We yoga teachers are a bossy bunch: 'put your foot here", 'feet parallel', 'square your hips', we use phrases like 'simple poses' and 'advanced poses'.

Let me show you why this is all because we don't know enough. We don't know enough about deep human difference. By showing you how we are all so very different deep down in our bones, you can instantly see how all the cues you've learned as a teacher are at best on shaky ground.

At worst, they injure your students. This info should change the way you think forever as a yoga practitioner and teacher. It did when I found out! Come join me.

in this second of a series of mini podcast lectures on the theory of yin yoga (see episode 48 for part 1), I talk about the biochemistry (and qi theory of) why we must exercise our joints.

this is highly relevant in a culture where everyone has bad backs, bad knees and bad hips... even professional sports people.

how do we still not know how to work with our bones? what can we do to fix ourselves?

Overwhelmingly, I talk about the physical aspect of yoga as this is where most people start.
This week, we talk about the psychological level.

Now, this is not an actually getting naked meditation.
It is a getting naked psychologically mediation.
A getting rid of the loads we carry emotionally meditation.

Most yogis (and yoga teachers) think we cannot do yoga poses because of tension in our bodies.

You've heard this, your hamstrings are tight, lengthen here... or your shoulders are not open, you need to be more open...

But, what if there was a MUCH more obvious reason why some can't do a yoga pose, but another can? What if this reason is not known by most yoga teachers (even the most famous ones).

I used to practice yoga with rules of alignment. In fact, this approach is the dominant way to practice postural yoga today; there is a safe and an unsafe way to to do yoga poses, there is a right and a wrong way. There are cues that yoga teachers give students on how to do poses well and there are assists that teachers can give to students to help them.

But what if the assumptions of alignment yoga are all wrong? I found out they are: come join me.

acupressure and myofascial release are getting more and more popular in yin yoga and yoga in general. as it becomes more popular, weird and just plain wrong claims are being made on social media about what massaging or placing massage balls on these places will do.

in this short episode, i talk about claims like these are erroneous, even dangerous because they leads yoga teachers to make spurious claims about the power of acupressure.

massaging these places is actually really great, but not for the reasons claimed.

i continue to be shocked by how bossy yoga teachers are.

i continue to be appalled by how inconfident many yoga students are with exploring yoga poses (placing THEIR OWN hands and feet WHERE THEY WOULD LIKE to put them) and disobeying cues by yoga teachers.

in this episode i list a few very obvious examples of movement outside of yoga that break the alignment cues we hold so dear and that many yoga teachers enforce.

if others break our rules. why can't we?

teachers need to stop telling people they are doing poses right & wrong.

33. stay (in meditation).09 mars 202400:12:37

coming again from my teacher training bedroom in milan! talking more about meditation, the core of the yoga practice. yoga is not about getting fit. really yoga (and medtiation) about staying...

even when your mind doesn't want to stay with what you are experiencing and going through in life. this is the opposite of what we tend to do.

we tend to either avoid what we are thinking and feeling... or we compartmentalise and ignore. this is bad for your mental health.

medtiation is about staying and watching what goes on inside you... and then you begin to see what thoughts really are....

32. watch your language! a yoga teacher's guide06 mars 202400:28:59

language! consider these common yoga teacher terms:

"modification" - something one does if a student can't do the full pose

"variation" - a variation on the standard - normally for more advanced students.

this language is a problem.

because it makes it seem that there is a 'standard' pose we all should work to... and we could all get there if we work enough.

those who can do the standard teach everyone else (cos they can) and invite those who can to push it even further with 'variations' (for advanced people).

this leaves the vast majority who cannot do the 'standard' and have to 'modify' (and get given all those cues to 'improve'). and how does that feel?

exactly.

i want to you to consider that this is not being politically correct, spiritually liberal or inclusive. this language is bad because it is bad anatomy... come join me :-D
