#15: Meet with Dr. Martine Van Zijll Langhout
Saison 1 · Épisode 18
dimanche 22 janvier 2023 • Durée 35:48
My guest for this episode is Dr. Martine Van Zijll Langhout. It was a real pleasure to have
this chat! Her passion for wildlife is tangible.
Her passion for wildlife conservation and medicine took Martine to many wild places in the world, where she worked with a wide range of wildlife species. Currently she's head of the veterinary department in Amsterdam Zoo and next to her work, she wrote a book about her life in the wilderness and what we human can learn from wildlife (Over Leven in het Wild). The enthusiastic reactions from readers inspired her to get a degree in life coaching and since then she's helping people to stay close to their heart and follow their dreams, which she's thoroughly enjoying.
In this episode, we discussed about the importance of living the present moment, the fact that it is not easy to find your own way :"it does not come easy, things are difficult, embrace when it is difficult, you have a high chance when you persevere" and her "go with the flow" way of thinking. I loved her mindset: " see where life takes you instead of trying to really be rigid about the way you want it". Her advices are invaluable for everyone, from young scientists to be to older veterinarian specialist as myself!
We also chat about the role of zoological institutions and conservation of wild species. We as humans, also have to realize that "the world is not made around us", we are part of it and it is a good reminder about humility and deep appreciation.
Without further due, it is my great pleasure to welcome my guest Martine.
Hope you enjoy the travel.

#7: When art meets conservation
Saison 1 · Épisode 7
jeudi 7 octobre 2021 • Durée 25:17
Welcome to Wildlife Conservation Insights, This is episode 7.
Today my guest is an artist! I am very happy about it and I hope there will be more episodes to come chatting with artists! I am very deeply convinced that science and art
have a lot in common.
So my guest today is Geraldine Simmons. She is a member of Artists for Conservation and works from her home studio located on Sydney’s northern beaches, Australia.
During her travels in 2005 with Friends of the National Parks Foundation in the deep jungles of Borneo, she was captivated by orang-utans and Indonesian wildlife. This
was the catalyst for her mission to raise funds and awareness for endangered wildlife.
Geraldine has exhibited both nationally and internationally accepting many invitations to
donate her works to significant animal conservation groups and campaigns. You can know more about Geri’s work on artistsforconservation.org and geraldineswildlifeart.com

Welcome back to Wildlife Conservation Insights Podcast. This is Episode 5.
We had a little break during this summer time!
Today is a very special episode: my guest is Dr. Terry Norton. Terry is one of my mentors and he has been my inspiration for many years. He is the reason I did a residency in zoological and aquatic medicine; making me understand that everything is possible if you work hard and are passionate.
Dr. Norton is a wildlife veterinarian. He became a Diplomate of the American College of Zoological Medicine in 1992. Since then, he has provided veterinary care for White Oak Conservation Center, Riverbanks Zoo, North Carolina State Zoo and the Wildlife Conservation Society’s St. Catherines Island Wildlife Survival Center. He founded the Georgia Sea Turtle Center based on Jekyll Island in Georgia. Not only he provides veterinary care for animals of his center but he also provides veterinary care for the Turtle Survival Alliance’s Turtle Survival Center, and St. Catherines Island Foundation programs.
Dr. Norton has worked around the world on numerous projects including Bali mynah
reintroduction in Indonesia, lemur health assessments in Madagascar, and sea turtle wildlife conservation efforts in Costa Rica.
In this episode we will talk about The Georgia Sea Turtle Center based in Jeykyll Island (GA). We will discuss this importance of believing in your projects and dreams, of (re)connecting with nature and of course of following your hearts and hard work.

#4: Talking about One health
Saison 1 · Épisode 4
dimanche 25 juillet 2021 • Durée 33:27
Welcome to Wildlife Conservation Insights Podcast. This is Episode 4.
Today I chatted with Dr. Sharon Deem. Dr. Deem is a wildlife veterinarian and epidemiologist. She is board certified from the American College of Zoological Medicine with a professional focus on diseases shared between domestic animals, wildlife, and people, and the impact of environmental change and human interactions on the health of wildlife populations. Sharon has conducted conservation medicine projects in 30 countries around the world including health-monitoring program for gorillas in central Africa, health assessments of sea turtles in Africa and the Americas, health and ecological studies of maned wolves in Bolivia, health care of working elephants in Asia, and avian and giant tortoise studies in the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador. Sharon is currently the director of the Saint Louis Zoo Institute for Conservation Medicine.
In this episode we will talk about One Health that is “ a rolling movement, an initiative where many different disciplines come together to optimize the health of human and non-human animals, plants and the environment that sustained us.” People start to realize that “We are all connected: our health is dependent on animal health.” The great thing about One Health is that it is “all about finding solutions.”
Dr. Deem will walk us through some projects she worked or is working on to illustrate the power of One Health.
“Deciding to preserve our planet is everyone’s matter: Yes! One person does matter”
It is the time to “use your voice and amplify it”, this is our opportunity to listen, understand and take action, “be part of the solution”.
Hope you enjoy the travel.

#3: Cetacean stranding: importance of passing on information to the public
Saison 1 · Épisode 3
vendredi 2 juillet 2021 • Durée 38:09
Welcome to Wildlife Conservation Insights Podcast. This is Episode 3.
Today I chatted with Megan Stolen a research scientist at Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute in Florida. Megan is an expert in marine mammal biology and stranding investigation. She also studies North American river otters which includes citizen science approach, as part of One Health. She works at the interface of ecology, conservation medicine and forensics.
She explains how she got involved in the marine mammal field. She told us why during cetacean stranding, it is important to pass on information to the general public and how everybody can create change in the world. "Without explaining science to the world, science does not really do anything as far as Conservation goes".
Hope you enjoy the travel.

#2: Human, pinnipeds and sharks: how do we co-exist?
Saison 1 · Épisode 2
jeudi 24 juin 2021 • Durée 33:40
Welcome to Wildlife Conservation Insights Podcast. This is Episode 2.
Today I chatted with Dr. Andrea Bogomolni, a researcher, artist and naturalist. Her research is directed towards understanding and interpreting interdisciplinary aspects of Ocean Health, and has largely focused on pathogen transmission in marine animals and the marine environment within the framework of One Health. She co-founded and currently chair the Northwest Atlantic Seal Research Consortium.
Listening to Andrea always gives me a great energy for the day! She brings hope and has a communicative positive attitude. She strongly believes in what she does. For her it is crucially important to find a way for people, sharks and pinnipeds to “live together and coexist together”. It is time to solve problem together, to improve our way of understanding the ecosystem to protect it better. “We are all connected and connected to the Ocean”. Remember “one person can do a lot and you are not alone, there is a big community out there that want to help.”
Hope you enjoy the travel.
