi technology, but have doubts about others? E.g. the body’s innate ability to heal
  • The reality of struggling as a learning practitioner. Frustration and resistance to surrendering. Learning to trust the process

As always, I adore receiving your DMs. Pop me over your thoughts, feedback and questions. @carlamcgreevy1 on Instagram.

Ep. 16 Exploring the Power of Psychedelics: My Experience with DMT and Ayahuasca20 Mar 202400:39:10

Here’s my story of how I went from being super anti-drugs to having two very profound experiences with two different psychedelics: DMT and ayahuasca.

This episode is a very vulnerable share because the topic of psychedelics creates a lot of debate. My intention is just to be completely honest about my experience and share what I went through.

Information and education is power. I want to share to highlight what psychedelics can offer.

Expect to hear about:

  • What DMT and Ayahuasca are, when and where they’re used and who by
  • Beginning to question my conditioning around drugs growing up and getting curious
  • The importance therapy and other healing tools played in preparing me for a psychedelic experience
  • What taking each medicine was actually like and the impact each had on me
  • The importance of respecting the heritage of the medicine. Ethics and cultural appropriation
  • My frustration at governments and the value of informing ourselves and coming to our own decisions and opinions

Breathwork is a tool to connect you to your body, which is the source of your power and healing. It is through breathwork and healing that you can become the most magnetic, boldest version of yourself, which I am here to support you in.

Ep. 15 Unlocking the Universe and Healing My Inner Child: A Psychedelic Breathwork Experience13 Mar 202400:33:41

I haven’t always been obsessed with breathwork. I used to be the biggest skeptic. I was allergic to sitting still and couldn’t stand the idea of meditation. This episode is an insight into how I discovered breathwork and my most profound experience to date. Being exposed to these practices has changed my life for the better which is why I choose to bring them into the lives of women now.

Breathwork is the most transformational tool for healing, health and connection to self. You have the same magic in you as plants. There is a theory DMT is activate through conscious breathing which explains why people can have psychedelic experiences.

In the episode:

  • Being prescribed yoga and meditation by my therapist to reconnect to my body and treat Complex PTSD
  • The struggle to meditate and feeling awful
  • Learning to breathe and the profound benefits it brought, both physically and mentally
  • Discovering rhythmic breathwork during my YTT in Bali
  • The situationship that lead me to ocean breathwork (conscious breathing)
  • Different types of breathwork

Ep. 14 Destigmatising Menstruation: How Katrina McDonnell Changed the Law to Support Women and People with Periods06 Mar 202400:47:14

This week I have Katrina McDonnell on the pod in honour of International Women’s Day. Katrina is the founder of Menstruation Matters: a non-profit organisation doing amazing work to improve access to period products, support young people through education and destigmatise your bleed.

They run period empowerment workshops, distribute free products to those that need them and successfully lobbied the government to change law in 2022. What a powerhouse of a woman!

Katrina feels strongly that many of us have a lot of unlearning to do to reconnect with our bodies. The patriachy does not want us to connect to our bodies. When we understand ourselves, we can advocate for what we need and that gives us power - which the patriachy wants to hold over us. She is passionate about helping girls and women tap into their cycles because we’ve been disempowered for too long.

In this episode:

  • Katrina’s background and her first taste of activism at university in Liverpool
  • How Menstruation Matters campaigned and changed law in March 2022 to make free period products mandatory in all public buildings in Northern Ireland
  • Dealing with judgement as a result of the taboo, stigma and awkwardness that still exists around Menstruation
  • Shifting attitudes towards talking about periods after being conditioned to be embarrassed about them for generations
  • Katrina’s personal growth as a result of following her passion, her advice for women and what’s next for the organisation

Upcoming Events:

Fundraiser in light of International Women’s Day TONIGHT at 7pm to support Menstruation Matters. It’s called ‘Amplify Your Voice’ and it’s all about empowering you to speak your authentic truth. Please consider attending to support both yourself, and a worthy cause! Book here

Ocean Breathwork session with Tension Release Therapy A really beautiful movement practice followed by a powerful breathwork practice to help you regulate your nervous system and clear the pathway to abundance of self love. Book here

Next week I’ll be talking about my experience with ayahuasca and how I became obsessed with breathwork. Please do all the usual bits and bobs to support the podcast, especially share with a friend. It makes a big difference!

DM me if there’s anything you’d love for me to talk about. I love hearing from you all. This community gives me so much joy. Have a wonderful International Women's Day, chat to you next week.

Ep. 13 The Dating Scene: My Thoughts on Being Single, Dating and Finding Love at 3628 Feb 202400:33:51

This is a juicy one. Lauren (my podcast manager) felt that my Valentine’s episode didn’t cover enough of the dirt so here it is: dating in your 30s, casual sex, dating apps, paying for the first date etc. Strap yourselves in.

Only one things for certain regarding dating and navigating romantic relationships. It is NOT a one size fits all situation. In this podcast, I share my thoughts, feeling and opinions but bear in mind, what makes me happy in a relationship could be your worst nightmare.

  • Have dating apps had their moment? Are they still useful to actually meet your significant other today?
  • Dating apps have a success rate of 20%. Would you use a laundry detergent that only worked 20% of the time?
  • Would you marry for money? or for the lifestyle a man could provide you?
  • Should the man pay on a first date or should the cost be split 50-50?
  • Is casual sex harmless or harmful? When is casual sex not ok?
  • How do you actually meet your future partner/wife/husband?
  • What are your non-negotiables when you’re dating?
  • Do you have sex on the first date?
  • How much independence do you require in a relationship?
  • Do you know what you want in your future partner? Do you have clear green flags and red flags?

LET US KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS. We’re all different. Different strokes for different folks. Email wiseyourselfuppod@gmail.com or send me a DM on Instagram.

I’m running a very special workshop next week to fundraise for Menstruation Matters in light of International Women’s Day. The workshop is happening next Wednesday 6th March at 6pm via Zoom and is around using your voice. Ep. 11 Ramblings of a Single, 36 year old Woman: the Freezing Your Eggs Saga07 Feb 202400:35:16

I would love to have children some day. I am a single women of 36 years. Pregnancies’ over 40 are considered geriatric. So I’ve began to weigh up my options…

There is SO much conflicting advice, stories, opinions, experiences when it comes to fertility. I firmly believe there’s no correct answer - only the choice that’s right for you. It’s a big decision and a difficult one to make… so I want to start the conversation and share my thoughts.

Expect to hear about:

  • My thoughts and coming to a decision on whether or not to freeze my eggs
  • Some science & stats to understand fertility rates and chance of success with IVF
  • How we are the guinea pigs of contraception. The medical world has historically failed to look after women. Why isn't more being done?
  • The importance of breaking the taboo. No matter what your choice or situation is, speaking about it and sharing your experience will help. Child free, infertile, etc.

I’m running a retreat in the beautiful Donegal this summer. I am so excited for phenomenal food, comfy beds, the smell of the ocean and a tribe of women attending to themselves for the weekend. June 7-9th. Secure your spot before they're gone!

I’d love to hear from you if you’ve any thoughts on fertility or experiences to share based on the decisions you’ve made regarding having children. DM me on Instagram or email wiseyourselfuppod@gmail.com.

Ep. 10 Silenced No More: How Breathwork Held the Key for Robyn to Heal Deep Traumatic Wounds so She Could Believe (and Share) Her Truth31 Jan 202401:15:45

Trigger Warning: Sexual Abuse. Some viewers may find this episode distressing

My first guest, Robyn Dylan, shares her phenomenal story of how breathwork helped her overcome the complex trauma she’d been carrying her whole life. Robyn’s childhood was troubled and when she did muster up the bravery to share her truth, she was silenced.

She spent years in talk therapies, where she felt like she was rehashing the same story without seeing any change. Stumbling upon breathwork gave her access to tap into the innate wisdom of the body to start looking after herself, regulating her nervous system and dealing with her past on a much deeper level - on a somatic rather then intellectual level.

As someone who wasn’t seen or heard, she now feels it’s her duty to see and validate people’s stories. She helps them heal by listening, acknowledging and through breathwork modalities such as Rebirthing, Buteyko, CCB and TRE.

In this episode, Robyn & Carla discuss:

  • Robyn's story. Overcoming a traumatic childhood with the help of breathwork
  • The impact of not being seen, heard or validated
  • An insightful link between the secrecy that usually surrounds abuse in families, and the suffering of the Palestinians
  • Seeking power. The psychology behind why people hurt and traumatise others
  • Robyn's go-to breathwork practises & why she believes in breathing through your nose

If you’d like to connect with or reach to to Robyn, you can check out her website and follow her on Instagram.

Ep. 9 How Speaking My Truth Helped Me Overcome Shame18 Jan 202400:32:13

“Shame cannot survive when spoken and met with empathy” - Brene Brown

Trigger Warning: Sexual Abuse

I’m sharing my experience with you because there’s people that never received the education, help or support to be able to speak their own truth. My hope is for each person to get the chance to speak and be seen, held and supported in their lifetime.

Sometimes when we're not conscious of how much we're suffering or how much keeping something inside is affecting us, we don't know until it's outside of us.

Expect to hear about:

  • Surf life in Bali - What I'm learning as a Beginner
  • What happened to me as a child and how I coped
  • How talk therapy helped me understand the shame I was carrying
  • How everyone experiences shames - and from so many different sources
  • The importance of identifying shame within yourself and how to release it

I NEED YOUR HELP !!!

We’re coming to the end of Season One of Wise Yourself Up. Ep. 8 Healing Childhood Wounds: How Your Trauma Impacts You in Adulthood (Even If You Had A Great Upbringing)10 Jan 202400:36:29

Trigger Warning: Sexual Abuse

Your earliest experiences stay with you. In the past people thought that what children didn’t understand, wouldn’t affect them. Now we know that that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Babies are inherently SELFISH. They will always internalise their experience and make it about them. Which is why we develop core wounds in our childhood… that then show up as our default reactions to situations in adulthood.

In this episode:

  • What somatic therapy is and what it’s about
  • How my therapist implored me to heal my inner child
  • The impact in adulthood of my core wound
  • How EVERYONE has trauma; even if your childhood was great
  • How it impacts you and how you can begin to heal

Today is the last day to join the Wave Effect if you want to work on this stuff in a small safe container. We start tonight at 9pm.

If you want to see a second season of Wise Yourself Up, I really need your help getting this baby (the podcast) to roll onto it’s belly. PLEASE subscribe, share, tell all your mates.

If you’ve any shares on contraception, I’d love to hear for next week’s episode (all anonymous)! DM me on Instagram or email wiseyourselfuppod@gmail.com.

Ep. 7 The Holy Grail of Healing: How to Love Yourself03 Jan 202400:29:16

Every healer I’ve met has said the same thing: self love is the key to it all. If you’re anything like I was a few years ago, you might find that well and good, but are lost when it comes to HOW to love yourself…

…you attend. The highest form of love is to attend to yourself. To be, honour and listen to yourself without judgement. It’s often not easy

In this episode:

  • Pushing myself out of my comfort zone in Bali
  • A recap of my 2023 - which was a mess
  • How sharing our experiences helps to make the process of grief normal
  • Accepting the need to learn to love myself
  • The biggest indication of lack of self love
  • Common examples of a lack of self love
  • First steps to loving yourself
  • The power of healing in community

I've designed a course with everything I know, with all my lived experience, to help women who really want to love themselves more, who really need it. It begins next Wednesday, 10th Jan if you want to join: Wave Effect 2.0

You can get a taste of what it’ll be like by trying my free 3-day mini-course for beginners.

Ep. 6 From Selling Alcohol to Teaching Yoga, Breathwork and Meditation: Why My Career is Devoted to Helping You to be Still27 Dec 202300:34:51

The practices that I teach have changed my life, they saved me. And they’ve saved so many others. I never in a million years thought I would be devoting my life to encouraging people to learn to breathe deeply and to do less and be still. But here we are!

In my opinion, meditation is THE most beneficial skill for self love, connection and health but many of us find it very difficult to learn. The problem is that we can't hear our own inner voice, our own inner desires, our dreams, because the thoughts are so busy. The most beneficial thing for our bodies, for our health is to relax. But most of us don't truly relax.

Expect to hear about:

  • Why I left my marketing job to teach self care practices
  • Why meditation is so difficult for so many of us
  • How 90% of us are breathing poorly and the impact this is having
  • The importance of learning to breathe before learning to meditate
  • Why learning to sit with yourself, to attend to yourself, is the highest form of self love
  • You must love yourself first before you can share that love with anyone else

I have a free 3-day mini-course for beginners! Each session is 7 minutes of movement, 7 minutes of breathwork and 7 minutes of journaling.

Learn to attend to yourself. Join me every day for the month of January. Wave Effect 2.0

Ep. 5 How I Went From Hating Yoga to Embracing its Power to Reduce Symptoms of Complex PTSD23 Dec 202300:29:36

When people experience traumatic events, they disconnect for their body as a tool to survive. In order to heal, you must reconnect to the body when you’re ready and connect to the whole of you. Yoga is a POWERFUL tool to do so.

The word yoga means union. The union of the mind, body and soul. And the research supports the power of yoga to reduce symptoms of PTSD.

In this episode:

  • My travels and very nearly NOT getting into Bali!
  • Why I hated the idea of yoga and how my mindset held me back
  • Being prescribed yoga for Complex PTSD in order to reconnect to my body
  • My best advice for beginners
  • My two favourite teachings from the philosophy of yoga

Ep. 4 Keeping Death Close: My Journey with Grief and Learning How to Cope with Losing Loved Ones06 Dec 202300:40:17

“Grief is eternal because so is love” - Tara Brach

Please note that this is a heavy topic; you may find the content emotionally intense.

Grief is a lifelong journey. When you feel the pain of loss, you feel the closeness you shared with that person; the love you had for them.

Death and grief cut deep scars in all of us when we lose the ones we love. Our capitalist society doesn’t support us in tending to those wounds so I want to share my experience, advice, tools I’ve used and what I’ve learned.

I talk about:

  • The challenge to find space for grief in a fast-paced, capitalist world
  • My journey, the beliefs and practices that have helped me
  • The eternal nature of grief as a testament to the enduring power of love
  • Practical resources to prepare for death and cope with grief

Connecting with the body's innate ability to grieve, love, let go, and restoreShared experiences of grief from my community

Thank you so much to everyone who was open, vulnerable and shared on this topic. Please keep your messages coming in. I love the community we’re building. DM me on Instagram or email wiseyourselfuppod@gmail.com

I’ve created this episode for heterosexual men and woman because I want you all to have great sex. It might be quite triggering for some.

Casual sex and contraception are relatively very new to humans in the grand scheme of things. We are now able to have sex for pleasure, with the option to take measures against STIs and unwanted pregnancies. Yet the statistics show that we are not looking after our sexual health. This episode explores why.

In this episode:

  • The widely researched issue of men not caring about their health
  • The common request from men to women of being asked to not use a condom
  • Understanding and being respectful of the power dynamics at play
  • My personal experiences and the influence that being an unwanted pregnancy has had on my values
  • The impact of our unconscious programming and how sex as changed
  • Relieving the burden on women to carry all the responsibility
