From Boardroom to Babies and Back Again: The Hidden Cost of Unsupported Returns to Work11 Jun 202500:40:36

Returning to work after having a baby is one of the most emotionally charged transitions a woman can face, and it's one that too often goes unsupported. In this powerful episode, I am joined by business psychologist and founder of & Culture Consulting, Clare Radford, to explore the findings from her groundbreaking report, How to Support Returning Parents: From Boardroom to Babies and Back Again.

With insights drawn from nearly 400 personal stories, Clare shines a light on the unseen struggles faced by women returning from maternity leave, and what businesses must do to keep their top talent from quietly slipping away. Together, we dive into the emotional toll, the hidden biases, and the practical steps needed to build a workplace where working parents can thrive.

In this episode, you'll discover:

The emotional and psychological impact of returning to work as a parent

Why ambition doesn't disappear with parenthood, and what organisations are missing

The five game-changing strategies every employer should implement

How self-advocacy can transform a return-to-work experience

The cost to businesses and society of getting this wrong, and the ROI of getting it right

Whether you're a working mum preparing to return to work, an HR leader wanting to improve retention, or someone passionate about creating more humane workplaces, this episode is essential listening.

Your Ideal Week - How to Set Yourself Up For Success Even If You Don't Enjoy Goal Setting11 Jan 202200:20:56

I used to have a guilty secret. That secret is I hate goal setting. I really don't enjoy it. And I rarely do it.
I know it's weird for a coach to admit right?

But having a direction in which you're heading is really powerful - I think we can all probably agree with that.

The old - "if you don't know where you're going you can end up anywhere" - quote.

So for a few years, I beat myself up about not enjoying or wanting to set goals. At times I forced myself to do goal setting but it just felt really inauthentic and incongruent.

And I've got big dreams, hopes and intentions. So how do you create a life you love if you don't set goals??!?

That's what I'm going to be exploring in this episode. I'm going to be sharing an alternative approach if you too don't get fired up about goal setting.

It's based on an exercise I did with my first ever executive coach nearly 20 years ago now and it's no underestimate to say it was life-changing - and I don't use that term lightly as I know it's one that can be thrown around.

This podcast episode is for you if you want to approach 2022 (or anytime if you're not listening when this launches in January) in a way that gives you the freedom to rise above all the noise of new year's resolutions and really focus on what's important to you in your life and work.

If you head to www.wisdomforworkingmums.co.uk/74 you can find a download that goes along with this episode.

Life Lessons From 202129 Dec 202100:27:56

It would be easy to just walk away from this year and close the door on it without looking back, hoping that I never have another year like this again.

But as difficult as it has been, there have been some deeply profound and important lessons that I want to take from this year. And my guess is that it's the same for you too.

If I walked away without reflecting on them I'd lose the goodness in those lessons, and I didn't want to do that.

So come join me in my last podcast of 2021 as I share my life lessons.

You can listen to the episode here: https://wisdomforworkingmums.co.uk/73 or via itunes, stitcher or spotify. Or you can find it on most other podcast platforms and apps.

I hope that they help you reflect on your year too. So we can carry what we need to into 2022 and leave behind what we need to as well.

In this episode I share:

How this year has made me rethink resilience

How I'm focussing on doing less but better

My experience in creating space for just me

How I'm moving from 'powerful effort' to 'effortless power' in 2022 and beyond

I hope you enjoy listening to this episode and it provides you with some useful insights into your own life lessons for 2022.

Wishing you hope, health and happiness for the year ahead.

Daring To Rest In Motherhood07 Dec 202100:48:20

Do you struggle to rest as a working mum?

Do you feel tired but you just feel like you can't step off the hamster wheel of life?

Does your secret fantasy involve going away to a hotel for a weekend *just* to sleep?

Then this podcast episode is for you!

I'm interviewing Karen Brody, a rest teacher and founder of Daring To Rest.  I came across Karen and her work when I was deep in my own burnout journey.  Her book became my bible and was pivotal in me understanding what had led me to burn out and what I could do to take my power back and recover.

Karen is on a mission to support you to experience deep rest by sharing a life-changing, simple, restful transformational nap approach.  Teaching us to slow down and dare to rest.

In this episode Karen shares:

  • How her experience with panic attacks in early in her motherhood journey led her to do this work
  • How we value and protect rest for our children but not for ourselves
  • The rest messages we receive at an early age in our culture
  • How our modern society is set up for us being hyper-aroused and why we need rest more than ever
  • The powerful life direction that rest took her on that led to global success
  • That rest in the remedy for so many things in our lives
  • A life-changing 3-minute rest ritual

The Gift Of Knowing How To Support Your Child With Their Mental Health01 Dec 202100:51:41

As mums there's probably not a week goes by that we don't worry about the wellbeing of our children in some way, shape or form.

But with the pandemic changing the way we live, work and even school, for many children this time has created unsettling changes.  Often leaving us as parents feeling un-resourced in how to support our children.

A survey published by the NHS in September 2021 revealed that children's mental wellbeing had declined from 2017 with now one in six children in England having a probable mental health issue.  Young people with existing mental health problems also reported that lockdown made their life worse.

This has coincided with closures or reduction of key services, including mental health services and youth services.

I don't know about you but at times I've felt like I've needed more support and resources to navigate some of these worries. That's why I'm so excited to introduce you to my guest – Dr Esther Cole

Dr. Cole is Clinical Director & Clinical Psychologist at Lifespan Psychology. She worked in the NHS for 12 years and before starting her own Psychology Practice.

I've had the privilege of working with Esther so was delighted when she wanted to join me on the podcast to help empower us as parents on how to navigate our children's mental health.  Not only in her professional role as a Clinical Psychologist but also as a mother of three children herself.

In this episode we explore:

  • What is children's mental health
  • What are some of themes around children's mental health that Esther is seeing in her practice
  • Some really simple, practical but profound things we can do as parents to support our children with their mental wellbeing
  • Some great resources to help us if we need more support

What if your wardrobe worked as hard as you do? Style that keeps up with your ambition26 May 202500:36:15

In this episode, I'm joined by the brilliant Helen Reynolds an expert image consultant who helps women create wardrobes that are easy, flattering, and aligned with who they are now.

We dive deep into why so many of us feel disconnected from our style after becoming mothers and how reconnecting with it can help us reclaim more than just our clothes.

Whether your wardrobe currently inspires you or drains you, this conversation will help you start seeing style as something more powerful than fashion - it's a reflection of your identity.

When my guests Hannah Hall-Turner and Rachel Maguire were colleagues at the same company and had their babies 6 days apart, they shared their dream to achieve work life balance with their new family commitments.  They didn't want to leave their careers and qualifications they'd worked so hard for.  But they also didn't want to miss out on the precious firsts with their babies.

So they decided to put a business case to their employer to job share.  They got it approved and it was a win/win/win.  It gave them the work life balance that they had hoped for and the business benefited from retaining their top talent.  As a result Hannah and Rachel felt a duty to shout about the benefits to help others.   So they created their Instagram page, The Job Share Pair.

The Job Share Pair is an amazing resource of experience, best practice, useful practical tips and to educate and inspire others about the power of job sharing.  This passion project has now turned into their innovative and successful coaching and consulting business.

And Hannah and Rachel are joining us today to talk all things job share and I can't wait to dive into this conversation.

In this episode The Job Share Pair share

  • What job-sharing is
  • Why it should be normalised and how we can do that
  • The benefits of job sharing for the us as mothers but also our employers
  • The practicalities of job-sharing
  • Tips on how you can propose job sharing to your employer

And today's guests are ALL about that.

I'm joined in this episode by Michele Deeks and Martin Galpin who are both Chartered Psychologist specialising in the application of positive psychology to improve workplace wellbeing and engagement.

They're co-founders of At My Best - helping individuals, teams and organisations be more aware of their strengths so they can be at their best more of the time.

Be Visible With An Authentic Personal Brand27 May 202100:47:34

Everybody has a personal brand – whoever you are, whatever you do, you make an impact on those you around you……whether you know it or not.

Jeff Bezos famously once said "Your personal brand is what people say about you when you're not in the room"  Do you know what people say about you when you're not in the room?

Today's episode I'm going to be exploring how you consciously focus on your personal brand.  But for many of us, creating a personal brand can feel like a daunting and mythical task - like searching for unicorn dust.  That's why I'm so excited to be joined by Personal Brand expert Deborah Ogden.

Deborah help individuals be visible, building profile, impact, & presence with a stand out Personal Brand.

We're going to be diving into making sure you get noticed, heard and remembered - for the right reasons!  Because the research shows that when we build a positive personal brand it has so many benefits personally and professionally.

Deborah also understands the impact to our personal brand when we become a mother and how to navigate that as a working mum. Deborah is a Lancashire Lass at heart, living in her adopted county of Yorkshire with her sports journalist husband and her son Oscar.

As Shama Hyder from Forbes said "The question is no longer IF you have a personal brand, but if you choose to guide and cultivate the brand or to let it be defined on your behalf."

Let's not leave this to chance ladies - let's take control of our personal brand to have the impact we want in this world.

How To Stop Overfunctioning12 May 202100:17:00

If you're a high-achiever and pride yourself on doing well in life, there's a risk you're also an overfunctioner.

An overfunctioner is someone who looks like they have it all together.  They're organised, reliable, helpful and viewed as a great partner, colleague or friend.  From the outside all these things are perceived to be great.  But for an overfunctioner on the inside it leads to frustration, exhaustion and even burnout.

You'll recognise if you overfunction if:

  • something needs to get done at work and you just do it, whether it's your job or not
  • someone in your life is struggling with something and you feel responsible to help them, even if they don't ask for your help
  • you have a secret (or not so secret) belief that if something needs doing, it won't get done unless you do it, even if the other person is capable
  • you feel overly concerned for everyone's happiness

In this episode I explore:

  • What is overfunctioning
  • How it might show up in your life
  • How you can move from overfunctioning to optimal-functioning

What Got You Here Won't Get You There09 Apr 202100:25:08

There's a concept known as the paradox of success. Where we believe that the things that have contributed to our success in life so far will be a good predictor of our future success.  But in actual fact they can be the things that hold you back as you transition into a new phase in your life.

In this episode I explore the concept of 'What Got You Here, Won't Get You There.'  That the beliefs and attitudes that have supported you to achieve success in your life prior to motherhood may not be the ones that enable you to thrive once you have children.

Five Simple Steps to Double Your Energy As A Working Mum02 Mar 202101:00:57

Do you struggle to get out of bed in the morning?  Do you feel more tired often than not these days?

Or ever find yourself getting frustrated with your body because it's not as strong or resilient as it used to be?

You're not alone, over three quarters of women say they are tired all the time

That was my experience when I became a first time mum 8 years ago. I became really frustrated with my body - berating it for not giving me the energy I needed when I needed it most.  I was actually in adrenal fatigue at the time but didn't know it, and I didn't understand how I'd got there or what to do to recover my energy.

What that experience taught me was that energy was in fact the most important thing in life.  Because without it we can't love those that matter most or live our life in the way that we want to.  I've come to believe that energy is our most precious resource.

So that's why I'm excited to be talking to today's guest - Alice Godfrey.  Alice is a registered nutritionist and thyroid expert. She helps women get to the bottom of their brain fog, weight gain, low mood and lack of energy.  In this episode Alice shares five simple steps to double your energy.  Which I think we all need in our life especially after the last 12 months!

In this episode Alice shares:

  • Her personal health journey that ignited her passion for the work she now does
  • What energy actually is and the building blocks needed for it in your body
  • Simple and easily accessible tips and strategies for building and maintaining your energy

Meal Planning Your Way to Wellbeing As a Working Mum13 Jan 202100:44:18

One of the challenges in my own life as a working mum is how to feed my family healthy food easily and in a stress free way. If I'm not careful it can become a source of stress - either feeling like I'm stuck in the kitchen constantly cooking and cleaning up and not spending time with my kids after a day at work.

Or I reach for the easy solution which often isn't healthy and then feel guilty for it. And I know i'm not alone in this - especially when so many of us are at home during this pandemic.

All too often we can get stuck in a meal rut and lose inspiration and motivation on how to do things differently.

So when my guest today reached out to share that she's cracked the code on how to meal plan to and feed your family healthy food as a busy working mum I knew I had to speak to her.

Nicole from Naturally Nic is a dietician with nearly 30 years experience. She's a mum of four children and knows from personal experience the stress of that question "What's for dinner tonight?" - she's here to help us save time and energy in the kitchen. But more than that she's got a powerful story to share on her own health journey that all women need to hear.

In this episode Nicole shares:

  • How homeschooling her four children led her to develop her meal planning approach
  • How this approach saves time, stress, energy and money
  • How to make simple and quick changes to your current meals to make them healthier
  • Quick tips to make meal planning easy as a working mum

Honestly these insights are a game changer if you find yourself stuck in a food rut feeding your family.

Supporting Our Children's Emotional Wellbeing During COVID-1915 Oct 202000:49:04

As mums there's probably not a week goes by that we don't worry about the wellbeing of our children in some way, shape or form.

But 2020 has been the year that worrying about our children's wellbeing has reached a whole new level:

  • How will they cope in lockdown?
  • Are they getting too much screen time?
  • Are they becoming isolated?
  • What if they get the virus?
  • How will they cope with the transition back to school?
  • Are the social distancing rules worrying them?
I don't know about you but at times I've felt like I've needed more support and resources to navigate some of these worries.

That's why I'm so excited to introduce you to my guest - Dr Sarah Taylor.  Sarah is a Clinical Psychologist specialising in supporting children. She has spent several years extensively researching the combined roles that science, psychology, and physical reflexes have on mental health.  This was borne of a desire to identify the causes behind a well-publicised fact that an increasing number of children today experience anxiety, depression and difficulty attending, co-operating and controlling their own behaviour at school and in the home.

Sarah recognised that there is a need for a solution that is more sensitively attuned to a child's psychological needs.   Interestingly Sarah concluded that a large proportion of individuals will not noticeably benefit from talking therapies. Due to the stresses and pressure of modern life, most children do not have fundamental behavioural problems; rather these are often symptoms of the reality that children need to emotionally regulate but do not know how.

Sarah created a unique approach and assessment programme to meet this challenge called Calm Brain that provides  an easily accessible psychological intervention that can be used by, and benefits everyone that uses it.

I know you're going to love what Sarah has to share, so this is a must listen for us mums.

When Success Feels Empty: The Hidden Burnout No One Talks About15 Apr 202500:23:35

You've heard of burnout - but have you heard of misalignment burnout? In this powerful and personal episode, I'm lifting the lid on a hidden form of burnout that affects so many high-achieving working mums. It's not about doing too much - it's about doing things that don't align with who you truly are.

I share my own story of burnout that started long before motherhood, when I was ticking all the boxes of "success" in corporate leadership but felt completely disconnected inside. We'll explore the science, psychology, and soul behind misalignment burnout - and most importantly, how to spot it and realign with your true values and purpose.

If you've ever wondered why success doesn't feel as good as it should… this episode is for you.

The Power of Knowing Your Needs as a Working Mum02 Sep 202000:29:14

As working mums if we want to thrive it's vital that we know what our needs are and take intentional action to get them met.

Sounds simple doesn't it?

But like finding the seam on the sellotape when you haven't used it in a while.  Or finding a matching pair of socks in the laundry.  Or folding a fitted sheet.  Knowing and meeting our needs as mothers can be deceivingly difficult.

Our wellbeing is closely tied to having our needs met, so unless we can understand our needs, we'll struggle to truly thrive.

In this episode I share:

  • What needs are and the four different types
  • Why they're so important
  • Why as mothers it can be so difficult to meet our needs
  • Four steps to identifying your needs and getting them met
