| Cedros reunites to talk about the release of their album ”The Red Knight” | 03 Nov 2021 | 00:58:11 | |
This is a unique episode as it's a bit of a reunion of the band Cedros that I was a part of about 10 years ago. On Friday, November 5th, Where The Living Room Used To Be is releasing the album we made back in 2011 - entitled The Red Knight - that never actually came out on limited-edition lathe-cut vinyl 7", cassette with exclusive bonus tracks, and digital download. Caleb, Phil, and I got together to talk about our experiences in the band, working with Daryl Rabidoux to make this album, and some of the memorable shows we played during our time as a band. Joe Bruce shares some advice about how to shift your perspective to unburden yourself as an artist... as well as what it takes to connect that missing link to move to the next level. For quite a few years now Chachi Carvalho has been curating an art & music festival called Culture Shock. Joe has performed at this event a couple of times including last year which pivoted to an online stream. The show was really cool so I wanted to share his performance of "Wish" with you and invite you to check out the entire program. Also, follow Culture Shock 401 on Instagram as there might be some exciting news coming soon. | Sound Advice with Alex MacLeod | 23 Sep 2021 | 00:15:14
Alex MacLeod passes along some of the wisest advice I've heard about how to connect with an audience and truly be a pro musician. He also gives some tips on how to learn and advance your bluegrass talents. Also, as you heard in the full episode, Alex had the opportunity to play in one of the most well-known New England bluegrass bands of all time, Northern Lights. And to me... it's just such a wonderful thing that he got to be a part of representing Rhode Island in that way. After being a band for 35 years Northern Lights played their last show on March 13th, 2010. At the end of this mini-episode I've included a song from that evening - "Lonesome Road" (audio credit: steveide59) that featured Alex on rhythm guitar and vocals. Mark Taber shares some very practical advice on how to be a better musician and a better bandmate, as well as what he feels the overall approach should be toward creating art and music And, as Mark talked about in the full episode, Tombstone was known for their powerful live shows - playing anywhere from small bars to big arenas - which helped lead them to major label record deals. | Paul Dube Sr. (tribute to this master accordionist) | 12 Aug 2021 | 00:13:52
I've been very fortunate to speak with so many talented musicians over the last few years. One of these people was my father-in-law, Paul Dube, back in February of 2020. As you hopefully heard in that episode, Paul is an accomplished musician, booker, and music educator, but one thing you didn't hear was how his father Paul Dube Sr. was a master accordion player and educator as well. Paul Dube Sr. passed away on July 4th of this year after a hard-fought battle with cancer. So what I have for you on this mini-episode is a previously unreleased clip of Paul Dube Jr. talking about the skill his father had, and what it was like balancing a third-shift job in a mill and being a working musician in the 60s to support the family. I hope you enjoy the episode and please listen to the end to hear some recordings of Paul Sr. playing "Waltz Allegro" followed by the song "Sunny Skies"

John Difruscio tells us about how great a certain record & tape store used to be, some of the cool things they do at the bar at Askew, where he hangs out when he's not at the clubs he owns, and reflects back on some of the more memorable shows he's booked throughout his career. Also included at the end are a couple of live songs from one of my personal favorite bands, Verse, recorded at their 5th Anniversary show at Club Hell back in 2008!! (audio credit: cocolash)

| RI 5 with Duke Robillard | 26 Feb 2021 | 00:22:18 | |
Duke Robillard takes us through a bit of the history of Providence's record stores, plus a tip of the hat to the drinks of RI and his experience at The Guild, where he gets his pizza these days, and more about the overall love he has for his home state! I do have to say that in my opinion this was probably Duke's favorite part of the interview. I'm so happy we got to reminisce about some of this stuff and I hope you enjoy! Also included is a song from Duke's 2019 album Ear Worms. It's a cover of the Bob Dylan song "I Am A Lonesome Hobo" that features fellow Rhode Island Music Hall Of Famer, Mark Culter. If you dig it, Ear Worms is available on both CD and blue vinyl on Duke's website! // Interview recorded January 30th, 2021 via phone call over Zoom // Intro music by Cedros // Hosted by James Toomey // /// If you enjoy the episode please leave a rating or review wherever you're listening right now! ///
| Sound Advice with Duke Robillard | 19 Feb 2021 | 00:23:42 | |
On this bonus episode, Duke Robillard talks about the value of a good music education, what you need as the core motivation to be a person in the arts, and a possible reason why playing guitar came to him so easily that's quite interesting! Also, as you heard in Episode #29, Duke shared that the first release Roomful Of Blues ever did was a song of his called "Don't You Want To Roll With Me". They put this out as a 7" on their own label Room-Tone Records. It sold quite well and helped to further put the band on the map, so I wanted to share the song for you at the end of the episode. Enjoy

Gail Greenwood and I chat about being intimidated by rockstars when buying records, how great a certain pizza establish is... especially when they catered Belly's listening party for Dove at POP a few years back, her place to connect with nature, and it's possible I may have helped name her new dog!!! | Sound Advice with Gail Greenwood | 17 Dec 2020 | 00:14:31
Gail Greenwood passes along a bass playing technique that she learned from record producer, Glyn Johns, that he originally learned from Bill Wyman of The Rolling Stones... which I have to say is pretty cool and she also shares an often overlooked way to interact with the world. Since Belly has done quite a few television performances over the years on shows such as The Late Show with David Letterman, Late Night with Conon O'Brien and The Jon Stewart Show... I wanted to include a song from one of these performances to share this part of their career. At end of this bonus episode is Belly's song "Red" recorded in June of 1995 on The Jon Stewart Show (video credit: What's for afters?) for you all to enjoy!
